Abstract:Plasmonic nanostructures possessing unique and versatile optoelectronic properties have been vastly investigated over the past decade. However, the full potential of plasmonic nanostructure has not yet been fully exploited, particularly with single-component homogeneous structures with monotonic properties, and the addition of new components for making multicomponent nanoparticles may lead to new-yet-unexpected or improved properties. Here we define the term "multi-component nanoparticles" as hybrid structures composed of two or more condensed nanoscale domains with distinctive material compositions, shapes, or sizes. We reviewed and discussed the designing principles and synthetic strategies to efficiently combine multiple components to form hybrid nanoparticles with a new or improved plasmonic functionality. In particular, it has been quite challenging to precisely synthesize widely diverse multicomponent plasmonic structures, limiting realization of the full potential of plasmonic heterostructures. To address this challenge, several synthetic approaches have been reported to form a variety of different multicomponent plasmonic nanoparticles, mainly based on heterogeneous nucleation, atomic replacements, adsorption on supports, and biomolecule-mediated assemblies. In addition, the unique and synergistic features of multicomponent plasmonic nanoparticles, such as combination of pristine material properties, finely tuned plasmon resonance and coupling, enhanced light-matter interactions, geometry-induced polarization, and plasmon-induced energy and charge transfer across the heterointerface, were reported. In this review, we comprehensively summarize the latest advances on state-of-art synthetic strategies, unique properties, and promising applications of multicomponent plasmonic nanoparticles. These plasmonic nanoparticles including heterostructured nanoparticles and composite nanostructures are prepared by direct synthesis and physical force- or biomolecule-mediated assembly, which hold tremendous potential for plasmon-mediated energy transfer, magnetic plasmonics, metamolecules, and nanobiotechnology.

Abstract:Chiral hybrid nanomaterials with multiple components provide a highly promising approach for the integration of desired chirality with other functionalities into one single nanoscale entity. However, precise control over multicomponent chiral plasmonic hybrid nanomaterials to enable their application in diverse and complex scenarios remains a significant challenge. In this review, our focus lies on the recent advances in the preparation and application of multicomponent chiral plasmonic hybrid nanomaterials, with an emphasis on synthetic strategies and emerging applications. We first systematically elucidate preparation methods for multicomponent chiral plasmonic hybrid nanomaterials encompassing the following approaches: physical deposition approach, galvanic replacement reaction, chiral molecule-mediated, chiral heterostructure, circularly polarized light-mediated, magnetically induced, and chiral assembly. Furthermore, we highlight emerging applications of multicomponent chiral plasmonic hybrid nanomaterials in chirality sensing, enantioselective catalysis, and biomedicine. Finally, we provide an outlook on the challenges and opportunities in the field of multicomponent chiral plasmonic hybrid nanomaterials. In-depth investigations of these multicomponent chiral hybrid nanomaterials will pave the way for the rational design of chiral hybrid nanostructures with desirable functionalities for emerging technological applications.

Abstract:Advances in the field of plasmonics, i.e., nano-photonics exploiting the optical properties of metal nanostructures, paved the way for the development of ultrasensitive devices, including biological and various other sensors whose operation is based on the nanoscale localization of the electromagnetic field. However, the high dissipation loss of metal nanostructures limits their use in many current applications, including metasurfaces, metamaterials, and nanowaveguides, thus requiring the development of new devices that combine metal nanostructures with highly refractive dielectric nanoparticles. The resulting metal–dielectric (hybrid) nanostructures have demonstrated many interesting properties from the practical application standpoint (moderate dissipation loss, resonant magnetooptical response, strong nonlinear optical properties, etc.), thus placing this field at the vanguard of the modern science of light. We review the current state of theoretical and experimental research into hybrid metal–dielectric nanoantennas and their derivative nanostructures capable of selectively scattering light waves, directionally amplifying and transmitting optical signals, controlling the propagation of such signals, and generating optical harmonics.

Abstract:Nanoplasmonics deals with the collective oscillation of electrons at the surface of metallic structures at the nanometer scale. It possesses advantages including nanofocusing of electromagnetic waves beyond the optical diffraction limit to enhance local electric field intensity and femtosecond-level relaxation times. With the advances in the fundamental understanding of nanoplasmonics in the past two decades as well as the development of nanofabrication technology, nanoplasmonics has found significant practical applications in life sciences, optical manipulations, and high-speed telecommunications. Many structures for nanoplasmonic optical antennas are demonstrated with a focus on improving electric field intensity and extending working wavelength range. The integration of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) with nanoplasmonics enables dynamically tunable nanoplasmonic metasurfaces. Meanwhile, the introduction of nanoplasmonic metasurfaces into MEMS systems enhances the performance of MEMS photothermal devices, absorbers, emitters, and equips MEMS photonic device with selectivity. The accurate excitation of, and nanofocusing in nanoplasmonics structures are realized by using photonic waveguide input, while photonic waveguides equipped with nanoplasmonic features present higher modulation speed and perform photodetection/sensing functions in a much smaller footprint. Future developments will mainly involve further enhancements in concentrating the electric field, miniaturization of the well-defined nanoplasmonic structures, and realizing the full integration of nanoplasmonics, MEMS, photonic waveguides, and the advanced electronic system using the standard CMOS fabrication technology toward compact micro/nano-systems. With these developments, handheld portable sensors, compact tunable optical manipulation devices, ultra-high-speed chip-scale modulators with high production volume and low-cost are envisaged for healthcare, Internet-of-Things, and data center applications.

Fundamental properties for both surface plasmon polaritons (SPP) and localized surface plasmons (LSP) arise a new insight and understanding for the electro-optical device investigations, such as plasmonic nanofocusing, low-loss plasmon waveguide and active plasmonic detectors for energy harvesting. Here, we review some typical functional plasmonic nanostructures and nanosmart devices emerging from our individual and collaborative research works.

Abstract:Plasmonic manipulation of light in metal/semiconductor heterostructures is a powerful tool that exploits extraordinary optical properties of metallic nanostructures to concentrate and control light at the nanometer scale. Here, recent progresses in the mechanism and strategies developed for the control of plasmon-induced optical field distribution, hot electron injection and energy transfer at the metal/semiconductor heterostructure interface are discussed. This is of crucial importance to the selection of matched materials, the design of optimized device architectures and the future development of efficient fabrication technologies for plasmon-enhanced photocatalytic and photovoltaic applications.

Abstract:Recently hybrid plasmonic waveguides have been becoming very attractive as a promising candidate to realize next-generation ultra-dense photonic integrated circuits because of the ability to achieve nano-scale confinement of light and relatively long propagation distance. Furthermore, hybrid plasmonic waveguides also offer a platform to merge photonics and electronics so that one can realize ultra-small optoelectronic integrated circuits (OEICs) for high-speed signal generation, processing as well as detection. In this paper, we gave a review for the progresses on various hybrid plasmonic waveguides as well as ultrasmall functionality devices developed recently.

Abstract:Nanoparticle arrays containing metallic and dielectric nanoparticles at defined locations provide unique opportunities for controlling light field distributions in both spatial and frequency domain as well as for engineering intricate phase landscapes. We will introduce in this paper novel template guided self-assembly approaches that facilitate the integration of electromagnetically strongly coupled metallic nanoparticles and dielectric (or semiconductor) nanoparticles at separate, pre-defined locations. The assembly approach facilitates the creation of sub-5 nm gaps between plasmonic nanoparticles and, at the same time, allows the realization of tens to hundreds of nanometer separations between metallic and dielectric components. The electromagnetic working principles of the resulting optoplasmonic hetero-nanoparticle arrays and potential application fields of these multiscaled electromagnetic materials will be discussed.

Abstract:In this article, we reviewed new designs for plasmonic nanostructure and its nanofocusing, coupling, resonance, and waveguide characterizations. With in-plane Fresnel zone plates, a 15 times field enhancement was achieved for the plasmonic nanofocusing. Plasmonic antennas placed at both ends of a single nanowire, consisting of a nanooptical circuit, was successfully realized in an enhanced plasmon coupling and emission. Plasmonic Fano resonance was also observed in a single sliced Ag nanodisk with the structure symmetry breaking. A hybrid plasmonic waveguide with a CdS nanoribbon placed on Ag surface showed an excellent mode confinement and energy low dissipation. More potential applications based on these plasmonic configurations are also discussed in this article.

Abstract:Plasmonic and photonic elements often have complementary optical properties, motivating the development of ‘optoplasmonic’ hybrid systems in which the photonic and plasmonic elements can synergistically interact. The overall goal in the design of optoplasmonic structures is to overcome the limitations of the individual building blocks or to generate entirely new properties that reach beyond what is possible with conventional photonic or plasmonic structures. After providing a brief introduction into the relevant optical properties of plasmonic and photonic building blocks, this manuscript reviews optoplasmonic architectures that contain plasmonic nanoantennas embedded in a defined photonic environment generated by discrete dielectric nanoparticles (NPs), microcavities, waveguides, or photonic crystals, as well as all-metal NP or metal/dielectric NP hybrid arrays in which diffracted modes interact with the plasmons of metal NPs. The fundamental working principles of these optoplasmonic systems are analyzed and selected applications and fabrication strategies are discussed.

Abstract:Plasmonics, focusing on the fundamental researches and novel applications of plasmons, has rapidly developed as an important branch of nano-optics in recent years. Essentially, surface plasmons are highly localized collective electron excitation at a metal-dielectric interface. This elementary excitation can be strongly coupled with electromagnetic fields, which enable one to collect, manipulate, and emit micron-scale optical signals through using nano-scale structures. Recently, the quantum properties of plasmons have received tremendous attention as nanofabrication techniques approach to the quantum limit. On this scale, with the unique intrinsic properties of plasmons, i.e. the particle-like nature of photons and wave-like nature of electrons, quantum plasmonics exhibits very attractive prospects in quantum information, high-efficiency optoelectronic devices, and highly sensitive detection, etc. Here in this paper, we review the development of quantum plasmonics in recent years, by introducing the research progress of relevant theories and the experimental breakthroughes. Some perspectives of the future development of quantum plasmonics are also outlined.

Abstract:With unique ability to concentrate and manipulate light at nanoscale, surface plasmon resonance technologies create additional opportunities for fabricating superintegration photodetectors with desirable functionalities. To gain an insight into the state‐of‐the‐art of plasmonic photodetectors, recent advances in novel devices as well as potential building blocks are presented herein. The article focuses particularly on understanding the enhancement mechanism of different architectures such as nanoparticles, gratings, waveguides, antennas, and microcavities. Meanwhile, challenges and potential design schemes are proposed in this inspiring field.

Abstract:Noble metal nanostructures possess novel optical properties because of their collective electronic oscillations, known as surface plasmons (SPs). The resonance of SPs strongly depends on the material, surrounding environment, as well as the geometry of the nanostructures. Complex metal nanostructures have attracted research interest because of the degree of freedom in tailoring the plasmonic properties for more advanced applications that are unattainable by simple ones. In this review, we discuss the plasmonic properties of several typical types of complex metal nanostructures, that is, electromagnetically coupled nanoparticles (NPs), NPs/metal films, NPs/nanowires (NWs), NWs/NWs, and metal nanostructures supported or coated by dielectrics. The electromagnetic field enhancement and surface-enhanced Raman scattering applications are mainly discussed in the NPs systems where localized SPs have a key role. Propagating surface plasmon polaritons and relevant applications in plasmonic routers and logic gates using NWs network are also reviewed. The effect of dielectric substrates and surroundings of metal nanostructures to the plasmonic properties is also discussed.

Abstract:The field of plasmonics is capable of enabling interesting applications in the different wavelength ranges, spanning from the ultraviolet up to the infrared. The choice of plasmonic material and how the material is nanostructured have significant implications for ultimate performance of any plasmonic device. Artificially designed nanoporous metals have interesting material properties including large specific surface area, distinctive optical properties, high electrical conductivity, and reduced stiffness, implying their potentials for many applications. This manuscript reviews the wide range of available nanoporous metals, mainly focusing on their properties as plasmonic materials. While extensive reports on the use and characterization of NPMs exist, a detailed discussion on their connection with surface plasmons and enhanced spectroscopies as well as photocatalysis is missing. Here, we report on different metals investigated, from the most used nanoporous gold to mixed metal compounds, and discuss each of these plasmonic materials suitability for a range of structural design and applications. Finally, we discuss the potentials and limitations of the traditional and alternative plasmonic materials for applications in enhanced spectroscopy and photocatalysis.
