Abstract:An immersed hypersurface in the Euclidean space Rn+1 satisfying the equation H =-XN + λ is called a λ-hypersurface.In this paper,we investigate the second pinching problem for λ-hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space.Let M be an n-dimensional complete λ-hypersurface in Rn+1 with polynomial volume growth.Denote by A the second fundamental form of M.We verify that there exists a positive absolute constant γsuch that if |λ| ≤ γ,βλ ≤ |A|2 ≤βλ +1/21,whereβλ 1/2 (2 + λ2 + |λ|√λ2+ 4),then |A|2 =βλ,λ ≥ 0,and M is either the sphere Sn (√n),the cylinder Sk (√k) × Rn-k,1 ≤ k ≤ n-1,or the cylinder S(λ2+4-|λ|) Rn-1.

Abstract:In [EH89, Theorem 1] Ekeland-Hofer prove that for a centrally symmetric, restricted contact type hypersurface in R^{2n} and for any global, centrally symmetric Hamiltonian perturbation there exists a leaf-wise intersection point. In this note we show that if we replace restricted contact type by star-shaped there exists infinitely many leaf-wise intersection points or a leaf-wise intersection point on a closed characteristic.

Abstract:In this article we explain how critical points of a particular perturbation of the Rabinowitz action functional give rise to leaf-wise intersection points in hypersurfaces of restricted contact type. This is used to derive existence and multiplicity results for leaf-wise intersection points in hypersurfaces of restricted contact type in general exact symplectic manifolds. The notion of leaf-wise intersection points was introduced by Moser.

Abstract:We prove ``half-space" intersection properties in three settings: the hemisphere, half-geodesic balls in space forms, and certain subsets of Gaussian space. For instance, any two embedded minimal hypersurfaces in the sphere must intersect in every closed hemisphere. Two approaches are developed: one using classifications of stable minimal hypersurfaces, and the second using conformal change and comparison geometry for $\alpha$-Bakry-Émery-Ricci curvature. Our methods yield the analogous intersection properties for free boundary minimal hypersurfaces in space form balls, even when the interior or boundary curvature may be negative. Finally, Colding and Minicozzi recently showed that any two embedded shrinkers of dimension $n$ must intersect in a large enough Euclidean ball of radius $R(n)$. We show that $R(n) \leq 2 \sqrt{n}$.

Abstract:We investigate leaf-wise intersection points on hypersurfaces of contact type in monotone symplectic manifolds. We show that monotone Floer-essential Lagrangians detect periodic leaf-wise intersection points in hypersurfaces of contact type whose Reeb flow is Zoll. Examples include the prequantization bundles appearing in monotone toric negative line bundles. Generalizing, we prove the existence of leaf-wise intersection points for certain annulus subbundles in weak+-monotone negative line bundles, not necessarily toric. The proofs combine reduced symplectic cohomology with the original methods employed by Albers-Frauenfelder to prove global existence results of this kind.

Algebraic intersection for hyperbolic surfaces

Abstract:We show that the algebraic intersection form of hyperbolic surfaces of genus $g$ has a minimum in the moduli space and that the minimum grows in the order $(\log g)^{-2}$ in terms of the genus. We also describe the asymptotic behavior of the algebraic intersection form in the moduli space as the homologically systolic length goes to zero.

Abstract:A family of closed simple (i.e., Jordan) curves is $m$-intersecting if any pair of its curves have at most $m$ points of common intersection. We say that a pair of such curves touch if they intersect at a single point of common tangency. In this work we show that any $m$-intersecting family of $n$ Jordan curves in general position in the plane contains $O\left(n^{2-\frac{1}{3m+15}}\right)$ touching pairs Furthermore, we use the string separator theorem of Fox and Pach in order to establish the following Crossing Lemma for contact graphs of Jordan curves: Let $\Gamma$ be an $m$-intersecting family of closed Jordan curves in general position in the plane with exactly $T=\Omega(n)$ touching pairs of curves, then the curves of $\Gamma$ determine $\Omega\left(T\cdot\left(\frac{T}{n}\right)^{\frac{1}{9m+45}}\right)$ intersection points. This extends the similar bounds that were previously established by Salazar for the special case of pairwise intersecting (and $m$-intersecting) curves. Specializing to the case at hand, this substantially improves the bounds that were recently derived by Pach, Rubin and Tardos for arbitrary families of Jordan curves.

Abstract:We prove that, if a closed geodesic $\Gamma$ on a complete finite type hyperbolic surface has at least 2 self-intersections, then the length of $\Gamma$ has an lower bound $2\log(5+2\sqrt6)$, and the lower bound is sharp, attained on a corkscrew geodesic on a thrice punctured sphere.

Bounds for the number of moves between pants decompositions, and between triangulations

Abstract:Given two pants decompositions of a compact orientable surface $S$, we give an upper bound for their distance in the pants graph that depends logarithmically on their intersection number and polynomially on the Euler characteristic of $S$. As a consequence, we find an upper bound on the volume of the convex core of a maximal cusp (which is a hyperbolic structures on $S \times \mathbb{R}$ where given pants decompositions of the conformal boundary are pinched to annular cusps). As a further application, we give an upper bound for the Weil--Petersson distance between two points in the Teichmüller space of $S$ in terms of their corresponding short pants decompositions. Similarly, given two one-vertex triangulations of $S$, we give an upper bound for the number of flips and twist maps needed to convert one triangulation into the other. The proofs rely on using pre-triangulations, train tracks, and an algorithm of Agol, Hass, and Thurston.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to give an upper bound for the intrinsic diameter of a surface with boundary immersed in a conformally flat three dimensional Riemannian manifold in terms of the integral of the mean curvature and of the length of its boundary. Of particular interest is the application of the inequality to minimal surfaces in the three-sphere and in the hyperbolic space. Here the result implies an a priori estimate for connected solutions of Plateau's problem, as well as a necessary condition on the boundary data for the existence of such solutions. The proof follows a construction of Miura and uses a diameter bound for closed surfaces obtained by Topping and Wu–Zheng.

Abstract:We prove that on a punctured oriented surface with Euler characteristic chi < 0, the maximal cardinality of a set of essential simple arcs that are pairwise non-homotopic and intersecting at most once is 2|chi|(|chi|+1). This gives a cubic estimate in |chi| for a set of curves pairwise intersecting at most once on a closed surface. We also give polynomial estimates in |chi| for sets of arcs and curves pairwise intersecting a uniformly bounded number of times. Finally, we prove that on a punctured sphere the maximal cardinality of a set of arcs starting and ending at specified punctures and pairwise intersecting at most once is 1/2|chi|(|chi|+1).

Abstract:Abstract In this paper, we consider locally wedge-shaped manifolds, which are Riemannian manifolds that are allowed to have both boundary and certain types of edges. We define and study the properties of free boundary minimal hypersurfaces inside locally wedge-shaped manifolds. In particular, we show a compactness theorem for free boundary minimal hypersurfaces with curvature and area bounds in a locally wedge-shaped manifold. Additionally, using Schoen–Simon–Yau’s estimates, we also prove a Bernstein-type theorem indicating that, under certain conditions, a stable free boundary minimal hypersurface inside a Euclidean wedge must be a portion of a hyperplane. As our main application, we establish a curvature estimate for sufficiently regular free boundary minimal hypersurfaces in a locally wedge-shaped manifold with certain wedge angle assumptions. We expect this curvature estimate will be useful for establishing a min-max theory for the area functional in wedge-shaped spaces.

Abstract:We give improved estimates for the size of the singular set of minimizing capillary hypersurfaces: the singular set is always of codimension at least $4$, and this estimate improves if the capillary angle is close to $0$, $\frac{\pi}{2}$, or $\pi$. For capillary angles that are close to $0$ or $\pi$, our analysis is based on a rigorous connection between the capillary problem and the one-phase Bernoulli problem.

Abstract:We prove upper bounds for the Morse index and number of intersections of min-max geodesics achieving the $p$-widths of a closed surface. A key tool in our analysis is a proof that for a generic set of metrics, the tangent cone at any vertex of any finite union of closed immersed geodesics consists of exactly two lines. We also construct examples to demonstrate that multiplicity one does not hold generically in this setting. Specifically, we construct an open set of metrics on $S^2$ for which the $p$-width is only achieved by $p$ copies of a single geodesic.

Abstract:The minimal length of closed geodesics among all finite-type hyperbolic surfaces with self-intersection number $k$ is $2\cosh^{-1}(2k+1)$ for $k$ sufficiently large, i.e. $k>10^{13350}$ by <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2210.12966" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2210.12966">arXiv:2210.12966</a>. In the present paper we will give an another proof independent of it and improve the lower bound $k>10^{13350}$ to $k>1750$.

Abstract:Using the sunflower method, we show that if $\theta \in (0,1) \cap \mathbb{Q}$ and $\mathcal{F}$ is a $O(n^{1/3})$-bounded $\theta$-intersecting family over $[n]$, then $\lvert \mathcal{F} \rvert = O(n)$, and that if $\mathcal{F}$ is $o(n^{1/3})$-bounded, then $\lvert \mathcal{F} \rvert \leq (\frac{3}{2} + o(1))n$. This partially solves a conjecture raised in (Balachandran et al., Electron J. Combin. 26 (2019), #P2.40) that any $\theta$-intersecting family over $[n]$ has size at most linear in $n$, in the regime where we have no very large sets.

Abstract:We derive some estimates for stable minimal hypersurfaces in $R^{n+1}$. The estimates are related to recent proofs of Bernstein theorems for complete stable minimal hypersurfaces in $R^{n+1}$ for $3\le n\le 5$ by Chodosh-Li, Chodosh-Li-Minter-Stryker and Mazet. In particular, the estimates indicate that the methods in their proofs may not work for $n=6$, which is observed also by Antonelli-Xu and Mazet. The method of derivation in this work might also be applied to other problems.
