Abstract:Parental mental health has a significant impact on adolescent well-being, including their engagement in problematic behaviors such as risky internet use. However, limited research has examined the association between parental mental health and risky internet use (RIU) in adolescents, particularly those with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). To address this gap, this study investigated the relations between parental depression and anxiety symptoms and RIU in adolescents with ADHD. A sample of 100 participants (mean age = 13.6 years; 27% female) diagnosed with ADHD was included. Parental depression and anxiety symptoms were assessed using the Beck Depression and Beck Anxiety Inventories, while adolescents' RIU was measured using Young's Internet Addiction Scale. Participants with scores exceeding 50 on the scale were classified as having RIU. After controlling for adolescent gender, parental education levels, and income, the results revealed that both parental depressive (β = 0.09) and anxiety symptoms (β = 0.06) significantly predicted an elevated risk of RIU in adolescents with ADHD. These findings highlight the substantial role of parental depression and anxiety as risk factors for RIU in this population. Understanding these associations can inform the development of targeted interventions to mitigate the impact of parental mental health on adolescent RIU and promote better outcomes for individuals with ADHD.
Parent-Perceived Benefits and Harms Associated With Internet Use by Adolescent Offspring

Abstract:Importance: Limited systematic information on familial factors and perception of the benefits and harms of internet use by youths is available. Much of the current research has been hampered by small nondiverse samples and limited information on key familial and offspring characteristics. Objective: To characterize parental perceptions and concerns about internet use associated with adolescent development, well-being, safety, family connectedness, and potential for problematic internet use. Design, setting, and participants: A 20-minute, English-language survey was developed with expert stakeholders using previously validated questionnaires and was conducted online between June 17 and July 5, 2022. Participants included 1005 parents of children and adolescents aged 9 to 15 years drawn from an online digital survey platform and calibrated for representation with post hoc weightings. Main outcomes and measures: Parent survey responses about family characteristics and internet use were used to compute Internet Addiction Test scores for parents and their offspring, Alabama Parenting Questionnaire scores, and an aggregate family connectedness score. Results: The survey cohort of 1005 parents included 568 women (56.5%) and 437 men (43.5%) with a mean age (SD) of 39.5 (6.4) years. In terms of race and ethnicity, the most common categories included Black or African American (95 [9.5%]), Latinx or Hispanic (100 [10.0%]), White (602 [59.9%]), and 2 or more races or ethnicities (122 [12.1%]). Respondents endorsed parental concerns that included exposure to harmful content (646 [64.3%]) and online bullying (533 [53.0%]). Two hundred twenty-five parents (22.4%) had specific concerns about internet addiction in their adolescent offspring, and twice as many parents reported specific concerns about internet addiction than substance addiction. However, parents also indicated that internet use improved family connectedness among immediate families (468 [46.6%]) and extended families (568 [56.5%]). Internet Addiction Test scores in adolescent offspring were correlated with parent scores (β = 0.62 [SE = 0.02]; P < .001) and Alabama Parenting Questionnaire-Inconsistent Discipline scores (β = 0.23 [SE = 0.11]; P = .04). Conclusions and relevance: In this survey study of parent perceptions of internet use among adolescent offspring, parents believed the internet brought families closer yet also expressed concerns. Problematic internet use among youths was correlated with negative parenting styles and parent internet use. This research adds to the literature by suggesting that families, their communities, and industry may have common ground to collaborate on reducing the negative effects of internet use.

Abstract:Introduction: The literature highlighted that problematic internet use can have detrimental consequences on individuals' well-being. Social media addiction, escapism and coping skills are closely related to problematic internet use. However, no study has currently examined the relationship between problematic internet use and social media use, escapism and coping skills. Method: This multicenter cross-sectional designed study evaluated the relationships between problematic internet use and social media addiction, escapism, and coping skills in 508 adolescents (319 female) aged 14-18 years. In order to collect data, sociodemographic data form, Internet Addiction Scale, Social Media Addiction Scale, Escapism Scale and Kidcope Adolescent Version have been used. First, adolescents who scored ≥50 on the Internet Addiction Test were classified as the problematic internet use group; adolescents who scored <50 were classified as the control group. Then, the relationships between problematic internet use and social media addiction, escapism and coping skills were evaluated. Results: The results showed that problematic internet use was associated with duration of social media use, impairment in social media-related functionality, preferring virtual life, and virtual pleasure, escapism, avoidant and negative coping strategies. Conclusion: These findings may provide an empirical basis for problematic internet use prevention and intervention in adolescence.

Examining the relationship between digital parenting self-efficacy and digital parenting awareness of early adolescents' parents

Abstract:Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the variables that affect early adolescents' parents' digital self-efficacy and digital parenting awareness. Design and methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted between May and June 2022, with a sample of 2402 parents. Data were collected using a Parent Information Form, Digital Parenting Awareness Scale, and Digital Parenting Self-Efficacy Scale. The data were analysed using independent t-tests, Pearson correlations, and one-way ANOVA analysis. Results: All parents have internet access at home and on their phones, and they all use the internet. The average daily internet usage time is 4.48 ± 2.09 h. A positive correlation was found between the average scores of parents' digital literacy (r = -0.111; p < 0.001) and digital communication (r = 0.089; p < 0.001). It was determined that the average digital communication subscale score of parents with a primary school degree was higher than that of parents with a university degree or higher (F = 2.783, p = 0.040). It was found that there was no statistical correlation between the amount of time parents spend on the internet daily and their total score and subscale scores of digital self-efficacy (p > 0.05). Conclusion: This study's results demonstrate that parents are proficient in digital security, digital literacy, and digital communication. Additionally, there is a significant correlation between digital literacy, digital communication, and digital parenting awareness. Practice implications: The study results could guide the development of future interventions to enhance parents' awareness and competence in digital safety and the use of digital tools.
Association Between Problematic Internet Use, Quality of Parent-Adolescents Relationship, Conflicts, and Mental Health Problems

Abstract:Increasingly widespread use of Internet resources has facilitated the emergence of problematic Internet use (PIU) in adolescence developmental process, where significant changes occur in social, emotional, cognitive, and behavioral domains. This study examined the associations between the PIU, mental health problems, quality of parent-adolescent relationship, and adolescent-parent conflicts among adolescents. Participants were 318 adolescents (56.9% girls and 43.1% boys), whose ages ranged between 14 and 18 years, with a mean age of 15.79 (SD =0.87), enrolled in various high school programs in Ankara. Participants completed the Problematic Internet Use Scale-Adolescent, the Quality of the Parent-Adolescent Relationship, the Adolescent-Parent Conflict Scale, and the Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire. Significant relationships were found between the PIU, mental health problems, quality of parent-adolescent relationship, and adolescent-parent conflicts. Correlation analysis indicated that PIU was positively related with adolescent-parent conflicts, negative quality relationship, and difficulties, while it was negatively related with disclosure, positive quality relationship, and prosocial behaviors. Adolescent-parent conflict was also positively related with negative quality relationship and negatively related with disclosure, positive quality relationship, and prosocial behaviors. Multiple regression analysis showed that excessive use and social benefit of Internet significantly predicted difficulties and adolescent-parent conflicts. Disclosure and positive quality relationship respectively predicted prosocial and adolescent-parent conflicts while negative quality relationship predicted difficulties and adolescent-parent conflict. These results elucidate our understanding of the association between the PIU, quality of parent-adolescent relationship, adolescent-parent conflict, and mental health problems. This would have important implications for prevention of the spreading of these problems.

Abstract:Objectives: In this study, the association between parents’ attitudes and internet addiction among adolescent high school students was investigated through some sociodemographic variables. Methods: The research was carried out with 385 students studying in four high schools in western Turkey. Sociodemographic characteristics, parental attitude scale and internet addiction scale were used in the study. Descriptive statistics, logistic regression analysis and structural equation modeling analysis were applied. Results: The results of multivariate logistic regression analysis demonstrated that there was a significant relationship between the combined mean score obtained from the Parental Attitude Scale and the mean score obtained from the Internet Addiction Scale, and that authoritarian parenting attitude increases the risk of internet addiction [OR = 1.70 (95% CI: 1.33–2.18)]. In the structural equation modeling analysis, the model summary fit values were determined to be at a good level (χ 2 /df = 2.86, GFI = 0.97, RMSEA = 0.073) regarding the relationship between parental attitude and internet addiction. Conclusion: Adolescents’ internet addiction levels changes related to their parents’ democratic attitude evolve.

[Excessive Use Patterns and Internet Use Disorders: Effects on Psychosocial and Cognitive Development in Adolescence]

Abstract:The growing availability of digital technologies has led to increased rates of using them as a part of daily recreational activity among adolescents. Despite their positive effects, there are ongoing debates of potential harm and health-related negative consequences, particularly when internet activities are performed excessively. This contribution provides an overview on negative aspects of digital technologies by presenting a selection of empirical findings. This overview focuses on a selection of recent methodologically sound studies investigating potential negative effects of digital technologies on the development of adolescents. As main constructs, effects on psychosocial and cognitive development and internet use disorders were investigated. Recently published studies point to substantial associations between internet overuse and negative consequences. Habitual, intense use of the internet is related to higher rates of internalizing symptoms, cognitive distortions, and heightened rates of internet use disorders among adolescents. Given these findings it seems recommendable to provide a close parental monitoring of adolescents discovering virtual worlds. By applying clear rules and supporting development of media literacy, functional use habits can be empowered and harmful effects prevented.The new clinical phenomenon of internet use disorder and its high prevalence among adolescents represents a new challenge for treatment services.
Internet Use and Perceived Parental Involvement among Adolescents from Lower Socioeconomic Groups in Europe: An Exploration

Abstract:Internet usage is a salient developmental factor in adolescents' lives. Although relevant correlates of Internet use have been documented earlier, there is a lack of information on lower socioeconomic status groups. This is important, as these adolescents have increased risk of negative online experiences. The current survey aimed to explore Internet use and parental involvement amongst adolescents from areas of socio-economic disadvantage in 30 urban schools across five European countries. A total of 2594 students participated, of whom 90% were 14-16 years. Virtually all adolescents of socioeconomic disadvantage had Internet access, with 88.5% reporting spending more than two hours per day online, often on apps such as Instagram, Snapchat, and YouTube. Almost one-third of adolescents did not talk with their parents about their Internet use and almost two-thirds indicated that their parents were only a little or not interested in their Internet use. A consistent finding across countries was that girls more often talked with their parents about their Internet use and more often reported that their parents were interested in their Internet use than boys. The results suggest that parents have an important task in explicitly showing interest in their adolescents' Internet use, with special attention needed for boys.

Abstract:Introduction The use of technology in many areas of daily life is widespread among both children and adults. Excessive and inappropriate use of technological aids causes significant problems in physical, psychomotor, psychological and social stages of development, especially in childhood. One of the reasons for some problems that arise in adulthood, such as communication problems, anxiety disorders, obesity, musculoskeletal disorders and tendency to violence is the excessive and inappropriate use of technology in childhood. For this reason, it is of great importance to complete the developmental stages in childhood in a healthy way. Objectives The aim of this study was to qualitatively assess the technology use habits of 48-72 month old preschool children and their parents. Methods The study is a qualitative research conducted among the parents of children in Eskişehir and Bolu between March and June 2023. A semi-structured form was used for the personal interviews with the 25 parents who constituted the study group. The interviews were recorded. The audio recordings were then transcribed and a thematic content analysis was conducted. The main themes of the interviews concerned the habits of parents' and children's in the use of technology at home, the content used on technological devices and how it is controlled, and the arrangements for technology use at home. Results In the interviews, parents reported that when they needed to use technological devices, they most often chose a time and place when the children were not present or asleep. When children spent more time at home, this was the most common reason for increased technology use, while the most common reason for decreased use was that children spent more time outside the home. Most parents limited the amount of time their children's daily technology using time. It was found that children generally complied with these restrictions, and when they did not, they often expressed themselves with reactions such as sulking/angry/crying. Conclusions This study emphasizes that the most important factor determining children's attitudes towards technology use is their parents' attitudes towards technology use In order for children to develop a positive attitude towards technology use, it can be beneficial for parents to regulate and control their children's technology use as well as their own. Abstract:Digital resources have begun to be used frequently by both children and parents. Digital resources, which are used very frequently, have entered our lives more and more with the pandemic with the development of technology. Children are now regular users of smartphones and tablets, so children's early digital interactions have brought new concepts into parent-child relationships and the role of the parent. It is thought that it will be important to re-examine the self-efficacy and attitudes of digital parents in this regard and the factors affecting the family-child relationship. Digital parenting is explained as parental efforts and practices aiming at understanding, supporting, and regulating children's activities in digital environments. Accordingly, this study aims to examine the correlation between parents' digital parenting self-efficacy and digital parenting attitudes. The study group of this research consists of 434 parents whose children attend primary school living in different provinces of Turkey. In the research, "Demographic Information Form" and "Digital Parenting Self-Efficacy Scale" and, "Digital Parenting Attitude Scale" were used as data collection tools. Frequency, percentage, standard deviation, correlation, regression, multiple regression, and two-way analysis of variance statistical techniques were used in the analysis of the data. As a result of the research, it was concluded that the digital parenting self-efficacy and digital parenting attitude have a moderate correlation and some of the variables are important predictors on the digital parenting self-efficacy.

Abstract:This study aims to examine the relationships between internet addiction and parental attitudes of students in adolescence in terms of some variables. The universe of the research consists of students (9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grades) studying at a public school in Karşıyaka district of İzmir province. A total of 386 students participated in the study. The data of the study were obtained by using the "Parent Attitude Scale", "Internet Addiction Scale" and "Personal Information Form". The obtained data were analyzed using the SPSS program. Considering the findings of the study, a significant relationship was found between parental attitudes and internet addiction. Statistically significant relationships were found between internet use, having a romantic relationship, parental attitudes and internet addiction in adolescents before and during school. A positive and low-level significant relationship was found between the protective, democratic and authoritarian parental attitudes perceived by the adolescents and the level of dependency.
Problematic Internet use in Adults: The Role of Happiness, Psychological Resilience, Dispositional Hope, and Self-control and Self-management

Abstract:There is increasing literature examining the use of problematic internet in the context of psychological factors. Most of these studies are focused on the young population. On the other hand, the prolongation of human life and the increasing rate of adult individuals in society's population cannot be ignored. It is seen that the number of research examining the use of problematic internet in the context of psychological factors is quite limited. In this current study, the problematic internet usage of primary and secondary school students' parents was examined in happiness, psychological resilience, dispositional hope, self-control and self-management. The research was conducted on 1123 parents. Path analysis was performed to discover the relations between the structures. As a result of the path analysis, it was determined that there is a significant negative relationship between problematic internet use and happiness, problematic internet use and psychological resilience, problematic internet use, and dispositional hope. According to these findings, adults' high happiness levels, psychological resilience, and hope levels will reduce their problematic internet use. It has been determined that there is a significant indirect relationship between self-control and self-management and problematic internet use. Happiness, psychological resilience, and dispositional hope mediating role in this relationship. Increasing parents' happiness levels, developing psychological resilience, increasing dispositional hope levels, and developing self-control and self-management skills will reduce problematic internet use. In line with the findings, what can be done to reduce the use of problematic internet has been discussed.
The relationships of parents' mental well-being and sociodemographic characteristics with digital parenting awareness: Structural equation model analysis

Abstract:Purpose This study aimed to explain the relationships between parents' mental well-being and sociodemographic characteristics with digital parenting awareness. Design and methods This cross-sectional study used structural equation modeling. It was conducted between January and May 2023 in a province in the Mediterranean region of Turkey with 262 parents with children aged 5–11 years. Research data were collected using the Personal Information Form, the Digital Parental Awareness Scale, and the Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-Being Scale. Results Parents' mental well-being and digital parenting awareness were significantly associated with the sub-dimensions of being a negative model ( β = −0.313), digital negligence ( β = −0.187), efficient use ( β = 0.284), and protection from risks ( β = 0.432; all p < 0.001). Additionally, parental mental well-being, parent's internet usage time (years), the perception that their child/children are using digital tools unnecessarily, the monthly income of the family, parent's age, and education levels significantly impact digital parenting awareness ( p < 0.05). Conclusions Parents' mental well-being was moderately and significantly associated with digital parenting awareness. Furthermore, the high number of years of internet usage by parents, having high levels of education and income, being younger, and the perception that their children use digital tools unnecessarily are positively related to digital parenting awareness.

Abstract:Objective: This study aimed to examine the relationship between problematic internet use and emotion regulation in adolescents diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Methods: Adolescents diagnosed with ADHD were given the Young Internet Addiction Scale (YIAS). They were divided into two groups problematic internet use (PIU) above 50 points (n=41) and normal internet use (NIU) below 50 points (n=41). The groups were compared by giving the AtillaTurgay DSM-IV Based for Child and Adolescent DistruptiveBehaviour Disorders Rating Scale (ATS) to the parents and the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS) to the adolescents. Results: The sample consisted of 25 (30.5%) girls and 57 (69.5%) boys, with a mean age of 14±1.8 years. Major depressive disorder (p=0.012), conduct disorder (p=0.034), and elimination disorder (p=0.040) were significantly higher in the PIU group compared to the NIU group. The mean scores of the YIAS, Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) subscale of ATS, and the goals subscale of DERS were higher in the PIU group (p<0.05). There was a significant positive correlation between YIAS and DERS (p=0.030). Conclusion: The attendance of ADHD with problematic internet use increases emotion regulation difficulties and morbidity. There is a need for studies with a larger sample size and including healthy controls.
Factors Affecting Problematic Internet Use: Rejectful Parental Attitudes During Childhood

Abstract:Studies examining the effects of perceived parental rejectful attitudes during childhood and emotional deprivation on problematic Internet use based on inter-factorial analysis are limited. The aim of this research is to examine the effects of the above-mentioned factors on problematic Internet use in people aged 18 years and over. This study used quantitative methods and convenience sampling. The sample consisted of 341 individuals aged 18 years and older. Data collection tools included a personal information form, perceived parental attitudes scale-child form, Young Internet addiction test short form, and Young schema scale short form-3. According to the results obtained in this study, there is a positive correlation between perceived rejectful parental attitudes in childhood, emotional deprivation, and problematic Internet use. Additionally, it was observed that perceived rejectful parental attitudes during childhood had a positive direct effect on problematic Internet use, and emotional deprivation played a positive and partial mediating role in this relationship. Finally, it has been observed that various sociodemographic and social skill factors have a preventive effect on emotional deprivation and problematic Internet use. Various recommendations were made regarding the results obtained at the end of this study.

Abstract:Parental factors in internet and computer game addiction in adolescence: An overview Abstract. Objective: Internet-related disorders (IRD) in adolescents and young adults are closely linked to family factors. However, few research and review articles include the family. To this end, N = 87 scientific papers were integrated into the literature review. Method: The present work gives an overview of parental factors that can be involved in the development, maintenance, and reduction of symptoms. Results: The literature provides clear connections between the parent-child relationship and IRD in adolescents and young adults. The quality of parent-child communication appears to be a promising approach for influencing IRD symptoms. There are indications that, at least for some families, encouraging the time spent together could be helpful. Regarding educational aspects, a distinction should be made between different areas. Parental knowledge and control of internet use seem to be protective factors. The effect of rules and restrictions, however, is unclear. Conclusions: To change IRD symptoms, it makes sense to improve the parent-child relationship. However, the ways to achieve that have hardly been explored. Recommendations regarding parenting strategies (e. g., rules and restrictions) should be formulated very carefully, as the effects are still unclear. The integration of parents in prevention and intervention efforts is advocated by many researchers, but there only individual studies have considered parents in the context of interventions.

Abstract:Social media platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, are now part of almost everyone's social life, especially for the newer generations. Children and teenagers grew up together with these Internet-based services, which have become an integral part of their personal and social life. However, as reported in various studies, psychological and psychiatric problems are sometimes associated with problematic usage of social media. The primary purpose of this review is to provide an overview of the cognitive, psychological, and social outcomes correlated with a problematic use of social media sites during the developmental stages, from age 10 to 19 years. With a specific focus on depression, anxiety, eating, and neurodevelopmental disorders, the review also discusses evidence related to genetic and neurobiological issues, together with the implications in clinical work and future directions under a multidisciplinary perspective. While the scientific community has made significant progress in enhancing our understanding of the impact of social media on teenagers' lives, more research integrating biological and environmental factors is required to fully elucidate the development of these disorders.

Abstract:This study investigates the relationship between ADHD symptom severity, metacognition, problematic social media use, and cyberbullying/cybervictimization in treatment-naïve adolescents. Understanding these relationships is vital for enhancing ADHD intervention strategies. Using a cross-sectional design, 97 adolescents meeting DSM-5 criteria for ADHD without any comorbidity and 97 healthy controls were assessed. Measures included the Metacognitions Questionnaire for Children, Social Media Disorder Scale, Revised Cyberbullying Inventory-II, and Revised Conners' Parent Rating Scale-Short. The comparisons were performed with independent samples' t tests and the associations were estimated by using Pearson's bivariate correlations and multiple regression analyses. Results revealed that adolescents with ADHD exhibited higher levels of dysfunctional metacognitions, problematic social media use, cyberbullying, and cybervictimization compared to controls. Regression analysis showed significant positive associations between ADHD symptoms, specific metacognitions (e.g., positive meta-worry, cognitive monitoring), and problematic social media use. This study, the first of its kind among treatment-naïve ADHD adolescents, provides valuable insights into the relationship between ADHD symptoms and particular metacognitions (i.e. positive meta-worry, cognitive monitoring) and problematic social media use. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of ADHD in adolescence and may inform the development of targeted prevention and treatment strategies, particularly relevant given adolescents' susceptibility to social media's influence and their potential for cognitive flexibility in rehabilitation contexts.

Abstract:Bu araştırmada, ebeveynlerin dijital ebeveynlik tutumları ile ergenlerde internet bağımlılığı ve duyguları yönetme becerileri arasındaki ilişkinin belirlenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Bu amaç doğrultusunda Kayseri ilinde lise öğrenimine devam etmekte olan 17-18 yaş grubu ergen ve ebeveynleriyle çalışma gerçekleştirilmiştir. Araştırmada örneklem seçimi yapılırken çok aşamalı örnekleme yönteminden yararlanılmıştır. Araştırmaya 231 lise öğrencisi ve 231 ebeveyn olmak üzere toplamda 462 kişi katılmıştır. Araştırmada örneklem büyüklüğünün seçilmesinde Krejcie ve Morgan (1970)’ın belirlemiş oldukları örneklem büyüklüğü tablosundan yararlanılmıştır. Araştırma verileri Dijital Ebeveynlik Tutum Ölçeği, İnternet Bağımlılığı Ölçeği-Kısa Formu ve Duyguları Yönetme Becerileri ölçekleri kullanılarak toplanmıştır. Araştırma verilerine uygulanan normalizasyon testi sonuçlarına göre bağımsız örneklemler t-testi, Mann Whitney U testi, Kruscal Wallis H testi, Pearson Korelasyon Analizi ve basit doğrusal regresyon analizi işlemleri uygulanarak bulgulara ulaşılmıştır. Araştırma sonucunda, ebeveynlerin dijital ebeveynlik tutumları ile internet bağımlılığı düzeyi arasında pozitif yönlü anlamlı bir ilişki olduğu görülmüştür. Duyguları yönetme becerileri ve internet bağımlılığı düzeyi arasındaki ilişkiye bakıldığında ise değişkenler arasında negatif yönlü orta düzeyde anlamlı bir ilişki olduğu görülmüştür. Ayrıca dijital ebeveyn tutumlarının ve ergenlerin duyguları yönetme becerilerinin internet bağımlılığı düzeyini yordadığı sonucuna ulaşılmıştır.
