Abstract:Abstract Background Burnout has gained increasing attention worldwide; however, there is a lack of relevant research in China. This study investigated the prevalence and factors associated with burnout in physicians of the intensive care unit (ICU) in mainland China. Methods This cross-sectional multicenter study included critical care physicians from all provinces in mainland China (except Tibet). A self-administered survey questionnaire was conducted. It included three parts: demographic information, lifestyle and work information, and the Maslach Burnout Inventory. The levels of burnout were calculated. The factors independently associated with burnout were analyzed by logistic regression. Results Finally, 1813 intensivists participated in the survey. The participation rate was 90.7%. The prevalence of burnout and severe burnout was 82.1% (1489/1813) and 38.8% (704/1813), respectively. According to the logistic regression analysis, “difficulty in making treatment decisions” was independently associated with burnout [OR = 1.365, CI (1.060, 1.757)]. “Higher number of children” [OR = 0.714, CI (0.519, 0.981)] and higher “income satisfaction” [OR = 0.771, CI (0.619, 0.959)] were independent protective factors against severe burnout. Conclusions The burnout rate in ICU physicians in China is high. Difficult treatment decisions, the number of children, and income satisfaction are independently associated with burnout rates among ICU physicians in China. Abstract:A spike in COVID-19 cases in Taiwan’s communities caused a significant increase in workload and infection concerns among prehospital personnel working in Taiwan fire departments. The present study was aimed at investigating their health status during this period. The target population was prehospital personnel who are from Taiwan fire departments, and who responded to COVID-19 patients during the community outbreak period. A questionnaire was employed to assess their physical and mental health status. The results showed that prehospital personnel suffered from moderate to severe degrees of burnout. Workload, body burden, and perceived pressure increased significantly during this period. Participants received more support from friends, family, and colleagues than they did from authorities. The paramedics reported higher scores for personal burnout than the emergency medical technicians (EMTs). Compared to non-COVID-19 response units, special COVID-19 response units reported higher scores for workload, body burden, and supportive environment. The results suggested that personal and work-related burnout were associated with higher perceived pressure. This study is the first investigation of physical and mental health burdens among prehospital personnel in Taiwan fire departments during the COVID-19 pandemic. The physical and mental health status of these personnel should be continuously monitored, and intervention provided as necessary.

Abstract:Objectives: The incidence of occupational burnout among emergency department healthcare workers is high, and their occupational health deserves attention. Establishing a comprehensive occupational health system in medical institutions is crucial. This study aims to understand the current status of occupational burnout among emergency department healthcare workers, analyze its influencing factors, and provide references for preventing burnout in this population. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted using convenience sampling through the Questionnaire Star platform from December 2022 to January 2023 among emergency department healthcare workers. The Maslach Burnout Inventory-General Survey (MBI-GS) scale was used to assess the level of occupational burnout, and univariate analysis and binary Logistic regression analysis were employed to explore the influencing factors of burnout. Results: A total of 1 173 valid questionnaires were collected, with 946 (80.65%) respondents experiencing occupational burnout. The proportions of mild-to-moderate and severe burnout were 73.57% and 7.08%, respectively. The scores for the three dimensions of burnout among emergency department healthcare workers were as follows: emotional exhaustion (EE) 2.33±0.31; depersonalization (DP) 1.88±0.28; low personal accomplishment (LPA) 3.20±0.39. The overall score was 2.46±0.22. Factors associated with occupational burnout included being an only child (OR=1.362, 95% CI -0.707 to -0.058), the average number of night shifts per month (OR=1.167, 95% CI 0.091 to 0.272), and personal experience of workplace violence (OR=1.094, 95% CI 0.027 to 0.195) (all P<0.05). Conclusions: The incidence of occupational burnout is high among emergency department healthcare workers. Effective measures should be taken by management to promptly intervene, reduce burnout, and ensure the smooth functioning of emergency medical services.
Psychological distress, burnout level and job satisfaction in emergency medicine: A cross-sectional study of physicians in China.

Abstract:BackgroundChinese physicians are not only facing heavy work overloads, but also abuse and injury because of patient mistrust of physicians. The primary objective of the present study was to measure psychological distress, burnout levels and job satisfaction among Chinese emergency physicians. MethodsAll the physicians from the EDs of three large general hospitals were recruited to undertake a questionnaire-based survey from March to April 2012. The Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), Maslach Burnout Inventory-General Survey and Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire were used. Correlations between job satisfaction and psychological distress and burnout were calculated using the Pearson correlation. An outcome was considered statistically significant if P < 0.05. ResultsCompleted questionnaires were received from 205 (82.0%) physicians. The mean HADS anxiety subscale scores for the ED physicians and general population were 7.8 3.4 and 4.7 +/- 3.5, respectively (t = 1.526, P < 0.05). Additionally, the mean HADS depression subscale scores were 7.9 +/- 3.6 and 4.7 +/- 3.9, respectively (t = 1.567, P < 0.05). Fifty-two (25.4%) exhibited high levels of career burnout. All aspects of job satisfaction were significantly lower in the ED physicians compared with a previous report (P < 0.05). Burnout was significantly negatively correlated with intrinsic and extrinsic job satisfaction in the sampled population. ConclusionPsychological distress is prevalent in this group of ED physicians, and it deserves attention from the whole society. Burnout and job satisfaction among ED physicians are at a moderate' level. Burnout is negatively associated with higher job satisfaction.

Abstract:Objective To evaluate the prevalence of burnout, its underlying personal or occupational stressors, and impact on individual well‐being and patient care. Design Cross‐sectional survey. Participants All emergency physicians in the public and the private sector in Hong Kong. Method Self‐administered, anonymous, voluntary questionnaires were distributed in physical and electronic forms from April to June 2022. Burnout was assessed by the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI). Stressors were assessed by questions on demographic, occupational, and social background. Impact was assessed by the Patient Health Questionnaire‐9 (PHQ‐9) for depression and questions on job satisfaction and self‐perceived patient care. Results The response rate was 37.8% (n = 241). Prevalence of high overall burnout was 28.2% (n = 68), with 47.7% (n = 115) having high emotional exhaustion, 63.1% (n = 152) high depersonalization, and 56% (n = 135) low personal accomplishment. A higher burnout rate was observed in younger age, female, not married, job position (associate consultant, resident specialist, and higher trainee), working on shift duty, more night shifts, and consecutive shifts. Abstract:OBJECTIVES:The aim of this study was to determine the rate of burnout and the contributing factors behind it among physicians in Shanghai.METHODS:In this cross-sectional study, a total of 457 physicians from 21 hospitals in Shanghai completed self-reported questionnaires in June 2008. The Chinese version of the job content questionnaire (C-JCQ) and the Chinese version of the effort-reward imbalance questionnaire (C-ERI) were used to measure occupational stress. The Chinese version of Maslach Burnout Inventory (C-MBI) was used to measure burnout rate. We then performed regression analysis of physician burnout.RESULTS:The MBI model revealed that 277 physicians (60.6%) were experiencing a mild degree of burnout and that 27 physicians (5.9%) were experiencing a severe degree of burnout. In the assessment of occupational stress, most physicians (64.8%) had a demand/control ratio higher than 1, and 21.9% of all physicians had an effort/reward ratio higher than 1, indicating a high level of occupational stress exposure. Regression analyses showed higher levels of burnout among physicians of younger age, less work experience, longer working hours, on shift duty, or from highergrade hospitals. Both the JCQ and ERI models showed good predictive power for physician burnout, with the ERI model performing better.CONCLUSIONS:Physicians in Shanghai were experiencing a high degree of burnout, which was significantly associated with occupational stress as well as distinctive personal and work characteristics. Interventions aiming at reducing job-related stress can be effective approaches to prevent burnout among physicians.

Abstract:Abstract Background High occupational burnout among general practitioners (GPs) is an important challenge to China’s efforts to strengthen its primary healthcare delivery; however, data to help understand this issue are unavailable. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of burnout and associated factors among GPs. Methods A cross-sectional design was used to collect data from December 12, 2014, to March 10, 2015, with a self-administered structured questionnaire from 1015 GPs (response rate, 85.6%) in Hubei Province, Central China. Burnout was measured using a 22-item Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Services Survey (MBI-HSS). MBI-HSS scores and frequency were analyzed by the three dimensions of emotional exhaustion (EE), depersonalization (DP), and personal accomplishment (PA). Factors associated with burnout among GPs were estimated using a multiple linear regression model. Results Of the respondents, 2.46% had a high level of burnout in all three dimensions, 24.83% reported high levels of EE, 6.21% scored high on DP, and 33.99% were at high risk of PA. GPs who were unmarried, had lower levels of job satisfaction, and had been exposed to workplace violence experienced higher levels of burnout. Intriguingly, no statistically significant associations were found between burnout and the duration of GP practice, age, sex, income, practice setting, and professional level. Conclusion This is the first study of occupational burnout in Chinese general practice. Burnout is prevalent among GPs in Hubei, China. Interventions aimed at increasing job satisfaction, improving doctor-patient relationships and providing safer workplace environments may be promising strategies to reduce burnout among GPs in Hubei, China.

Abstract:Objectives: Hospitals devoted to maternal and child health represent unique healthcare institutions in China. Healthcare professionals in these hospitals attend to health services for women and children, and also provide technical services and support for district maternal and children's healthcare as well as family planning. However, few studies have examined occupational burnout among doctors employed in these hospitals. This research addresses the gap in the literature. Methods: A cross-sectional survey of obstetricians and paediatricians from 11 maternal and child health hospitals across China was conducted May through June 2017. A total of 678 people completed a self-administered questionnaire. The survey included questions about demographics, doctor-patient relationships and networks of support as well as characteristics designed to capture the occurrence of burnout, such as emotional exhaustion, cynicism and professional efficacy. T-test, variance and multiple regression analyses were used to examine the data. Results: The research revealed that 56.6% of obstetricians and paediatricians exhibited signs of occupational burnout. Poor doctor-patient relationships and high average number of weekly hours worked contributed to burnout. Additionally, low family support corresponded to physicians' low sense of professional efficacy. Conclusions: Several factors have contributed to occupational burnout among paediatricians and obstetricians at maternal and child health hospitals in China, including lack of family support, poor doctor-patient relationships and heavy workloads.

Abstract:Objective: To understand the current status of occupational stress, occupational burn-out and sleep quality among ambulance drivers in Hengyang, China and to analyse the relationship between occupational stress, occupational burn-out and sleep quality of ambulance drivers. Design: A cross-sectional study. Setting: Prehospital emergency centre of third-class hospital in Hengyang, China. Participants: From October 2023 to December 2023, a cross-sectional survey was conducted, with 213 ambulance drivers from Hengyang, China, selected as participants. Methods: General demographic questionnaires, the Chinese Occupational Stress Inventory, the Maslach Burnout Inventory and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index were used for data collection and analysis. Results: Occupational stress among ambulance drivers was positively correlated with occupational burn-out and sleep quality (r=0.528, 0.447, both p<0.01) while occupational burn-out was positively correlated with sleep quality (r=0.394, p<0.01). Occupational burn-out partially mediated the relationship between occupational stress and sleep quality among ambulance drivers, with a mediation effect value of 0.168, accounting for 26.09% of the total effect. Conclusion: The sleep quality of ambulance drivers in Hengyang, China is suboptimal, with occupational stress directly predicting sleep quality. Occupational burn-out plays a partial positive mediating role between occupational stress and sleep quality among ambulance drivers. Reducing occupational stress and burn-out is beneficial for improving the sleep quality of ambulance drivers.
Burnout and job stress of anesthesiologists in the tertiary class A hospitals in Northwest China: A cross-sectional design

Abstract:Purpose: Our purpose was to assess job stress and burnout among anesthesiologists in the tertiary class A hospitals in Northwest China, analyze the possible causes and adverse consequences of increased job stress and burnout of anesthesiologists in this region, and put forward suggestions in combination with the current national policies. Methods: We sent 500 electronic questionnaires to all anesthesiologists practicing in the tertiary class A hospitals in Northwest China from 1960 to 2017 on April 2020. A total of 336 (67.2%) questionnaires were returned and could be used for analysis. Burnout and job stress were assessed by using the modified Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Services Survey and Chinese Perceived Stress Scale, respectively. Results: First, as for emotional exhaustion, the situations of anesthesiologists with different working years and workloads are different with statistical significance (P < 0.05). Second, as for depersonalization, the situations of anesthesiologists with different ages, professional titles, working years, physical health status, and workload are different (P < 0.05). Third, as for personal accomplishment, the situations of anesthesiologists with different physical health status are different (P < 0.05). Finally, the regression results showed that the longer the fatigue working years and the worse the physical health of anesthesiologists in Northwest China, the more likely these two factors were to cause burnout (P < 0.05), as for job stress, there was a negative correlation between job stress and physical health status (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Burnout and high job pressure are common among anesthesiologists in tertiary class A hospitals in Northwest China. We should focus on the allocation of labor intensity, pay attention to the physical and mental health of employees, establish targeted incentive mechanism, and improve the system of promotion and income rises for grassroots doctors. This may be not only conducive to the quality of medical care for patients but also conducive to the development of anesthesiology in China. Trial registration: Identifier: ChiCTR2000031316.
Prevalence and factors associated with burnout among primary health-care workers in China during COVID-19: a national survey

Abstract:Background: Primary health-care workers (PHWs) managed increased workloads and pressure during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study conducted a national survey examining burnout among PHWs at the end of the COVID-19 pandemic, and identifies related factors. By doing so, it addresses the gap in understanding the burnout situation among PHWs at a national level, taking into account urban-rural disparities. Methods: We conducted a nationwide cross-sectional survey of PHWs in China from May to October 2022, covering 31 provinces. The MBI-HSS was used to measure overall burnout and emotional exhaustion (EE), depersonalization (DP), and reduced personal accomplishment (PA). We used multivariable logistic regression to identify risk factors, and subgroup analyses to identify differences between rural and urban areas. Results: 3769 PHWs from 44 primary health-care institutions completed the survey. Overall, 16.6% reported overall burnout, and the prevalence of EE, DP, and reduced PA was 29.7%, 28.0%, and 62.9%, respectively. The prevalence of overall burnout (17.6% vs. 13.7%, P = 0.004) and EE (31.5% vs. 24.8%, P < 0.001) was higher in urban than rural areas (AOR = 1.285; 95%CI, 1.021-1.617). Job satisfaction was a protective factor against burnout in both settings. The protective factors of overall burnout, EE and DP vary between urban and rural areas. Conclusions: The Mental Health Status Questionnaire-Short Form (MSQ-SF) score functioned as a protective factor against burnout across both rural and urban locales, highlighting the intrinsic link between job satisfaction and burnout. Other influencing factors differed between urban and rural areas, so interventions should be tailored to local conditions. Rural married PHWs experienced the lower prevalence of burnout indicates the support structure may play a significant role. In urban settings, it is recommended to strategically pre-emptively stock essential supplies like PPE.
Exploring Burnout, Work Addiction, and Stress-Related Growth among Prehospital Emergency Personnel

Abstract:Burnout and stress-related issues are significant concerns among medical personnel involved in emergency situations due to the high demands of their work. A cross-sectional descriptive and comparative study was conducted on 266 prehospital emergency personnel across five Romanian counties, comprising 41 physicians, 74 nurses, and 151 paramedics. Data were collected through an online form, including demographic and professional characteristics, and five validated scales. This study revealed moderate (49.3%) to high (25.9%) burnout rates, with 35% showing signs of work addiction. Despite these challenges, the personnel demonstrated high levels of stress-related growth (61.2%), strong self-discipline (74.1%), and low to moderate responsive distress (100%). Physicians exhibited higher work addiction and job satisfaction, whereas paramedics faced higher burnout, self-discipline, and distress levels. Nurses showed lower burnout and self-discipline levels. These findings highlight the prevalence of burnout and work addiction among emergency medical personnel, while also underscoring the presence of protective factors like higher self-discipline, good level of stress-related growth, and low to moderate responsive distress. The distinct differences in experiences among physicians, nurses, and paramedics emphasize the need for tailored strategies to address these issues within each group.
Factors influencing fatigue, mental workload and burnout among Chinese health care workers during public emergencies: an online cross-sectional study

Abstract:Abstract Objectives The purpose of this study was to investigate fatigue, mental workload, and burnout among health care workers (HCWs) and explore the possible underlying factors. Materials and methods An online cross-sectional survey design was used to collect data from HCWs in Chongqing, China. The online survey included the Fatigue Severity Scale, NASA Task Load Index, and Chinese version of the Maslach Burnout Inventory-General Survey to assess fatigue, mental workload, and burnout, respectively, and was conducted from February 1 to March 1, 2023. Results In this study, the incidence of fatigue and burnout among HCWs was 76.40% and 89.14%, respectively, and the incidence of moderate to intolerable mental workloads was 90.26%. Work–family conflict, current symptoms, number of days of COVID-19 positivity, mental workload, burnout and reduced personal accomplishment were significantly associated with fatigue. Mental workload was affected by fatigue and reduced personal accomplishment. Furthermore, burnout was influenced by marital status and fatigue. Moreover, there was a correlation among mental workload, fatigue, and burnout. Conclusions Fatigue, mental workload and burnout had a high incidence and were influenced by multiple factors during COVID-19 public emergencies in China.

Prevalence and Factors Associated With Burnout of Frontline Healthcare Workers in Fighting Against the COVID-19 Pandemic: Evidence From China

Abstract:Objectives The sudden outbreak of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) plunged healthcare workers (HCWs) into warfare. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of burnout and the factors associated with it among frontline HCWs fighting COVID-19. Methods A cross-sectional survey was conducted among frontline HCWs fighting against the COVID-19 in Wuhan, Harbin, and Shenzhen during the period from February 18 to March 4. Finally, HCWs were recruited using cluster sampling, 1,163 HCWs were included in the final analysis. Burnout was measured using a 22-item Maslach Burnout Inventory scale (MBI scale). Results Of the participants, 48.6% suffered from burnout, and 21.8% showed a high degree of burnout. Doctors ( b = 3.954, P = 0.011) and nurses ( b = 3.067, P = 0.042) showed higher emotional exhaustion (EE) than administrators. Participants who worked continuously for more than 8 h a day ( b = 3.392, P = 0.000), those who were unable to eat three regular daily meals ( b = 2.225, P = 0.008), whose daily water intake was no more than 800 ml ( b = 3.007, P = 0.000), who slept for no more than 6 h ( b = 1.609, P = 0.036), and who were infected or had colleagues who were infected with COVID-19 ( b = 4.182, P = 0.000) experienced much higher levels of EE, while those who could adhere to infection control procedures ( b = −5.992, P = 0.000), who were satisfied with their hospital’s infection control measures( b = −3.709, P = 0.001), and who could receive sufficient psychological crisis intervention ( b = −1.588, P = 0.039) reported lower levels of EE. Conclusion The study reveals that burnout is prevalent among frontline HCWs and that the known factors associated with burnout, such as workload, and the factors directly associated with COVID-19, such as having insufficient protection, can affect burnout symptoms in frontline HCWs. Knowledge mapping of job burnout and satisfaction of medical staff and a cross-sectional investigation of county-level hospitals in Southern China

Abstract:Background: Job burnout is a worldwide public health problem that has rarely been addressed among rural medical staff, particularly in county-level hospitals. Hence, we conducted a bibliometric study to gain global insights and research trends and a cross-sectional study to assess the current situation among medical staff of county-level hospitals in Southern China. By conducting these studies, we aim to identify factors associated with burnout among medical staff of county-level hospitals in China and provide recommendations for improvement. Methods: Relevant literature on job burnout among medical personnel was searched using the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC). CiteSpace was employed for an in-depth cluster analysis to determine research trends and identify the study population. Subsequently, a cross-sectional survey was randomly conducted in three county-level hospitals in Hunan Province of Southern China. Job burnout and satisfaction were assessed using the Maslach Burnout Inventory MBI-Human Services Survey (MBI-HSS) and Job Satisfaction Questionnaire in a total of 362 valid questionnaires collected. The influence factors of the prevalence of job burnout were investigated using logistic regression. Results: In this bibliometric study, 1626 articles were retrieved from 1999 to 2022. China lags behind the United States (US) in both the number and quality of publications in the field of medical staff burnout compared with the US. However, there is a lack of comparative research on job burnout across different job types. County-level medical staff articles are more in line with research hotspots in the field. In total, 362 valid questionnaires were obtained. The total incidence of job burnout among rural medical staff was 27.3 %. Nurses (p < 0.01, OR = 5.95), doctors (p < 0.01, OR = 6.43), and those with administrative jobs (p < 0.01, OR = 7.79) were more likely to experience burnout than those with technical jobs. Medical staff aged 40-49 years (p < 0.01, OR = 0.22) and 50-59 years (p < 0.05, OR = 0.14) were less likely to experience burnout than those aged 20-29 years. Job rewards satisfaction showed a positive correlation with job burnout (p < 0.01, OR = 1.32), but negative correlations with personal development satisfaction (p < 0.05, OR = 0.81) and work internal environment satisfaction (p < 0.05, OR = 0.81). Conclusion: Better working environments, more accessible resources, and higher job rewards contribute to job satisfaction and reduce job burnout among the medical staff of county-level hospitals in China.
Burnout and Working Status of Anesthesiologists in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau Area of China

Abstract:Background: The problems of occupational stress and burnout in anesthesiologists are raising concerns. In some regions of China, anesthesiologists experience high burnout and low job satisfaction. Data regarding anesthesiologists in high-altitude areas of China are scarce. Therefore, we conducted a survey among anesthesiologists in the Tibet Autonomous Region and Qinghai Province, focusing on the level of burnout and job satisfaction and the associated factors. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was performed in the Tibet Autonomous Region and Qinghai Province in China with an anonymous questionnaire. The following information was collected and analyzed: (1) demographic characteristics and work status; (2) job satisfaction assessed by the Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire; (3) burnout assessed by the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Service Survey; and (4) sleep patterns and physician-patient communication. Findings: A total of 133 individuals from 20 hospitals completed the survey (response rate of 82%) from March to June 2015. The overall job satisfaction score from the Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire was 76.0 ± 9.4. Thirty-seven percent of the participants (95% confidence interval (CI), 29%-45%) met the criteria for burnout. The prevalence of high emotional exhaustion, high depersonalization, and low personal accomplishment was 29% (95% CI, 22%-38%), 21% (95% CI, 16%-30%), and 42% (95% CI, 35%-51%), respectively. In a single-factor analysis, years of experience in anesthesiology, caseload, frequency of overtime work and sleep quality were associated with burnout. Interpretation: Anesthesiologists in the Tibet Autonomous Region and Qinghai Province in China showed a nearly satisfactory level of job satisfaction and a relatively low level of burnout. Measures could be taken to further reduce physicians' burnout levels and improve job satisfaction. Abstract:Background Chinese nurses working with immense stress may have issues with burnout during COVID-19 regular prevention and control. There were a few studies investigating status of burnout and associated factors among Chinese nurses. However, the relationships remained unclear. Objectives To investigate status and associated factors of nurses' burnout during COVID-19 regular prevention and control. Methods 784 nurses completed questionnaires including demographics, Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7, Patient Health Questionnaire-9, Insomnia Severity Index, Impact of Event Scale-revised, Perceived Social Support Scale, Connor–Davidson Resilience Scale, General Self-efficacy Scale and Maslach Burnout Inventory. Results 310 (39.5%), 393 (50.1%) and 576 (73.5%) of respondents were at high risk of emotional exhaustion (EE), depersonalization (DP) and reduced personal accomplishment (PA). The risk of EE, DP and reduced PA were moderate, high and high. Nurses with intermediate and senior professional rank and title and worked >40 h every week had lower scores in EE. Those worked in low-risk department reported lower scores in PA. Anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), self-efficacy and social support were influencing factors of EE and DP, while social support and resilience were associated factors of PA. Conclusion Chinese nurses' burnout during COVID-19 regular prevention and control was serious. Professional rank and title, working unit, weekly working hours, anxiety, PTSD, self-efficacy, social support and resilience were associated factors of burnout.

Abstract:Objective: After the end of COVID-19, medical staff were immediately faced with a high workload, leading to widespread occupational burnout. This study aims to explore the level and influencing factors of burnout among medical staff during this period, as well as its relationship with anxiety and depression. Methods: The participants' levels of burnout were assessed using Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Services Survey (MBI-HSS), and the reliability and validity of the questionnaire were evaluated through Cronbach's α and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA). Independent sample t -test, chi-square test, and Pearson analysis were employed to determine the correlation between two sets of variables. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were conducted to identify significant factors influencing burnout. Finally, nomograms were used to predict the probability of burnout occurrence. Results: This study collected a total of 1,550 questionnaires, and after excluding 45 questionnaires that were duplicates or incomplete, a sample of 1,505 (97.1%) participants were included in the final statistical analysis. Both Cronbach's α and the fit indices of CFA demonstrated excellent adaptability of the Chinese version of MBI-HSS in this study. The overall prevalence rates for emotional exhaustion (EE), depersonalization (DP), and diminished personal accomplishment (PA) were 52.4, 55.3, and 30.6%, respectively. Obtaining psychological support, health condition, relationship with family members, and insufficient sleep were identified as common contributing factors to burnout among medical staff. Additionally, age and promotion pressure were also associated with burnout among doctors, and exceeding legal working hours was an important factor for nurse burnout. The C-index for the nomograms predicting burnout among doctors and nurses was 0.832 and 0.843, respectively. Furthermore, burnout exhibited a significant linear correlation with anxiety and depression. Conclusion: After the end of COVID-19, medical staff in high workload environments were facing severe burnout, which might lead to anxiety and depression. The occupational burnout of medical staff needed to be taken seriously and actively intervened.

Abstract:Objectives Burnout is common among medical personnel in China and may be related to excessive and persistent work-related stressors by different specialties. The aims of this study were to assess the prevalence of burnout, work overload and work-life imbalance according to different specialties and to explore the effect of specialty, work overload and work-life imbalance on burnout among medical personnel. Design A cross-sectional study. Setting This study was conducted in 1 tertiary general public hospital, 2 secondary general hospitals and 10 community health service stations in Liaoning, China. Participants A total of 3299 medical personnel participated in the study. Methods We used the 15-item Chinese version of the Maslach Burnout Inventory General Survey (MBI-GS) to measure burnout. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to explore the association between medical specialty, work overload, work-life imbalance and burnout. Results 3299 medical personnel were included in this study. The prevalence of burnout, severe burnout, work overload and work-life imbalance were 88.7%, 13.6%, 23.4% and 23.2%, respectively. Compared with medical personnel in internal medicine, working in obstetrics and gynaecology (OR=0.61, 95% CI 0.38, 0.99) and management (OR=0.45, 95% CI 0.28, 0.72) was significantly associated with burnout, and working in ICU (Intensive Care Unit)(OR=2.48, 95% CI 1.07, 5.73), surgery (OR=1.66, 95% CI 1.18, 2.35) and paediatrics (OR=0.24, 95% CI 0.07, 0.81) was significantly associated with severe burnout. Work overload and work-life imbalance were associated with higher ORs for burnout (OR=1.64, 95% CI 1.16, 2.32; OR=2.79, 95% CI 1.84, 4.24) and severe burnout (OR=4.33, 95% CI 3.43, 5.46; OR=3.35, 95% CI 2.64, 4.24). Conclusions Burnout, work overload and work-life imbalance were prevalent among Chinese medical personnel but varied considerably by clinical specialty. Burnout may be reduced by decreasing work overload and promoting work-life balance across different specialties.

Abstract:Objective: This study aimed to investigate the influencing factors of burnout among grassroots medical staff in China so as to provide a reference for improving their physical, psychological, and social statuses under China's prevention and control strategy for the COVID-19 pandemic and ensuring the sustainable supply of high-quality medical resources. Methods: This study was performed on medical staff in five primary hospitals in Jiangsu Province, China, from May 1, 2022, to June 1, 2022, using a general information questionnaire and Maslach Burnout Inventory Scale. SPSS 25.0 and Stata 15.0 were used for two-track data entry and analysis. The OLS regression model was established to analyze the influencing factors for the job burnout of health care personnel. Results: Two hundred seventy valid questionnaires were analyzed. The total score of job burnout was (30.16 ± 10.99). The scores of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and self-achievement were (9.88 ± 3.839), (11.99 ± 5.68), and (8.29 ± 5.18), respectively. Feeling depressed and stressed after the pandemic, days working over the past week, and work hours per shift had a positive impact on the Maslach Burnout total score. Increased income and hours working every week had a negative impact on the Maslach Burnout total score. However, sex, age in years, degree, professional title, job category, workplace, marital status, years in practice, health status, active management of health, idea of resignation, and promotion after the pandemic did not affect the Maslach Burnout total score. Conclusion: The job burnout of medical staff is affected by health conditions, working conditions, the psychological consequences of a pandemic, wages and marital status. Hospital managers should formulate incentive measures according to different psychological changes in medical staff to create a good medical working environment under the normalization of COVID-19 pandemic prevention and control.
