Abstract:We study J/psi photoproduction via fragmentation at next-to-leading order in the QCD-improved parton model, using the nonrelativistic factorization formalism proposed by Bodwin, Braaten, and Lepage. We predict that measurements of J/psi photoproduction at DESY HERA should show a distinctive excess over the expectation based on the colour-singlet model at small values of the inelasticity variable z.

Abstract:We present a calculation of inelastic J/psi production in polarized photon-hadron collisions. We consider the photoproduction of J/psi in the energy range relevant to the DESY HERA collider. The Weizsacker-Williams approximation is adapted in the evaluation of the cross sections for ep collisions. We find that this process can give another independent test for the color-octet mechanism, and the different features for the two color-octet processes may provide further information on the mechanism for inelastic J/psi photoproduction. The discrepancy in the production asymmetry A between various sets of polarized gluon distribution functions is also found to be distinctive.

Abstract:The H1 Collaboration recently reported a new analysis on the inelastic photo- production of J/\psi mesons at DESY HERA ep collider. We show that these new experimental results are well described by the Color Evaporation Model for quarkonium production. Moreover, this new data requires the introduction of resolved photon contributions in order to explain the results on small charmonium energy fraction, indicating that colored c \bar{c} pairs also contribute to the process.

Abstract:We examine the accelerating 'obesity epidemic' in the US from the perspective of generalized language-of-thought arguments relating a cognitive hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis to an embedding context of structured psychosocial stress. From a Rate Distortion perspective, the obesity epidemic is an image of ratcheting social pathology -- indexed by massive, policy-driven, deurbanization and deindustrialization -- impressed upon the bodies of American adults and children. The resulting pattern of developmental disorder, while stratified by expected divisions of class and ethnicity, is nonetheless relentlessly engulfing even affluent majority populations.

Abstract:Abstract.Multi-electron production is studied at high electron transverse momentum in positron- and electron-proton collisions using the H1 detector at HERA. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 115 pb-1. Di-electron and tri-electron event yields are measured. Cross sections are derived in a restricted phase space region dominated by photon-photon collisions. In general good agreement is found with the Standard Model predictions. Dynamics in near-threshold $J/ψ$ photoproduction

Abstract:The study of $J/\psi$ photoproduction at low energies has consequences for the understanding of multiple aspects of nonperturbative QCD, ranging from mechanical properties of the proton, to the binding inside nuclei, and the existence of hidden-charm pentaquarks. Factorization of the photon-$c \bar c$ and nucleon dynamics or Vector Meson Dominance are often invoked to justify these studies. Alternatively, open charm intermediate states have been proposed as the dominant mechanism underlying $J/\psi$ photoproduction. As the latter violates this factorization, it is important to estimate the relevance of such contributions. We analyse the latest differential and integrated photoproduction cross sections from the GlueX and $J/\psi$-007 experiments. We show that the data can be adequately described by a small number of partial waves, which we parameterize with generic models enforcing low-energy unitarity. The results suggest a nonnegligible contribution from open charm intermediate states. Furthermore, most of the models present an elastic scattering length incompatible with previous extractions based on Vector Meson Dominance, and thus call into question its applicability to heavy mesons. Our results indicate a wide array of physics possibilities that are compatible with present data and need to be disentangled.

Abstract:The no-longer-eclipsing system SS Lac in the young open cluster NGC 7209 has been recently announced to show a constant radial velocity. Puzzled by this finding, we have monitored the system during 1997 obtaining 24 Echelle+CCD spectra over 8 orbital revolutions. Our spectra reveal a nice orbital motion with periodic splitting and merging of spectral lines from both components. An accurate orbit has been derived, together with individual masses of the stars. SS Lac presents a moderately eccentric orbit and a probably full synchronization between stellar rotation and orbital revolution.

Abstract:We employ a small x color glass condensate (CGC)+ nonrelativistic QCD (NRQCD) formalism to compute J/psi production at low p(perpendicular to) in proton-proton collisions at collider energies. Very good agreement is obtained for total cross sections, rapidity distributions, and low momentum p(perpendicular to) distributions. Similar agreement is obtained for psi' production. We observe an overlap region in p(perpendicular to) where our results match smoothly to those obtained in a next-to-leading order collinearly factorized NRQCD formalism. The relative contribution of color singlet and color octet contributions can be quantified in the CGC + NRQCD framework, with the former contributing approximately 10% of the total cross section.

Abstract:We report the recent measurements of the inclusive J/{\psi} production in pp collisions at \sqrt{s} = 2.76 TeV, in pp collisions at \sqrt{s} = 7 TeV and in Pb-Pb collisions at \sqrt{s_{NN}} = 2.76 TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The J/{\psi} mesons are detected down to pT = 0 GeV/c via their di-muon decay channel at forward rapidity (2.5 < y < 4) and via their di-electron decay channel at mid-rapidity (|y| < 0.9). A special emphasis is put on the nuclear modification factor which is compared to the predictions of current J/{\psi} production models.

Abstract:The production of dijets is measured in diffractive deep-inelastic scattering at HERA. The data were recorded with the H1 detector at DESY in the years 2003-2007. Diffractive events are selected by requiring a gap in the rapidity distribution of the hadronic systen, where no particles are produced. Two jets are selected with transverse momenta in the hadronic-centre-of-mass system larger than 4 and 5.5GeV, respectively. Cross sections are measured single- and doubledifferentially in various kinematic quantities. The data are found to be in good agreement with NLO QCD calculations based on diffractive parton densities determined frominclusive diffractive cross section measurements.

Abstract:Recent results on inclusive D^0 and D^{*+-} production in deeply inelastic ep scattering at sqrt(s)=301 GeV are summarized. The data have been collected by the H1 and ZEUS experiments at HERA. The total and the differential cross sections are discussed in the framework of LO and NLO QCD predictions. The data exhibit clear evidence for boson gluon fusion dominating open heavy flavor production in the kinematic range currently explored at HERA. The measurements of F_2^{cc}(x,Q^2) at small Bjorken x are presented. The prospects for future analyses of open charm and beauty production including detector upgrades and anticipated high luminosities are investigated.
Photoproduction of J/$ψ$ and dileptons in Pb-Pb collisions with nuclear overlap

Abstract:Photon-photon reactions and the production of J/$\psi$ meson through photonuclear reactions have been extensively studied in ultra-peripheral heavy-ion collisions, in which the impact parameter is larger than twice the nuclear radius. In recent years, coherently photoproduced J/$\psi$ and dilepton production via photon-photon interactions have also been observed in nucleus-nucleus (A-A) collisions with nuclear overlap. The former can help to constrain the nuclear gluon distributions at low Bjorken-$x$ and high energy, while the latter could be used to further map the electromagnetic fields produced in heavy-ion collisions. In addition, these measurements can shed light on the theory behind photon-induced reactions in A-A collisions with nuclear overlap, including possible interactions of the measured probes with the formed and fast expanding quark-gluon plasma. Since the produced quarkonium is expected to keep the polarization of the incoming photon due to $s$-channel helicity conservation, the photoproduction origin of the J/$\psi$ yield excess at very low transverse momentum, $p_{\rm T}$, can be confirmed by the measurement of the J/$\psi$ polarization. The ALICE detector can perform quarkonium production measurements at both mid ($|y|<0.9$) and forward ($2.5<y<4$) rapidities down to $p_{\rm T} = 0$. In the following, the new ALICE measurements of the J/$\psi$ $y$-differential cross section and the first polarization results of coherently photoproduced J/$\psi$ via the dimuon decay channel at forward rapidity in Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=$ 5.02 TeV are reported. Additionally, the measurement of an excess with respect to expectations from hadronic production in the dielectron yield, at low mass and $p_{\rm T}$, at midrapidity in Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=$ 5.02~TeV, is presented. The results are compared with available theoretical models.

Abstract:Open heavy flavour and J/psi production are powerful tools to test pQCD calculations in proton-proton collisions in the new LHC energy regime. In addition, they provide the necessary reference for the ALICE heavy-ion program. The ALICE experiment at the LHC collected proton-proton collisions at sqrt{s} = 7 and 2.76 TeV in 2010 and 2011. We report here the latest results of open heavy flavour and J/psi production at both mid- and forward-rapidity via their various hadronic and leptonic decay channels. These include, among other topics, the first LHC result on J/psi polarization, multiplicity dependence of the J/psi production, D-meson measurement down to low transverse momentum and J/psi production from B-hadron decays. Comparisons with different theoretical models will be discussed as well.

Abstract:The study of the J/$\psi$ production in pp collisions provides important information on perturbative and non-perturbative quantum chromodynamics. Using high multiplicity pp events, we can study how charmonium production depends on the event activity. These measurements are used to investigate the possible influence of multiple partonic interactions to the J/$\psi$ production and the interplay between soft and hard <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://processes.In" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> this work we report on studies of J/$\psi$ production as a function of event multiplicity in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV at mid-rapidity with ALICE. The J/$\psi$ are reconstructed via their dielectron decay channel in events where at least one of the decay electrons was triggered on by the Electromagnetic Calorimeter (EMCal). The availability of a high-$p_{\rm T}$ electron trigger enhances the sampled luminosity significantly relative to the available minimum-bias triggered data set and extends the $p_{\rm T}$ reach for the J/$\psi$ measurement. Using these data, the J/$\psi$ measurement is performed in the transverse momentum interval $8 < p_{\rm T} < 30~\textrm{GeV}/c$.

Abstract:We report on the first measurement of $J/\psi$ photoproduction from nuclei in the photon energy range of $7$ to $10.8$ GeV, extending above and below the photoproduction threshold in the free proton of $\sim8.2$ GeV. The experiment used a tagged photon beam incident on deuterium, helium, and carbon, and the GlueX detector at Jefferson Lab to measure the semi-inclusive $A(\gamma,e^+e^-p)$ reaction with a dilepton invariant mass $M(e^+e^-)\sim m_{J/\psi}=3.1$ GeV. The incoherent $J/\psi$ photoproduction cross sections in the measured nuclei are extracted as a function of the incident photon energy, momentum transfer, and proton reconstructed missing light-cone momentum fraction. Comparisons with theoretical predictions suggest an excess of the measured cross section for sub-threshold production and for interactions with high missing light-cone momentum fraction protons. The measured enhancement can be explained by modified gluon structure for high-virtuality bound-protons.
