Abstract:Electrocatalysis for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) amidst the various advanced technologies for sustainable, clean and highly efficient energy generation plays a key role. In this study, we report nickel(II) and cobalt(II) complexes of π–conjugated N–heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands to obtain the molecular electrocatalysts for OER application. The corresponding triazolium bromide salts (NHC precursors; 4 and 5) and complexes (nickel: 6 and 7; cobalt: 8 and 9) have been characterized by various spectral and analytical techniques. Additionally, the molecular structure of both the triazolium bromide salts is elucidated using single crystal XRD technique. Further, NHC complexes 6–9 were employed as molecular electrocatalysts for OER in alkaline media, which resulted in the excellent overpotential (ƞ50) of 373, 389, 415 and 424 mV vs RHE, respectively to achieve the current density of 50 mA/cm2. The observed overpotential values have been further improved to 323, 330, 348 and 373 mV vs RHE for carbon composites (graphene sheets) of complexes, 6–CP, 7–CP, 8-CP and 9–CP, respectively. Interestingly, complexes 6, 7 and 9 and carbon composites 6–CP, 7-CP, 8-CP and 9–CP displayed low overpotential (ƞ100) in the range 375–433 mV vs RHE to illustrate a current density of 100 mA/cm2. The carbon complex composite 6–CP displayed stability up to 210 mins authenticated by the amperometric measurement. A lower Tafel slope value (39.5–70.1 mV dec–1) observed for complex carbon composites, indicating faster OER kinetics as compared to the bare complexes (Tafel slope value: 89.1–122.1 mV dec–1). Electron transfer mechanism was studied by RRDE experiment by reducing the evolved oxygen to peroxide. Finally, the charge transfer resistance (Rct: 15.10–20.74 Ω) was calculated using electrochemical impedance technique. Excellent overpotential and lower Tafel slope values along with low charge transfer resistance and considerable double layer capacitance make these NHC complexes an appropriate design for the optimal OER electrocatalysts.
