Abstract:Thirteen new freshwater populations of the copepod genus Boeckella De Guerne & Richard, 1889 were found during three expeditions to New Caledonia ('La Planète Revisitée,' 2016-2018). The 12 populations from the Plaine des Lacs, which show remarkable genetic diversity among themselves, were identified as B. spinogibba Defaye, 1998, the only species of its genus known from New Caledonia until now. The sole exception, the population from Mont-Dore 22 km further east, appeared genetically and morphologically distinct from the others and is described herein as a new species. The two species are distinguished from each other by the shapes of the male and female P5, female Th5, and body colour. A previously published key is amended to separate the species. Our concatenated COI+28S phylogeny places the two New Caledonia species as a new branch within Boeckella , distinct from the branches consisting of South American, Antarctic and Australasian species. All 13 Boeckella populations inhabit the extreme south of New Caledonia, an area known for endemism and high heavy metal concentrations in the soil. Extensive mining activity in this metal-rich area, begun in 1873, is now leading to conflict with conservation goals. By using aerial photographs to trace the fate of the pond that is the type locality of B. spinogibba , we confirmed that it disappeared between 2007 and 2014 as a result of the expansion of the Goro nickel mine.

Abstract:Species of Alestidae are known to be parasitised by dactylogyrid monogeneans representing three genera, Afrocleidodiscus Paperna, 1969, Annulotrema Paperna & Thurston, 1969, and Characidotrema Paperna & Thurston, 1968. The objective of the present study was to investigate the species diversity of Monopisthocotylea of African tetras from the Lower Phongolo River and floodplain in South Africa. Four new and two previously described species of Annulotrema were identified from the gills of three species of African tetras, Brycinus imberi, Hydrocynus vittatus, and Micralestes acutidens. The collected parasites were studied using two complementary approaches: morphology of hard sclerotised structures, and molecular markers using rDNA sequence data (28S rDNA, 18S rDNA, and ITS1). Three new species, Annulotrema arcum n. sp., Annulotrema caputfemoris n. sp., and Annulotrema strepsiceros n. sp., were described from B. imberi and one species, Annulotrema retortum n. sp., from M. acuditens. Two previously described species, Annulotrema pikoides Guégan, Lambert and Birgi, 1988 and A. pseudonili Kičinjaová and Řehulková, 2017, were newly recorded from H. vittatus in South Africa. Annulotrema arcum n. sp. and A. caputfemoris n. sp. share similar male copulatory organ morphologies, suggesting a close phylogenetic relationship as sister taxa. Despite weak nodal support, A. strepsiceros n. sp. shows morphological congruence with the former two species, reinforcing their molecular linkage. The present study shows a critical need for the exploration of monopisthocotylean diversity and the paucity of available molecular data of representatives from this group. Les espèces d'Alestidae sont connues pour être parasitées par des monogènes Dactylogyridae représentant trois genres, Afrocleidodiscus Paperna, 1969, Annulotrema Paperna & Thurston, 1969 et Characidotrema Paperna & Thurston, 1968. L'objectif de la présente étude était d'examiner la diversité des espèces de Monopisthocotylea des tétras africains du cours inférieur de la rivière Phongolo et de sa plaine inondable en Afrique du Sud. Quatre nouvelles espèces d' Annulotrema et deux espèces déjà décrites ont été identifiées à partir des branchies de trois espèces de tétras africains, Brycinus imberi, Hydrocynus vittatus et Micralestes acutidens. Les parasites collectés ont été étudiés en utilisant deux approches complémentaires, la morphologie des structures sclérifiées et les marqueurs moléculaires utilisant des données de séquence d'ADNr (ADNr 28S, ADNr 18S et ITS1). Abstract:Twenty-nine dactylogyrid species were reported from teleosts collected during a survey of the parasites of fishes of Moreton Bay, Queensland, Australia, in 2016. Two new genera, Ecnomotrema n. gen. and Pleuronectitrema n. gen., were proposed, and 13 new species were illustrated and described: Atherinicus difficilis n. sp., Diversohamulus similis n. sp., and Ecnomotrema cetiosum n. sp. from Atherinomorus vaigiensis; Haliotrema apiculum n. sp. from Pempheris schwenkii; Haliotrema tugulduriforme n. sp. from Scarus ghobban; Lethrinitrema australiense n. sp., and Lethrinitrema lituus n. sp. from Lethrinus nebulosus; Tetrancistrum siganioides n. sp. from Siganus fuscescens; Ligophorus bostrychus n. sp. from Planiliza subviridis; Neohaliotrema gemmula n. sp. from Abudefduf vaigiensis; Neohaliotrema moretonense n. sp. from Ab. vaigiensis and Ab. bengalensis; and Pleuronectitrema spirula n. sp. from Pseudorhombus arsius (all from Moreton Bay); Pleuronectitrema kuwaitense Kritsky & Sey n. sp. was described from specimens collected from P. arsius in Kuwait during 1996. Abstract:Ulva is a green macroalgal genus with rich species diversity and worldwide distribution. While current knowledge on Ulva diversity focuses on temperate regions, genetic and morphological data in tropical and subtropical areas are scarce and the species richness is not clearly defined. The genus is known for its bloom-forming ability that can induce green tides leading to severe environmental and economic damage. In the last two decades, several important blooms of Ulva spp. have occurred in New Caledonia, requiring further investigations to identify the species involved. As knowledge of New Caledonian Ulva diversity is limited, an update to the Ulva spp. inventory in the area is essential. Based on Ulva specimens collected throughout New Caledonia (Grande Terre, Isle of Pines and Loyalty Islands), we (1) reassessed species diversity using species delimitation methods, (2) analysed morpho-anatomical characters to identify species and/or enrich their diagnosis, and (3) reconstructed a multilocus phylogeny (ITS, rbcL, tufA) of the genus. We found 21 secondary species hypotheses (SSHs) among our dataset, from which five were successfully assigned to U. lactuca, U. ohnoi, U. tepida, U. meridionalis and U. taeniata. Ten SSHs were defined as new species for which we provided taxonomic description, and six other SSHs were singletons that will need to be data-enriched for better interpretation. Our concatenated multilocus matrix included 61 Ulva species. Of these, 15 species were found in New Caledonia and were moderately to strongly supported. Among the Ulva species found in New Caledonia, seven are known to be bloom-forming which highlights the need for strict regulation and regular monitoring of water quality, particularly in areas exposed to strong nutrient input where these species can form green tides.

Abstract:The taxonomic status of native trout species of the Marmara and Aegean Sea drainages is evaluated and three species, Salmo duhani, S. coruhensis and S. brunoi sp. nov., are recognized. Salmo brunoi, a new species, is described from the Nilüfer River, a tributary of the Susurluk River. It is distinguished by a general brownish body color in life; few black spots (fewer than 60) on the body, generally scattered on the back and the upper part of the flank, rarely in the median part; few (fewer than 40) and small (smaller than pupil) red spots on the body, scattered on the median part and lower half of the flank; a number of black and red spots not increasing with size in both sexes; a long adipose fin (adipose-fin height 8–9% SL); a short distance between adipose-fin and caudal-fin (12–14% SL); and a short anal fin (anal-fin height 12–15% SL). Salmo brunoi sp. nov. is separated from the rest of the Marmara and Aegean trouts of Anatolia based on genome-wide distributed 187.385 unlinked SNP markers. According to the best of the authors' knowledge, whole genome data is used for the first time here to characterize a new species of trout.

Unravelling the taxonomy and identification of a problematic group of benthic fishes from tropical rivers (Gobiidae: Glossogobius)

Abstract:Flathead gobies (genus Glossogobius) include c. 40 small- to medium-sized benthic fishes found primarily in freshwater habitats across the Indo-Pacific, having biodiversity value as well as cultural and economic value as food fishes, especially in developing countries. To help resolve considerable confusion regarding the identification of some of the larger-growing Glossogobius species, a systematic framework was established using nuclear genetic markers, mitochondrial DNA barcoding and phenotypic evidence for a geographically widespread collection of individuals from the waterways of tropical northern Australia. Species boundaries and distribution patterns were discordant with those previously reported, most notably for the tank goby Glossogobius giuris, which included a cryptic species. Genetic divergence was matched with accompanying unique visual characters that aid field identification. Additional taxonomic complexity was also evident, by comparison with DNA barcodes from international locations, suggesting that the specific names applicable for two of the candidate species in Australia remain unresolved due to confusion surrounding type specimens. Although flathead gobies are assumed to be widespread and common, this study demonstrates that unrealised taxonomic and ecological complexity is evident, and this will influence assessments of tropical biodiversity and species conservation. This study supports the need for taxonomic studies of freshwater fishes to underpin management in areas subject to significant environmental change.
A new genus and species of spring snails (Caenogastropoda, Tateidae) from the ultramafic South of New Caledonia

Abstract:During an expedition in 2016, a rich fauna of freshwater gastropods of the family Tateidae Thiele, 1925 was discovered on the ultramafic terrains of the Southeast of New Caledonia (NC). Hitherto, only three of the 62 known NC family members were reported from this type of bedrock. With less than 1.5 mm in length, many of the new species are particularly small. In order to establish a methodological setup for the description and phylogenetic analyses of these new species, we here describe Viriiella touaouroua gen. et sp. nov. and assess its relationships based on three gene fragments. Viriiella is morphologically well defined and resembles Fluviopupa Pilsbry, 1911 not present in NC. In the phylogenetic analyses, though, Viriiella appeared as a member of the Hemistomia-clade, the NC tateids occurring on non-ultramafic terrain. However, Viriiella had the longest branch and, sister group to different genera in maximum likelihood and Bayesian analyses, its position was unstable, probably an artifact due to long-branch attraction. Considering that Viriiella does not share the defining character states of Hemistomia s. lat., it may well be possible that inclusion of more related genera will show that the new taxa share a most recent common ancestor with the Hemistomia-clade, but as sister group.

Abstract:Unlike their marine counterparts, tropical freshwater clupeids receive little scientific attention. However, they sustain important fisheries that may be of (inter)national commercial interest. Africa harbours over 20 freshwater clupeid species within Pellonulini. Recent research suggests their most abundant parasites are gill-infecting monogenean flatworms within Kapentagyrus. After inspecting specimens of 12 freshwater clupeids from West and Central Africa, mainly sourced in biodiversity collections, we propose 11 new species of Kapentagyrus, which we describe using their haptoral and genital morphology. Because of their high morphological similarity, species delineation relies mostly on the morphometrics of anchors and hooks. Specifically, earlier, molecular taxonomic work indicated that the proportion between the length of the anchor roots, and between the hook and anchor length, is diagnostic. On average, about one species of Kapentagyrus exists per pellonuline species, although Pellonula leonensis harbours four species and Microthrissa congica two, while Microthrissa moeruensis and Potamothrissa acutirostris share a gill monogenean species. This study more than quadruples the number of known species of Kapentagyrus, also almost quadrupling the number of pellonuline species of which monogeneans are known. Since members of Kapentagyrus are informative about their hosts’ ecology, evolutionary history, and introduction routes, this enables a parasitological perspective on several data-poor African fisheries.

No longer a circumtropical species: revision of the lizardfishes in the Trachinocephalus myops species complex, with description of a new species from the Marquesas Islands

Abstract:Trachinocephalus, a formerly monotypic and nearly circumtropical genus of lizardfishes, is split into three valid species. Trachinocephalus gauguini n. sp. is described from the Marquesas Islands and is distinguished from the two other species in the genus by having a shorter snout, a narrower interorbital space, larger eye and modally fewer anal-fin and pectoral-fin rays. The distribution of Trachinocephalus myops (type species) is restricted to the Atlantic Ocean and the name Trachinocephalus trachinus is resurrected for populations from the Indo-West Pacific Ocean. Principal component analyses and bivariate plots based on the morphometric data differentiated T. gauguini from the other two species, but a substantial overlap between T. myops and T. trachinus exists. Phylogenetic evidence based on mtDNA COI sequences unambiguously supports the recognition of at least three species in Trachinocephalus, revealing deep divergences between the Atlantic Ocean, Indo-West Pacific Ocean and Marquesas entities. Additional analyses of species delimitations using the generalized mixed Yule coalescent model and the Poisson tree processes model provide a more liberal assessment of species in Trachinocephalus, indicating that many more cryptic species may exist. Finally, a taxonomic key to identify the three species recognized here is provided.

Abstract:Gaidropsarus mauritanicus sp. nov. is described from one specimen collected using a grab sample from the Tanoûdêrt Canyon (ca. 20° N) off Mauritania at a depth of 595 m. The new species was further observed during eight remotely operated vehicle (ROV) dives along the Mauritanian slope southwards down to the Tiguent Coral Mound Complex (~17° N) in a bathymetric range between 613 and 416 m. It can be distinguished from congeners by a combination of characteristics, including large eyes (38.1% head length [HL]), large head (25.8% standard length [SL]), elongated pelvic fins (35.7% SL), low number of vertebrae (44), and coloration (pinkish with a dorsal darker brownish hue and bright blotches along the dorsal-fin base). A species-delimitation analysis performed with available cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (COI) sequences affiliated to the genus Gaidropsarus additionally supported the validity of the new species. Video analyses showed a deep-water coral-associated and protection-seeking behavior, which may explain why the species has remained undescribed until now. Additional ROV footage from separate deep-water coral sites in the North Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea further highlights the ecological behavior and hidden diversity of bathyal three-bearded rocklings. Here, we additionally discuss the biogeographical distribution of all genetically verified Gaidropsarus spp. in combination with genetic data and morphological characters. G. mauritanicus sp. nov. is closely related to a species from Tasmania (43° S), a geographical point furthest among the studied samples, which may hint to an important influence of (paleo-) oceanography on the distributions of Gaidropsarus species.
New Contributions to the Biodiversity of Ciliates (protozoa, Ciliophora) from Antarctica, Including a Description of Gastronauta Multistriata Nov. Spec.

Abstract:Antarctica is a remote and isolated biotope which makes it an ideal location for studying new and endemic species. Since there is little literature available on the diversity of ciliates in this area, a taxonomic survey of ciliates from melt-water of Collins glacier, King George Island, was carried out from January to March 2006. As a result, the morphology and infraciliature of five ciliates, including one new species, are described using live observations and silver staining: Gastronauta multistriata nov. spec., Neokeronopsis asiatica Foissner et al., 2010, Paraholosticha muscicola Kahl, 1932, Oxytricha sp., and Cyclidium glaucoma Müller, 1786. Gastronauta multistriata nov. spec. is distinguished from its congeners by the following combination of characters: cell size in vivo on average 80 × 40 μm; 5–9 kineties in left ciliary field; 18–23 kineties in right ciliary field, including 10–12 postoral kineties; 7–10 preoral kineties; dorsal brush along anterior dorsal margin, consisting of 5–8 groups of basal bodies. The only minor differences between the current population of N. asiatica and a previously described Antarctic population are the numbers of caudal cirri (6–10 vs. 8–15) and dorsal kineties (11–13 vs. 12–18). Paraholosticha sterkii is synonymised with P. muscicola. The Antarctic population of C. glaucoma corresponds well with a former population from China, the only difference being the number of kinetids in SK n (11–17 vs. 9–11). This work will contribute to the understanding of ciliate diversity in this little studied area.

Abstract:Oreoglanis brevicula , a new species of sisorid catfish, is described from a single specimen collected in northern Laos. It belongs to the Oreoglanis delacouri group in lacking a distinct median notch on the posterior margin of the lower lip and can be distinguished from congeners by the following combination of characters: nasal barbel length 31% of head length, pectoral fin not reaching pelvic-fin origin, body depth at anus 10% of standard length (SL), adipose fin with base 36% SL and posteriorly separate from dorsal procurrent caudal-fin rays, caudal peduncle length 19% SL, caudal peduncle depth 4% SL (= 4.3 times in peduncle length), lunate caudal fin, and 42 vertebrae.

Abstract:Otolith shape analysis has been used in a number of studies as an inexpensive and powerful method for categorising fish in individual stocks. Elliptical Fourier analysis was used on three different amphidromous Sicyopterus species. Sicyopterus lagocephalus is a widespread species while the other two have a limited distribution area, Sicyopterus aiensis being endemic to Vanuatu, and Sicyopterus sarasini to New Caledonia. Both endemics live in sympatry with the widespread species. The otolith shape of all fish sampled was a clear species differentiator, thereby demonstrating that otolith shape is species-specific. At an intraspecific level there are different river populations within samples from Vanuatu, indicating a western group and an eastern “central” group.These results are congruent both for the endemic species, S. aiensis and for the cosmopolitan species. Finally, we found that, for S. lagocephalus, the cosmopolitan species, New Caledonian samples are close to western Vanuatu samples, the latter two being well differentiated from the eastern “central” Vanuatu samples. The explanation for these results may lay either in the influence of environmental factors on the otolith shape, or in the influence of common early life history thus reflecting genetic factors, or a combination of both.

Abstract:Four new species of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi (Glomeromycota) were isolated from the rhizosphere of endemic metallophytic plants in ultramafic soils in New Caledonia (South Pacific) and propagated on Sorghum vulgare. Acaulospora saccata and A. fragilissima are placed in the Acaulosporaceae, Scutellospora ovalis in the Gigasporaceae, and Rhizophagus neocaledonicus in the Glomeraceae. The novelty of these species is supported by morphological characters of spores and phylogenetic analyses of sequences of the rDNA region, comprising partial small subunit rRNA gene, the internal transcribed spacers, 5.8S rRNA gene, and the partial large subunit rRNA gene. New Caledonia is known for its high degree of endemism in plants, which is due to its geographic position and geological history. This is the first taxonomic study exploring local Glomeromycota of this island, which may help to address the question of possible AMF endemism in future studies.

Abstract:In the present study, 15 new records from Kavaratti Atoll are added to the ichthyofaunal diversity of the Lakshadweep Archipelago and six to the Indian fish fauna based on underwater photographs and videos. Fishes were recorded from both lagoon and forereef areas off Kavaratti. The new records include Cirripectes auritus (Blackflap blenny), Cirripectes polyzona (Barred blenny), Ecsenius bicolor (Bicolor blenny), Glyptoparus delicatulus (Delicate blenny), Amblyeleotris wheeleri (Gorgeous prawn-goby), Eviota punyit (Punyit dwarfgoby), Eviota cf. teresae (Viridescent dwarfgoby), Cirrhitichthys falco (Dwarf hawkfish), Halichoeres leucoxanthus (Canarytop wrasse), Pseudocheilinus evanidus (Disappearing wrasse), Coris latifasciata (Broad banded wrasse), Pomacentrus xanthocercus (Yellowtail damsel), Plectroglyphidodon luteobrunneus (Indian gregory), Pomacentrus indicus (Indian damsel) and Synodus dermatogenys (Sand lizardfish). Six species, G. delicatulus, E. cf. teresae, E. punyit, P. xanthocercus, P. evanidus and C. latifasciata represent new records for Indian waters. The genus Amblyeleotris is recorded for the first time from Lakshadweep.

Knowledge and Management of Aquatic Ecosystems

Abstract:The Neotropical region, hosts a quarter of all freshwater fish species, while providing important food resources for local human populations. The management of neotropical freshwater ecosystems is thus of primary importance for both biodiversity conservation and local human sustainability. Recent technological advances in the field of genomics offer new tools for managers and practitioners to monitor entire fish assemblages using environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding, or to detect specific species or populations using targeted eDNA. The availability of species genomics information is thus crucial to implement eDNA monitoring methods. Nevertheless, specific primers allowing species-centred approaches are lacking for most species. In French Guiana, only 18 mitochondrial genomes of freshwater fishes have been published out of more than 400 species known from French Guiana. In this study, we provide genomic resources for Myloplus rhomboidalis (locally called Koumarou), Hoplias aimara (Aimara) and Tometes trilobatus (Pakou), three exploited fish species in French Guiana. We provide complete mitochondrial genomes and tools for the detection of the three fish species by developing a targeted species approach using digital PCR (dPCR) for each species.

New records of nine monogenean parasites infesting non-native freshwater fish species in New Zealand

Abstract:Twenty-one non-native freshwater fish species have established populations in New Zealand, yet only two have been reported with monogenean infestations; grass carp, Ctenopharyngodon idella (Valenciennes in Cuvier and Valenciennes, 1844) and western mosquitofish, Gambusia affinis (Baird and Girard, 1853), each with two identified monogenean species. Based on the diversity of monogeneans known from New Zealand's non-native freshwater fish species in their native and other invaded ranges, it is likely that many other monogeneans could be extant in the country. Accordingly, we surveyed monogeneans from seven freshwater fish species. Eleven monogenean species were found, including nine previously unreported from New Zealand. One represented a genus previously unrecorded in the country, the ancyrocephalid Ligictaluridus pricei (Mueller, 1936), infesting the gills of Ameiurus nebulosus (Lesueur, 1819). Six dactylogyrid monogenean species were found infesting Carassius auratus (L.): Dactylogyrus anchoratus (Dujardin, 1845), D. dulkeiti Bychowsky, 1936, D. formosus Kulweic, 1927, D. inexpectatus Izyumova, 1955, D. intermedius Wegener, 1909 and D. vastator Nybelin, 1924. Further, a Gyrodactylus species was observed from the gills of Carassius auratus , which could not be confidently identified to the species level. Finally, Dactylogyrus minutus Kulweic, 1927, was recorded from Cyprinus rubrofuscus Lacépède, 1803.
