Abstract:Ancient DNA is DNA sequences extracted from ancient biological remains. This paper briefly reviews the 20-year history of ancient DNA study from its early period mainly with the technol- ogy of cloning to later use of PCR technology and the mature technology of extracting DNA from fossils. In the recent years, because of the emergence of many problems and fierce controversy in ancient DNA study, scientists began to consider the authenticity of ancient DNA and put forward some strict standards. Here, we discuss the significance and progress of ancient DNA studies involv- ing anthropology, systematic and evolutionary biology, biological domestication, and archeology. 特邀综述

Abstract:The Chinese people started to add organic matter to lime or tabia' no later than 1500 years ago, and thus created the traditional Chinese organic-inorganic mortar featured in this paper, which has been demonstrated by a great deal of archaeological evidence. According to the ancient literature records, the traditional Chinese organic-inorganic mortar was widely used for architectural purposes, such as rammed earthen buildings, finishing mortars, city walls, water conservancy projects and tombs. To verify the authenticity of the literature, four types of architecture were chosen from eastern China, and the obtained samples were analysed by chemical methods and FT-IR. The experimental results turned out to be consistent with the literature.

Abstract:The goal of this investigation is to characterize the mortar from the ancient city wall of Xindeng in Fuyang, Hangzhou (China), which reveals a history of nearly 1800 years. Several approaches were used to analyze seven specimens obtained from this ancient city wall, and physical properties, mechanical performances, binder/ aggregate ratios of these specimens were then determined. However, the mixture compositions as well as the mix design vary greatly among different locations of the city wall. The results indicate that the historical wall is mainly composed of hydrated lime and sand, and parts of the specimens also contain clay. Meanwhile, calcite and quartz are the major phases present in the historical wall mortars with several impurities. Further, the specimens' great strength and large apparent density are related to the abundant aggregates used and the presence of the fragments of blue brick within the specimens.

Abstract:Samples of the jade artifacts unearthed from the Liangzhu sites at Yuhang (Fanshan, Yaoshan, Huiguanshan and Tangshan) of Zhejiang province were described. The chemical composition, phase and jade structure of a hundred and more intact samples were analyzed by the non-destructive techniques of PIXE, XRD and laser Raman spectroscopy. Results showed that the minerals of the jade artifacts mostly belonged to tremolite and tremolite-actinolite. Relationship of the civilization development in the Neolithic age and the application of tremolite type mineral in jade artifacts was discussed. The contents of rare and trace elements in tremolite jade artfacts and in mineral samples were measured for the first time. The possible mineral sources of these tremolite type jade artifacts were discussed.

Abstract:Numerous experimental techniques of analysis find applications in many branches of the archaeometry. Among them, Raman spectroscopy carved out a niche in the field of diagnostic and conservation of cultural heritage. The exceptional ability to predict and discover the structural properties of materials set for Raman spectroscopy, an exclusive role among the analytic techniques, is further boosted when it is coupled with mathematical or statistical models able to deepen the studied phenomena. In this work, we present a review of recent studies where pairing Raman spectroscopy and mathematical models allowed achieving important results in the case of potteries, porcelains, ancient and modern paper, ancient jewelry, and pigment degradation. The potentialities of this approach are evidenced and analyzed in detail.

General Situation Of Ancient Textiles Research In China

Abstract:Textile is an old-aged art with extensive content. In the human history, the origin of spinning and weaving is almost at the same time with the origin of agriculture. Since ancient textiles is like an encyclopedia, studying ancient textiles not only can help us to understand the ancient science and technology, such as spinning, weaving, dyeing, finishing, chemistry, and physics, but also can help us to explore the relationship between textile and society, economy, politics, religion, culture, and art. Ancient textiles is a multi-interdisciplinary area. Researchers have been realizing the importance of ancient textiles on the archaeology area, which is not only because of the rapid development of science and technology, but also because of the overall interpretation of various disciplines. This paper describes briefly the progress of textile archaeology in the 20th century and the development of ancient textiles since 1970s in China, through which the authors also point out the problems existed in the recent research of ancient textile in China.

Abstract:Research into ancient Chinese metallurgy has flourished over recent years with the accumulation of analytical data reflecting the needs of so many archaeological finds. However, the relationship between technology and society is unlikely to be revealed simply by analysing more artefacts. This is particularly evident in the debates over the sources of metals used to manufacture the Chinese ritual bronzes of the Shang (c. 1500-1046 BCE), Western Zhou (c. 1046–771 BCE) and Eastern Zhou (c. 771–256 BCE) dynasties. This article recognises that approaches to analytical data often fail to provide robust platforms from which to investigate metallurgical technology within its wider social and cultural contexts. To address this issue, a recently developed multivariate approach is applied to over 300 Chinese ritual bronzes from legacy data sets and nearly 100 unearthed copper-based objects from Anyang and Hanzhong. Unlike previous investigations that have relied predominantly on interpreting lead isotope signatures, the compositional analyses presented here indicate that copper and lead used to manufacture the bronzes are derived from mining progressively deeper ores in the same deposits rather than seeking out new sources. It is proposed that interpretations of social, cultural and technological change predicated on the acquisition of metals from disparate regions during the Chinese Bronze Age may need to be revised.

Abstract:The interdisciplinary study of cultural heritage has become a scholarly hotspot in archaeology. Ancient jade serves as an important symbol of Chinese traditional culture, so the study of it is a critical part of this trend. The past 30 years have witnessed great progress in research on ancient jade, with the involvement of basic theory and the technological application of many science subjects. This paper summarizes the research status, methodology and prospects in the research on raw material (jade texture), provenance and secondary change of Chinese ancient jade, in the hope of benefiting future studies of ancient jade.
Study on the Characterization of Differential Weathering Feature Based on Surface Roughness Theory and 3D Laser Scanning: A Case Study of the Suoyang Ancient City

Abstract:Earthen heritage sites have been undergoing lengthy surface weathering since they were built, which can pose a severe threat to the protection and utilization of these cultural treasures. Especially for differential weathering, one of the most common surface weathering patterns of earthen heritage sites in northwest-ern China, has not been well studied yet. Hence, in this paper, Suoyang Ancient City was selected as the study area, and six analysis domains (S1 to S6) exhibiting various differential weathering degrees were determined on wall faces and their morphological data were collected by a 3D laser scanner. Based on the point cloud data, the morphology of each domain was digitalized and reconstructed, and ten typi-cal profiles were selected for roughness analysis. Concretely, for these profiles, six roughness parameters, including average asperity inclination (Ai), mean curvature (R'da), textural slope parameter ( Z 2 ), rough-ness coefficient (Rp), self-affine fractal dimensions ( A and D ) and directional roughness metric (G(i)) were calculated to characterize their differential weathering features. The results show that the wall with a higher differential weathering degree has greater values of Rp, G(i), A and D . It can also be found that different roughness indicators can reflect different wall surface morphological characteristics. In addition, the main driver of differential weathering developing is the prevailing sediment-laden wind, and the de-gree of differential weathering is also affected by the building techniques, wall endowment environment, wall orientation and morphology. Finally, according to the roughness values and wall surface morphology, the differential weathering degrees were classified into five grades (from level I to level V). In this case, the differential weathering degrees of S2 (level IV) and S5 (level IV) are the highest, followed by S3 (level III), S6 (level III), S1 (level II) and S4 (level II) respectively. Overall, the proposed approach based on 3D scanning and surface roughness is feasible to characterize the differential weathering degree, contributing to better prevention and mitigation of damage on earthen heritage sites.& COPY; 2023 Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR). Abstract:By use of proton induced x ray emission(PIXE),x-ray diffraction(XRD) and laser Raman spectroscopy (LRS),the chemical composition and mineralogic characteristics of the jade artifacts unearthed from Gaochengdun site in Jiangyin city have been studied.The raw materials used for making these jade artefacts and their resources are discussed based on the experimental results.These analyses shows that the main minerals of these 46 jade artifacts is 67.4%tremolite,and that they have good quality and may have been taken from deposits of the same mineralization type.The present study indicates that the non-destructive analytical techniques offer an effective new means for characterizing ancient jade artefacts.These research results provide a scientific means for tracing the sources of raw materials used for jade artefacts of the Lingzhu Culture.

Abstract:Delving into the past through the study of pottery, this research employs scientific techniques to explore Jiangzhai pottery from circa 3000–4000 BCE. The investigation revealed that the red and grey pottery, despite their color differences, have similar elemental compositions, suggesting that these variations are not due to elemental differences but likely due to a higher concentration of Fe3+ in the red pottery. Analysis of the pigments using elemental analysis, polarized light microscopy, and XRD showed that the red pigment contains ochre, the black is a mix of pyrolusite and magnetite, and the white is composed of calcite. Additionally, thermal expansion analysis determined that the firing temperature of Jiangzhai colored pottery is around 1050 °C, with similar temperatures for both red and grey pottery, suggesting that kiln operations like stacking or overlapping are likely causes of the color variations. This study not only broadens our understanding of ancient pottery-making techniques and cultural practices but also emphasizes the critical role of scientific analysis in preserving and interpreting the rich artistic and technological legacy of ancient cultures.

The Non-Destructive Analysis of Some Ancient Jade Artifacts Unearthed from Henan Province by a Variety of Optical Techniques

Abstract:A total of 14 pieces of ancient jade artifact unearthed from Henan Province were non-destructively analyzed by means of a portable X-ray fluorescence spectrometer (pXRF),laser Raman spectroscopy (portable and mobile)and optical coherence tomography (OCT)technology,comprehensively.The raw materials of ancient jade artifacts could be determined accurately through the combination of pXRF and portable Raman spectrometer in a short time.With the advantages of small size and easy-operation,these two instruments are suitable to in situ non-destructive analysis of ancient jade artifacts.The results of the pXRF shows that these ancient jade artifacts can be divided into 6 categories such as rich in Si Al K,rich in Ca,rich in Si Ca,rich in Si Mg,rich in Si,rich in Ca P.Their main phases have been successfully identified by the portable Raman spectrometer.In the lab,the mobile confocal laser Raman spectrometer,which help us find the Raman vibration peak of [OH]in the tremolite jade, is used to make up the disadvantages of the portable Raman spectrometer such as lower spectral resolution,lower accuracy and narrower measuring range.We can use the OCT to analyze the transparency,fiber fineness and inclusion etc.of the jade arti-facts.The confocal laser Raman spectroscopy combined with OCT is used to analyze 2 containing inclusion of tremolite jade sam-ples.OCT image can visually display the distribution characteristics of the inclusion in these 2 samples.Confocal laser Raman spectroscopy can accurately locate the sample surface of inclusion,then we can observe the micro morphology and analyze its phase.The results show that the black inclusion is graphite.This work is very significant to study the geographical origin of jade.Through the study we find,the use of pXRF,laser Raman spectroscopy (portable and mobile)and OCT can be achieved on the identification and analysis of cultural relic’s phase composition and texture feature and meet the basic requirements of field archaeological work analysis.
Progress, Problem and Prospect: an Overview of Lithic Use-Wear Study in China

Abstract:Lithic use-wear analysis, became one of the major techniques of lithic studies in Europe and North America during 1980–1990s, was not fully and widely adopted in China until the beginning of 21st century. Over the past decades, the lithic use-wear study in China has made significant progress. This article reviews the history and development of lithic use-wear analysis in China, investigates recent international improvements and trends briefly, and then attempts to find new directions and suggestions. On the one hand, Chinese use-wear specialists have being contributed to world archaeology by: 1) supplementing the database of use-wear, and providing more regional case studies which promoted the knowledge of the prehistoric human evolution and adaptation; 2) conducting experiments on special raw materials, and providing a partial set of references of tool usage patterns in China to foreign colleagues; 3) improving understanding of subsistence strategies and origin of agriculture in China. On the other hand, some problems or limitations are still need to be considered by Chinese colleagues for lithic functional studies. And then, I suggested that we can make some adjustments and improvements through multi-disciplinary approaches, as well as train more young specialists and students and investigate more regional cases in China.

Abstract:This paper comprehensively discusses all kinds of modern scientific and technological detection methods for paper raw materials, inks, inkpads, and pigments used in ancient paper cultural relics, including imaging and spectrometric technologies. Relevant imaging methods include photography, tomography and microscopic imaging methods. Photographic methods include light transmission, infrared, ultraviolet, X-ray and neutron activation photography to display macroscopic information on a sample 's surface or inside. Tomography methods include X-ray, terahertz, and optical coherence tomographic methods to display layered information beneath the sample 's surface. Microscopic imaging methods include optical, scanning electron, transmission electron and atomic force microscopic imaging methods to display the sample's microscopic information. Spectroscopy methods with fingerprint characteristics based on the principles of wavematter interactions include chromatography, mass spectrometry, electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence spectrum, molecular fluorescence spectrum, Raman spectrum, UV-Vis-NIR-MID-THz absorption spectrum and hyperspectral methods. It shows that the comprehensive applications, complementary advantages and mutual confirmations of the above technologies are powerful means to reveal important traits of paper cultural relics, such as one 's manufacturing process, artistic features, preservation history, disease status, authenticity, method of reparation, etc.
Beyond painted pottery: a longue durée story of ceramic technology in prehistoric Northwest China

Abstract:This paper presents a study of ceramics from Northwest China from the Neolithic and Bronze Age (c. 3300–600 BCE), providing insights into variations in human–ceramic interactions over time and space. Based on macroscopic and petrographic analysis of ceramics from 10 sites, this paper shows that there is much more complexity in ceramic technology than previously thought. It identifies a development from a bi‐modal distinction between painted fine ware and rusticated coarse wares shared among communities across Northwest China to strongly localised ceramic traditions with new fabrics, vessel shapes, and decorations, some of them potentially of outside origin, reflecting considerable societal change.

Abstract:Both conservation and intervention methods must be compatible with each other and appropriate for the original building materials. Therefore, the characterization of historic building materials is indispensable for investigating chemical composition, micro-structure and morphological features to study the current condition, environmental influence and change mechanism due to natural aging or man-made decay processes. Given the great variety of chemicals which can be analyzed, complex problems related to architectural heritage materials are investigated via optimized methodologies. Among the existing techniques, optical microscopy (OM) is an inexpensive and dominating tool to obtain preliminary information on complex samples. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) can provide real three-dimensional topographies showing sample surface properties. Electron microscopes combined with energy dispersion X-ray analysis (EM-EDX) are the instruments specifically developed to acquire images of target materials at high magnification. Infrared and Raman spectroscopies are frequently used to characterize inorganic and organic compounds. Thermal analysis can rapidly and accurately measure changes in crystalline structure, dehydration and decomposition. X-ray based technologies have a wide range of applications as follows. X-ray fluorescence (XRF) is one of the most frequently used techniques for elemental analysis. X-ray diffraction (XRD) is a fast and inexpensive technique for the characterization of man-made and natural materials. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) is applied to quantify the valence and electronic levels of specific elements. X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) is a powerful technique for detecting the electronic structure of matter. UV–visible (UV–vis) spectroscopy is also of great importance in architectural heritage, which can reveal different physicochemical mechanisms causing color. Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) can effectively eliminate the pollution on the surface and detect the internal elements of the target material. Ion beam analysis can quantify trace elements with high sensitivity. Mass-based techniques are mainly applied to identify unknown organic substances at the molecular level. This review describes some classical applications of individual techniques and provides scientific support for scientists and engineers to make decisions in the context of architectural heritage.

Abstract:Jade, which is one of the most characteristic materials constituting Chinese artifacts, signifies cultural differences between ancient Chinese and western civilizations. One of the most important typical characteristics of ancient jade artifacts recovered through archeological excavations is color alterations due to human activity and natural weathering, which has led to an area of intensive research in archeology. "Alteration" refers to chemical component and structural changes in jade artifacts caused by human activity and natural weathering, which is different from the term in geology. In this study, Raman spectroscopy was used to analyze six color alterations on ancient jade artifacts unearthed from the Jinsha Site in Sichuan Province, a region famous for artifacts with colorful alterations. The colorful alterations were observed to originate from corrosion products of bronzeware. The green, black, yellow, blue, purple, and white alterations were due to malachite, tenorite, pyromorphite, azurite, diaboleite, and cassiterite, respectively. Meanwhile, organic matter and hypertoxic arsenolite were first found on ancient jade artifacts.
Nondestructive Nonlinear Optical Microscopy Revealed the Blackening Mechanism of Ancient Chinese Jades

Abstract:Jade is most valued in Chinese culture since ancient times. For unearthed jade artifacts, the alteration color resulting from weathering effects and human activities provides information for cultural heritage conservation, archaeology, and history. Currently, the noninvasive 3-dimensional characterization of jade artifacts with high chemical and spatial resolution remains challenging. In this work, we applied femtosecond pump-probe microscopy and second harmonic generation microscopy techniques to study the black alteration of an ancient jade artifact of the late Spring and Autumn period (546 to 476 BC). The direct cause of the "mercury alteration" phenomena was discovered to be the conversion of metacinnabar from buried cinnabar in the tomb. Furthermore, a 3-dimensional optical reconstruction of the black alteration was achieved, providing a high-resolution method for analyzing the blackening mechanism without the need of sample damage. Our approach opens up new opportunities to extract microscopic spatiochemical information for a broad range of alteration colors in jade artifacts.
