Abstract:In this paper we are concerned with various graph invariants (girth, diameter, expansion constants, eigenvalues of the Laplacian, tree number) and their analogs for weighted graphs -- weighing the graph changes a combinatorial problem to one in analysis. We study both weighted and unweighted graphs which are extremal for these invariants. In the unweighted case we concentrate on finding extrema among all (usually) regular graphs with the same number of vertices; we also study the relationships between such graphs.

Abstract:Bounds on the minimum degree and on the number of vertices at- taining it have been much studied for finite edge-/vertex-minimally k- connected/k-edge-connected graphs. We give an overview of the results known for finite graphs, and show that most of these carry over to infinite graphs if we consider ends of small degree as well as vertices.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics, Volume 38, Issue 1, Page 590-608, March 2024. We prove two conjectures in spectral extremal graph theory involving the linear combinations of graph eigenvalues. Let [math] be the largest eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix of a graph [math] and [math] be the complement of [math]. A nice conjecture states that the graph on [math] vertices maximizing [math] is the join of a clique and an independent set with [math] and [math] (also [math] and [math] if [math]) vertices, respectively. We resolve this conjecture for sufficiently large [math] using analytic methods. Our second result concerns the [math]-spread of a graph [math], which is defined as the difference between the largest eigenvalue and least eigenvalue of the signless Laplacian of [math]. It was conjectured by Cvetković, Rowlinson, and Simić [Publ. Inst. Math., 81 (2007), pp. 11–27] that the unique [math]-vertex connected graph of maximum [math]-spread is the graph formed by adding a pendant edge to [math]. We confirm this conjecture for sufficiently large [math].

Forcing large complete minors in infinite graphs

Abstract:It is well-known that in finite graphs, large complete minors/topological minors can be forced by assuming a large average degree. Our aim is to extend this fact to infinite graphs. For this, we generalise the notion of the relative end degree, which had been previously introduced by the first author for locally finite graphs, and show that large minimum relative degree at the ends and large minimum degree at the vertices imply the existence of large complete (topological) minors in infinite graphs with countably many ends.

Edge-connectivity between (edge-)ends of infinite graphs

Abstract:In infinite graph theory, the notion of ends, first introduced by Freudenthal and Jung for locally finite graphs, plays an important role when generalizing statements from finite graphs to infinite ones. Nash-Willian's Tree-Packing Theorem and MacLane's Planarity Criteria are examples of results that allow a topological approach, in which ends might be considered as endpoints of rays. In fact, there are extensive works in the literature showing that classical theorems of (vertex-)connectivity for finite graphs can be discussed regarding ends, in a more general context. However, aiming to generalize results of edge-connectivity, this paper recalls the definition of edge-ends in infinite graphs due to Hahn, Laviolette and Širáň. In terms of that object, we state an edge version of Menger's Theorem (following a previous work of Polat) and generalize the Lovász-Cherkassky Theorem for infinite graphs with edge-ends (inspired by a paper of Jacobs, Joó, Knappe, Kurkofka and Melcher).

Extremal results on degree powers in some classes of graphs

Abstract:Let $G$ be a simple graph of order $n$ with degree sequence $(d_1,d_2,\cdots,d_n)$. For an integer $p>1$, let $e_p(G)=\sum_{i=1}^n d^{p}_i$ and let $ex_p(n,H)$ be the maximum value of $e_p(G)$ among all graphs with $n$ vertices that do not contain $H$ as a subgraph (known as $H$-free graphs). Caro and Yuster proposed the problem of determining the exact value of $ex_2(n,C_4)$, where $C_4$ is the cycle of length $4$. In this paper, we show that if $G$ is a $C_4$-free graph having $n\geq 4$ vertices and $m\leq \lfloor 3(n-1)/2\rfloor$ edges and no isolated vertices, then $e_p(G)\leq e_p(F_n)$, with equality if and only if $G$ is the friendship graph $F_n$. This yields that for $n\geq 4$, $ex_p(n,\mathcal{C}^*)=e_p(F_n)$ and $F_n$ is the unique extremal graph, which is an improved complement of Caro and Yuster's result on $ex_p(n,\mathcal{C}^*)$, where $\mathcal{C}^*$ denotes the family of cycles of even lengths. We also determine the maximum value of $e_p(\cdot)$ among all minimally $t$-(edge)-connected graphs with small $t$ or among all $k$-degenerate graphs, and characterize the corresponding extremal graphs. A key tool in our approach is majorization.

Infinite graph product of groups I: Geometry of the extension graph

Abstract:We introduce the extension graph of graph product of groups and study its geometry. This enables us to study properties of graph product by exploiting large scale geometry of its defining graph. In particular, we show that the extension graph is isomorphic to the crossing graph of a canonical quasi-median graph and exhibits the same phenomenon about asymptotic dimension as quasi-trees of metric spaces studied by Bestvina-Bromberg-Fujiwara. As an application of the extension graph, we prove relative hyperbolicity of graph-wreath product. This provides a new construction of relatively hyperbolic groups.

A representation theorem for end spaces of infinite graphs

Abstract:End-spaces of infinite graphs naturally generalise the Freudenthal boundary and sit at the interface between graph theory, geometric group theory and topology. Our main result is that every end-space can topologically be represented by a special order tree. Our main proof ingredient is a structure theorem that we introduce, which carves out the order-tree-like structure of any graph in such a way that there is a natural bijection between the ends of the graph and the limit-type down-closed chains of the order-tree.

Abstract:Identifying graphs with extremal properties is an extensively studied topic in both topological graph theory and spectral graph theory. As observed in the literature, for many graph categories the extremal graphs with respect to some prescribed topological index or spectral invariant are the same. Therefore, it is an interesting problem to find a unified method to identify the extremal graphs for a set of topological or spectral invariants. Here we consider the majorization theorem to obtain extremal graphs in the class of trees, unicyclic graphs and bicyclic graphs with given order and fixed maximum degree, independence number, matching number, domination number, and/or number of pendant vertices, respectively.

Abstract:Let $G$ denote the infinite grid graph with vertex set $\{(a,b)\ : \, a,b \in \mathbb{Z}\}$ and edge set $\big \{ \{u,v\} : |u-v|=1 \;\text{or}\; |u-v| = \sqrt{2} \big \}.$ A question in landscape ecology, restated in graph theoretic terms, asks the following. What is the maximum number of edges in an induced subgraph of $G$ of order $n$? It was conjectured by Taliceo and Fleron that the maximum is $4n - \big \lceil \sqrt{28n-12} \, \big \rceil$. We prove the conjecture by formulating and solving a discrete version of the classical isoperimeteric problem.

Abstract:One of the central topics in extremal graph theory is the study of the function $ex(n,H)$, which represents the maximum number of edges a graph with $n$ vertices can have while avoiding a fixed graph $H$ as a subgraph. Tur{á}n provided a complete characterization for the case when $H$ is a complete graph on $r$ vertices. Erd{\H o}s, Stone, and Simonovits extended Tur{á}n's result to arbitrary graphs $H$ with $\chi(H) > 2$ (chromatic number greater than 2). However, determining the asymptotics of $ex(n, H)$ for bipartite graphs $H$ remains a widely open problem. A classical example of this is Zarankiewicz's problem, which asks for the asymptotics of $ex(n, K_{t,t})$. In this paper, we survey Zarankiewicz's problem, with a focus on graphs that arise from geometry. Incidence geometry, in particular, can be viewed as a manifestation of Zarankiewicz's problem in geometrically defined graphs.

Abstract:For a family of graphs $\mathcal{F}$, the Turán number $ex(n,\mathcal{F})$ is the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex graph containing no member of $\mathcal{F}$ as a subgraph. The maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex connected graph containing no member of $\mathcal{F}$ as a subgraph is denoted by $ex_{conn}(n,\mathcal{F})$. Let $P_k$ be the path on $k$ vertices and $H$ be a graph with chromatic number more than $2$. Katona and Xiao [Extremal graphs without long paths and large cliques, European J. Combin., 2023 103807] posed the following conjecture: Suppose that the chromatic number of $H$ is more than $2$. Then $ex\big(n,\{H,P_k\}\big)=n\max\big\{\big\lfloor \frac{k}{2}\big\rfloor-1,\frac{ex(k-1,H)}{k-1}\big\}+O_k(1)$. In this paper, we determine the exact value of $ex_{conn}\big(n,\{P_k,H\}\big)$ for sufficiently large $n$. Moreover, we obtain asymptotical result for $ex\big(n,\{P_k,H\}\big)$, which solves the conjecture proposed by Katona and Xiao.

A statistical physics approach is employed in which extremal properties are obtained through suitably defined rate equations. Abstract:In this paper we study the following extremal graph theoretic problem: Given an undirected Eulerian graph $G$, which Eulerian orientation minimizes or maximizes the number of arborescences? We solve the minimization for the complete graph $K_n$, the complete bipartite graph $K_{n,m}$, and for the so-called double graphs, where there are even number of edges between any pair of vertices. In fact, for $K_n$ we prove the following stronger statement. If $T$ is a tournament on $n$ vertices with out-degree sequence $d_1^+,\dots ,d^+_n$, then $$\mathrm{allarb}(T)\geq \frac{1}{n}\left(\prod_{k=1}^n(d^+_k+1)+\prod_{k=1}^nd^+_k\right),$$ where $\mathrm{allarb}(T)$ is the total number of arborescences. Equality holds if and only if $T$ is a locally transitive tournament. We also give an upper bound for the number of arborescences of an Eulerian orientation for an arbitrary graph $G$. This upper bound can be achieved on $K_n$ for infinitely many $n$.

Extremal problems for disjoint graphs

Abstract:For a simple graph $F$, let $\mathrm{EX}(n, F)$ and $\mathrm{EX_{sp}}(n,F)$ be the set of graphs with the maximum number of edges and the set of graphs with the maximum spectral radius in an $n$-vertex graph without any copy of the graph $F$, respectively. Let $F$ be a graph with $\mathrm{ex}(n,F)=e(T_{n,r})+O(1)$. In this paper, we show that $\mathrm{EX_{sp}}(n,kF)\subseteq \mathrm{EX}(n,kF)$ for sufficiently large $n$. This generalizes a result of Wang, Kang and Xue [J. Comb. Theory, Ser. B, 159(2023) 20-41]. We also determine the extremal graphs of $kF$ in term of the extremal graphs of $F$.

Three conjectures in extremal spectral graph theory

Abstract:We prove three conjectures regarding the maximization of spectral invariants over certain families of graphs. Our most difficult result is that the join of $P_2$ and $P_{n-2}$ is the unique graph of maximum spectral radius over all planar graphs. This was conjectured by Boots and Royle in 1991 and independently by Cao and Vince in 1993. Similarly, we prove a conjecture of Cvetković and Rowlinson from 1990 stating that the unique outerplanar graph of maximum spectral radius is the join of a vertex and $P_{n-1}$. Finally, we prove a conjecture of Aouchiche et al from 2008 stating that a pineapple graph is the unique connected graph maximizing the spectral radius minus the average degree. To prove our theorems, we use the leading eigenvector of a purported extremal graph to deduce structural properties about that graph. Using this setup, we give short proofs of several old results: Mantel's Theorem, Stanley's edge bound and extensions, the Kővari-Sós-Turán Theorem applied to $\mathrm{ex}\left(n, K_{2,t}\right)$, and a partial solution to an old problem of Erdős on making a triangle-free graph bipartite.

A survey on spectral conditions for some extremal graph problems

Abstract:This survey is two-fold. We first report new progress on the spectral extremal results on the Turán type problems in graph theory. More precisely, we shall summarize the spectral Turán function in terms of the adjacency spectral radius and the signless Laplacian spectral radius for various graphs. For instance, the complete graphs, general graphs with chromatic number at least three, complete bipartite graphs, odd cycles, even cycles, color-critical graphs and intersecting triangles. The second goal is to conclude some recent results of the spectral conditions on some graphical properties. By a unified method, we present some sufficient conditions based on the adjacency spectral radius and the signless Laplacian spectral radius for a graph to be Hamiltonian, $k$-Hamiltonian, $k$-edge-Hamiltonian, traceable, $k$-path-coverable, $k$-connected, $k$-edge-connected, Hamilton-connected, perfect matching and $\beta$-deficient.

A general theorem in spectral extremal graph theory

Abstract:The extremal graphs $\mathrm{EX}(n,\mathcal F)$ and spectral extremal graphs $\mathrm{SPEX}(n,\mathcal F)$ are the sets of graphs on $n$ vertices with maximum number of edges and maximum spectral radius, respectively, with no subgraph in $\mathcal F$. We prove a general theorem which allows us to characterize the spectral extremal graphs for a wide range of forbidden families $\mathcal F$ and implies several new and existing results. In particular, whenever $\mathrm{EX}(n,\mathcal F)$ contains the complete bipartite graph $K_{k,n-k}$ (or certain similar graphs) then $\mathrm{SPEX}(n,\mathcal F)$ contains the same graph when $n$ is sufficiently large. We prove a similar theorem which relates $\mathrm{SPEX}(n,\mathcal F)$ and $\mathrm{SPEX}_\alpha(n,\mathcal F)$, the set of $\mathcal F$-free graphs which maximize the spectral radius of the matrix $A_\alpha=\alpha D+(1-\alpha)A$, where $A$ is the adjacency matrix and $D$ is the diagonal degree matrix.

Abstract:The sum of the absolute values of the eigenvalues of a graph is called the energy of the graph. We study the problem of finding graphs with extremal energy within specified classes of graphs. We develop tools for treating such problems and obtain some partial results. Using calculus, we show that an extremal graph ``should'' have a small number of distinct eigenvalues. However, we also present data that shows in many cases that extremal graphs can have a large number of distinct eigenvalues.
