Abstract:Tropospheric ozone (O3) is a harmful gas compound to humans and vegetation, and it also serves as a climate change forcer. O3 is formed in the reactions of nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) with light. In this study, an O3 pollution episode encountered in Shenzhen, South China in 2018 was investigated to illustrate the influence of aerosols on local O3 production. We used a box model with comprehensive heterogeneous mechanisms and empirical prediction of photolysis rates to reproduce the O3 episode. Results demonstrate that the aerosol light extinction and NO2 heterogeneous reactions showed comparable influence but opposite signs on the O3 production. Hence, the influence of aerosols from different processes is largely counteracted. Sensitivity tests suggest that O3 production increases with further reduction in aerosols in this study, while the continued NOx reduction finally shifts O3 production to an NOx-limited regime with respect to traditional O3-NOx-VOC sensitivity. Our results shed light on the role of NOx reduction on O3 production and highlight further mitigation in NOx not only limiting the production of O3 but also helping to ease particulate nitrate, as a path for cocontrol of O3 and fine particle pollution.

Abstract:Previous studies have shown that heavy aerosol pollution can inhibit the surface ozone generation. More recent studies, however, have revealed that aerosol loading is positively correlated with ozone concentrations in large cities, such as Shanghai, particularly during the summer. Whether the correlation between aerosol pollution and ozone concentrations is positive or negative, it is an issue that needs to be considered by atmospheric scientists. Although the presence of ozone precursors, such as nitrogen oxide (NOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), affect ozone concentrations, the roles of aerosols in the formation of ozone have rarely been investigated. Therefore, an analysis of the effect of aerosols on photochemical ozone generation via a study of the interaction of ozone and its precursors is important. In our research, we found that both aerosol and ozone concentrations were higher in Shanghai under polluted conditions than they were under clean conditions during the summer, but the ozone formation was controlled by VOCs, not by aerosol loading. The decrease in the AOD (SSA) increased (decreased) the surface UV radiation and promoted (inhibited) photochemical ozone production. We also found that the lower the concentration of photochemically active VOCs, the weaker the effect of the AOD on the ozone concentrations. The other results were shown as follows: (1) Aerosol pollution decreased the amount of UV radiation reaching the Earth's surface, but the surface UV radiation increased with increasing aerosol particle scattering; (2) Aerosol pollution inhibited the photolysis of nitrogen dioxide (NO2), while the scattering property of aerosols facilitated this phenomenon; (3) When both the concentration of ozone precursors and the SSA were constant, the ozone concentration decreased, but the attenuation rate increased significantly with an increase in AOD.
Impacts of Aerosols on Surface-Layer Ozone Concentrations in China Through Heterogeneous Reactions and Changes in Photolysis Rates

Abstract:We quantify the impacts of aerosols on distributions and concentrations of O-3 over China through heterogeneous reactions and changes in photolysis rates using the global chemical transport model GEOS-Chem. Aerosols considered include sulfate, nitrate, ammonium, organic carbon, and black carbon. Consideration of the impacts of aerosols improves the simulated O-3 concentrations in China; the averaged biases in simulated O-3 concentrations in China are +9% and +33% with and without the impacts of aerosols, respectively. The impacts of heterogeneous reactions on O-3 are simulated to exhibit large spatial and temporal variations, and those of aerosols through altering photolysis rates are simulated to be small. Accounting for hydrolysis of N2O5, irreversible absorption of NO2 and NO3 on wet aerosols, and the uptake of HO2 by aerosols, O-3 concentrations are simulated to decrease by 8-12 ppbv in northern China and to increase by 3-6 ppbv in southern China in winter, and reductions in O-3 of exceeding 6 ppbv are simulated in a large fraction of China in other seasons. With the assumed uptake coefficients in this work, the hydrolysis of N2O5 is simulated to have a dominant role in reducing O-3 concentrations all over China, as a result of the large reductions in NO in the lower to middle troposphere in the northern midlatitudes. On the contrary, the absorption of NO2 and NO3 is found to increase O-3 concentrations by 3 10 ppbv in eastern China in winter because of the increases in chemical production of O-3 in the VOC-limited regions. The impact of aerosols on O-3 concentration through heterogeneous reactions is characterized in this work by the ratio of change in O-3 concentration to local PM2.5 level (ROP = [PM2.5]). The locations of maximum reductions in O-3 are not necessarily the places of maximum aerosol concentrations; the annual mean values of ROP are calculated to be -0.14, -0.17, -0.27, and -0.16 ppbv (mu g m(-3))(-1) over the heavily polluted regions of Beijing-Tianjin-Tanggu, Yangtze River Delta, Pearl River Delta, and Sichuan Basin, respectively. Ozone Formation under Low Solar Radiation in Eastern China

Abstract:Abstract. PM2.5, a particulate matter with a diameter of 2.5 micrometers or less, is one of the major components of the air pollution in eastern China. In the past few years, China's government made strong efforts to reduce the PM2.5 pollutions. However, another important pollutant (ozone) becomes an important problem in eastern China. Ozone (O3) is produced by photochemistry, which requires solar radiation for the formation of O3. Under heavy PM2.5 pollution, the solar radiation is often depressed, and the photochemical production of O3 is prohibited. This study shows that during fall in eastern China, under heavy PM2.5 pollutions, there were often strong O3 photochemical productions, causing a co-occurrence of high PM2.5 and O3 concentrations. This co-occurrence of high PM2.5 and O3 is un-usual and is the main focus of this study. Recent measurements show that there were often high HONO surface concentrations in major Chinese mega cities, especially during daytime, with maximum concentrations ranging from 0.5 to 2 ppbv. It is also interesting to note that the high HONO concentrations were occurred during high aerosol concentration periods, suggesting that there were additional HONO surface sources in eastern China. Under the high daytime HONO concentrations, HONO can be photo-dissociated to be OH radicals, which enhance the photochemical production of O3. In order to study the above scientific issues, a radiative transfer model (TUV; Tropospheric Ultraviolet-Visible) is used in this study, and a chemical steady state model is established to calculate OH radical concentrations. The calculations show that by including the OH production of the photo-dissociated of HONO, the calculated OH concentrations are significantly higher than the values without including this production. For example, by including HONO production, the maximum of OH concentration under the high aerosol condition (AOD = 2.5) is similar to the value under low aerosol condition (AOD = 0.25) in the no-HONO case. This result suggests that even under the high aerosol condition, the chemical oxidizing process for O3 production can occurred, which explain the co-occurrence of high PM2.5 and high O3 in fall season in eastern China. However, the O3 concentrations were not significantly affected by the appearance of HONO in winter. This study shows that the seasonal variation of solar radiation plays important roles for controlling the OH production in winter. When the solar radiation is in a very low level in winter, it reaches the threshold level to prevent the OH chemical production, even by including the HONO production of OH. This study provides some important scientific highlights to better understand the O3 pollutions in eastern China.

Which aerosol type dominate the impact of aerosols on ozone via changing photolysis rates?

Abstract:The impact of aerosols on ozone via influencing photolysis rates is a combined effect of absorbing aerosols (AA) and scattering aerosols (SA). However, AA and SA show different optical properties and influence photolysis rates differently, which then cause different impacts on ozone. Till now, the dominate factor is disconfirmed, which is largely due to the impact of SA on ozone not reaching to a consistent conclusion. In this study, the WRF-Chem model was implemented to simulate the air pollutants over the North China Plain (NCP). The impacts of AA and SA on ozone via influencing photolysis rates were quantitatively isolated and analyzed. Our results also demonstrated the decreasing effect of AA on ozone within planet boundary layer (PBL) which is consistent with the conclusions of previous studies. But for SA, it decreased the ozone chemical contribution (CHEM) near surface but increased which in the upper layers of PBL, that enlarge the ozone vertical gradients. In this case, more vertical exchanges of ozone would occur with the effect of vertical mixing motion of atmosphere, then the opposite CHEM variations were counteracted with each other and finally led to very slight changes in ozone within PBL. Thus, it can be summarized that AA dominate this impact of aerosols on ozone. Reducing AA could cause a general increase in ozone (ΔO 3 ) over the NCP. Based on the aerosol levels of this case, ΔO 3 would be seen over 86 % of the areas in the NCP when reducing AA by 3/4 and ΔO 3 was more significant in the megacities. Our study highlights the different relationships between ozone and aerosol types, which suggests that more attentions should be paid on aerosol types, especially AA, when making the synergetic control strategy of aerosols and ozone in China.

Abstract:In China, a significant reduction in primary pollution has been observed due to the Clean Air Action since 2013, and ozone pollution has become increasingly prominent over the past years. Pearl River Delta (PRD) is one of the most successful regions concerning primary pollution control, while is suffering from severe ozone pollution during autumn. In this study, we present a field campaign in Shenzhen, a megacity in PRD, in October 2018 with measurements of ozone and photochemical precursors. These observational data are helpful to analyze the local ozone budget and its sensitivity to precursors with the help of an observation-based model (RACM2-LIM1). The observed ozone concentration was up to 121 ppbv during a photochemical episode from 1 to 8 October, when intensive ozone formation up to tens of ppbv/h was found. Ozone vertical measurement indicates the fast ozone production is happening throughout the planetary boundary layer (PBL), which is an important source of morning ozone increase resulting in ozone pollution. An explicit case study is performed to reveal the diurnal feature of instantaneous ozone production rate (P(Ox)) and accumulative P(Ox) based on the O3-NOx-VOC sensitivity, ROx radical primary production rate (P (ROx)), and LN/Q for three cases including ozone pollution and attainment periods. Results show that nitrogen oxides (NOx = NO + NO2) reduction have positive and negative impact on local ozone production from one pollution episode to the other, which indicates the complexity of O3-precursors sensitivity and difficulty to control ozone pollution in Shenzhen. Finally, comparison among measurements in other campaigns provides additional evidence on local ozone production sensitivity on NOx and anthropogenic volatile organic compounds (AVOCs) with respect to a temporal and spatial change. The NOx reduction in Shenzhen has led to higher ozone production from 2015 to 2018 given the nearly constant VOC. However, the ozone mitigation would be benefit from further NOx reduction in the conditions of 2018.
Aerosol Effects on Ozone Concentrations in Beijing: a Model Sensitivity Study.

Abstract:Most previous O-3 simulations were based only on gaseous phase photochemistry. However, some aerosol-related processes, namely, heterogeneous reactions occurring on the aerosol surface and photolysis rate alternated by aerosol radiative influence, may affect O-3 photochemistry under high aerosol loads. A three-dimensional air quality model, Models-3/Community Multi-scale Air Quality-Model of Aerosol Dynamics, Reaction, Ionization, and Dissolution, was employed to simulate the effects of the above-mentioned processes on O-3 formation under typical high O-3 episodes in Beijing during summer. Five heterogeneous reactions, i.e., NO2, NO3, N2O5, HO2, and O-3, were individually investigated to elucidate their effects on O-3 formation. The results showed that the heterogeneous reactions significantly affected O-3 formation in the urban plume. NO2 heterogeneous reaction increased O-3 to 90 ppb, while HO2 heterogeneous reaction decreased O-3 to 33 ppb. In addition, O-3 heterogeneous loss decreased O-3 to 31 ppb. The effects of NO2, NO3, and N2O5 heterogeneous reactions showed opposite O-3 concentration changes between the urban and extra-urban areas because of the response of the reactions to the two types of O-3 formation regimes. When the aerosol radiative influence was included, the photolysis rate decreased and O-3 decreased significantly to 73 ppb O-3. The two aerosol-related processes should be considered in the study of O-3 formation because high aerosol concentration is a ubiquitous phenomenon that affects the urban- and regional air quality in China.

Abstract:During the COVID-19 lockdown, atmospheric PM2.5 in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) showed the highest reduction in China, but the reasons, being a critical question for future air quality policy design, are not yet clear. In this study, we analyzed the relationships among gaseous precursors, secondary aerosols and atmospheric oxidation capacity in Shenzhen, a megacity in the PRD, during the lockdown period in 2020 and the same period in 2021. The comprehensive observational datasets showed large lockdown declines in all primary and secondary pollutants (including O3). We found that, however, the daytime concentrations of secondary aerosols during the lockdown period and normal period were rather similar when the corresponding odd oxygen (Ox≡O3+NO2, an indicator of photochemical processing avoiding the titration effect of O3 by freshly emitted NO) were at similar levels. Therefore, reduced Ox, rather than the large reduction in precursors, was a direct driver to achieve the decline in secondary aerosols. Moreover, Ox was also found to determine the spatial distribution of intercity PM2.5 levels in winter PRD. Thus, an effective strategy for winter PM2.5 mitigation should emphasize on control of winter O3 formation in the PRD and other regions with similar conditions.

Abstract:Interactions between aerosols and gases in the atmosphere have been the focus of an increasing number of studies in recent years. Here, we focus on aerosol effects on tropospheric ozone that involve meteorological feedbacks induced by aerosol–radiation interactions. Specifically, we study the effects that involve aerosol influences on the transport of gaseous pollutants and on atmospheric moisture, both of which can impact ozone chemistry. For this purpose, we use the UK Earth System Model (UKESM1), with which we performed sensitivity simulations including and excluding the aerosol direct radiative effect (ADE) on atmospheric chemistry, and focused our analysis on an area with a high aerosol presence, namely China. By comparing the simulations, we found that ADE reduced shortwave radiation by 11 % in China and consequently led to lower turbulent kinetic energy, weaker horizontal winds and a shallower boundary layer (with a maximum of 102.28 m reduction in north China). On the one hand, the suppressed boundary layer limited the export and diffusion of pollutants and increased the concentration of CO, SO2, NO, NO2, PM2.5 and PM10 in the aerosol-rich regions. The NO/NO2 ratio generally increased and led to more ozone depletion. On the other hand, the boundary layer top acted as a barrier that trapped moisture at lower altitudes and reduced the moisture at higher altitudes (the specific humidity was reduced by 1.69 % at 1493 m on average in China). Due to reduced water vapour, fewer clouds were formed and more sunlight reached the surface, so the photolytical production of ozone increased. Under the combined effect of the two meteorology feedback methods, the annual average ozone concentration in China declined by 2.01 ppb (6.2 %), which was found to bring the model into closer agreement with surface ozone measurements from different parts of China.

Abstract:Regional ozone pollution has become one of the most challenging problems in China, especially in the more economically developed and densely populated regions like Hangzhou. In this study, measurements of O3, CO, NOx and non-methane hydrocarbons (NMHCs), together with meteorological data, were obtained for the period July 1, 2013–August 15, 2013 at three sites in Hangzhou. These sites included an urban site (Zhaohui “ZH”), a suburban site (Xiasha “XS”) and a rural site (Qiandaohu “QDH”). During the observation period, both ZH and XS had a higher ozone level than QDH, with exceeding rates of 41.3% and 47.8%, respectively. Elevated O3 levels in QDH were found at night, which could be explained by less prominent NO titration effect in rural area. Detailed statistical analysis of meteorological and chemical impacts on ozone formation was carried out for ZH, and higher ozone concentration was observed when the wind direction was from the east. This is possibly due to emissions of VOCs from XS, a typical chemical industrial park located in 30km upwind area of ZH. A comprehensive comparison between three ozone episode periods and one non-episode period were made in ZH. It was concluded that elevated concentrations of precursors and temperatures, low relative humidity and wind speed and easterly-dominated wind direction contribute to urban ozone episodes in Hangzhou. VOCs reactivity analysis indicated that reactive alkenes like isoprene and isobutene contributed most to ozone formation. Three methods were applied to evaluate O3-VOCs-NOx sensitivity in ZH: VOCs/NOx ratio method, Smog Production Model (SPM) and Relative Incremental Reactivity (RIR). The results show that summer ozone in urban Hangzhou mostly presents VOCs-limited and transition region alternately. Our study implies that the increasing automobiles and VOCs emissions from upwind area could result in ozone pollution in urban Hangzhou, and synergistic reduction of VOCs and NOx will be more effective.
Quantitative Evaluation of Major Factors Influencing Atmospheric Ozone Pollution in a Chinese Megacity

Abstract:In recent years, the concentration of ozone (O3) in typical urban agglomerations in China has generally increased. This study carried out three years of observations in the active photochemical reaction period (August-November) in Shenzhen, a typical city in the Pearl River Delta. Principal coordinate analysis (PCoA) was first applied to identify the major factors influencing daily maximum 8-h average O3 concentration (MDA8-O3) concentration. Then, the MDA8-O3 concentration fitting equation was established by a stepwise multiple linear regression (MLR). Sensitivity tests based on fitting equations showed that temperature (+35.8%), photolysis rate of j[NO2] (+11.1%), relative humidity (-10.4%) and photolysis rate of j[O1D] (-9.5%) had a greater effect on the concentration of MDA8-O3 with per factor perturbation (25% change), while increments of CO (6.9%) and NO2 (2.7%) had less effect. The insignificant promotion effect produced by the NO2 concentration was consistent with Shenzhen being in a transition area for O3-VOCs-NOx sensitivity. In addition, the opposite effects produced by j[NO2] and j[O1D] suggests a complex role of solar radiation in ozone pollution in this region. The method established here is based on simple parameters and can be easily applied in other regions to diagnose the major factors influencing ozone pollution.

Abstract:Ozone (O3) pollution with excessive near-surface O3 levels has been an important environmental issue in China, although the anthropogenic emission reductions (AER) have improved air quality since 2013. In this study, we investigated the sensitivities of atmospheric chemical environment with the urban and rural changes to the AER targeting a typical O3 pollution episode over North China in summer 2019, by conducting two WRF-Chem simulation experiments under two scenarios of anthropogenic emission inventories of years 2012 and 2019 with the meteorological conditions in the 2019 summertime O3 pollution episode for excluding the meteorological impacts on O3 pollution. The results show that the unbalanced AER aroused more serious O3 pollution in urban and rural areas. The intense NO reduction was responsible for the significant increments of urban O3, while the falling NO2 and NO synergistically devoted to the slight O3 variations in rural areas. Induced by the recent-year AER, the urban O3 production was governed by VOCs-limited and transition regime, whereas the NOx-limited regime dominated over rural areas in North China. Also, the AER reinforced the atmospheric oxidation capacity with the elevations of atmospheric oxidants O3 and ROx radicals, strengthening the chemical conversions to secondary inorganic particles. In both urban and rural areas, the sharp drop in SO2 caused a decrease in sulfate fraction, while the enhanced AOC accelerated the transformation to nitrate even when NOx was reduced. The AER induced nitrate to occupy the principal position in secondary PM2.5 in urban and rural areas. The AER promoted daytime and suppressed nighttime the nitrate production in urban areas, and more vigorous conversion of secondary aerosols were found in rural areas with much lower AOC increments. This study provides insights from a case study over North China in distinct responses of urban and rural O3 pollution with secondary particle changes to AER in urban and rural atmospheric environment changes, with implications for an effective abatement strategy on O3 pollution.
The Impact of Aerosols on Photolysis Frequencies and Ozone Production in Beijing During the 4-Year Period 2012–2015

Abstract:Abstract. During the period 2012–2015, photolysis frequencies were measured at the Peking University site (PKUERS), a site representative of Beijing. We present a study of the effects of aerosols on two key photolysis frequencies, j(O1D) and j(NO2). Both j(O1D) and j(NO2) display significant dependence on aerosol optical depth (AOD; 380 nm) with a non-linear negative correlation. With the increase in AOD, the slopes of photolysis frequencies vs. AOD decrease, which indicates that the capacity of aerosols to reduce the actinic flux decreases with AOD. The absolute values of slopes are equal to 4.2–6.9×10-6 and 3.4×10-3 s−1 per AOD unit for j(O1D) and j(NO2) respectively at a solar zenith angle (SZA) of 60∘ and AOD smaller than 0.7, both of which are larger than those observed in a similar, previous study in the Mediterranean. This indicates that the aerosols in Beijing have a stronger extinction effect on actinic flux than absorptive dust aerosols in the Mediterranean. Since the photolysis frequencies strongly depended on the AOD and the SZA, we established a parametric equation to quantitatively evaluate the effect of aerosols on photolysis frequencies in Beijing. According to the parametric equation, aerosols lead to a decrease in seasonal mean j(NO2) by 24 % and 30 % for summer and winter, respectively, and a corresponding decrease in seasonal mean j(O1D) by 27 % and 33 %, respectively, compared to an aerosol-free atmosphere (AOD =0). Based on an observation campaign in August 2012, we used a photochemical box model to simulate the ozone production rate (P(O3)). The simulation results shows that the monthly mean daytime net ozone production rate is reduced by up to 25 % due to the light extinction of aerosols. Through further in-depth analysis, it was found that particulate matter concentrations maintain a high level under the condition of high concentrations of ozone precursors (volatile organic compounds, VOCs, and NOx), which inhibits the production of ozone to a large extent. This phenomenon implies a negative feedback mechanism in the atmospheric environment of Beijing.
Impact of Aerosol-Radiation Interaction and Heterogeneous Chemistry on the Winter Decreasing PM 2.5 and Increasing O 3 in Eastern China 2014-2020

Abstract:In the context of the prevalent winter air quality issues in China marked by declining PM 2.5 and rising O 3 , this study employed a modified WRF-Chem model to examine the aerosol radiation interaction (ARI), heterogeneous chemistry (AHC), and their combined impact (ALL) on the variations in O 3 and PM 2.5 during the 2014-2020 in eastern China. Our analysis confirmed that ARI curtailed O 3 while elevating PM 2.5 . AHC reduced O 3 through heterogeneous absorption of NO x and hydroxides while notably fostering fine-grained sulfate, resulting in a PM 2.5 increase. Emission reductions mitigated the inhibitory impact of ARI on meteorological fields and photolysis rates. Emission reduction individually without aerosol feedback led to a 5.43 ppb O 3 increase and a 22.89 pg/m 3 PM 2.5 decrease. ARI and AHC amplified the emission -reduction -induced (ERI) O 3 rise by 1.83 and 0.31 ppb, respectively. The response of ARI to emission diminution brought about a modest PM 2.5 increase of 0.31 pg/m 3 . Conversely, AHC, acting as the primary contributor, caused a noteworthy PM 2.5 decrease of 4.60 pg/m 3 . As efforts concentrate on reducing PM 25 , the promotion of ARI on PM 2.5 counterbalanced the efficacy of emission reduction and the AHC-induced strengthening of PM 2.5 decrease. The ALL magnified the ERI O 3 increase by 38.9% and PM 2.5 decrease by 18.7%. Sensitivity experiments with different degrees of emission reduction demonstrated a consistent linear relationship between the ALL -induced enhancement of O 3 increase and PM 2.5 decrease to the ERI PM 2.5 decline. Our investigation revealed the complex connection between emissions and aerosol feedback in influencing air quality. The Impact of Organic Nitrates on Summer Ozone Formation in Shanghai, China

Abstract:Abstract. Organic nitrates serve as important secondary oxidation products in the atmosphere, playing a crucial role in the atmospheric radical cycles and influencing the production of secondary pollutants (ozone (O3) and secondary organic aerosols). However, field measurements of organic nitrates are scarce in China, and a comprehensive localized mechanism for organic nitrates is absent, hindering effective pollution mitigation strategies. In this study, we conducted measurements of ambient gaseous organic nitrates and examined their effects on local O3 production at a polluted urban site in eastern China during summer. The average daytime concentrations of alkyl nitrates (ANs) and peroxy nitrates (PNs) throughout the campaign were 0.5±0.3 ppbv and 0.9±0.7 ppbv, respectively, with peaks reaching up to 1.6 ppbv and 3.6 ppbv. An observation-constrained box model, incorporating an updated mechanism for organic nitrates, was employed to assess the environmental impact of these compounds. The model results indicated that PNs production inhibited the daytime O3 production by 16 % (0.8 ppbv/h), which is relatively low compared to previous studies. Furthermore, scenario analyses revealed that production yields (α) of ANs would alter the response of O3 formation to precursors due to varying compositions of volatile organic compounds. Our results suggest that blind pollution control may cause ineffective pollution prevention and highlight the necessity of a thorough understanding on organic nitrate chemistry for local O3 control strategy.
Composition and Reactivity of Volatile Organic Compounds and the Implications for Ozone Formation in the North China Plain

Abstract:Enhanced ozone (O3) pollution has emerged as a pressing environmental concern in China, particularly for densely populated megacities and major city clusters. However, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), the key precursors to O3 formation, have not been routinely measured. In this study, we characterize the spatial and temporal patterns of VOCs and examine the role of VOCs in O3 production in five cities (Dongying (DY), Rizhao (RZ), Yantai (YT), Weihai (WH), and Jinan (JN)) in the North China Plain (NCP) for two sampling periods (June and December) in 2021 through continuous field observations. Among various VOC categories, alkanes accounted for the largest proportion of VOCs in the cities. For VOCs, chemical reactivities, aromatic hydrocarbons, and alkenes were dominant contributors to O3 formation potential (OFP). Unlike inland regions, the contribution to OFP from OVOCs increased greatly at high O3 concentrations in coastal regions (especially YT). Model simulations during the O3 episode show that the net O3 production rates were 27.87, 10.24, and 10.37 ppbv/h in DY, RZ, and JN. The pathway of HO2 + NO contributed the most to O3 production in JN and RZ, while RO2 + NO was the largest contributor to O3 production in DY. The relative incremental reactivity (RIR) revealed that O3 formation in DY was the transitional regime, while it was markedly the VOC-limited regime in JN and RZ. The O3 production response is influenced by NOx concentration and has a clear daily variation pattern (the sensitivity is greater from 15:00 to 17:00). The most efficiencies in O3 reduction could be achieved by reducing NOx when the NOx concentration is low (less than 20 ppbv in this study). This study reveals the importance of ambient VOCs in O3 production over the NCP and demonstrates that a better grasp of VOC sources and profiles is critical for in-depth O3 regulation in the NCP.

Abstract:Particulate matter with diameters of 2.5 μm or smaller (PM2.5) and ozone (O3) are major pollutants in the urban atmosphere. PM2.5 can affect O3 by altering the photolysis rate and heterogeneous reactions. However, these two processes and their relative importance remain uncertain. In this paper, with Nanjing in China as the target city, we investigate the characteristics and mechanism of interactions between particles and O3 based on ground observations and numerical modeling. In 2008, the average concentrations of PM2.5 and O3 at Caochangmen station are 64.6±47.4 μg m−3 and 24.6±22.8 ppb, respectively, while at Pukou station they are 94.1 ± 63.4 μg m−3 and 16.9 ± 14.9 ppb. The correlation coefficient between PM2.5 and O3 is −0.46. In order to understand the reaction between PM2.5 and O3, we construct a box model, in which an aerosol optical property model, ultraviolet radiation model, gas phase chemistry model, and heterogeneous chemistry model, are coupled. The model is employed to investigate the relative contribution of the aforementioned two processes, which vary under different particle concentrations, scattering capability and VOCs/NOx ratios (VOCs: volatile organic compounds; NOx: nitric oxide and nitrogen dioxide). Generally, photolysis rate effect can cause a greater O3 reduction when the particle concentrations are higher, while heterogeneous reactions dominate O3 reduction with low-level particle concentrations. Moreover, in typical VOC-sensitive regions, O3 can even be increased by heterogeneous reactions. In Nanjing, both processes lead to O3 reduction, and photolysis rate effect is dominant. Our study underscores the importance of photolysis rate effect and heterogeneous reactions for O3, and such interaction processes should be fully considered in future atmospheric chemistry modeling.
The Variation in Chemical Composition and Source Apportionment of PM2.5 before, during, and after COVID-19 Restrictions in Zhengzhou, China

Abstract:Despite significant improvements in air quality during and after COVID-19 restrictions, haze continued to occur in Zhengzhou afterwards. This paper compares ionic compositions and sources of PM2.5 before (2019), during (2020), and after (2021) the restrictions to explore the reasons for the haze. The average concentration of PM2.5 decreased by 28.5% in 2020 and 27.9% in 2021, respectively, from 102.49 μg m−3 in 2019. The concentration of secondary inorganic aerosols (SIAs) was 51.87 μg m−3 in 2019, which decreased by 3.1% in 2020 and 12.8% in 2021. In contrast, the contributions of SIAs to PM2.5 increased from 50.61% (2019) to 68.6% (2020) and 61.2% (2021). SIAs contributed significantly to PM2.5 levels in 2020–2021. Despite a 22~62% decline in NOx levels in 2020–2021, the increased O3 caused a similar NO3− concentration (20.69~23.00 μg m−3) in 2020–2021 to that (22.93 μg m−3) in 2019, hindering PM2.5 reduction in Zhengzhou. Six PM2.5 sources, including secondary inorganic aerosols, industrial emissions, coal combustion, biomass burning, soil dust, and traffic emissions, were identified by the positive matrix factorization model in 2019–2021. Compared to 2019, the reduction in PM2.5 from the secondary aerosol source in 2020 and 2021 was small, and the contribution of secondary aerosol to PM2.5 increased by 13.32% in 2020 and 12.94% in 2021. In comparison, the primary emissions, including biomass burning, traffic, and dust, were reduced by 29.71% in 2020 and 27.7% in 2021. The results indicated that the secondary production did not significantly contribute to the PM2.5 decrease during and after the COVID-19 restrictions. Therefore, it is essential to understand the formation of secondary aerosols under high O3 and low precursor gases to mitigate air pollution in the future.

Abstract:The strict emission control measures have profoundly changed the air pollution in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) region, China. However, the impacts of decreasing fine particulates (PM 2.5 ) and nitrogen oxide (NOx) on summer ozone (O 3 ) formation still remain disputable. We perform simulations in the 2018 summer over the YRD using the WRF-Chem model that considers the aerosol radiative forcing (ARF) and HO 2 heterogeneous loss on aerosol surface. The model reasonably reproduces the measured spatiotemporal surface O 3 and PM 2.5 concentrations and aerosol compositions. Model sensitivity experiments show that the NOx mitigation during recent years changes daytime O 3 formation in summer from the transition regime to the NOx-sensitive regime in the YRD. The decreasing NOx emission generally weakens O 3 formation and lowers ambient O 3 levels in summer during recent years, except for some urban centers of megacities. While, the haze alleviation characterized by a decline in ambient PM 2.5 concentration in the past years largely counteracts the daytime O 3 decrease caused by NOx mitigation, largely contributing to the persistently high levels of summertime O 3 . The counteracting effect is dominantly attributed to the attenuated ARF and minorly contributed by the suppressed HO 2 uptake and heterogeneous loss on aerosol surface. These results highlight that the repeated O 3 pollution in the YRD is closely associated with NOx and haze alleviation and more efforts must be taken to achieve lower O 3 levels.
