Abstract:Here we present a dataset of carbon‐related proxy for the Shiyang River Basin, which involves profile sediment, surface sediment, and groundwater samples, including age, TOC, TN, C/N, IC, δ13Corg, δ13Ccarb, and δ18O indicators. We have learned that the terminal lakes in the Shiyang River Basin have generated important inorganic carbon sinks and some organic carbon sinks. These data will play an important role in studying organic and inorganic carbon sinks, carbon cycling processes, and environmental changes in the closed basin. Closed basin accounts for about one‐fifth of the global land area and is an important part of the global terrestrial carbon cycle. Due to its relatively close geographical environment and independent carbon cycling system, it is an ideal place to study regional carbon cycling. Here we present a carbon‐related proxy dataset for the Shiyang River Basin in the eastern part of the Hexi Corridor. The dataset collected carbon‐related indicator data for 997 sediment samples from 14 profiles, 92 surface sediment samples and 25 groundwater samples. It includes total nitrogen (TN), total organic carbon (TOC), inorganic carbon (IC), carbon‐nitrogen ratio (C/N), organic carbon isotopes (δ13Corg), carbonate carbon isotopes (δ13Ccarb), oxygen isotopes (δ18O) and other proxy indicator data, as well as profile and groundwater age data. These data will play an important role in studying organic carbon sinks, inorganic carbon sinks, carbon cycling processes and environmental changes in the closed basin. Abstract:Based on similar to 150-year of sedimentary records, we identify that autochthonous carbonate deposition in Lake Wuliangsu, in the upper reaches of the Yellow River, was independent of both hydrological and ecological variations before 1965, influenced by hydrological changes due to agricultural activities during 1965-1990, and slightly impacted by higher productivity under the eutrophication process after 1990. By comparing with data from lakes across the globe, we find that lake size and lake stratification control the contribution of recycled organic carbon to autochthonous carbonate deposition. Continuous mixing and aeration in shallow lakes facilitate the transformation of organic carbon into 29-45% of sedimentary carbonate, different from large and deep lakes (2-25%). Organic carbon recycling in lakes remains generally stable or decreases under the pressure of lake eutrophication, requiring further investigations on whether more organic carbon will be buried in the carbonate form.

Abstract:Carbonate mineral weathering coupled with aquatic photosynthesis, herein termed 'coupled carbonate weathering' (CCW), represents a significant carbon sink which is determined by riverine hydrochemical variations. The magnitudes, variations and mechanisms responsible for the carbon sink produced by CCW are still unclear. In this study, major ions, TOC and discharge data at the Darongjiang, Lingqu, Guilin and Yangshuo hydrologic stations in Li River basin, a karst catchment typical of this geographic region, were analysed from January 2012 to December 2015 to elucidate the temporal variations in riverine inorganic and organic carbon and their controlling mechanisms. The results show that (1) HCO3− was sourced from carbonate weathering and silicate weathering, carbonate weathering by carbonic acid being predominant; (2) TOC was created chiefly by the transformation of bicarbonate to organic carbon by aquatic phototrophs during the non-flood period; (3) The carbon sink produced by coupled carbonate weathering in the Li River basin was calculated to be 14.41 tC·km−2·yr−1, comprised of the sink attributable to carbonate weathering (12.17 tC·km−2·yr−1) and sink due to the "biological carbon pump" (SBCP) (2.24 tC·km−2·yr−1). The SBCP thus accounted for approximately 15.54% of the total carbon sink, indicating that the proportion of riverine TOC sourced by the transformation from bicarbonate to organic carbon by aquatic phototrophs may be high and must be considered in the estimation of carbonate weathering-related carbon sinks elsewhere.

Abstract:Arid and semi-arid ecosystems are increasingly recognized as important carbon storage sites. In these regions, extensive sequestration of dissolved inorganic carbon can occur in the terminal lakes of endorheic basins—basins that do not drain to external bodies of water. However, the global magnitude of this dissolved inorganic carbon sink is uncertain. Here we present isotopic, radiocarbon, and chemical analyses of groundwater, river water, and sediments from the terminal region of the endorheic Shiyang River drainage basin, in arid northwest China. We estimate that 0.13 Pg of dissolved inorganic carbon was stored in the basin during the mid-Holocene. Pollen-based reconstructions of basin-scale productivity suggest that the mid-Holocene dissolved inorganic carbon sink was two orders of magnitude smaller than terrestrial productivity in the basin. We use estimates of dissolved inorganic carbon storage based on sedimentary data from 11 terminal lakes of endorheic basins around the world as the basis for a global extrapolation of the sequestration of dissolved organic carbon in endorheic basins. We estimate that 0.152 Pg of dissolved inorganic carbon is buried per year today, compared to about 0.211 Pg C yr−1 during the mid-Holocene. We conclude that endorheic basins represent an important carbon sink on the global scale, with a magnitude similar to deep ocean carbon burial.

The ballast effect controls the settling of autochthonous organic carbon in three subtropical karst reservoirs

Abstract:The change in hydrodynamics by damming facilitates the terrestrial biological‑carbon-pump (BCP) effect and promotes the generation and burial of autochthonous organic carbon (OCauto). To constrain the burial fluxes of OCauto is crucial when assessing the role of inland waters in the global carbon cycle as OCauto originating mainly from weathering-derived dissolved inorganic carbon is overlooked in current global carbon budgeting. Here we examined the elemental and carbon isotopic compositions of the settling organic matter collected by sediment traps in three subtropical karst reservoirs (Hongfenghu, Pingzhai and Puding), SW China. The results show that 30- 60% of the settling OC in the studied reservoirs is autochthonous. The proportion of OCauto correlates inversely with OC's settling flux. Interestingly, Hongfenghu Reservoir, featured by the highest trophic state and POC concentration, has the highest fraction of OCauto but the lowest settling flux of OCauto among three reservoirs. The ballast effect of biogenic silica and lithogenic materials, rather than the aquatic primary productivity, is supposed to be the primary factor that governs the settling flux of OCauto in the studied reservoirs. Finally, it is estimated that the settling flux of OCauto in the three reservoirs is 47- 119 g C/m2/yr while the burial flux of OCauto is 10- 26 g C/m2/yr if assuming about 80% of OCauto is remineralized after sedimentation. This study demonstrates for the first time the role of biogenic silica and lithogenic materials' input in reservoir OC's settling which may be the further important due to the strengthening agricultural activity and the increasing fast-flow hydroelectric reservoirs.

Abstract:The chemical weathering process of carbonate rocks consumes a large quantity of CO2. This has great potential as a carbon sink, and it is one of a significant pathway for achieving carbon neutrality. However, the control mechanisms of karst carbon sink fluxes are unclear, and there is a lack of effective and accurate accounting. We took the Puding Shawan karst water‑carbon cycle test site in China, which has identical initial conditions but different land use types, as the research subject. We used controlled experiments over six years to evaluate the mechanisms for the differences in hydrology, water chemistry, concentrations and fluxes of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC). We found that the transition from rock to bare soil to grassland led to increases in the DIC concentration by 0.08-0.62 mmol⋅L-1. The inorganic carbon sink flux (CSF) increased by 3.01-5.26 t⋅C⋅km-2⋅a-1, an increase amplitude of 30-70 %. The flux of dissolved organic carbon (FDOC) increase by 0.28 to 0.52 t⋅C⋅km-2⋅a-1, an increase amplitude of 34-90 %. We also assessed the contribution of land use modifications to regional carbon neutrality, it indicate that positive land use modification can significantly regulate the karst carbon sink, with grassland having the greatest carbon sequestration ability. Moreover, in addition to DOC from soil organic matter degradation, DOC production by chemoautotrophic microorganisms utilizing DIC in groundwater may also be a potential source. Thus, coupled studies of the conversion of DIC to DOC processes in groundwater are an important step in assessing karst carbon sink fluxes.

Abstract:Autochthonic recalcitrant organic carbon is the most stable component in karst aquatic systems. Still, the processes of its generation and transformation remain unclear, which hinders the study of the mechanisms and quantitative calculations of carbon sinks in karst aquatic systems. This study collected water samples from the Li River, a typical surface karst river in Southwest China. Through in situ microbial cultivation and the chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) spectrum, changes in organic carbon components and their contents during the transformation of autochthonic dissolved organic carbon (Auto-DOC) to autochthonic dissolved recalcitrant organic carbon (Auto-RDOC) were analyzed to investigate the inert transformation processes of endogenous organic carbon. This study found that microbial carbon pumps (MCPs) promote the tyrosine-like component condensed into microbial-derived fulvic and humic components via heterotrophic bacteria metabolism, forming Auto-RDOC. During the dry season, the high level of Auto-DOC provides abundant organic substrates for heterotrophic bacteria, resulting in significantly higher Auto-RDOC production compared to the rainy season. This study provides fundamental information on the formation mechanisms of Auto-DOC in karst aquatic systems, which contributes to the assessment of carbon sinks in karst aquatic systems.

Lipid Biomarker Investigation of the Delivery and Preservation of Autochthonous Organic Carbon in the Pearl River and Its Contribution to the Carbon Sink: Evidence from the Water and Surface Sediment

Abstract:The molecular composition of the lipid biomarkers in the surface water, water column, and surface sediments collected along the Pearl River was investigated to identify the mechanisms of the delivery and preservation of autochthonous organic carbon (AOC) and to estimate its contribution to the carbon sink. The spatial distribution of these lipid biomarkers showed that samples collected at high-DIC-concentration sites (DIC: dissolved inorganic carbon) had prominent aquatic autochthonous signatures, while samples collected at low-DIC-concentration sites showed greater terrestrial contributions, which were described as the DIC fertilization effects. In the summer, typically, intense precipitation and flood erosion diluted the biogeochemical composition and carried terrestrial plant detritus. Therefore, the percentage of AOC (auto%) was higher in the winter than in the summer. According to the calculation of the lipid biomarkers, the values of the auto% were 65% (winter) and 54% (summer) in the surface water, 55.9% (winter) and 44.6% (summer) in the below-surface water, and 52.1% (winter) and 43.9% (summer) in the surface sediment, which demonstrated that AOC accounted for a major portion of the TOC. Vertical variability was mainly present in sites with intense flood erosion, which resulted in the mixing and deposition of resuspended sediments. There was a positive correlation of the clay content with the auto% value and the biogeochemical composition, showing that clay adsorbed the organic carbon in the water, vertically deposited it into the sediment, and was the dominant mechanism of the vertical delivery of organic carbon (OC). According to the new karst carbon sink model, based on coupled carbonate weathering and aquatic photosynthesis, the karst carbon sink flux (CSF) in the Pearl River was 2.69 × 106 t/a which was 1.7 times the original estimation (1.58 × 106 t/a), and this did not consider the formation of AOC. This indicated that previously, the contribution of the riverine system to the global karst carbon sink may have been highly underestimated.
Effects of aquatic phototrophs on seasonal hydrochemical, inorganic, and organic carbon variations in a typical karst basin, Southwest China

Abstract:Karst processes play an important role in the global carbon cycle. Aquatic phototrophs can transform bicarbonate, which is mainly derived from the weathering of carbonates, into organic carbon. Carbonate mineral weathering coupled with aquatic photosynthesis can be considered a stable and durable carbon sink process. In this study, we addressed seasonal variations in water chemistry in the Lijiang River Basin, which is a typical karst basin, through a comprehensive geochemical study of the river water in four seasons. The parameters were measured in situ, including major ions and isotopes of inorganic and organic carbon. The results showed that (1) DIC was mainly derived from the weathering of carbonates; (2) the transformation from bicarbonate to organic carbon by aquatic phototrophs was evident, and the water chemistry changed, especially in spring and autumn and in the mainstream from Guilin to Yangshuo, which benefited the growth of aquatic phototrophs; and (3) the organic carbon derived from bicarbonates by aquatic phototrophs was nearly half the total organic carbon and 8% of the dissolved inorganic carbon. These results imply that aquatic phototrophs in karst basins can significantly stabilize carbon originating from carbonate rock weathering processes in karst areas.
Carbon Isotopic Constraints on Basin-Scale Vertical and Lateral Particulate Organic Carbon Dynamics in the Northern South China Sea

Abstract:Lateral particle transport in shelf/slope settings of marginal sea systems may potentially supply allochthonous particulate organic carbon (POC) to the ocean interior. The magnitude and prevalence of such processes has implications for our understanding of the functioning and efficiency of modern biological carbon pump processes, as well as for interpretation of deep ocean sediment records. Yet, ages and relative contribution of POC from different sources to deep ocean basins are much less understood. Here, based on radiocarbon (F-m, fraction modern), stable carbon (delta C-13(org)), and other geochemical analysis of particles intercepted by time-series sediment traps deployed at three different depths (1,000, 2,150, and 3,200 m), we constrain the source of the sinking POC in the deep basin of northern South China Sea (SCS). The results show that the modern POC derived from surface ocean productivity, acting as the vertical vector, accounts for 87% +/- 4% of sinking POC on average, while the lateral vector (aged POC hosted on resuspended sediment) comprises the remainder (13%). The contribution of laterally supplied POC increases with depth and is composed of aged POC derived from several sources. The majority stems from sediment resuspension of the northeastern SCS slope, that entrains aged marine POC (dominant), fossil OC, and soil OC (least significant). The diminished proportion of fossil OC in deep basin sinking POC relative to Taiwan-proximal areas is likely due to its dispersion via resuspension-deposition loops and dilution by POC stemming from modern surface ocean productivity during the delivery.

Abstract:Recalcitrant dissolved organic matter (RDOM) is a key component of ocean carbon sinks and it can be preserved in seawater for thousands of years. However, the fate of RDOM derived from the primary production in inland lake is unclear. In this study of Erhai lake in China, used the combination of δ 13 C, carbon/nitrogen (C/N) ratio, and optical spectroscopy analyses to constrain the variation of organic matter in the vertical direction (i.e., lake water → trap sediments → surface sediments → core sediments), to trace the burial process of RDOM. Two autochthonous components (C1, C2) and two allochthonous components (C3, C4) were identified in the water. High concentrations of C2 in winter and spring indicate that these two seasons provide favourable burial conditions for autochthonous dissolved organic matter. Three autochthonous components (C1, C2, C5) and three allochthonous components (C3, C4, C6) were identified in the sediments. The contributions of autochthonous organic matter were ∼49.9 ± 5.84 % (based on PARAFAC analysis) and ∼56.7 ± 5.62 % (based on the C/N ratio) in the sediment trap samples; 43.4 ± 8.84 % (based on PARAFAC analysis) and 40.8 ± 14.26 % (based on the C/N ratio) in the surface sediments; and 44.5 ± 14.4 % (based on PARAFAC analysis) and 48.4 ± 6.04 % (based on the C/N ratio) in the core sediments. Additionally, C2, which is the autochthonous component after microbial mineralisation, was preserved as a significant part of the RDOM in the water. Our results suggest that the mineralisation of autochthonous organic matter (OM) in the core sediments did not promote bacterial mineralization, and that the burial of OM on long timescales dependents primarily on its concentration rather than on its origin. Our results provide a new perspective for studying the stability of autochthonous OM and highlight a new direction for the study of the carbon sink of inland lakes.

Abstract:Geochemical characteristics and sedimentary processes of sediments, especially mixed sediments, have long been hot topics of research in basin systems, which can be used to infer runoff, evaporation, productivity, precipitation patterns of the paleoenvironment, as well as records of a diverse range of climate-related signs. However, compared with shallow marine mixed siliciclastic-carbonate sediments, the study of lacustrine mixed sedimentary systems in combination with geochemical information is relatively limited. Also, model-based study on the reconstruction of the lacustrine carbon biogeochemical cycle is defective, especially in saline lacustrine environments. In this work, a total of 26 mixed siliciclastic–carbonate sediment core samples from Well BX-7 in the Qianjiang Depression were sequentially selected for scanning electron microscope observation, major and minor element test, and isotope measurements (e.g., δ13Ccarb, δ18Ocarb, and δ34SCAS). Two types of mixed sediments were generated in the overall inflow/outflow balance of water within the saline basin during the Eocene: siliciclastic-dominated mixed sediment (SDMS) and carbonate-dominated mixed sediment (CDMS). The δ13Ccarb values of SDMS and CDMS samples range from −7.13‰ to −4.52‰ (average −5.82‰) and −9.00‰ to −6.11‰ (average −7.48‰), respectively. The δ18Ocarb values of SDMS and CDMS samples range from −10.26‰ to −1.40‰ (average −4.73‰) and −3.80‰ to −0.96‰ (average −1.55‰), respectively. In addition, combining the geochemical parameters of sedimentation rate, Mn2+ content in carbonate lattice ([Mncarb]), carbonate mass fraction, and [Mg2+]/[Ca2+] ratio, we established a lacustrine δ13C variation model at the sediment-water interface (SWI) with the aim of accurately reflecting δ13Ccarb changes during carbonate formation. Based on the sedimentary processes and geochemical characteristics, we established two depositional models for these two types of mixed sediments in a saline lacustrine basin in the overall inflow/outflow balance of water. Model I illustrates SDMS sedimentary processes with a relative low salinity, low FluxDIC-O, high water inflow, and the organic carbon oxidation is dominated by Fe (III) reduction. Model II demonstrates CDMS sedimentary processes with a high salinity, high FluxDIC-O, high water outflow, and the organic carbon oxidation is dominated by sulfate reduction.
Multi-tracer evidence for the presence of autochthonous organic carbon and the role of biological carbon pump in two river–reservoir ecosystems on the Chinese Loess Plateau

Abstract:The biological carbon pump (BCP) effect of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC)-enriched karst surface waters is an important carbon sink mechanism that has substantial implications for the study of global missing carbon sinks and carbon cycling. However, the operation of the BCP is not established well in wider inland waters, particularly not in the surface waters of the Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP) that are also DIC-enriched but have high turbidity. In this study, we combined analyses of stable isotopes (δ 2 H, δ 18 O, and δ 13 C) and C/N ratios, ultraviolet absorption spectroscopy, and excitation-emission matrix fluorescence approaches to investigate the sources and compositions of particulate organic carbon (POC) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in two river–reservoir ecosystems [the Wulihe (WLH)-river to WLH-reservoir and Honghe (HH)-river to HH-reservoir] on the CLP. Both DOC and POC signals from autochthonous production gradually increased from the river inflow to the reservoir areas along the river flow, particularly during the wet season with the same duration of rain and heat. The WLH-reservoir had higher δ 2 H, δ 18 O, and δ 13 C values, more protein-like fluorescence components, higher chlorophyll-a and DOC concentrations, and lower CO 2 efflux than the HH-reservoir. Our results showed that the BCP intensity of the WLH-reservoir was higher than that of the HH-reservoir, probably because of the longer water residence time of the WLH-reservoir. Although the amount of autochthonous dissolved organic matter (Auto-DOM) produced by the BCP in the surface water on the CLP was lower than that in the CKR, the proportion of Auto-DOM in the CLP was close to that in the karst regions of southwest China (CKR), indicating the significance of Auto-DOM in the surface water on the CLP. Furthermore, the BCP-derived Auto-DOM correlated negatively with the partial pressure of CO 2 , and the WLH-reservoir with a higher BCP effect exhibited CO 2 influx in the wet season (−1.47 ± 0.02 g m −2 d −1 ), indicating that the enhanced BCP process contributed to the water–air interface carbon sink. This study highlighted that enhanced BCP could generate carbon sinks in DIC-enriched but high-turbidity surface waters, providing the underlying theory for extending the BCP carbon sink model to a wider range of surface waters flowing through areas of soil carbonate.

Abstract:In the Karst Critical Zone (KCZ), mining and urbanization activities produce multiple pollutants, posing a threat to the vital groundwater and surface water resources essential for drinking and irrigation. Despite their importance, the interactions between these pollutants in the intricate hydrology and land use of the KCZ remain poorly understood. In this study, we unraveled the transformation mechanisms and sources of nitrogen, sulfate, and carbon using multiple isotopes and the MixSIAR model, following hydrology and surface analyses conducted in spatial modelling with ArcGIS. Our results revealed frequent exchange between groundwater and surface water, as evidenced by the analysis of δD-H 2 O and δ 18 O-H 2 O. Nitrification predominantly occurred in surface water, although denitrification also made a minor contribution. Inorganic nitrogen in both groundwater and surface water primarily originated from soil nitrogen (48 % and 49 %, respectively). Sewage and manure were secondary sources of inorganic nitrogen in surface water, accounting for 41 % in urban and 38 % in mining areas. Notably, inorganic sulfur oxidation displayed significant spatial disparities between urban and mining areas, rendering groundwater more susceptible to sulfur pollution compared to surface water. The frequent interchange between groundwater and surface water posed a higher pollution risk to groundwater. Furthermore, the primary sources of CO 2 and HCO 3 − in both groundwater and surface water were water‐carbonate reactions and soil respiration. Sulfide oxidation was found to enhance carbonate dissolution, leading to increased CO 2 release from carbonate dissolution in the KCZ. These findings enhance our understanding of the transformation mechanisms and interactions of nitrogen, sulfur, and carbon in groundwater and surface water. This knowledge is invaluable for accurately controlling and treating water pollution in the KCZ.

Abstract:The hydrochemical analysis method was used to reveal the sources and spatiotemporal variations of carbon and nitrogen elements in the Pingzhai Reservoir, and the C–N coupling cycle and its influence on the karst carbon sink are discussed. The results show the following: (1) The hydrochemical type of the study area is HCO3-Ca. (2) From the river to the reservoir and then to the reservoir outlet, the values of HCO3− and δ13CDIC showed an opposite trend. The values of NO3−, δ15N-NO3−, and δ18O-NO3− were different in each stage of the river. (3) HCO3− mainly comes from the weathering of carbonate rocks and the oxidative decomposition of organic matter. Nitrate mainly comes from chemical fertilizers, soil organic nitrogen, sewage, and livestock manure. (4) The average proportion of HCO3− produced by HNO3 dissolving carbonate rock is 8.38%, but this part does not constitute a carbon sink. Compared with rivers, the proportion of HCO3− and (Ca2+ + Mg2+) produced by HNO3 dissolving carbonate rock in reservoir water is relatively large. The input of nitrate not only pollutes the water body with NO3− but also changes the carbon source/sink pattern of the water–rock interaction.

Abstract:Atmospheric carbon sequestered in karst systems through dissolution of carbonate minerals is considered to have no net effect on long-term regional and global carbon budgets because precipitation of dissolved carbonate minerals emits CO2 back to the atmosphere. Even though recent studies have implied that rapid kinetics of carbonate dissolution coupled with the aquatic photosynthetic uptake of dissolve inorganic carbon (DIC) could facilitate a stable atmospheric C sink in karst rivers and streams, little is known about the magnitudes and long-term stability of this C sink. To assess in-stream biogeochemical processes and their role on stream C cycling, we measured diel cycles of water characteristics and chemical composition (temperature, pH, DO, SpC, DIC, Ca2+, δ13CDIC) in a groundwater-fed karst stream in southwest China. Our results show no diel variations at the groundwater discharge point (CK site) due to the absence of a sub-aquatic community (SAC). However, all hydrochemical parameters show significant diel cycle 1.3km downstream (LY site). Diel variations in pH, DO, and δ13CDIC were inversely related to diel changes in SpC, DIC, Ca2+ and pCO2. This result indicates that in-stream metabolism (photosynthesis and respiration) of SAC controls diel variations in stream water chemistry. Significant diel cycles of net ecosystem production (NEP) influences in-stream diel fluctuation of pH, DO, SIc, DIC, pCO2, Ca2+ and δ13CDIC, with gross primary production (GPP) dominating in day and ecosystem respiration (ER) dominating at the night. Absence of in-stream metabolism at CK enhances CO2 degassing from stream to the atmosphere, which is estimated to be 3-5 times higher than at LY. We estimate the carbon sink through in-stream metabolism of SAC to be 73tCkm-2a-1, which is around half the rate of the oceanic biological pump. These results imply in-stream photosynthesis sequesters DIC originating from karst weathering and controls CO2 evasion.

Abstract:ABSTRACTSediment movement during erosion, transport and deposition greatly affects the ecosystem of river basins. However, there is presently no consensus as to whether particular river basins act as carbon dioxide (CO2) sources or sinks related to these processes. This paper introduces a rule‐of‐thumb coordinate system based on sediment delivery ratio (SDR) and soil humin content (SHC) in order to evaluate the net effect of soil erosion, sediment transport and deposition on CO2flux in river basins. The SDR–SHC system delineates CO2source and sink areas, and further divides the sink into strong and weak areas according to the world‐average line. The Yellow River Basin, most severely suffering soil erosion in the world, only appears to be a weak erosion‐induced CO2sink in this system. The average annual CO2sequestration is ~0·235 Mt from 1960 to 2008, a relatively small value considering its 3·1% contribution to the World's sediment discharge. The temporal analysis shows that the Yellow River Basin was once a source in the 1960s, but changed its role to become a weak sink in the past 40 years due to both anthropogenic and climatic influences. The spatial analysis identifies the middle sub‐basin as the main source region, and the lower as the main sink. For comparison, sediment‐movement‐related CO2fluxes of eight other major basins in four continents are examined. It is found that the six basins considered in the Northern Hemisphere appear to be sinks, while the other two in the Southern Hemisphere act as sources. Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
Metabolic processes drive spatio-temporal variations of carbon sink/source in a karst river

Abstract:Riverine carbon dioxide (CO2) exchange is a crucial component of the global carbon cycle. However, the changes in the CO2 sink/source in karst rivers caused by differences in lithological features and climate, hindered the resolution of the spatio-temporal heterogeneity of global inland water carbon emissions. Here, we use hydrochemical data and CO2 gas isotopic data to reveal the spatio-temporal variations of CO2 sink/source in karst rivers and their controlling mechanisms. Fifty-two monitoring transects were set up in the subtropical Lijiang River in southwest China in June and December 2019. Our results indicated that the CO2 flux across the water-air interface (FCO2) in the Lijiang River basin ranged from -43.77 to 519.67 mmol/(m2·d). In June, the Lijiang River acted as an atmospheric carbon source due to higher water temperatures (Twater). However, driven by hydrodynamic conditions and the metabolism of aquatic photosynthesis, the river shifts from being an atmospheric carbon source in June to an atmospheric carbon sink in December. The stable isotopes of CO2 (δ13C-CO2) show significant differences in the spatio-temporal variations of CO2 sink/source. In December, the transects of the Lijiang River basin with a negative CO2 flux are significantly negatively correlated with dissolved oxygen (DO) and chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) concentration (p < 0.05). This confirms that the enhancement of aquatic photosynthesis efficiency increased water DO concentrations, which resulted in the positive movement of water δ13C-CO2 and a decrease in the partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2) and FCO2. Comparative analysis with global river FCO2 indicates that under the combined driving forces of metabolic processes of aquatic photosynthetic organisms and hydrodynamic conditions, rivers tend to act more frequently as CO2 sinks, particularly in subtropical and temperate rivers. In conclusion, this study represents a new example focusing on CO2 dynamics to address the spatio-temporal heterogeneity of carbon emissions in inland waters on a global scale.
Differences and Influencing Factors Related to Underground Water Carbon Uptake by Karsts in the Houzhai Basin, Southwestern China

Abstract:Carbon sink in karstic areas is very important at a global scale. Consequently, accurate determination of the carbon sink of karst ecosystems has become a core issue in research. We used flow and carbon ion concentration data from three stations with different environmental background conditions in the Houzhai Basin, southwestern China, to analyse the differences in carbon uptake between stations and to determine their impact factors. The results show that carbon sink discharge was mainly controlled by the flow at each site. Preliminary analysis indicated that the rapid increase in flow only had a partial dilution effect on the ion concentrations due to the high speed and stability of chemical carbonate weathering. The Land-Use and Cover-Change (LUCC) type had important effects on the bicarbonate ion concentrations; under stable run-off conditions, the influence of flow variation on the ion concentration was lower than the effects of chemical carbonate weathering on bicarbonate ion concentrations under different environmental conditions (a comparison of Laoheitan and Liugu stations showed a difference of 150 %). However, if run-off increased significantly, the impact of run-off variation on bicarbonate ions was greater than the effects of chemical carbonate weathering caused under different environmental conditions. This work provides a reference for the calculation of the karst geological carbon sink.
Organic carbon source tracing and the BCP effect in the Yangtze River and the Yellow River: Insights from hydrochemistry, carbon isotope, and lipid biomarker analyses

Abstract:Autochthonous organic carbon (AOC) formed by biological carbon pump (BCP) in surface waters may serve as a significant carbon sink. The locations, magnitudes, variations and mechanisms responsible for the terrestrial missing carbon sink by BCP are uncertain, especially in large river systems. In this study, hydrochemical characteristics, carbon isotope compositions of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and organic carbon (OC), n-alkane homologues and C/N ratios of organic matter along the Yangtze River and the Yellow River were investigated to constrain the OC source and the significance of BCP effect. It was found that (1) DIC concentrations in the Yellow River were much higher than those in the Yangtze River, which was controlled primarily by the temperature effect; (2) AOC in the both rivers was characterized by lower C/N ratios and δ13CPOC values. Based on calculation of n-alkanes compounds, the AOC proportions ranged from 29 to 88% (49% on average, with a higher proportion (55%) in the rainy season than in the dry season (46%)) and 19-68% (41% on average; with a lower proportion in the rainy season (31%) than in the dry season (51%)) in the Yangtze River and the Yellow River, respectively, indicating intense aquatic production. Low dissolved CO2 concentration (6.17 μmol/L on average) of the Yangtze River limited the aquatic production and decreased the BCP effect in the dry season, indicated by lower AOC proportion. However, the BCP effect increased in the Yellow River in the dry season mainly due to the increased light penetration; (3) even in high turbidity riverine systems such as the Yellow River, the aquatic photosynthetic uptake of DIC could produce considerable AOC. These findings clearly show the formation of AOC by BCP in both the clear and high turbidity riverine systems, suggesting a potential direction for finding the terrestrial missing carbon sink.
