Abstract:Lanthanide rare-earth metals are ubiquitous in modern technologies 1,2,3,4,5 , but we know little about chemistry of the 61st element, promethium (Pm) 6 , a lanthanide that is highly radioactive and inaccessible. Despite its importance 7,8 , Pm has been conspicuously absent from the experimental studies of lanthanides, impeding our full comprehension of the so-called lanthanide contraction phenomenon: a fundamental aspect of the periodic table that is quoted in general chemistry textbooks. Here we demonstrate a stable chelation of the 147 Pm radionuclide (half-life of 2.62 years) in aqueous solution by the newly synthesized organic diglycolamide ligand. The resulting homoleptic Pm III complex is studied using synchrotron X-ray absorption spectroscopy and quantum chemical calculations to establish the coordination structure and a bond distance of promethium. These fundamental insights allow a complete structural investigation of a full set of isostructural lanthanide complexes, ultimately capturing the lanthanide contraction in solution solely on the basis of experimental observations. Our results show accelerated shortening of bonds at the beginning of the lanthanide series, which can be correlated to the separation trends shown by diglycolamides 9,10,11 . The characterization of the radioactive Pm III complex in an aqueous environment deepens our understanding of intra-lanthanide behaviour 12,13,14,15 and the chemistry and separation of the f -block elements 16 .

Abstract:The extraction of lanthanide ions(La3+,Pr3+,Nd3+,Gd3+)from nitric acid solution with mixtures of bis-(1′-phenyl-3′-methyl-5′-pyrazolone-4′-yl)ethanedione (H2BPMPED or H2A)and phenanthroline(phen)has been studied.The synergic extraction coefficent of neodymium is 3.56.The composition of extracted compound of neodymium is shown to be NdA·HA·phen.The pH values of half extraction of La3+,Pr3+,Nd3+,Gd3+ are 4.12,3.74,3.46,3.11 respectively.The extraction equilibrium constants enthalpy change and entropy change of the reaction have been calculated.

Abstract:The surface energy and work function of rare-earth metals (from La to Lu) are studied by the first principles calculations. The obtained values are in good agreement with available experimental data. Motivated by enhanced thermionic emission performance resulting from low work function, we substitutionally doped the rare-earth atoms on W(110) surface to improve the work function. The results show that rare-earth atoms doping can significantly reduce the work function of the W(110) surface, and Eu, Pr and Nd are the three best candidates for work function reduction.

Abstract:A new ligand, N,N'-Bis(6-methyl-2-pyridine-N-oxide)-1,3-propane (L), and some binary lanthanide complexes (Ln = Eu3+, Tb3+) were synthesized and characterized in detail. The composition of the binary complexes was determined as LnL(NO3)(3). They are 1: 1 electrolytes in DMF. The complexes have strong characteristic line fluorescence emission spectra, and it is also found that TbL(NO3)(3) complex has stronger luminescence intensity than EuL(NO3)(3) in solid state and in methanol.

Abstract:The solid complexes of 16 rare earth elements with bis (2,4,4-trimethylpentyl)phosphinic acid (HBTMPP) were synthesized and their composition was identified to beRE(BTMPP)_3. The thermal analyses of the complexes were studied in Ar or air. Thethermo-decomposition residues of the complexes were verified by element analysis, infraredspectra and X-ray diffraction to be RE_4(P_2O_7)_3 in Ar or RE_2P_4O_(13) in air. The infrared andRaman spectra were measured for RE(BTMPP)_3 and principal absorption bands were as-signed. The results showed that the RE-O bands of RE(BTMPP)_3 are principally ionic.

Since 2019, four Tb(IV) and Pr(IV) molecular complexes have been successful prepared and will open a new avenue for the development of tetravalent rare‐earth chemistry. Abstract:The pentavalent oxidation state of praseodymium – a long-sought connection between lanthanide, early-transition, and actinide metal redox chemistries – has only been identified in gas-phase or matrix isolation environments. We report the low-temperature characterization of a molecular praseodymium complex in the formal +5 oxidation state, [Pr5+(NP(tBu3)4][X–] (where tBu = tert-butyl and X– = tetrakis(pentafluorophenyl)borate or hexafluorophosphate). Single-crystal X-ray diffraction, solution-state spectroscopic, solution magnetometric, density functional theory, and multireference wavefunction-based methods indicate a highly multiconfigurational, singlet ground state. An inverted ligand field drives this unique electronic structure, which establishes a critical link in understanding the bonding of high-valent metal complexes across the periodic table.

Abstract:RE2Fe14B-based (RE, rare earth) permanent magnets containing abundant and cheap La/Ce have attracted intense attention recently. In comparison with Ce that can fully replace Nd in the 2:14:1 lattice, La substitution for Nd has long been limited at a low level. Here we present that through doping La35Ce65 alloy with the La/Ce ratio in natural mineral, stable 2:14:1 phase can be maintained at 1273 K within the entire substitution range of [(La35Ce65)x(Pr20Nd80)1-x]2.14Fe14B (0.6 ≤ x ≤ 1.0, at.%), as verified by composition analysis, microstructural characterization and magnetic measurements. Interestingly, the promoted La solution in 2:14:1 phase induces two unique findings upon coexisting La-Ce-Pr-Nd: i) Compared to Ce that fits well with the nominal concentration, La deviates noticeably from the nominal one; ii) Nanoscale spinodal-decomposition-like phase separation is observed due to different solubilities of La-Ce-Pr-Nd elements in 2:14:1 phase. Above joint effects induce higher Curie temperature than estimation based on the rule of mixture, which delights the prospect of La35Ce65 alloy in developing low-cost permanent materials.

Abstract:These metallic elements — yttrium, scandium and the lanthanides — now have a wide range of uses, including strong permanent magnets (from Nd, Pr and Sm), superalloys, phosphors and ceramics; yttrium is the key to the most commonly used high-temperature superconducting copper oxide. But the rare earths remain in relatively short supply throughout the world, the primary sources being in China (38%), Vietnam, Brazil and Russia. That combination of utility and uncertainty of supply was what led to the rare earths being classified as "critical" metals in a 2006 report by the US National Research Council 1 . Graedel et al. subsequently showed that several of the rare earths, including La, Eu, Dy, Tm and Yb, lack any good substitutes in their major areas of application, and that most have some degree of vulnerability in this regard 2 . As a result, they concluded, economic and population growth mean that "scientists will be increasingly challenged to maintain and improve product utility by designing new and better materials, but doing so under potential constraints in resource availability."

Abstract:IN their interesting note on the discovery of illinium (NATURE, June 5, p. 792) upon which the authors, Messrs. Harris, Yntema, and Prof. Hopkins, may be congratulated, I find the statement that “there were no theoretical grounds for supposing that eka-neodymium [sic !] might exist until Moseley's rule showed that element number 61 was still to be identified”. Having devoted almost all my scientific life—since 1877—to the theoretical and practical study of the elements of the rare earths, and especially to the question regarding their position in Mendeléeff's periodic system (the object was not very popular forty-eight years ago !), one of the results of which was the decomposition of the old didymium in 1882, I arrived at the conviction that the gap between the neodymium and samarium was abnormally large. In my paper read before the Bohemian Academy and the Russian Association of Scientists in St. Petersburg in 1902, I came to the conclusion—not reached by any chemist before—that the following seven elements, possessing now the atomic numbers 43, 61, 72, 75, 85, 87, and 89, remained to be discovered. As regards element No. 61, the difference between the atomic weights of Sm – Nd = 6.1, and it is greater than that between any other two neighbouring elements. It is remarkable that it is of the same order as that between the atomic weights of Mo – Ru = 5.7, between which stands ekamanganese, and of Os – W = 6.9, between which stands dwimanganese, recently discovered in our laboratory by Heyrovský and Dolejšek.

Abstract:The chemistry of lanthanides (Ln = La-Lu) is dominated by the low-valent +3 or +2 oxidation state because of the chemical inertness of the valence 4f electrons. The highest known oxidation state of the whole lanthanide series is +4 for Ce, Pr, Nd, Tb, and Dy. We report the formation of the lanthanide oxide species PrO4 and PrO2+ complexes in the gas phase and in a solid noble-gas matrix. Combined infrared spectroscopic and advanced quantum chemistry studies show that these species have the unprecedented Pr-V oxidation state, thus demonstrating that the pentavalent state is viable for lanthanide elements in a suitable coordination environment.

Abstract:For some intermetallic compounds containing lanthanides, structural transitions can result in intermediate electronic states between trivalency and tetravalency; however, this is rarely observed for praseodymium compounds. The dominant trivalency of praseodymium limits potential discoveries of emergent quantum states in itinerant 4 f 1 systems accessible using Pr 4+ -based compounds. Here, we use in situ powder x-ray diffraction and in situ electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) to identify an intermetallic example of a dominantly Pr 4+ state in the polymorphic system Pr 2 Co 3 Ge 5 . The structure-valence transition from a nearly full Pr 4+ electronic state to a typical Pr 3+ state shows the potential of Pr-based intermetallic compounds to host valence-unstable states and provides an opportunity to discover previously unknown quantum phenomena. In addition, this work emphasizes the need for complementary techniques like EELS when evaluating the magnetic and electronic properties of Pr intermetallic systems to reveal details easily overlooked when relying on bulk magnetic measurements alone.

Abstract:Three rare earth complexes of [Ln(5-Cl-2MOBA)(3)pher](2) (Ln=Nd(1), Eu(2), Ho(3); 5-Cl-2MOBA: 5-chloro-2-methoxybenzoate; phen: 1,10-phenanthroline) were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, thermogravimetry-differential thermogravimetry-differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DTG-DSC), infrared (IR) spectra, ultraviolet (UV) spectra, and molar conductance techniques. The fluorescence spectra showed that complex (2) emitted a characteristic fluorescence of the Eu3+ ions. The thermal properties are discussed by thermogravimetry - differential scanning calorimetry / Fourier transform infrared (TG-DSC/FTIR) techniques. And the three-dimensional IR accumulation spectra for the three complexes were also analyzed.
