Abstract:We report a novel architecture of ultrathin RuRh@(RuRh)O2core/shell nanosheets with a core of ultrathin metallic RuRh nanosheets and a shell of (RuRh)O2oxides as a superb electrocatalyst toward the oxgen evolution reaction (OER), better than most of the state-of-the-art Ru-based or Ir-based electrocatalysts. Moreover, the RuRh@(RuRh)O2core/shell nanosheets exhibit good durability because the (RuRh)O2oxide shell protects the normally labile RuRh NS core against dissolution during the OER process.
Multimetallic AuPd@Pd@Pt Core-Interlayer-shell Icosahedral Electrocatalysts for Highly Efficient Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Abstract:Incorporating Pt with core metals into Pt-based core-shell catalysts is regarded as a promising strategy to substantially enhance the catalytic properties towards oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in fuel cells due to the synergetic effect between distinct metals. In this wok, ultrathin Pt skins with two atomic layers were epitaxially coated on as-prepared icosahedral Au50Pd50, Au60Pd40 and Au-66 Pd-34 nanocrystal seeds, which are constructed with alloyed cores and Pd shells with different thickness. Through electron microscopic characterizations, Pd interlayers with tunable thickness of 3, 6, and 12 atomic layers can be found in the Au66Pd34@Pt, Au60Pd40@Pt and Au50Pd50@Pt icosahedra, respectively. These icosahedral AuPd@Pd@Pt nanocrystals show substantially enhanced activities and durabilities in electrocatalytic measurements towards ORR compared to Au75Pd25@Pt icosahedra without Pd interlayer and commercial Pt/C catalysts. Specifically, Au-60 Pd-40@Pt icosahedra with 6 atomically thick Pd interlayer display the best electrocatalytic performances, whose mass activities before and after durability tests of 50,000 cycles are 11.6 and 30.2 times, respectively, as high as that of the commercial Pt/C. Abstract:Achieving high activity and long-term stability is a major challenge in the design of catalysts. In particular, the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in acidic media, which plays a key role in proton exchange membrane electrolyzers for fast hydrogen fuel generation, seriously suffers from rapid degradation of catalysts as a result of the harsh acidic and oxidative conditions. Here, we report a rational design strategy for the fabrication of a heterostructured OER electrocatalyst (Ru@IrOx) that has unique physicochemical properties and in which a strong charge redistribution exists between a highly strained ruthenium core and a partially oxidized iridium shell across the metal-metal oxide heterojunction. The increased valence of the iridium shell and the decreased valence of the ruthenium core activate a synergistic electronic and structural interaction, which results in the enhanced activity and stability of the catalyst compared with the majority of the state-of-the-art ruthenium- and iridium-based materials.

Abstract:Abstract Although researches on non-noble metal electrocatalysts have been made some progress recently, their performance in proton exchange membrane water electrolyzer is still incomparable to that of noble-metal-based catalysts. Therefore, it is a more practical way to improve the utilization of precious metals in electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in the acidic medium. Herein, nanostructured IrCo@IrCoO x core–shell electrocatalysts composed of IrCo alloy core and IrCoO x shell were synthesized through a simple colloidally synthesis and calcination method. As expected, the hybrid IrCo-200 NPs with petal-like morphology show the best OER activities in acidic electrolytes. They deliver lower overpotential and better electrocatalytic kinetics than pristine IrCo alloy and commercial Ir/C, reaching a low overpotential ( j = 10 mA cm −2 ) of 259 mV (versus RHE) and a Tafel slope of 59 mV dec −1 . The IrCo-200 NPs displayed robust durability with life time of about 55 h in acidic solution under a large current density of 50 mA cm −2 . The enhanced electrocatalytic activity may be associated with the unique metal/amorphous metal oxide core–shell heterostructure, allowing the improved charge transferability. Moreover, the *OH-rich amorphous shell functions as the active site for OER and prevents the further dissolution of the metallic core and thus ensures high stability.

Abstract:The development of highly active and durable electrocatalysts towards oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in acidic solution is essential for the commercialization of proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE). Herein, we design a rational CO-induced phase-segregation strategy to efficient construction of core-shell structure electrocatalyst featured with IrRux core and Ir-rich shell (IrRux@Ir). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy reveals that the intensive electronic interaction between IrRux core and Ir-rich shell induces the charge transfer from Ir to IrRux, thereby increasing the oxidation state of surface Ir sites and leading to an enhanced OER activity. Simultaneously, the Ir-rich shell efficiently protects the inner Ru atoms against dissolution during the long-term electrolysis, in turn significantly improving the structural stability. The resultant IrRux@Ir catalyst exhibits a low overpotential of ca. 288 mV at a current density of 10 mAcm−2 and desirable durability. Impressively, the membrane electrode assembly integrated with IrRux@Ir as anode maintains a steady value of approximately 1.83 ± 0.02 V during 400 h of electrolysis at a current density of 1 A cm−2, demonstrating that the IrRux@Ir is one of the most robust OER electrocatalyst to date. This study provides a new perspective to design high performance and robust OER electrocatalysts in PEMWE.

Abstract:The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a crucial reaction in water splitting, metal–air batteries, and other electrochemical conversion technologies. Rationally designed catalysts with rich active sites and high intrinsic activity have been considered as a hopeful strategy to address the sluggish kinetics for OER. However, constructing such active sites in non-noble catalysts still faces grand challenges. To this end, we fabricate a Ni2P@Fe2P core–shell structure with outperforming performance toward OER via chemical transformation of rationally designed Ni-MOF hybrid nanosheets. Specifically, the Ni-MOF nanosheets and their supported Fe-based nanomaterials were in situ transformed into porous Ni2P@Fe2P core–shell nanosheets composed of Ni2P and Fe2P nanodomains in homogenous dispersion via a phosphorization process. When employed as the OER electrocatalyst, the Ni2P@Fe2P core–shell nanosheets exhibits excellent OER performance, with a low overpotential of 238/247 mV to drive 50/100 mA cm−2, a small Tafel slope of 32.91 mV dec−1, as well as outstanding durability, which could be mainly ascribed to the strong electronic interaction between Ni2P and Fe2P nanodomains stabilizing more Ni and Fe atoms with higher valence. These high-valence metal sites promote the generation of high-active Ni/FeOOH to enhance OER activity.

Abstract:Noble metal based one-dimensionally (1D) bimetallic nanostructures are attracting increasing interest in energy conversion field because of their structural advantages and tunable chemical composition. At present, the facile and efficient synthesis of high-quality Au-core noble metal-shell nanowires still maintains the challenge. Herein, we develop a feasible one-pot chemical-reduction strategy to rapidly synthesize high-quality core-shell nanowires ( CSNWs) in 1-naphthol ethanol solution and explore their potential application in electrocatalysis. Expermattial results show the formation core-shell structure originates from the deposition-growth of Ir atoms at preferentially generated Au nanowires surface. When using as an electrocatalyst towards oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in alkaline media, CSNWs show Pt-like ORR electroactivity due to the compositional synergism effect and structural advantages of 1D nanowires, accompanying with excellent durability and extremely enhanced methanol tolerance towards ORR.

Abstract:RuO2 is widely used as an acidic electrocatalyst to achieve high catalytic activity, but the severe leaching and scarcity of the Ru element restrict application on a large scale. Strategies such as designing nanostructures and adjusting metals' electronic properties to regulate the adsorption of reaction intermediates can be used for the design and preparation of catalysts. Herein, we designed an acid-treated RuO2/Co3O4 nanostructure electrocatalyst with low Ru content and an intimate heterogeneous interface to disrupt the trade-off relationship between stability and activity. The resulting acid-treated RuO2/Co3O4 displayed an overpotential of 152 mV in a 0.5 M H2SO4 electrolyte, greatly exceeding that of commercial RuO2 (221 mV). Despite continuous operation for 150 h, it still exhibited good stability with a degradation rate of 0.67 mVh(-1). Multiple characterization analyses revealed that an electron transfer occurs from Ru-oct to Co-oct(III) sites through the mutual O atoms in acid-treated RuO2/Co3O4, which is further strengthened by the presence of oxygen vacancies. The oxygen vacancy and heterogeneous interface synergistically regulate electronic dispersion, optimize the adsorption of the oxygen intermediates (*OOH), and improve the reaction kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). This work brings to light the significance of oxygen vacancies for modulating the electronic structure of RuO2 nanoparticles and enhancing stability on Co3O4 support, thus highlighting the use of nanostructure and interfacial engineering to achieve better acidic OER catalyst design.

Abstract:Two catalysts composed of La and Li co‐doped Co3O4 nanofiber (LLCF) as substrate for IrCoOx/RuCoOx clusters, are developed for oxygen evolution. The strategy tunes the electronic configurations of Co, Ir, and Ru toward high catalytic activities, and suppresses local over‐oxidation to soluble states. The incorporation of IrCoOx/RuCoOx clusters and the defect‐rich LLCF, enable catalysis of oxygen evolution with high efficiency and durability for proton exchange membrane water electrolysis. Exploring highly active and robust catalysts, which have low precious metal content, to boost the kinetically sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a key concern for hydrogen production via proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE). Here, rational engineering of the morphology and the local geometric ligand environment of Ir and Ru catalysts are presented by using defect‐rich, lanthanum‐ and lithium‐doped Co3O4 nanofiber (LLCF) as substrate that promotes the electrocatalytic OER. Two catalysts, IrCoOx@LLCF and RuCoOx@LLCF, achieve mass activities of 1013.5 A gIr−1 and 1911.4 A gRu−1 in 0.1 m HClO4 at 300 mV overpotential, respectively, which are 26 and 50 times higher than that of commercial IrO2 and RuO2. Operando X‐ray absorption spectroscopy unveils the reversible structure of IrCoOx during the OER and the suppression of over‐oxidation of Co and Ir, giving rise to high stability. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the local geometric ligand engineering optimizes the binding of oxygenated species to the active sites, resulting in strongly enhanced catalytic activity.

Abstract:Fuel cells, as the alternative to fossil energy, have engaged widespread attention by reason of the high conversion efficiency from the chemical energy to the electric energy combined with low pollution emissions. The cathodic ORR catalysts with excellent performance and cost-effectiveness are the dominant point towards the massive development of fuel cells. Here, our group select the Pd NWs as the template and construct the Pd@PtRuNi core–shell bilayer nanostructure to expand platinum atom utilization. Pd@PtRuNi bilayer core–shell NWs unfold elevated mass activity of 1.62 A mg metal − 1 at 0.9 V versus RHE in alkaline media, 2.03- and 6.23-fold of pristine Pd NWs and benchmark commercial Pt/C, respectively. Meanwhile, the cyclic stability tests reveal the excellent durability of Pd@PtRuNi NWs, whose mass activity is only 13.58% degradation after accelerated durability tests. The catalytic activity and durability towards ORR are better than the U.S. 2025 DOE target ( 0.44 A mg pt − 1 and less than 40% activity attenuation at 0.9 V after 30 000 potential cycles). The elevated catalytic properties can be traceable to the synergism between the ligand effect of Ni and Ru and one-dimensional structure superiority, which optimizes the electronic structure of active sites, promotes the charge transfer and restrains the agglomeration and detachment.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic water oxidation is a crucial process for many conversion and storage systems. Developing noble-metal-free oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts with high activity and long durability thus becomes immensely vital yet challenging. In this work, core-branch Co3O4 @CoNi-layered double hydroxide nanoarrays are developed on nickel foam with the assistance of metal-organic-frameworks template and atomic layer deposition technology, acting as active and durable electrocatalysts for OER. The introduction of CoNi-LDH significantly regulates the morphological and electronic structure of Co3O4, giving rise to high surface-active sites exposure, accelerated electron transfer, and optimal interaction with intermediate products. Together with the 3D self-supported and binder-free structure, the optimized Co3O4@CoNi-LDH/NF exhibits remarkable OER performances in terms of low overpotential, high OER current density, and low Tafel slope, which are even better than the benchmark IrO2 electrocatalyst. This study provides a new horizon for exploring biphasic core-branch materials for electrocatalysis and other energy-related applications.

Boosting Bifunctional Catalysis by Integrating Active Faceted Intermetallic Nanocrystals and Strained Pt–Ir Functional Shells

Abstract:The quasi–octahedral core–shell particles are successfully fabricated, consisting of intermetallic PtCo cores and ultrathin PtIr shells. The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) mass activity of the nanoparticles is six times that of Pt/C and the durability is extraordinary. They perform impressive ORR–oxygen evolution reaction (OER) bifunctionality with the overpotential gap of 679 mV. PtIr‐based nanostructures are fascinating materials for application in bifunctional oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysis. However, the fabrication of PtIr nanocatalysts with clear geometric features and structural configurations, which are crucial for enhancing the bifunctionality, remains challenging. Herein, PtCo@PtIr nanoparticles are precisely designed and fabricated with a quasi‐octahedral PtCo nanocrystal as a highly atomically ordered core and an ultrathin PtIr atomic layer as a compressively strained shell. Owing to their geometric and core–shell features, the PtCo@PtIr nanoparticles deliver approximately six and eight times higher mass and specific activities, respectively, as an ORR catalyst than a commercial Pt/C catalyst. The half‐wave potential of PtCo@PtIr exhibits a negligible decrease by 9 mV after 10 000 cycles, indicating extraordinary ORR durability because of the ordered arrangement of Pt and Co atoms. When evaluated using the ORR–OER dual reaction upon the introduction of Ir, PtCo@PtIr exhibits a small ORR–OER overpotential gap of 679 mV, demonstrating its great potential as a bifunctional electrocatalyst for fabricating fuel cells. The findings pave the way for designing precise intermetallic core–shell nanocrystals as highly functional catalysts.

Core-branch Co Ni Hydroxysulfides with Versatilely Regulated Electronic and Surface Structures for Superior Oxygen Evolution Electrocatalysis

Abstract:To satisfy the rapid development of gas-involving electrocatalysis (O-2, CO2, N-2, etc.), nanostructured electrocatalysts with favorably regulated electronic structure and surface nanostructures are urgently required. Herein, we highlighted a core-branch hydroxysulfide as a significantly enhanced oxygen evolution reaction electrocatalyst. This hydroxysulfide was facilely fabricated via a versatile interfacial reaction in S2- inorganic solution at room temperature for a designed period. The moderative growth kinetics contributed to the growth of interconnected hydroxysulfide nanosheets with high-sulfur contents on the hydroxide precursor substrates, resulting in a hierarchical nanostructure with multifunctional modifications, including regulated electronic structure, rapid electron highway, excellent accessibility, and facilitated mass transfer. Such synthetic methodology can be generalized and facilely governed by regulating the temperature, concentration, duration, and solvent for targeted nanostructures. Contributed to the favorably regulated electronic structure and surface nanostructure, the as-obtained core-branch Co2NiS2.4(OH)(1.2) sample exhibits superior OER performance, with a remarkably low overpotential (279 mV required for 10.0 mA cm(-2)), a low Tafel slope (52 mV dec(-1)), and a favorable long-term stability. This work not only presents a promising nanostructured hydroxysulfide for excellent OER electrocatalysis, but also shed fresh lights on the further rational development of efficient electrocatalysts. Size-Dependent Core-Shell Fine Structures and Oxygen Evolution Activity of Electrochemical IrOx Nanoparticles Revealed by Cryogenic Electron Microscopy

Abstract:Electrochemically oxidized amorphous iridium oxides (IrOx) offer significantly improved electrocatalytic activities on the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) compared to crystalline IrO2, yet the origin of their decent activity and their size-dependent properties have not been fully understood. An important argument is the formation of deprotonated oxygen species not only at the topmost surface but also at the near surface, which creates an electrophilic character that activates the OER electrocatalysis. However, high spatial resolution identification of the electrophilic oxygen species remains unachieved. We address this hitherto-unresolved problem on size-selected electrochemical IrOx nanoparticles (NPs) by using cryogenic scanning transmission electron microscopy combined with electron energy loss spectroscopy, which enables simultaneous atomic detection of the near surface compositional and electronic structures with minimal damage that are further correlated with their size-dependent OER activities. Depending on the particle size, the electrochemical IrOx NPs showed distinctly different core-shell fine structures ranging from amorphous and hydrous IrOxHy NPs to a "metallic Ir core/sub-stoichiometric IrOx interlayer/amorphous IrOxHy shell" NP structure. Moreover, the formation of deprotonated, electrophilic oxygen is directly identified at the substoichiometric IrOx interface layer. These features account for a previously unestablished particle size effect of the electrochemical IrOx NPs, showing increasing water oxidation reactivity with an increasing nanoparticle size. Our results provide important insights into how subsurface oxygen chemistry controls the surface reactivity in the nanoscale Ir-based OER electrocatalysts.
RuO2@IrO2/C Core-Shell Structure Catalyst for Efficient and Durable Acidic Oxygen Evolution

Abstract:Proton exchange membrane (PEM) water electrolysis for hydrogen production has a high current density and overall efficiency, and is a very promising hydrogen production strategy. However, its application is limited by the high anodic overpotential for oxygen evolution and the instability of catalysts. Therefore, anodic catalysts with a high activity and durability under acidic conditions need further research. Herein, we first synthesized the key intermediate Ru@Ir core-shell structures by controlling nanocrystals, then loaded them onto a carbon support and calcined to obtain a RuO2@IrO2/C core-shell nanocatalyst with a size smaller than 5 nm, whose activity exceeded that of commercial RuO2 and commercial IrO2. After a 200 h stability test, the catalyst did not show significant performance degradation or structural degeneration. Finally, the prepared catalyst was assembled into a PEM electrolyzer showing the same results as the three-electrode tests, demonstrating its potential for practical applications and providing new insights for designing nanocatalysts suitable for industrialized PEM water electrolysis to produce hydrogen

Abstract:It is of significance to replace Pt-based electrocatalyst with high activity and low price non-noble metal oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysts for large-scale application of fuel cells. Herein, we display a kind of core–shell hybrid composed of Fe/Fe3 carbon decorated on graphene (denoted as Fe/Fe3) as the efficient ORR electrocatalyst. The optimal-performing Fe/Fe3 catalyst presents an outstanding ORR performance in terms of a high onset potential (Eonset) of 0.97 V (vs. RHE) and half-wave potential (E1/2) of 0.88 V (vs. RHE), respectively, possible to rival those of the commercially available Pt/C in an alkaline electrolyte solution. Besides, the Fe/Fe3 catalyst manifests better stability and methanol tolerance than those of commercially available Pt/C, which is of importance for the excogitation and fabrication of novel electrocatalysts originated from non-precious metals. Accordingly, it is confirmed that the integration of Fe/Fe3 and graphene enables plentiful active sites stemmed from different active species of Fe3C, Fe, and NC and intrinsic hierarchically porous structure with intimate contact of various components, which would give Fe/Fe3 a positive impact on ORR activity.

Abstract:The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) occurs at the anode in numerous electrochemical reactions and plays an important role due to the nature of proton-coupled electron transfer. However, the high voltage requirement and low stability of the OER dramatically limits the total energy converting efficiency. Recently, electrocatalysts based on multi-metal oxyhydroxides have been reported as excellent substitutes for commercial noble metal catalysts due to their outstanding OER activities. However, normal synthesis routes lead to either the encapsulation of excessively active sites or aggregation during the electrolysis. To this end, we design a novel core-shell structure integrating CoMoO4 as support frameworks covered with two-dimensional γ-FeOOH nanosheets on the surface. By involving CoMoO4, the electrochemically active surface area is significantly enhanced. Additionally, Co atoms immerge into the γ-FeOOH nanosheet, tuning its electronic structure and providing additional active sites. More importantly, the catalysts exhibit excellent OER catalytic performance, reducing overpotentials to merely 243.1 mV a versus 10 mA cm-2. The current strategy contributes to advancing the frontiers of new types of OER electrocatalysts by applying a proper support as a multi-functional platform.
