Abstract:This paper deals with the cross-diffusion three-species model with prey-taxis incorporating Beddington–DeAngelis response under homogeneous Neumann boundary condition. In addition to random diffusion, the predators and preys have cross-diffusion and prey-taxis during the process of interaction. By applying the contraction mapping principle, the Hölder continuity, the parabolic Schauder estimates and parabolic Lp estimates, we prove that there exists a unique global classical solution of this system.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the traveling waves for a modified Holling-Tanner predator–prey model with degenerate diffusion. Different from the established approaches of constructing upper-lower solutions, we construct a new and suitable pair of upper-lower solutions by solving three differential equations and establish the existence of traveling waves for any when . In addition, we obtain the minimal wave speed when , without reconstructing the upper-lower solutions. Furthermore, the asymptotic behavior of traveling waves at infinity is obtained by the upper-lower solutions and the contracting rectangle method.

This paper is concerned with the propagation phenomenon of a non-local dispersal predator–prey system involving two preys and one predator in a shifting habitat. Assuming that the growth rate of each prey is moving to the right at a speed of [math] and the habitat is suitable for each prey to survive before the shifting edge, while the habitat behind the boundary is not suitable for survival. For any given speed of the shifting habitat edge, we establish four types of forced extinction waves, which describe the conversion from the state of a saturated aboriginal prey with a pair of invading alien predator–prey, two aboriginal co-existent preys with an invading alien predator, a pair of aboriginal co-existent predator–prey and an invading alien prey, and the co-existence of three species to the extinction state, respectively. Meanwhile, we show the non-existence of some forced waves.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the existence and nonexistence of traveling wave solution for the nonlocal dispersal predator–prey model with spatiotemporal delay. This model incorporates the Leslie–Gower functional response into the Lotka–Volterra-type system, and both species obey the logistic growth. We explore the existence of traveling wave solution for \(c\ge c^{\star }\) by using the upper-lower solutions and the Schauder’s fixed point theorem. Furthermore, the nonexistence of traveling wave solution for \(c<c^{\star }\) is discussed by means of the comparison principle. The novelty of this work lies in the construction of upper-lower solutions and the proof of the complete continuity of operator.

Abstract:In this paper, we considered an important model describing a two-species predator–prey system with diffusion terms and stage structure. By using the linearized method, we investigated the locally asymptotical stability of the nonnegative equilibria of the system and obtained the locally stable conditions. And by using the approach introduced by Canosa [J. Canosa, On a nonlinear diffusion equation describing population growth, IBM J. Res. Dev. 17 (1973) 307–313] and the method of upper and lower solutions, we studied the existence of traveling wavefronts, connecting the zero solution with the positive equilibrium of the system. Our results show that the traveling wavefronts exist and appear to be monotone. Finally, we given a conclusion to summarize the overall achievements of the work presented in the paper.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with a three-species delayed reaction-diffusion predator-prey system in a bounded domain with Neumann boundary condition. The suffi-cient conditions of stability are found for equilibria of this system by the method of eigenvalue and Lyapunov function, and these conditions imply that delays often restrain stability. One of the main results about stabilities shows that if the intra-specific competitions of the predator and preys dominate their inter-specific inter-action, then the positive equilibria are globally stable. Furthermore, the existence of the traveling wavefront is considered by constructing upper-lower solution and it is derived that this system always has a traveling wave solution connecting the trivial steady state and the positive steady state when the wave speed is relatively big.

Abstract:In this work, the traveling wave solutions for a modified Leslie-Gower predator–prey model under continuous and discrete diffusion cases are investigated respectively. First, the existence of weak traveling wave solutions is shown by Schauder’s fixed point theorem with the help of positive upper and lower solutions, which can remove the singularity of the system with b=0 at u=0 . Then we use two methods, a squeeze method and a Lyapunov function method, to prove that, under additional conditions, the weak traveling wave solutions are actually traveling wave solutions. Finally, by showing the nonexistence of traveling wave solutions, the minimal wave speed is obtained.

Abstract:We study two systems of reaction diffusion equations with monostable or bistable type of nonlinearity and with free boundaries. These systems are used as multi-species competitive model. For two-species models, we prove the existence of a traveling wave solution which consists of two semi-waves intersecting at the free boundary. For three-species models, we also prove the existence of a traveling wave solution which, however, consists of two semi-waves and one compactly supported wave in between, each intersecting with its neighbor at the free boundary.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider a singular diffusive predator–prey model with Beddington–DeAngelis functional response, employing geometric singular perturbation theory and Bendixson's criteria. Our investigation revolves around transforming the reaction–diffusion equation into a multi‐scale four‐dimensional slow–fast system with two different orders of small parameters. Through once singular perturbation analysis, our focus shifts towards exploring the existence of heteroclinic orbits in a three‐dimensional system. We analyze these dynamics through the perspective of the Fisher–KPP equation in two limit cases. In the first case, only the normal to the two‐dimensional slow manifold is unstable. This allows for the deduction of existence of heteroclinic orbits in the three‐dimensional system through investigating the dynamics on the two‐dimensional slow manifold. Consequently, we obtain both monotonic traveling fronts and non‐monotonic fronts with oscillatory tails. In the second case, the normal to the one‐dimensional slow manifold exhibits both stable and unstable directions, then it is impossible to restrict the dynamics of the three‐dimensional system entirely to the slow manifold. Instead, we integrate the slow orbits of the reduced system with the fast orbits of the layer system to construct a singular heteroclinic orbit. According to Fenichel's theorem, we discover the existence of exact heteroclinic orbits of three‐dimensional system and derive the monotonic traveling fronts under weaker parameter conditions. Additionally, we also discuss the nonexistence of traveling fronts. Finally, we demonstrate our theoretical results with numerical simulations.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the traveling wave solutions of delayed reaction-diffusion systems. By using Schauder's fixed point theorem, the existence of traveling wave solutions is reduced to the existence of generalized upper and lower solutions. Using the technique of contracting rectangles, the asymptotic behavior of traveling wave solutions for delayed diffusive systems is obtained. To illustrate our main results, the existence, nonexistence and asymptotic behavior of positive traveling wave solutions of diffusive Lotka-Volterra competition systems with distributed delays are established. The existence of nonmonotone traveling wave solutions of diffusive Lotka-Volterra competition systems is also discussed. In particular, it is proved that if there exists instantaneous self-limitation effect, then the large delays appearing in the intra-specific competitive terms may not affect the existence and asymptotic behavior of traveling wave solutions.

Abstract:Predators can greatly influence the coexistence of competing prey species via direct consumptive effects as well as non-consumptive effects on prey behavior. This makes predicting the consequences of predator introduction on biodiversity and ecological structure very challenging. In this paper, inspired by recent experimental observations (Pringle et al., Nature, 570 (2019) 58–64), we develop a novel mathematical model that couples a competition model with an intraguild predation model via dispersal of intraguild prey driven by intraguild predator-avoidance. We show that a large dispersal rate would lead to the collapse of species coexistence, which is consistent with the reported experimental results. In addition, we show that three modes of species coexistence are possible when the intraguild prey dispersal rate is not too large. Moreover, for a certain range of dispersal rates, a stable interior equilibrium can coexist with a stable positive limit cycle.

Abstract:Competitive exclusion is a phenomenon that often occurs in ecology when two species compete for the same limited resource, while coexistence of predator and prey is required to sustain a predator–prey system. It is of great interest to examine if coexistence of intraguild predator and prey is possible when they are competing for the same resource. In this paper, we study competitive exclusion and coexistence in an intraguild predation model that incorporates species’ mutual interference characterized by a Beddington–DeAngelis functional response. We derive conditions for competitive exclusion and conditions for coexistence of intraguild predator and prey. This is achieved by discussing the existence, local and global stability of all feasible equilibria and uniform persistence. Numerical simulations are carried out to explore effects of intraguild predator interference and intraguild predation strength on the coexistence modes of intraguild predator and prey.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with a cross-diffusion predator–prey system with a free boundary over a one-dimensional habitat. The free boundary shows the spreading front of the prey and predator which implies that the velocity of the expanding front is proportional to the gradients of the prey and predator. By the contraction mapping principle, \(L^{p}\) estimates and Schauder estimates of parabolic equations, the local and global existence and uniqueness of classical solutions are established for this system.

Abstract:An intraguild predator-prey model including prey refuge and hunting cooperation is investigated in this paper. First, for the corresponding ordinary differential equation model, the existence and stability of all equilibria are given, and the existence of Hopf bifurcation, direction and stability of bifurcating periodic solutions are investigated. Then, for partial differential equation model, the diffusion-driven Turing instability is obtained. What is more, the existence and non-existence of the non-constant positive steady state of the reaction-diffusion model are established by the Leray-Schauder degree theory and some priori estimates. Next, some numerical simulations are performed to support analytical results. The results showed that prey refuge can change the stability of model and even have a stabilizing effect on this model, meanwhile the hunting cooperation can make such model without diffusion unstable, but make such model with diffusion stable. Lastly, a brief conclusion is concluded in the last section.

Abstract:We investigate a stage-structured delayed reaction-diffusion model with advection that describes competition between two mature species in water flow. Time delays are incorporated to measure the time lengths from birth to maturity of the populations. We show there exists a finite positive number c∗ that can be characterized as the slowest spreading speed of traveling wave solutions connecting two mono-culture equilibria or connecting a mono-culture with the coexistence equilibrium. The model and mathematical result in [J.F.M. Al-Omari, S.A. Gourley, Stability and travelling fronts in Lotka–Volterra competition models with stage structure, SIAM J. Appl. Math. 63 (2003) 2063–2086] are generalized.

Abstract:This paper presents a reaction-diffusion system modeling interactions of the intraguild predator and prey in an unstirred chemostat, in which the predator can also compete with its prey for one single nutrient resource that can be stored within individuals. Under suitable conditions, we first show that there are at least three steady-state solutions for the full system, a trivial steady-state solution with neither species present, and two semitrivial steady-state solutions with just one of the species. Then we establish that coexistence of the intraguild predator and prey can occur if both of the semitrivial steady-state solutions are invasible by the missing species. Comparing with the system without predation, our numerical simulations show that the introduction of predation in an ecosystem can enhance the coexistence of species. Our mathematical arguments also work for the linear food chain model (top-down predation), in which the top-down predator only feeds on the prey but does not compete for nutrient resource with the prey. In our numerical studies, we also do a comparison of intraguild predation and top-down predation.
