Abstract:This study describes struggles of a man named Desmond Doss in “Hacksaw Ridge” movie. This movie tells about a man in his World War II experiences. Doss rolled as an American pacificist combat medic who was a Seventh-day Adventist Christian. It was directed by Mel Gibson and written by Robert Schenkkan and Andrew Knight. This study has some objectives; to identify the way Doss defends his value in the movie and to identify kinds of struggles that Doss do in defending his value in the movie. In addition, it is to describe three disrespect forms that happen to the main character in “Hacksaw Ridge” Movie. This study is qualitative research because it analyzed the descriptive data based on the conversations in “Hacksaw Ridge” movie. The data are collected from MP4 video and the script of “Hacksaw Ridge” movie. It is found the struggle of Doss that causes a violation on his body, the struggle of Doss that makes all of his rights denied, and the struggle of Doss that makes his way of life affected by other people.

Abstract:War tends to polarise national and global conflicts as encapsulated by the phrase, ‘you are either with us or against us’. There is further danger of knee jerk reactions at such times, including the present, towards unconditionally funding long-term military security hardware and dedicating scarce resources that are badly needed for more benevolent projects, including equitable redistribution of resources, not to mention the challenge to move away from fossil fuels in our climate crisis. These tensions are evident on recognising European dependence on Russian oil and gas, which unfortunately is helping to fund the ongoing Ukrainian war. This paper will explore how a sample of more contemporary wars and national conflicts have been dramatised on film since the pandemic. Focusing specifically on three contrasting approaches to the tragedy of war and its effects on citizens and soldiers: from an insider’s personal response to the massacre in the Balkans during the 1990s in Quo Vadis, Aida? (2020), to the reworked conventional World War One classic All Quiet on the Western Front (2022), before finally coming full circle with the big budget Hollywood celebration of aerial war heroics in the sequel Top Gun: Maverick (2022). Sample textual and contextual analysis will be used to explore how such war narratives have become repurposed, both from an insider soldier’s perspective and also through a rejuvenated cinematic war framework, as contemporary audiences strive to cope with ever-increasing crises and conflicts facing the planet, having recently endured a global pandemic.

Abstract:Mythic expressions of national solidarity in war cinema remain highly controversial, especially from a representational and ideological perspective. Most frequently, Left-leaning critics decode such films by how they naturalize the dominant ideology and forgo critical structural analysis. This process is both exacerbated and at times subverted, depending on how you interpret the final result, by the ironic playfulness of the so-called smart aesthetic. To help tease out some of these attributes as they apply to 9/11 war cinema, this chapter will focus on a number of extremely influential postmodern/smart films beginning with Fight Club (1999) and Forrest Gump (1994), which helped to codify the enigmatic aesthetic form, before carrying out a close reading of Three Kings (1999) and United 93 (2006), which exemplify varying new aesthetics for the war film. Again the study will draw on the proliferation of material on DVD add-ons, which serves to create a direct dialogue between the director and the other creatives and the film audience, alongside other research avenues, to help tease out how these contemporary (war) narratives speak to and for new-generational audiences and can even be read as progressive in various ways.

Abstract:History was always written by the winners. Despite the fact that the history of the War on Terror is relatively new, Hollywood is quick to develop a visual history of the conflict. Hollywood’s excellent realism aesthetics were successful in justifying the goal and method of the “war on terror,” interrupting ongoing reality to influence and reconstruct public memory about what happened. This dissertation will use three awarded and influential case studies: The Hurt Locker, Zero Dark Thirty and American Sniper to demonstrate the fragmentation of film representation, that the film only speaks for “us.” The dissertation aims to uncover the hidden political unawareness behind film representations, the manner in which those films provide limited versions of what happened, and how the films emphasise the self-subjectivity while objectifying the other.

Abstract:Abstract: Crime films have been the most enduringly popular genre since the dawn of sound era in Hollywood. Mob and gangster films are a sub-genre of crime films and deals with the mafia and their organized crime focusing on rise and fall of power. These films primarily have stacks of money, guns, flashy cars, illegal goods, cluster of goons, crime families, and a plot with a central theme coupled with violence. Hollywood gangster films in the 1930’s had liberal ly drawn inspiration from the newspapers and books of the era. Films of gangster genre are strongly driven by themes such as power, loyalty, betrayal, rivalry, morality, revenge, masculinity, materialism etc. Motifs and symbols add structures and contrasts to effectively convey them. Gangster films, when viewed from an American perspective are to achieve the “American dream” that is to be rich and successful with the most power, one can obtain. The Godfather, a 1972 American crime film directed by Francis Ford Coppola exposes the dark side of the American dream. Betrayal, revenge, masculinity, morality, and violence are some of the predominant themes which drive the film The Godfather. Abstract:Confronting mutilated and decaying bodies on a mass scale is both shocking and traumatic. As such, decay as an aesthetic element of the Neogothic genre can be utilised as an analytical tool to explore relations of existence, reality, and authority. This article investigates the Gothic landscape of decay presented in Eric Maria Remarque's All Quiet on the Western Front (1929) as the protagonist is disturbed and haunted by his surroundings and the rotting and decomposing bodies of the dead soldiers of the trenches. Focusing on these encounters with human decay wrought by warfare not only continues Paul's disillusionment with the Great War, it elucidates the manner in which the protagonist's experience shapes and directs his perception of mortality, purpose, and his relations with authority.

Abstract:This article examines how historiographic metafiction challenges traditional narratives of history. The author argues that subverting conventions of narrating the past through irony and a plurality of truths, Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds (2009) can be regarded as historiographic metafiction. Its narratives of the past challenge the traditional History, provide alternate ways of telling history and invite a more meaningful cognitive engagement with history. To explore how the Americanization of the Holocaust sheds light on American racism, the author focuses on the figure of the savage Native American in the film and examines how Native Americans are brought into play through a plot that mixes up the histories of American settlers, African-Americans, Jews, Frenchmen, Germans and Italians and how the film screens Native Americans in the sight of psychoanalytic theorist Kaja Silverman's terms of the look, the screen, and the gaze. I argue that the screening of savage Native Americans is in a constant process of renewal and the image of Native Americans is ironic rather than simply stereotypical, which contests dominant Hollywood representations of Native Americans either as ignoble savage or noble savage and reveals unheeded history.

Abstract:Clint Eastwood's American Sniper ( Citation 2014 ) and Alba Sotorra's Game Over (2015) explore the inculcating pull of pop myths on soldiers. Eastwood's biopic focuses on Chris Kyle, American military history's most lethal sniper. Sotorra's documentary Game Over considers Djalal, an Iranian Catalan youth who moves from being an America-idolizing gamer to a sniper in Afghanistan. Initially, they see themselves as Western cowboys and perfect soldiers. War, however, leaves them disillusioned and traumatized. Via distinct generic formats (documentary v. feature film) and nationally determined political frameworks (US v. Spain), they ask: can mythologies fueling the post-9/11 war machine empty it of its force? Mobilizing postcolonial, disability, and trauma studies, this comparative analysis theorizes how objects of soft power can both harden a soldier's mind and liberate it from the battlefield's thrall. Ultimately, the article reveals contrasting, potentially limited strategies subjects across cultures deploy to break the hold of American visions of power.

Abstract:The use of hard-core sex and brutal violence in films such as Antichrist , Romance and Irreversible has been branded by many as an unsophisticated attempt to attract audiences. These accusations of gimmickry have been directed towards a range of extreme art films, however they have rarely been explored in detail. This book therefore seeks to investigate the validity of these claims by considering the extent to which these often infamous sequences of extremity inform the commercial identity of the film. Through close textual analysis of various paratexts, the book examines how sleeve designs, blurbs, and special features manage these extreme reputations, and the extent to which they exploit the supposed value of extremity. The book positions the tangible home video product as a bearer of meaning, capable of defining the public persona of the film. The book explores the ways home video artefacts communicate to both highbrow and lowbrow audiences by drawing from contradicting marketing traditions, as well as examining the means through which they breach long-standing taste distinctions. Including case studies from both art cinema and exploitation cinema – such as Cannibal Holocaust , Salò, Or the 120 Days of Sodom , Weekend and Antichrist – the book explores the complicated dichotomies between these cinematic traditions, offering a fluid history of extreme art cinema while challenging existing accounts of the field. Ultimately, the book argues that extremity – far from being a simple marketing tool – is a complex and multifaceted commercial symbol.

Abstract:Abstract The relation between war and cinema, propaganda and cinema is a most intriguing area, located at the intersection of media studies, history and film aesthetics. A truly tragic moment in human history, the First World War was also the first to be fought before film cameras. And while in the field, airborne reconnaissance became cinematic (Virilio), domestic propaganda occupied the screen of the newly emergent national cinemas, only to see its lucid message challenged and even subverted by the fast-evolving language of cinema. Part one of this paper looks at three non-fiction films, released in 1916: Battle of Somme, With Our Heroes at the Somme ( Bei unseren Helden an der Somme ) and Battle of Somme ( La Bataille de la Somme ), as paradigmatic propaganda takes on the eponymous historical battle from British, German and French points of view. Part two analyses two war-time Hollywood melodramas, David Wark Griffith’s Hearts of the World (1918) and Allen Holubar’s The Heart of Humanity (1919), and explains the longevity of the former with the powerful “text effect” of the authentic wartime footage included. Thus, while these WWI propaganda works do validate Virilio’s ideas of the integral connections between technology, war and cinema, and between cinema and propaganda, they also herald the emancipation of post-WWI film language.
Reanimating the Master Narrative: How They Shall Not Grow Old Curates the Perception of Common Truth through CGI Animation

Abstract:Animation, Volume 17, Issue 3, Page 271-285, November 2022. In 2014, the British Imperial War Museum (IWM) contracted New Zealand-based filmmaker, Peter Jackson, to use their audio and video archives to create a media-based memorial to the men who served in World War 1. The documentary film, They Shall Not Grow Old (TSNGO), released in 2018, was the product of this collaboration. Jackson took on the project to better understand his own grandfather's experience as a soldier at the Battle of the Somme. Weta Digital Studios, founded by Jackson, converted the standard WWI newsreel footage into a product that aligned to a modern audience's perceptual sense of truth. Weta Digital redrew and colored each frame, a process that is strikingly similar to CGI animation. Curiously, Jackson, a filmmaker whose career has hinged on his ability to collaborate with CGI animators, does not describe his new historical film treatment as animation. This article first argues that TSNGO is following in the footsteps of previous CGI animated films, in particular those that have re-edited historical footage, but more importantly asks: why would Jackson prefer to keep the word 'animation' out of the discussion about his new historical documentary? The answer to this question leads us to a critical discussion about how animation has become both the preserver and 're-imaginer' of existing historical archives.
War drama as a living reality

Abstract:Since 2014, the Russian aggression in Ukraine has prompted filmmakers to master a new genre of war drama to tell the stories of those who serve in the Ukrainian army or the territorial defense, as well as those who contribute to the war effort as volunteers. The article discusses Ukrainian war drama films: Cyborgs. Heroes Don’t Die, Call Sign Banderas, Mother of Apostles, Ilovaysk 2014. Donbas Battalion, Sniper. The White Raven. These films integrate war drama with other genres such as detective stories, adventure films, and psychological drama. They also refer to some archetypal themes and conflicts in order to frame the current experience of the war. However, it will be argued that these films do not simply reuse the existing genre models, but complicate them. They refresh war drama by prioritizing the concrete experience of the ongoing war against Russian aggression over the genre conventions. Ukrainian war drama shows not a game of war but the truth of war. It tells the real stories of the bravery of ordinary people who fight against Russian aggression.

Abstract:This research examines the construction of the enemy in Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds (2009) as postmodern enemy through the portrayal of the Nazi. Applying Derrida's deconstruction theory to see how Hollywood cinematic convention is being deconstructed, the analysis shows that the Nazi are being deconstructed through the following construction: 1) wearing distinctive outfit, 2) being dehumanized as evil, 3) having different purpose from the hero, 4)being on the losing side, and 5) being racially different. The Nazi shows some qualities of not being stereotypical enemy: they are depicted to show patriotism, loyalty, and compassion. The blurry characteristics between hero and enemy shows postmodernity.

Abstract:Abstract Completing his trilogy of adaptations of Shakespearean tragedies, Indian director Vishal Bhardwaj’s film Haider (2014) tackles Hamlet. A generic fusion of realist drama, Bollywood movie, and espionage thriller, the film intersects the Elizabethan source text’s revenge plot with intertextual references to journalist Basharat Peer’s contemporary war memoir Curfewed Nights (2011), detailing the realities in insurgency-torn Kashmir in the 1990s. Taking its cue from the film’s controversial reception, which runs the gamut from censorship, appraisals, and criticism that Indian film does not need the ‘crutch’ of Hamlet to claim attention, this article explores questions about border-crossing, violence, and reconciliation raised on the level of form and content. Haider presents an adaptation of not one but two source texts: one ‘global’ and one ‘local’. The result, this article argues, is astonishingly harmonious and the contested metaphors of adaptation theory and global Shakespeare studies, such as ‘appropriation’ or ‘indigenization’, apply less to it than that of a transcultural ‘contact zone’ (Pratt, Mary Louise. Imperial Eyes. Travel Writing and Transculturation, 2nd. ed. London and New York: Routledge, 2008) and of a ‘crossmapping’ (Bronfen, Elisabeth. Crossmappings. On Visual Culture. London and New York: I.B. Tauris, 2018). By placing greater emphasis on communality and having the ending turn from revenge to forgiveness, Haider interrogates the transcultural appeal of Hamlet, drawing attention to histories of violent conflict. It also reveals a revisionist agenda that captures both hidden political realities and a haunting refiguration of Shakespeare.
Professionalized Heroism? Comparing US, UK, and Norwegian War Decorations From the War in Afghanistan

Abstract:Armed Forces &Society, Ahead of Print. This article compares the awarding of the three highest war decorations in Norway, the United Kingdom, and the United States for actions undertaken in Afghanistan between 2001 and 2018 to examine contemporary expressions of military heroism. The comparison shows Norway tends to award leadership, and gaining respect from prestigious allies, whereas the United States and the United Kingdom tend to award individual acts of courage, involving great risk to one's own life. In the case of the United States, these acts were predominantly aimed toward rescuing fellow soldiers, whereas the U.K. cases were aimed toward defeating an enemy. The Norwegian war decoration regime, in which the highest decorations are detached from the traditional military value of sacrifice, illustrates that while professional forces may act heroically, heroism, contrary to war decoration regimes, cannot be professionalized.

Abstract:Abstract The English word, ‘scar,’ has roots in several languages: Latin (eschara), Old French (escharre), Greek (έσχάρα or eskhara), Middle English (skar) and Old Norse (skarð). Ancient civilizations such as the Romans, Greeks and Egyptians viewed scars in a sacred light, as scars were often linked to ritualistic practices. The Ancient Egyptians even employed scarring as a mark of authentication, to be displayed and observed. In Ancient Rome, the symbology of scarring was a practical element in ratifying democratic office after the fall of the Tarquin kings; scars demonstrated that these politicians were not godly as kings wished to be. If scars were to be treated in ancient times it was for symptomatic relief of pain or itching, rather than for aesthetic reasons. In more recent times, society has grown less accepting of facial imperfections and scarring. One example we often see is how scarring is portrayed on screen, highlighting the dichotomy between good and evil. There is a statistically higher preponderance for scarring in antagonistic characters vs. protagonists. Some movies go as far as to name the villain after their imperfections, such as Scar in The Lion King, and Al Pacino’s Scarface. When the ‘good guys’ are shown to have scarring it typically highlights their virtuousness, and can underpin an image of bravery, such as Harry Potter’s famous forehead scar. Recently, films have been criticized by their use of facial scarring on villains. In the James Bond film No Time To Die, the villain played by Rami Malek once again displays facial disfigurement. This was met with backlash for the villain cliché, resulting in the British Film Institute no longer funding films with facially scarred villains from 2018. Scars are often used as a shorthand for villainy, repeatedly exaggerated to depict a character flaw or convey an element of disquiet. Perpetuating these negative ideas will serve to bolster unsavoury views, foster prejudices and deepen the psychological impact that scarring can have. We now have various treatments that can be utilized to improve the appearance of scars, including medicated dressings, corticosteroid injection, laser therapy and surgery. However, scarring cannot be cured and so we must endeavour to promote a more accepting landscape for patients struggling with distressing scars.

Abstract:The article studies the phenomenon of true and supposed humanity in foreign historical films of the beginning of the 21st century. The reason for addressing the topic was the appearance of films devoted to the images of an odious personality and viewed in a new (as opposed to old films about tyrants, such as Caligula by T. Brass; Great Britain, USA, Italy, 1979) humane perspective. Such are the films about Nero (Nero, directed by P. Markus; Italy, Germany, Great Britain, France, Tunisia, 2004), Hitler (Downfall, Germany, France, Italy; directed by O. Hirschbiegel, 2004), which have already outlined a perspective in development, crowned by a film about the family of a death camp commandant (The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, directed by M. Herman; Great Britain, USA, 2008). The focus here is on the reinterpretation of the main images in the context of revealing some hidden personal features of the protagonists. For this purpose, the evil they have caused is left behind the scenes, and the viewer’s attention is focused on simple “human” emotions: Nero tearfully regrets his crimes, Hitler suffers before committing a suicide, the concentration camp commandant and his wife are horrified by the disappearance of their eight-year-old son in the death camp. By disguising the true nature of the personalities, film creators shift attention from their criminal activities to their “virtuous” everyday life not concerning the war and the military affairs. As a result, the works of art in question reinterpret the established characteristics of recognizable large-scale villains and transform them into ordinary people requiring sympathy. But, contrary to such a free interpretation of humanity, the authors of the article present a different perspective on it, where the studied phenomenon acts as a versatile-heroic one. Therefore, the aim of the article is to specify the phenomenon on the basis of two opposing matrices: 1) the development of humanistic traditions — “exceeding humanity in man” (G.-H. Gadamer), 2) distorting historical facts for the sake of artificial transformation of the representative of evil into a humane one.

Abstract:In contemporary studies in war history, the study of the specifics of the discourse in question is a fairly popular area of research. The evolution of the process of visualisation and mythologisation of World War II in American cinematography is analysed using the methods of historical imagology. It is hard to grasp the peculiarities of the evolution of and interaction between US cinema and propaganda without exploring the basic principles, methods, mechanisms, and tools of this process. The main research goal is to establish the features and methods of propaganda used in the film Wake Island. Wake Island combines old and new methods of war propaganda and visualisation. Wake Island is a good example of the early evolution of both US state propaganda through cinema and the development of the visual image of World War II, which was influenced by both the social mythology associated with the US historical past and foreign policy failures, such as the collapse of US-Japan negotiations in 1941, the attack on Pearl-Harbor, and the defeat in the Battle of Guam in December 1941, as well as socio-economic changes in the country. The film Wake Island created a new image of the Marine: a universal hero for a series of films from 1942–1945.
