Abstract:In the paper we present an algorithm called Game Rank, modified from Page rank and HITS, to evaluate the pitching and batting ability for players in Major League Baseball (MLB) with a network perspective. The model could also be easily expanded and applied on any network that has multiple factors interacting with each other, to quantify the vertex's significance. Then, we evaluate the algorithm by comparing its results to ESPN Ratings, a popular baseball rating method. Our algorithm achieves similar or better results with a way simpler model. Furthermore, relevant analysis is also performed for our MLB data network, with a few interesting conclusions drawn, like (a) players are getting closer in their skills, (b) good pitchers bats better than normal ones. What's more, we have wrapped up the whole system as a working website, called MLB Illustrator (http://mlbillustrator.com), to let users interact with the data and network itself, making the traditional baseball statistics analysis based on tables and simple graphs evolve into intuitive visualized network analysis. At last, we present a series of examples where Game Rank model can be used, to prove that our model is extensive and widely applicable. Our contribution lies in the following aspects: (a) we provide a simple model to rank the nodes in networks with multiple indicators interplaying with each other, which expands the functionality of Page Rank, and is widely applicable, (b) we initially apply the network theory on the baseball network, handle a set of analysis on it, and have some interesting findings, (c) we provide a powerful method to rank baseball players which is stronger than ESPN Ratings in several aspects.
A PageRank Model for Player Performance Assessment in Basketball, Soccer and Hockey

Abstract:In the sports of soccer, hockey and basketball the most commonly used statistics for player performance assessment are divided into two categories: offensive statistics and defensive statistics. However, qualitative assessments of playmaking (for example making "smart" passes) are difficult to quantify. It would be advantageous to have available a single statistic that can emphasize the flow of a game, rewarding those players who initiate and contribute to successful plays more. In this paper we will examine a model based on Google's PageRank. Other papers have explored ranking teams, coaches, and captains but here we construct ratings and rankings for individual members on both teams that emphasizes initiating and partaking in successful plays and forcing defensive turnovers. For a soccer/hockey/basketball game, our model assigns a node for each of the n players who play in the game and a "goal node". Arcs between player nodes indicate sport-specific situations (including passes, turnovers, scoring, fouls, out-of-bounds, play-stoppages, turnovers, missed shots, defensive plays etc.), tailored for each sport. As well, some additional arcs are added in to ensure that the associated matrix is primitive and hence there is a unique PageRank vector. The PageRank vector of the associated matrix is used to rank the players of the game. To illustrate the model, data was taken from nine NBA games played between 2014-2016. Many of the top-ranked players (in the model) in a given game had some of the most impressive traditional stat-lines. However, from the model there were surprises where some players who had impressive stat-lines had lower ranks, and others who had less impressive stat-lines had higher ranks. Overall, the model's ranking and ratings reflect more the flow of the game compared to traditional sports statistics.
A Parameterized Centrality Metric for Network Analysis

Abstract:A variety of metrics have been proposed to measure the relative importance of nodes in a network. One of these, alpha-centrality [Bonacich, 2001], measures the number of attenuated paths that exist between nodes. We introduce a normalized version of this metric and use it to study network structure, specifically, to rank nodes and find community structure of the network. Specifically, we extend the modularity-maximization method [Newman and Girvan, 2004] for community detection to use this metric as the measure of node connectivity. Normalized alpha-centrality is a powerful tool for network analysis, since it contains a tunable parameter that sets the length scale of interactions. By studying how rankings and discovered communities change when this parameter is varied allows us to identify locally and globally important nodes and structures. We apply the proposed method to several benchmark networks and show that it leads to better insight into network structure than alternative methods.

Exploring the raison d'etre behind metric selection in network analysis: a systematic review

Abstract:Network analysis is a useful tool to analyse the interactions and structure of graphs that represent the relationships among entities, such as sectors within an urban system. Connecting entities in this way is vital in understanding the complexity of the modern world, and how to navigate these complexities during an event. However, the field of network analysis has grown rapidly since the 1970s to produce a vast array of available metrics that describe different graph properties. This diversity allows network analysis to be applied across myriad research domains and contexts, however widespread applications have produced polysemic metrics. Challenges arise in identifying which method of network analysis to adopt, which metrics to choose, and how many are suitable. This paper undertakes a structured review of literature to provide clarity on raison d'etre behind metric selection and suggests a way forward for applied network analysis. It is essential that future studies explicitly report the rationale behind metric choice and describe how the mathematics relates to target concepts and themes. An exploratory metric analysis is an important step in identifying the most important metrics and understanding redundant ones. Finally, where applicable, one should select an optimal number of metrics that describe the network both locally and globally, so as to understand the interactions and structure as holistically as possible. Abstract:This paper describes the applications of network methods for understanding interaction within members of sport <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://teams.We" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> analyze the interaction of batsmen in International Cricket matches. We generate batting partnership network (BPN) for different teams and determine the exact values of clustering coefficient, average degree, average shortest path length of the networks and compare them with the Erd\text{ö}s-R\text{é}nyi model. We observe that the networks display small-world behavior and are disassortative in nature. We find that most connected batsman is not necessarily the most central and most central players are not necessarily the one with high batting averages. We study the community structure of the BPNs and identify each player's role based on inter-community and intra-community links. We observe that {\it Sir DG Bradman}, regarded as the best batsman in Cricket history does not occupy the central position in the network $-$ the so-called connector hub. We extend our analysis to quantify the performance, relative importance and effect of removing a player from the team, based on different centrality scores.

Abstract:In this study, we sorted out the research hotspots in sports science by bibliometric method and also used social network analysis to explore the relationship between knowledge networks and their scientific performance. We found 38 high-frequency keywords with obvious curricular nature or classical direction of sports science research and 4 high-frequency research groups. The topics of hotspots covered the secondary disciplines of sports science: physical education and training, national traditional sports, sports human science, and sports humanities and sociology. However, sports human science research is less; therefore, accelerating the research of sports human science is the focus of future research. Meanwhile, we use social network structure analysis (i.e., centrality, clustering coefficient, PageRank, and structural holes) to study the relationship between knowledge elements in knowledge networks and their scientific performance. In addition to betweenness centrality, the closeness centrality, clustering coefficient, and structural holes of knowledge elements are significantly and positively related to their influence. In the relationship between knowledge elements and productivity, betweenness centrality and closeness centrality show significant positive correlations, and clustering coefficient and structural hole show significant negative correlations. Therefore, knowledge networks can be used to predict the scientific performance of knowledge elements.

Abstract:We summarise popular methods used for skill rating in competitive sports, along with their inferential paradigms and introduce new approaches based on sequential Monte Carlo and discrete hidden Markov models. We advocate for a state-space model perspective, wherein players' skills are represented as time-varying, and match results serve as observed quantities. We explore the steps to construct the model and the three stages of inference: filtering, smoothing and parameter estimation. We examine the challenges of scaling up to numerous players and matches, highlighting the main approximations and reductions which facilitate statistical and computational efficiency. We additionally compare approaches in a realistic experimental pipeline that can be easily reproduced and extended with our open-source Python package, <a class="link-external link-https" href="https://github.com/SamDuffield/abile" rel="external noopener nofollow">this https URL</a>.

Opinion-Based Centrality in Multiplex Networks: A Convex Optimization Approach

Abstract:Most people simultaneously belong to several distinct social networks, in which their relations can be different. They have opinions about certain topics, which they share and spread on these networks, and are influenced by the opinions of other persons. In this paper, we build upon this observation to propose a new nodal centrality measure for multiplex networks. Our measure, called Opinion centrality, is based on a stochastic model representing opinion propagation dynamics in such a network. We formulate an optimization problem consisting in maximizing the opinion of the whole network when controlling an external influence able to affect each node individually. We find a mathematical closed form of this problem, and use its solution to derive our centrality measure. According to the opinion centrality, the more a node is worth investing external influence, and the more it is central. We perform an empirical study of the proposed centrality over a toy network, as well as a collection of real-world networks. Our measure is generally negatively correlated with existing multiplex centrality measures, and highlights different types of nodes, accordingly to its definition.

Abstract:Team members typically make unequal – and, from the outside, unquantifiable – contributions toward team goals. Acknowledging this challenge, managers frequently use peer-ratings to gain an insider perspective of individuals’ performance. To date, peer-rated performance has overwhelmingly been operationalized using simple aggregation models, whereby the mean of multiple ratings reflects a single composite score (ratings are considered interchangeable). This approach, however, overlooks teams’ idiosyncratic interactional patterns and, consequently, discounts the possibility of meaningful variance in the informational utility captured across raters. Addressing this limitation, we integrate information processing and social network theories to advance a novel framework for understanding within-team peer-ratings. Specifically, we posit that members’ network centrality represents their access to performance- related information, which is evidenced by systematic rating differences between central and peripheral team members. Next, using the empirically robust conscientiousness-performance relationship as a benchmark, we present results suggesting that central member ratings are also more valid performance indicators than peripheral ratings. Finally, we find that the information advantage associated with member centrality is contingent upon team-level network structures; high centralization broadens the informational gap between central and peripheral members, whereas increased network density decreases the gap.

Abstract:Pattern analysis is a widely researched topic in team sports performance analysis, using information theory as a conceptual framework. Bayesian methods are also used in this research field, but the association between these two is being developed. The aim of this paper is to present new mathematical concepts that are based on information and probability theory and can be applied to network analysis in Team Sports. These results are based on the transition matrices of the Markov chain, associated with the adjacency matrices of a network with n nodes and allowing for a more robust analysis of the variability of interactions in team sports. The proposed models refer to individual and collective rates and indexes of total variability between players and teams as well as the overall passing capacity of a network, all of which are demonstrated in the UEFA 2020/2021 Champions League Final.

Abstract:Abstract In this paper, we present a new model for ranking sports teams. Our model uses all scoring data from all games to produce a functional rating by the method of least squares. The functional rating can be interpreted as a team average point differential adjusted for strength of schedule. Using two team’s functional ratings we can predict the expected point differential at any time in the game. We looked at three variations of our model accounting for home-court advantage in different ways. We use the 2018–2019 NCAA Division 1 men’s college basketball season to test the models and determined that home-court advantage is statistically important but does not differ between teams.

Abstract:In sports, there is a constant effort to improve metrics which assess player ability, but there has been almost no effort to quantify and compare existing metrics. Any individual making a management, coaching, or gambling decision is quickly overwhelmed with hundreds of statistics. We address this problem by proposing a set of "meta-metrics" which can be used to identify the metrics that provide the most unique, reliable, and useful information for decision-makers. Specifically, we develop methods to evalute metrics based on three criteria: 1) stability: does the metric measure the same thing over time 2) discrimination: does the metric differentiate between players and 3) independence: does the metric provide new information? Our methods are easy to implement and widely applicable so they should be of interest to the broader sports community. We demonstrate our methods in analyses of both NBA and NHL metrics. Our results indicate the most reliable metrics and highlight how they should be used by sports analysts. The meta-metrics also provide useful insights about how to best construct new metrics which provide independent and reliable information about athletes.
Social Centrality using Network Hierarchy and Community Structure

Abstract:Several centrality measures have been formulated to quantify the notion of 'importance' of actors in social networks. Current measures scrutinize either local or global connectivity of the nodes and have been found to be inadequate for social networks. Ignoring hierarchy and community structure, which are inherent in all human social networks, is the primary cause of this inadequacy. Positional hierarchy and embeddedness of an actor in the community are intuitively crucial determinants of his importance. The theory of social capital asserts that an actor's importance is derived from his position in network hierarchy as well as from the potential to mobilize resources through intra-community (bonding) and inter-community (bridging) ties. Inspired by this idea, we propose a novel centrality measure SC (Social Centrality) for actors in social networks. Our measure accounts for - i) an individual's propensity to socialize, and ii) his connections within and outside the community. These two factors are suitably aggregated to produce social centrality score. Comparative analysis of SC measure with classical and recent centrality measures using large public networks shows that it consistently produces a more realistic ranking of nodes. The inference is based on the available ground truth for each tested networks. Extensive analysis of rankings delivered by SC measure and mapping with known facts in well-studied networks justifies its effectiveness in diverse social networks. Scalability evaluation of SC measure justifies its efficacy for real-world large networks.

Abstract:This study's main objective is to analyse the relationship between network-based centrality measures and physical demands in elite football players. Thirty-six matches from La Liga, the Spanish league, were analysed in the 2017/18 season. The analysis of networks formed by team players passing the ball included: degree-prestige (DP), degree-centrality (DC), betweenness-centrality (BC), page-rank (PRP) and closeness-centrality (IRCC). A video-based system was used for analysing total distance (TDpos) and distance run >21Km/h (TD21pos) when the team was in possession of the ball. A magnitude-based inference and correlation analysis were applied. There were different styles of play, team-A was characterized by greater ball circulation (e.g. higher values of DP, DC, BC and IRCC) while team-B used a more direct game (lower values in centrality-metrics except with PRP). Furthermore, TDpos was higher in team-A than in team-B, but those differences disappeared for TD21pos between teams with the exception of the forwards. Finally, the correlation among centrality measures and physical performance were higher in team-B. Coaches could identify the key opponents and players who are linked to them, allowing to adjust performance strategies. Furthermore, interaction patterns between teammates can be used to identify preferential paths of cooperation and to take decisions regarding these relations in order to optimize team performance.

Team Sports Performance Analysed Through the Lens of Social Network Theory: Implications for Research and Practice

Abstract:This paper discusses how social network analyses and graph theory can be implemented in team sports performance analyses to evaluate individual (micro) and collective (macro) performance data, and how to use this information for designing practice tasks. Moreover, we briefly outline possible limitations of social network studies and provide suggestions for future research. Instead of cataloguing discrete events or player actions, it has been argued that researchers need to consider the synergistic interpersonal processes emerging between teammates in competitive performance environments. Theoretical assumptions on team coordination prompted the emergence of innovative, theoretically driven methods for assessing collective team sport behaviours. Here, we contribute to this theoretical and practical debate by re-conceptualising sports teams as complex social networks. From this perspective, players are viewed as network nodes, connected through relevant information variables (e.g. a ball-passing action), sustaining complex patterns of interaction between teammates (e.g. a ball-passing network). Specialised tools and metrics related to graph theory could be applied to evaluate structural and topological properties of interpersonal interactions of teammates, complementing more traditional analysis methods. This innovative methodology moves beyond the use of common notation analysis methods, providing a richer understanding of the complexity of interpersonal interactions sustaining collective team sports performance. The proposed approach provides practical applications for coaches, performance analysts, practitioners and researchers by establishing social network analyses as a useful approach for capturing the emergent properties of interactions between players in sports teams.

Characterizing the importances (i.e., centralities) of nodes in social, biological, and technological networks is a core topic in both network analysis and data science. We present a linear-algebraic framework that generalizes eigenvector-based centralities, including PageRank and hub/authority scores, to provide a common framework for two popular classes of multilayer networks: multiplex networks (which have layers that encode different types of relationships) and temporal networks (in which relationships change over time). Our approach involves the study of joint, marginal, and conditional "supracentralities" that one can calculate from the dominant eigenvector of a supracentrality matrix [Taylor et al., Multiscale Model. Simul., 15 (2017), pp. 537--574; [110] in this paper], which couples centrality matrices that are associated with individual network layers. We extend this prior work (which was restricted to temporal networks with layers that are coupled by adjacent-in-time coupling) by allowing the layers to be coupled through a (possibly asymmetric) interlayer-adjacency matrix , where the entry encodes the coupling between layers and . Our framework provides a unifying foundation for centrality analysis of multiplex and temporal networks, and it also illustrates a complicated dependency of the supracentralities on the topology and weights of interlayer coupling. By scaling by an interlayer-coupling strength and developing a singular perturbation theory for the limits of weak ( ) and strong ( ) coupling, we also reveal an interesting dependence of supracentralities on the right and left dominant eigenvectors of . We provide additional theoretical and practical insights by applying our framework to two empirical data sets: a multiplex network of airline transportation in Europe and a temporal network that encodes the graduation and hiring of mathematical scientists at United States universities.

Abstract:Network analysis is an important tool in understanding the behavior of complex systems of interacting entities. However, due to the limitations of data gathering technologies, some interactions might be missing from the network model. This is a ubiquitous problem in all domains that use network analysis, from social networks to hyper-linked web networks to biological networks. Consequently, an important question in analyzing networks is to understand how increasing the noise level (i.e. percentage of missing edges) affects different network parameters. In this paper we evaluate the effect of noise on community scoring and centrality-based parameters with respect to two different aspects of network analysis: (i) sensitivity, that is how the parameter value changes as edges are removed and (ii) reliability in the context of message spreading, that is how the time taken to broadcast a message changes as edges are removed. Our experiments on synthetic and real-world networks and three different noise models demonstrate that for both the aspects over all networks and all noise models, permanence qualifies as the most effective metric. For the sensitivity experiments closeness centrality is a close second. For the message spreading experiments, closeness and betweenness centrality based initiator selection closely competes with permanence. This is because permanence has a dual characteristic where the cumulative permanence over all vertices is sensitive to noise but the ids of the top-rank vertices, which are used to find seeds during message spreading remain relatively stable under noise.

Abstract:Navigability is a distinctive features of graphs associated with artificial or natural systems whose primary goal is the transportation of information or goods. We say that a graph $\mathcal{G}$ is navigable when an agent is able to efficiently reach any target node in $\mathcal{G}$ by means of local routing decisions. In a social network navigability translates to the ability of reaching an individual through personal contacts. Graph navigability is well-studied, but a fundamental question is still open: why are some individuals more likely than others to be reached via short, friend-of-a-friend, communication chains? In this article we answer the question above by proposing a novel centrality metric called the potential gain, which, in an informal sense, quantifies the easiness at which a target node can be reached. We define two variants of the potential gain, called the geometric and the exponential potential gain, and present fast algorithms to compute them. The geometric and the potential gain are the first instances of a novel class of composite centrality metrics, i.e., centrality metrics which combine the popularity of a node in $\mathcal{G}$ with its similarity to all other nodes. As shown in previous studies, popularity and similarity are two main criteria which regulate the way humans seek for information in large networks such as Wikipedia. We give a formal proof that the potential gain of a node is always equivalent to the product of its degree centrality (which captures popularity) and its Katz centrality (which captures similarity).

Abstract:Finding talents, often among the people already hired, is an endemic challenge for organizations. The social networking revolution, with online tools like Linkedin, made possible to make explicit and accessible what we perceived, but not used, for thousands of years: the exact position and ranking of a person in a network of professional and personal connections. To search and mine where and how an employee is positioned on a global skill network will enable organizations to find unpredictable sources of knowledge, innovation and know-how. This data richness and hidden knowledge demands for a multidimensional and multiskill approach to the network ranking problem. Multidimensional networks are networks with multiple kinds of relations. To the best of our knowledge, no network-based ranking algorithm is able to handle multidimensional networks and multiple rankings over multiple attributes at the same time. In this paper we propose such an algorithm, whose aim is to address the node multi-ranking problem in multidimensional networks. We test our algorithm over several real world networks, extracted from DBLP and the Enron email corpus, and we show its usefulness in providing less trivial and more flexible rankings than the current state of the art algorithms.
Analyzing complex networks through correlations in centrality measurements

Abstract:Many real world systems can be expressed as complex networks of interconnected nodes. It is frequently important to be able to quantify the relative importance of the various nodes in the network, a task accomplished by defining some centrality measures, with different centrality definitions stressing different aspects of the network. It is interesting to know to what extent these different centrality definitions are related for different networks. In this work, we study the correlation between pairs of a set of centrality measures for different real world networks and two network models. We show that the centralities are in general correlated, but with stronger correlations for network models than for real networks. We also show that the strength of the correlation of each pair of centralities varies from network to network. Taking this fact into account, we propose the use of a centrality correlation profile, consisting of the values of the correlation coefficients between all pairs of centralities of interest, as a way to characterize networks. Using the yeast protein interaction network as an example we show also that the centrality correlation profile can be used to assess the adequacy of a network model as a representation of a given real network.
