Abstract:Vortex beams carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) are extensively studied owing to its potential to expand channel capacity of microwave and optical communication. By utilizing the Pancharatnam-Berry phase concept, an ultrawideband single-layer metasurface is proposed to realize the conversion from incident plane waves to reflected vortex beams covering a considerable bandwidth from 6.75 to 21.85 GHz (>105%). An equivalent circuit model combined with broadband phase shift network is developed to effectively design the meta-atoms in metasurface. It is the first time to design wideband metasurfaces with the phase-based characteristics. To verify the proposed model, some deformed square loop meta-atoms are proposed to construct the metasurfaces with broadband OAM characteristic. Moreover, the vortex beams with the integer (l = -3), fractional (l = -1.5), and high-order (l = -10) OAM mode are generated. Based on an OAM spectral analysis, the mode purity of the generated vortex waves is discussed in detail. The experimental results achieve a good agreement with those obtained from the simulation, thus proving the effectiveness and practicability of the proposed method.

Abstract:The purpose of this study is to generate a broadband high-performance vortex wave. By using the waveguide theory and the grating vectors model, a broadband quasi-continuous metasurface is proposed to generate the l=±2 vortex beams with a measuring mode purity of 0.68 operating from 9 GHz to 19 GHz. In compare with previous designs, this metasurface provide a significant bandwidth improvement with continuous upper surface feature. The measured far-field patterns have a good agreement with those obtained from the simulation. This work offers a useful route of producing high-purity orbital angular momentum waves.
Orbital Angular Momentum Generation Using A Bi-Layered Complementary Metasurface with A High Conversion Efficiency

Abstract:Summary form only given. A bi-layered complementary metasurface composed of subwavelength scatterers are proposed for orbital angular momentum (OAM) generation at microwave frequencies. It converts a circularly polarized plane wave to a transmitted helical wave carrying the OAM of desired orders with a conversion efficiency of 75%. Our design has low profile and is easy to fabricate, considering the unit cell size, substrate thickness and number of printed-circuit-board layers. By mathematical derivation, we conclude that if the co-transmission coefficients of a scatterer in the Carteisian basis satisfying T xx = -T yy while the cross-transmission coefficients are zero, an OAM of arbitrary orders can be introduced in the transmitted waves by rotating the scatterers. In the design process, we use an equivalent circuit model to describe the behaviour of the proposed scatterer. The fundamental resonance of the scatterer is considered and examined. Simulation results based on circuit model and full-wave simulation show a good agreement with each other. For the whole metasurface simulation, usually, it is very time consuming due to the complicated fine structure and large simulation domain. Therefore, according to equivalence principle, we replace the complementary scatterers by equivalent magnetic dipole sources. We calculate the electromagnetic response from the equivalent sources with the help of the magnetic dyadic Green's function. The theoretical model largely reduces the simulation time and facilitates a fast and simple engineering realization. Finally, full-wave simulations are done to validate the proposed model. Two metasurfaces that can generate OAM of order 2 and 4 based on the proposed model are simulated. Both the near- and far-field patterns are explored and characteristics of OAM are confirmed.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a reflectarray metasurface to generate two modes of orbital angular momentum (OAM) in two orthogonal directions of polarization. The metasurface comprises dual-bowtie elements of various sizes. By varying the size of the geometry, the element can simultaneously alter the phases of reflection of both polarizations. In the design, equivalent circuit models of the unit cell in both the orthogonal direction and the direction of excitation are built and discussed. These models are used to explain the results of the simulation and can help accelerate the optimization process when designing other reflective metasurfaces. Both the first- and second-order metasurface reflectarrays were simulated and measured at 10 GHz, and the results confirmed that different OAM modes can be generated in two orthogonal directions of polarization. Compared with the prevalent design, the proposed one is more compact as it has only one layer and does not require active components. We also simulated and measured the first-order metasurface reflectarray at multiple frequencies, and the results from 9.2 to 10.5 GHz show that it can generate the two polarized OAMs independently in broadband.

Abstract:An orbital angular momentum (OAM) detection approach at microwave band is proposed. A transmittance function is exploited to model a transmissive metasurface. Then the metasurface is designed to convert an OAM wave to multiple waves, only one of which is gaussian. The radiation direction of the gaussian wave is distinguishable according to the order of incident OAM. Consequently, by locating the gaussian wave, the incident OAM can be conveniently determined. We use a simple field source to simulate the incident OAM wave in fullwave simulation. It largely simplifies the simulation process when an incident wave carrying OAM is needed. Both numerical and full-wave simulation results are provided to validate our design and they show a good agreement with each other. Then, the metasurface is optimized for high directivity. Our work can provide an efficient and effective way for OAM detection in radio communications.
Novel complementary metasurfaces for the orbital angular momentum generation

Abstract:Besides amplitude, phase and polarization, wavefront is an important property of electromagnetic (EM) waves. EM waves with twisted wavefronts are known to carry orbital angular momentum (OAM). In this paper, a complementary-type metasurface is proposed to generate an OAM beam at microwave regime. Two metasurfaces that can produce OAM of order 2 and 4 are designed. By using our novel design methods, which are based on circuit model and dyadic Green's function, a high conversion efficiency has been achieved with a very low profile.

Abstract:Terahertz (THz) beams with abundant spectrum resources and low beam divergence can be combined with orbital angular momentum (OAM) beams characterized by orthogonal propagation to multifold the capacity of wireless communication systems. However, in order to support the explosive growth of massive communication data traffic, THz OAM must be further enhanced with other multiplexing technologies. Therefore, it is imperative to develop new multifunctional devices. In this article, we propose a novel broadband dual-polarized reflective metasurface, which can generate two coaxially propagating OAM beams with distinct modes for each polarization. Because of the geometric symmetry, the metasurface shows the same electromagnetic response with respect to both x -and y -polarized waves, thus possessing the dual-polarized property. Simulated and measured results verify that the metasurface can realize the incorporation of OAM multiplexing and polarization multiplexing in a broad frequency range of 90–110 GHz. The crosstalks from other OAM modes and polarizations are lower than $-$ 16 dB and $-$ 21 dB, respectively. Based on the metasurface, a THz wireless communication system was demonstrated by multiplexing four independent OAM beams with each channel carrying a 6-Gbaud quaternary phase shift keying (QPSK) signal, so that an aggregate 48 Gbit/s data transmission with bit error rate (BER) below 3.8e-3 was achieved. This work verifies the feasibility of metasurface for multidimensional multiplexing in the THz region, meaning the metasurface may serve as a promising candidate for ultrahigh speed THz communication systems.

Abstract:The wavefront control of spin or orbital angular momentum (OAM) is widely applied in the optical and radio fields. However, most passive metasurfaces provide limited manipulations, such as the spin-locked wavefront, a static OAM combination, or an uncontrollable OAM energy distribution. We propose a reflection-type multi-feed metasurface to independently generate multi-mode OAM beams with dynamically switchable OAM combinations and spin states, while simultaneously, the energy distribution of carrying OAM modes is controllable. Specifically, four elements are proposed to overcome the spin-locked phase limitation by combining propagation and geometric phases. The robustness of these elements is analyzed. By involving the amplitude term and multi-feed technology in the design process, the proposed metasurface can generate OAM beams with a controllable energy distribution over modes and switchable mode combinations. OAM-based radio communication with four independent channels is experimentally demonstrated at 14 GHz by employing a pair of the proposed metasurfaces. The powers of different channels are adjustable by the provided amplitude term, and the maximum crosstalk is −9 dB, proving the effectiveness and practicability of the proposed method.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a linearly polarized terahertz-orbital angular momentum (THz-OAM) electromagnetic (EM) metasurface (MS) capable of simulating the generation of broadband multimode THz-OAM beams within the frequency range 200–240 GHz. Through simulations, processing, and testing of the MS, we demonstrate the generation of OAM EM waves with modes corresponding to l = ±1 and ±2. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the required mode can be adjusted during processing to accommodate specific requirements. The proposed MS exhibits several advantageous characteristics, such as high frequency, large bandwidth, multimode multiplexing, high integration, low cost, and insensitive polarization. These features make it highly valuable for various applications and hold significant importance for the development of the next generation of large-capacity and high-speed communication.

Abstract:A terahertz (THz) orbital angular momentum (OAM) multi-beam antenna based on a multilayer transmissive metasurface is proposed in this paper. The transmissive units with uniform insertion loss and phase shift of 2π are designed firstly, then the design principle of the antenna that can generate multi beams is studied. The designed antenna can simultaneously generate two OAM beams with different propagation directions and modes under illumination by a Gaussian beam at 100 GHz. The simulation results show a good agreement with the theoretical design, and the mode purities of the generated OAM beams could exceed 96%.

Abstract:In this paper, a reflective metasurface consists of 19 × 19 unit cells is designed, which can effectively convert general incident linear co-polarized wave to orbital angular momentum (OAM) with different modes. Using this reflective metasurface, we achieved OAM with mode 1, 2 and 3, and provides their phase and magnitude distribution in near field, as well as far field radiation pattern. Reflective beam is a vortex wave, and there is a distinct null at the center of the beam.

Abstract:Orbital angular momentum (OAM) is a promising degree of freedom for fundamental studies in electromagnetics and quantum mechanics. The unlimited state space of OAM shows a great potential to enhance channel capacities of classical and quantum communications. By exploring the Pancharatnam-Berry phase concept and engineering anisotropic scatterers in a metasurface with spatially varying orientations, a plane wave with zero OAM can be converted to a vortex beam carrying nonzero OAM. In this paper, we proposed two types of novel PEC (perfect electric conductor)-PMC (perfect magnetic conductor) anisotropic metasurfaces. One is composed of azimuthally continuous loops and the other is constructed by azimuthally discontinuous dipole scatterers. Both types of metasurfaces are mounted on a mushroom-type high impedance surface. Compared to previous metasurface designs for generating OAM, the proposed ones achieve nearly perfect conversion efficiency. In view of the eliminated vertical component of electric field, the continuous metasurface shows very smooth phase pattern at the near-field region, which cannot be achieved by convectional metasurfaces composed of discrete scatterers. On the other hand, the metasurface with discrete dipole scatterers shows a great flexibility to generate OAM with arbitrary topological charges. Our work is fundamentally and practically important to high-performance OAM generation.

Abstract:In this paper, an ultrathin dual-polarized Huygens' metasurface is proposed to achieve 360° phase control with high transmission. Based on this element, a dual-polarized transmissive metasurface antenna is designed to generate multi-mode vortex waves propagating coaxially in shared apertures in terahertz regime. Simulation results show that this method can be a promising solution for combining OAM multiplexing and polarization multiplexing for terahertz wireless communications.
Reconfigurable Mode Vortex Beam Generation Based on Transmissive Metasurfaces in the Terahertz Band

Abstract:Combining Terahertz (THz) and Orbital Angular Momentum (OAM) technologies has great potential in high-speed wireless communication. Theoretically, OAM with different modes has strict orthogonality. The communication capacity of the system will improve significantly if OAM technology is applied to the THz communication system. Thus, the manner to generate a high-quality and dynamically controllable THz-OAM beam has been of significant interest to researchers in related fields. In this study, a double-layer transmissive metasurface that uses 3D printing as the processing method with a low cost and processing difficulty is designed. Note that the height of the unit cell for constructing the metasurface is configurable. As the height changes continuously, the phase of the transmitted wave covers 0～2\begin{document}${\pi }$\end{document} within 90~110 GHz, while the transmittance of the units is always higher than 88%. At 100 GHz, which is fed by a WR-10 standard waveguide horn antenna, OAM beams with different modes are generated by changing the relative rotation angle between the double-layer metasurface. The simulation results show that the metasurface antenna designed in this study can achieve OAM beams of \begin{document}$ l=1, \mathrm{2,3} $\end{document}, and the two-dimensional amplitude and phase results correspond with the characteristics of the corresponding modes. When \begin{document}$ l=1,\mathrm{ }2,\mathrm{ }3 $\end{document}, the OAM beam’s modal purity is 85.4%, 84.9%, and 83.4%, respectively. The measurement results include the results at frequency points of 90, 100, and 110 GHz. The results show that the OAM beam has a high-quality bandwidth of 20 GHz, which indicates that the metasurface antenna designed in this study has a wide working bandwidth at a high frequency and can be applied to high-frequency OAM communication.

Abstract:With the development of various emerging technologies, the capacity of current wireless communication system is gradually saturated, and terahertz (THz) and orbital angular momentum (OAM) have hereby attracted much attention as two key technologies to increase the communication capacity. In this article, a THz-OAM wireless communication system operating at 100 GHz based on a transmissive metasurface is proposed for the first time to the best of our knowledge. The operation principle of multiplexing metasurface, which allows simultaneous generation of two coaxial OAM beams at different modes of <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$\boldsymbol {l}$ </tex-math></inline-formula> = 1 and −1, is studied. To meet the requirements of wireless communication and OAM multiplexing, a C-shaped transmissive unit is designed with characteristics of broad bandwidth, low transmission loss, and insensitive to the change of incident angle. Experimental measurements show that the generated two OAM beams feature high mode purity, providing the excellent orthogonality of modes. The generated two OAM modes are also employed as two OAM channels to transmit two independent communication signals with ON–OFF keying (OOK) modulation, and a data rate of 10 Gbit/s is achieved at a transmission distance of 300 mm ( <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$100\boldsymbol {\lambda }$ </tex-math></inline-formula> of 100 GHz) with bit error rates (BERs) below <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$3.8\,\,\boldsymbol {\times }\,\,\boldsymbol {10^{-3}}$ </tex-math></inline-formula> . Abstract:The terahertz (THz) and orbital angular momentum (OAM) technologies have become increasingly prominent since they can provide broad bandwidth and large amounts of multiplexing channels. In this paper, a high-speed communication system is proposed and demonstrated by employing photonics-aided THz signal generation and metasurface-based OAM multiplexing techniques. To take advantage of the large bandwidth in the THz band and reduce the complexity of the multiplexing device, the wideband unit operating at 100 GHz and the multiplexed metasurface are designed. After the performance is verified by both simulations and experiments, the generated OAM beams are used as multiplexing channels to transmit the communication signals with 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (16-QAM) modulation format, and a data rate of up to 48 Gbit/s is achieved. This work indicates that the metasurface can seamlessly bridge the OAM multiplexing and photonics-aided THz system, and is expected to pave the way towards the evolution of next-generation large-capacity wireless communication.

Abstract:Generating orbital angular momentum (OAM) carried by vortex beams in a broad bandwidth is imperative for communication systems. In this paper, we proposed a low-profile and wide-band metasurface to generate high-purity vortex beams by combining the polarization converter and the resonant phase. In addition, it is applicable for Linearly Polarized (LP) incident wave and Circularly Polarized (CP) incident wave. The metasurface consisting of 10 × 10 elements is used to generate vortex beam with mode l = 1. Simulation results at 15 GHz verify the feasibility of this method, which paves a new way for generating vortex beams.

Abstract:Reflective metasurfaces have been widely explored for generating orbital angular momentum (OAM) carried by vortex beams. However, the most OAM generators have narrow bandwidth or major for circular polarization waves, which are caused by the propagation phase and Pancharatnam–Berry (PB) phase. In this letter, by combining the propagation phase and reflection polarization conversion metasurface, a novel OAM generator operating at microwave band is proposed, which is based on a low $Q$ -factor C-shaped element. A proof-of-concept prototype is fabricated and measured. This generator not only covers a broad bandwidth from 12 to 18 GHz (40%) but can also be used for dual-linear and dual-circular polarized waves.

Abstract:Metasurfaces employed for generating orbital angular momentum (OAM) beams have drawn tremendous interest since they can offer extensive applications ranging from quantum optics to information processing over the subwavelength scale. In this study, a flexible bilayer metasurface is proposed and experimentally verified in the terahertz (THz) region. Based on Pancharatnam-Berry (P-B) phase, the proposed meta-atom satisfies perfect polarization-flipping at the design frequency and is implemented for the generation of vortex beams under circularly polarized (CP) illumination. Two metasurfaces are designed, fabricated and experimentally characterized with a THz spectral imaging system for linearly polarized (LP) illumination. The transmitted field intensity distribution of y component is petal-shaped of gradually varied pieces with the frequency due to the complementary symmetric structure, indicating OAM state transition between a single vortex beam and superposition of two vortex beams. The measured spectral imaging distributions of amplitude and phase show good agreement with the simulation results. Such designs open a pathway for modulation of THz OAM states and bring more possibilities for flexible metasurfaces in a THz application.

Abstract:Communications using the orbital angular momentum (OAM) of radio waves have attracted much attention in recent years. In this paper, a novel millimeter-wave dual OAM mode antenna is cleverly designed, using which a 60 GHz wireless communication link with two separate OAM channels is experimentally demonstrated. The main body of the dual OAM antenna is a traveling-wave ring resonator using two feeding ports fed by a 90° hybrid coupler. A parabolic reflector is used to focus the beams. All the antenna components are fabricated by 3D printing technique and the electro-less copper plating surface treatment process. The performances of the antenna, such as S-parameters, near-fields, directivity, and isolation between the two OAM modes are measured. Experimental results show that this antenna can radiate two coaxially propagating OAM modes beams simultaneously. The multiplexing and de-multiplexing are easily realized in the antennas themselves. The two OAM mode channels have good isolation of more than 20 dB, thus ensuring the reliable transmission links at the same time.
