Abstract:Engineered cementitious composites (ECC) exhibits impressive tensile strength but has significant environmental drawbacks due to high cement consumption. Recently, engineered geopolymer composites (EGC) have gained attention as a potential ECC alternative. This comprehensive study reviews the latest EGC advancements, encompassing mix design, design theory, engineering properties, environmental benefits, and durability. It emphasizes how factors like activators, precursors, fibers, additives, and aggregates impact EGC properties, making it a cost-effective material for fire, chemical resistance, and dynamic loads. To address limitations in traditional literature reviews, innovative research methods, including scientometric analysis, were employed to provide a cohesive analysis. This review aims to facilitate knowledge dissemination and collaboration by summarizing EGC advances and highlighting remaining challenges in developing practical applications. It is revealed from the review that various manufacturing methods enhance geopolymers, especially in geopolymer concrete, where replacing 50% of ordinary Portland cement with fly ash boosts strength. Geopolymer concrete excels in pre-cast applications, offering durability and resistance to harsh conditions as an eco-friendly alternative to Portland cement. It suits highway pavement, walls, marine coatings, and tiles, reducing carbon emissions and promoting efficient waste management. EGCs find broad use in construction due to their strong, durable, and eco-friendly qualities, supporting sustainable infrastructure development.

Abstract:The discovery of an innovative category of inorganic geopolymer composites has generated extensive scientific attention and the kaleidoscopic development of their applications. The escalating concerns over global warming owing to emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2), a primary greenhouse gas, from the ordinary Portland cement industry, may hopefully be mitigated by the development of geopolymer construction composites with a lower carbon footprint. The current manuscript comprehensively reviews the rheological, strength and durability properties of geopolymer composites, along with shedding light on their recent key advancements viz., micro-structures, state-of-the-art applications such as the immobilization of toxic or radioactive wastes, digital geopolymer concrete, 3D-printed fly ash-based geopolymers, hot-pressed and foam geopolymers, etc. They have a crystal-clear role to play in offering a sustainable prospect to the construction industry, as part of the accessible toolkit of building materials—binders, cements, mortars, concretes, etc. Consequently, the present scientometric review manuscript is grist for the mill and aims to contribute as a single key note document assessing exhaustive research findings for establishing the viability of fly ash-based geopolymer composites as the most promising, durable, sustainable, affordable, user and eco-benevolent building materials for the future.

Abstract:The advancement of eco-friendly technology in the construction sector has been improving rapidly in the last few years. As a result, multiple building materials were developed, enhanced, and proposed as replacements for some traditional materials. One notable example presents geopolymer as a substitute for ordinary Portland concrete (OPC). The manufacturing process of (OPC) generates CO2 emissions and a high energy demand, both of which contribute to ozone depletion and global warming. The implementation of geopolymer concrete (GPC) technology in the construction sector provides a path to more sustainable growth and a cleaner environment. This is due to geopolymer concrete's ability to reduce environmental pollutants and reduce the construction industry's carbon footprint. This is achieved through its unique composition, which typically involves industrial byproducts like fly ash or slag. These materials, rich in silicon and aluminum, react with alkaline solutions to form a binding gel, bypassing the need for the high-energy clinker production required in OPC. The use of such byproducts not only reduces CO2 emissions but also contributes to waste minimization. Additionally, geopolymer offers extra advantages compared to OPC, including improved mechanical strength, enhanced durability, and good stability in acidic and alkaline settings. Such properties make GPC particularly suitable for a range of construction environments, from industrial applications to infrastructure projects exposed to harsh conditions. This paper comprehensively reviews the different characteristics of geopolymers, which include their composition, compressive strength, durability, and curing methods. Furthermore, the environmental impacts related to the manufacturing of geopolymer materials were evaluated through the life-cycle assessment method. The result demonstrated that geopolymer concrete maintains positive environmental impacts due to the fact that it produces fewer carbon dioxide CO2 emissions compared to OPC concrete during its manufacturing; however, geopolymer concrete had some minor negative environmental impacts, including abiotic depletion, human toxicity, freshwater ecotoxicity, terrestrial ecotoxicity, and acidification. These are important considerations for ongoing research aimed at further improving the sustainability of geopolymer concrete. Moreover, it was determined that silicate content, curing temperature, and the proportion of alkaline solution to binder are the major factors significantly influencing the compressive strength of geopolymer concrete. The advancement of geopolymer technology represents not just a stride toward more sustainable construction practices but also paves the way for innovative approaches in the field of building materials.

Abstract:Portland cement (PC) is considered the most energy-intensive building material and contributes to around 10% of global warming. It exacerbates global warming and climate change, which have a harmful environmental impact. Efforts are being made to produce sustainable and green concrete as an alternative to PC concrete. As a result, developing a more sustainable strategy and eco-friendly materials to replace ordinary concrete has become critical. Many studies on geopolymer concrete, which has equal or even superior durability and strength compared to traditional concrete, have been conducted for this purpose by many researchers. Geopolymer concrete (GPC) has been developed as a possible new construction material for replacing conventional concrete, offering a clean technological choice for long-term growth. Over the last few decades, geopolymer concrete has been investigated as a feasible green construction material that can reduce CO2 emissions because it uses industrial wastes as raw materials. GPC has proven effective for structural applications due to its workability and analogical strength compared to standard cement concrete. This review article discusses the engineering properties and microstructure of GPC and shows its merits in construction applications with some guidelines and suggestions recommended for both the academic community and the industrial sector. This literature review also demonstrates that the mechanical properties of GPC are comparable and even sometimes better than those of PC concrete. Moreover, the microstructure of GPC is significantly different from that of PC concrete microstructure and can be affected by many factors.

Abstract:The rise in population and improvement in the lifestyle of human beings has caused a rapid increase in energy demands for buildings in the present day. An upsurge in energy demand, lack of fossil fuels, and environmental issues provide a crucial motive to the development of sustainable and viable infrastructure. Geopolymer (GP) composite free from cement, made from various waste materials with a high amount of Al2SiO3 and Na2SiO3/NaOH (alkali-activated silica) is evolving as an eminent material for sustainability purposes. They are also preferred due to the lesser emission of greenhouse gases as compared to ordinary Portland cement (OPC). This paper aims at presenting a sustainable domain and state of the art review of GP composite. The properties of composites made from various geopolymeric waste binders are presented. Besides, the microstructure and chemical characterization of GP composites are also discussed. The durability of GP composite is also highlighted considering its deterioration in various aggressive environments. In the end, a global warming potential (GWP) assessment was conducted and the practical applications of GP composites in the building industry are also provided.

Abstract:The concept of sustainable development provides for the search for environmentally friendly alternatives to traditional materials and technologies that would reduce the amount of CO2 emissions into the atmosphere, do not pollute the environment, and reduce energy costs and the cost of production processes. These technologies include the production of geopolymer concretes. The purpose of the study was a detailed in-depth analytical review of studies of the processes of structure formation and properties of geopolymer concretes in retrospect and the current state of the issue. Geopolymer concrete is a suitable, environmentally friendly and sustainable alternative to concrete based on ordinary Portland cement (OPC) with higher strength and deformation properties due to its more stable and denser aluminosilicate spatial microstructure. The properties and durability of geopolymer concretes depend on the composition of the mixture and the proportions of its components. A review of the mechanisms of structure formation, the main directions for the selection of compositions and processes of polymerization of geopolymer concretes has been made. The technologies of combined selection of the composition of geopolymer concrete, production of nanomodified geopolymer concrete, 3D printing of building structures from geopolymer concrete, and monitoring the state of structures using self-sensitive geopolymer concrete are considered. Geopolymer concrete with the optimal ratio of activator and binder has the best properties. Geopolymer concretes with partial replacement of OPC with aluminosilicate binder have a denser and more compact microstructure due to the formation of a large amount of calcium silicate hydrate, which provides improved strength, durability, less shrinkage, porosity and water absorption. An assessment of the potential reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from the production of geopolymer concrete compared to the production of OPC has been made. The potential of using geopolymer concretes in construction practice is assessed in detail.

Abstract:Sustainability and the quest for a more robust construction material cannot be divorced from each other. While Portland cement has revolutionized the construction sector, its environmental toll, particularly in greenhouse gas emissions and global warming, cannot be ignored. Addressing this dilemma requires embracing alternatives like geopolymer cement/geopolymer binder (GPC/GPB). Over the last few decades, considerable strides have been achieved in advancing GPC as a sustainable construction material, including its utilization in pavement construction. Despite these advances, gaps still exist in GPC optimal potential in pavement construction, as most studies have concentrated on specific attributes rather than on a comprehensive evaluation. To bridge this gap, this review adopts a novel, holistic approach by integrating environmental impacts with performance metrics. To set the stage, this review first delves into the geopolymer concept from a chemistry perspective, providing an essential broad overview for exploring GPC's innovations and implications in pavement applications. The findings reveal that GPC not only significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption compared to Portland cement but also enhances pavement performance. Further, GPC concrete pavement exhibits superior mechanical, durability, and thermal properties to ensure its long-term performance in pavement applications. However, challenges to GPC utilization as a pavement material include the variability of raw materials, the need for suitable hardeners, the lack of standardized codes and procedures, cost competitiveness, and limited field data. Despite these challenges, the process of geopolymerization presents GPC as a sustainable material for pavement construction, aligning with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 3, 9, 11, and 12.

Abstract:The manufacture of ordinary Portland cement (OPC) produces a lot of CO2 in the atmosphere. Researchers have recently focused on exploring the behaviour of geopolymer concrete (GPC) as an alternative to Portland cement concrete (PCC) in micro and macro dimensions. Geopolymers (GP) are innovative cement-based materials that could totally replace OPC composites. Geopolymer composites (GC) have a reduced carbon footprint and utilize less energy than OPC. The construction industry's main concerns are material characteristics and the performance of reinforced concrete (RC) structural components. Therefore, this review paper is going to look at some important material properties, like fresh characteristics, compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, flexural strength, and modulus of elasticity, as well as the evidence of the structural behaviour of GPC beams. According to the findings of this review, GPC offers similar or superior fresh and mechanical properties to conventional concrete composite. In addition, it was mentioned that GPC might be utilized to design GPC members securely in terms of their strength capabilities and standard codes of practice. Nevertheless, further study is suggested to include more detailed and cost-effective design methods for the potential use of GPC for large-scale field applications.

Abstract:The environmental impact of Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) is significant because its production emits large amounts of CO2. Further, OPC durability is limited largely due to inherent brittleness. This review examines the environmental and economic impacts of OPC. Using supplementary cementitious materials to enhance material greenness or produce alternative binders such as geopolymers is discussed. This is followed by a review of recent efforts to increase durability through fiber reinforcement. Finally, the current state of the art of geopolymer composites (with both high material greenness and high durability) is discussed along with opportunities and challenges for these promising materials.

Abstract:The environmental aspects of sustainable development in the construction industry consist of the utilization of secondary raw materials and materials which can be recycled in the design and construction of new structures. The preliminary and inevitable interest in the use of full or partial replacements of by-products as complementary pozzolanic materials was mostly induced by the enforcement of the reduction/elimination of the greenhouse gas emission from the production of Portland cement. With the significant evolution of geopolymer concrete as an alternative for Portland cement in the past decade, it is necessary to explore possible construction applications in which geopolymer concrete can be utilized. Hence, this review paper was carried out to explore various elements such as the precursors used in geopolymers concrete and their corresponding applications. The environmental impacts of various geopolymer concrete are also discussed. This paper also presents an overview of the real applications of geopolymer concrete for the construction of various infrastructures. Recommendations and prospects for geopolymer concrete are also provided.

Abstract:The construction sector is a significant contributor to global greenhouse gas emissions, resource depletion, and environmental degradation. Therefore, sustainable development in the construction sector is essential to reduce its environmental impact. Geopolymer materials have attracted particular attention offering technical properties similar to those of Portland cementitious materials with a much lower CO 2 emission and lower environmental impact. Their use as clean insulating materials seems promising due to their excellent thermal and mechanical properties. Moreover, natural fibers, such as bamboo, flax, hemp, and jute, can be used as reinforcement within the geopolymer matrix, providing additional benefits such as improved tensile and flexural strength, reduced density, and improved thermal and acoustic insulation properties. Hence, this review paper aims to explore the raw materials and manufacturing conditions involved in the formation of compact and porous geopolymer materials. In addition, the various factors affecting the properties of geopolymer materials are critically discussed and compared with those of Portland cementitious materials. Moreover, the impact of many variables, including fiber size, fiber orientation, and fiber content on the performance of natural fiber-reinforced geopolymer composites are highlighted, providing insights for future research developments.

Abstract:This paper discusses the influence of fiber reinforcement on the properties of geopolymer concrete composites, based on fly ash, ground granulated blast furnace slag and metakaolin. Traditional concrete composites are brittle in nature due to low tensile strength. The inclusion of fibrous material alters brittle behavior of concrete along with a significant improvement in mechanical properties i.e., toughness, strain and flexural strength. Ordinary Portland cement (OPC) is mainly used as a binding agent in concrete composites. However, current environmental awareness promotes the use of alternative binders i.e., geopolymers, to replace OPC because in OPC production, significant quantity of CO2 is released that creates environmental pollution. Geopolymer concrete composites have been characterized using a wide range of analytical tools including scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and elemental detection X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). Insight into the physicochemical behavior of geopolymers, their constituents and reinforcement with natural polymeric fibers for the making of concrete composites has been gained. Focus has been given to the use of sisal, jute, basalt and glass fibers.

Abstract:Several industrial by-products are extensively used again as a supplementary cementitious material or aggregates in the interest to reduce environmental footprints in terms of energy depletion, pollution, waste disposition, resource depletion, and global warming related with conventional cement. A remarkable quantity of industrial scrap materials, primarily designated as construction and demolition waste from the construction industry, has transformed into crucial apprehension of governments. In the recent past, substantial explorations have been accomplished to appreciate the distinct characteristics of concrete, employing recycled aggregates from construction and demolition waste. Geopolymer composite is a new cementitious material, and it appears to be a potential replacement for conventional cement concrete. This paper summarises the previous research concerning the utilisation of recycled aggregate as a partial or complete supplants for conventional aggregates in geopolymer concrete. The influence of recycled aggregate addition on the fresh and hardened properties of geopolymer concrete is comprehensively reviewed in this paper. The studies suggest significant improvement in the workability on addition of recycled aggregates to geopolymer concrete. However, the addition results in increased water absorption and sorptivity.

Abstract:This article investigates the possible synergy between geopolymers and plastics as a method for sustainable composite materials, addressing the growing worldwide need for environmentally responsible solutions. Geopolymers, which provide low-carbon alternatives to traditional building materials, are being studied alongside plastics, which are recognised for their flexibility and lightweight properties. The research emphasises the ability of this composite to attain increased mechanical, thermal, and chemical qualities by investigating molecular-level interaction processes, enhanced material properties, and applications in diverse sectors. Furthermore, the research assesses environmental consequences, such as decreased carbon emissions and energy usage, while also analysing manufacturing and scaling problems. Abstract:The traditional cement production wastes a large amount of natural resources and energy, and causes environmental pollution, which cannot meet the green and sustainable development needs of modern building materials. Geopolymer is an environmentally friendly materials that can utilize industrial solid wastes and have low environmental load and energy consumption, which is expected to become a substitute for OPC. However, geopolymers also have shortcomings in some properties that need to be improved. This paper reviews the recent research progress on the performance improvement, potential new applicationw and sustainability assessment of geopolymer materials. Discussion from this paper showed that the properties of geopolymer materials, including rheology, hardening properties, toughness, etc., can be significantly improved by some methods such as chemical additives, mineral admixtures, nanoparticles, fibers, etc. Furthermore, this paper proves that geopolymers have great application potential as porous thermal insulation materials and 3D printing building materials, and points out some performance optimization methods for geopolymer-based porous materials and 3D printing materials. In this work, it was also concluded that geopolymer shows significant advantages over OPC in sustainable analysis index such as E-energy and E-CO2 (Energy and CO2 emission) based on LCA method. Finally, a few potential opportunities and development directions have been suggested for future research on geopolymer materials.

Abstract:Portland cement manufacture emits 5–7% CO2, which is responsible for global warming. Geopolymers minimize CO2 emission and may be a partial alternative to Portland cement in the building industry. The geopolymer technology gives solution to the utilization of industrial byproducts (waste) containing aluminosilicate phases with little negative impact on environment. Geopolymer cements are mainly produced by using secondary raw materials such as fly ash, metakaolin, calcined clays, zeolite etc. by the activation of alkali/alkali silicate solutions. Combination of different source materials containing aluminosilicate and alkali solutions with optimization of curing temperature, alkali concentrations, additives, Na2O/SiO2 ratio etc. gives geopolymer cements of high mechanical and durability properties. Due to their high mechanical properties and environmental benefit, geopolymer cement and concrete appear as a future prospective construction material and have applications in different areas.

Abstract:A geopolymer is an inorganic amorphous cementitious material, emerging as an alternative sustainable binder for greener concrete production over Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC). Geopolymer concrete production promotes waste reuse since the applicable precursor materials include agricultural and industrial waste that requires disposal, helping to reduce waste in landfills and ensuring sustainable environmental protection. This study investigates the development of an environmentally friendly sodium silicate alternative (SSA) derived from pumice powder (PP) in place of a commercial Na2SiO3 solution at a 10 M concentration. Six concrete batches were produced at alkaline/precursor (A/P) ratios of 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, and 0.5. The geopolymer mix AF4, with an A/P ratio of 0.4, became the optimum geopolymer concrete design; however, it recorded lower compressive, tensile splitting, and flexural strengths, respectively, against the control OPC concrete. The geopolymer formulations, however, obtained 28-day-hardened concrete densities comparable to the control concrete. The 28-day compressive strength of the OPC concrete was 29.4 MPa, higher than the 18.8 MPa recorded for AF4. However, the 56-day strength of AF4 improved to 22.4 MPa, an around 19% increase compared to the 30.8 MPa achieved by the control mix on day 56, having experienced only a 5% strength increase. The low mechanical performances of the geopolymer formulation could be attributed to extra water added to the original geopolymer design to improve the workability of the geopolymer mix. Therefore, the SSA alkaline solution using PP showed some potential for developing geopolymer concrete for low-strength construction applications.

Abstract:Geopolymer concrete (GPC) is a new material in the construction industry, with different chemical compositions and reactions involved in a binding material. The pozzolanic materials (industrial waste like fly ash, ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS), and rice husk ash), which contain high silica and alumina, work as binding materials in the mix. Geopolymer concrete is economical, low energy consumption, thermally stable, easily workable, eco-friendly, cementless, and durable. GPC reduces carbon footprints by using industrial solid waste like slag, fly ash, and rice husk ash. Around one tonne of carbon dioxide emissions produced one tonne of cement that directly polluted the environment and increased the world’s temperature by increasing greenhouse gas production. For sustainable construction, GPC reduces the use of cement and finds the alternative of cement for the material’s binding property. So, the geopolymer concrete is an alternative to Portland cement concrete and it is a potential material having large commercial value and for sustainable development in Indian construction industries. The comprehensive survey of the literature shows that geopolymer concrete is a perfect alternative to Portland cement concrete because it has better physical, mechanical, and durable properties. Geopolymer concrete is highly resistant to acid, sulphate, and salt attack. Geopolymer concrete plays a vital role in the construction industry through its use in bridge construction, high-rise buildings, highways, tunnels, dams, and hydraulic structures, because of its high performance. It can be concluded from the review that sustainable development is achieved by employing geopolymers in Indian construction industries, because it results in lower CO2 emissions, optimum utilization of natural resources, utilization of waste materials, is more cost-effective in long life infrastructure construction, and, socially, in financial benefits and employment generation.

Abstract:The development of green and sustainable materials in the building industry is seen as a potential alternative to the use of Portland cement, and an opportunity to convert a variety of waste into useful byproducts. One key driver in geopolymer development is the desire to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the production of cement products. In this dynamic, green geopolymer pastes were prepared by using easily available Completely Decomposed Granite (CDG) soil with partial addition of low-calcium fly ash (FA). In the mixture, Na2SiO3 and NaOH were used as the reactive solution to dissolve silica and alumina in the CDG and FA particles. Experimental results showed that the Completely Decomposed Granite (CDG) can be synthesized with an alkaline activator, with good compressive resistance, high degree of binding and compact microstructure.

Abstract:Porous geopolymers have emerged as one of the most promising inorganic porous materials over the last decade, due to their inexpensive and easy fabrication process, suitable properties, thermal and chemical stability, and extensive applications. To further improve or optimize the properties of porous geopolymers or to endow them with new functionalities, a significant effort has been devoted to the exploitation and application of porous geopolymer composite materials. This review article highlights the current state-of-the-art in the field of porous geopolymer composites manufacturing methods (direct foaming, embedding lightweight (porous) fillers, additive manufacturing, etc.), properties (mechanical properties, thermal properties, adsorption properties, and others), and applications. With the summary and analysis of previous research literature, this review aims to foster further investigations into developing innovative routes for the fabrication of porous geopolymer components with improved properties and to encourage the widespread technological application of these materials.
