Abstract:A set of defining parameters for modeling stages of a surface defect propagation in the outer surface of a metal pipeline taking into consideration fatigue strength has been formed. For a section of a pipeline with a surface defect, it was proposed to use an algorithm of forecasting polarization potentials using means of neural networks. A procedure of functioning of the testing set was elaborated for estimating efficiency of neural networks. The procedure includes appropriate training methods. According to the results of analysis of interconnected deformation and corrosion processes, elements of a methodology of formation of information support for forecasting service life of a linear part of underground metal pipelines taking into consideration corrosion fatigue have been developed. Known results of estimation of service life of underground metal pipelines assumed linear nature of corrosion rate. Relevant information was presented in international and national standards. Recent experimental studies have shown that it is advisable to take into consideration nonlinear nature of corrosion rate in the outer surface of underground metal pipelines (BMP). A BMP section was inspected with the aid of a polarization potential meter together with a contactless current meter and principles of using neural networks for processing experimental results were formulated. An example of actual BMP was considered and analyzed for metal of a pipe of 17G1S grade steel with a corrosion defect in its outer surface. This analysis has resulted in estimation of metal service life and revealed nonlinearity characterized by magnitude of d=1.136. A control method and procedures for estimating polarization potentials with the help of neural networks were proposed. They make it possible to describe the process of corrosion defect propagation into the depth of the pipe wall physically sound and mathematically more correct in contrast to the standard procedures. The information presented is important for improving methods of control of underground metal pipelines operated by oil and gas enterprises, in particular, methods of correct measurement and evaluation of polarization potentials and anode currents in insulation defects taking into consideration nonlinearity of informative parameters

Abstract:The introduction of new technologies for diagnosing underground metal pipelines with dangerous surface defects is a practically important task. That is why studies aimed at improving the methods of assessing the quality of deformed metal pipelines and structural elements are necessary and relevant. The evaluation of the effectiveness of engineering and technological solutions for oil and gas enterprises needs improvement. In this context, an important task is to solve the problem of quality control (including durability) of gas and oil transportation systems and the improvement of appropriate metrological support. Based on surface physics and fracture mechanics, development of a methodological approach to assessing the quality and resource of underground metal pipelines (UMP) of oil and gas enterprises, taking into account the constructions strength, corrosion fatigue, parameters of corrosion protection and metrological support. Results of processing of normative documents and scientific works in the field of gas transportation enterprises, as well as methods of surface physics, mechanics of deformed solid body, fracture mechanics, qualimetry regarding the system “pipeline (UMP) – coating”. A new criterion for the strength of the surface of a metal underground pipe is proposed, which characterizes the peculiarities of bond fractures (adhesion) between the coating and the metal. Using the criterion of the strength of a metal tube with a defect in the electrolyte, the dependence of the critical internal pressure of the gas pipeline (UMP) on the geometric and energy (elastic and plastic) parameters of the metal, as well as the current of the anodic dissolution, which characterizes the features of the crack propagation at the bottom of the corrosion cavern. On the basis of surface physics and fracture mechanics obtained, a methodology for evaluating the quality of underground metal pipelines of oil and gas enterprises was developed to determine their resource, taking into account strength, corrosion fatigue, parameters of corrosion protection and metrological support.

Abstract:The information was reviewed to orderly arrange theoretical provisions and to devise practical recommendations for the diagnostic examination of a system for the anti-corrosion protection of underground metal oil and gas pipelines. A set of informative parameters for modeling functional relations and determining polarization potential in the system "underground metal structure – cathodic protection plant" was formed. It was proposed to apply the algorithm of prediction of corrosive current, the approach of non-linear programming, as well as the neural network, including the corresponding methods of learning, for a pipeline section, taking into account the polarization potential on the outer surface. The test set to evaluate the effectiveness of a neural network was formed. The above-mentioned information is essential for the improvement of the equipment of distant control of metal structures of oil and gas enterprises, that is, the procedures for correct measuring and evaluating direct and alternating voltages, as well as polarization potential in a pipeline. The methods and algorithms of neural networks, which are used to control the anticorrosive protection of underground pipelines, were explored. The study of the effectiveness of artificial neural networks, specifically, a two-layer network of direct propagation with the function of prediction of the resource of metal pipes. Using the polarization potential, we detected the capability of neural networks to perform inaccessible for conventional mathematics operations of processing, comparison, classification of images, capability of self-learning and self-organization relative to underground pipelines. The qualimetric quality criterion for a pipeline section, taking into consideration the optimal range of polarization potential was improved. We developed the method for prediction of the polarization potential of a cathodic protection plant and transitional specific resistance of the insulating coating on the surface of an underground metal structure using a neural network. Taking into consideration the results of analysis of polarization potential and transitional specific resistance, the methodology of formation of information support for procedures of degradation of anticorrosive dielectric coating and metal on the outer surface of an underground metal structure, as well as for predicting its resource, was designed

Abstract:During the process of urban development, there is large‐scale laying of underground pipeline networks and coordinated operation of both new and old networks. The underground concrete drainage pipes have become a focus of operation and maintenance due to their strong concealment and serious corrosion. The current manual inspections for subterranean concrete drainage pipelines involve high workloads and risks, which makes meeting the diagnostic needs of intricate urban pipeline networks challenging. Through advanced information technology, it has reached a consensus to intelligently perceive, accurately identify, and precise prediction of the condition of urban subterranean drainage networks. The development process of detection and evaluation methods for underground concrete drainage pipe networks is the focus of this study. The study discusses common algorithms for classifying, locating, and quantifying pipeline defects by combining the principles of deep learning with typical application examples. The intelligent progression of information collection methods, image processing techniques, damage prediction models, and pipeline diagnostic systems is systematically elaborated upon. Lastly, prospects for future research of intelligent pipeline diagnosis are provided.

Abstract:Abstract In recent years, leakage, rupture, and perforation accidents in oil and gas pipelines caused by corrosion have increased significantly. Therefore, the online, nondestructive testing of oil and gas pipelines has become essential to maintain their structural integrity. Ultrasonic guided wave detection technology presents advantages, such as high detection efficiency and complete coverage of the pipeline body, which is conducive to popularization and application. This paper considered the natural gas transmission station as the research object, while ultrasonic guided wave technology was used for detection. Ultrasonic guided wave equipment was used to detect the field process pipeline and experimental pipeline, obtaining data samples of the defects and welds. Defects were automatically identified via data processing by combining the characteristic signal method and the BP neural network. The results indicated that the neural network displayed a recognition accuracy of 80.9% for the features and defects in the test samples. By combining the characteristic signal method and the BP neural network, the defect recognition technology can reduce the subjective influence of inspectors while improving recognition efficiency and accuracy.

Abstract:Submarine Pipeline plays an important role in the development of Oil and Gas, especially when the field extends into the deep water. There is over 4,000 kilometers submarine pipeline in China Sea, and some of them encountered failure, and the accidents lead to loss of property and pollution of environment. Health Monitoring is a new concept and economical way to ensure the safety of pipeline. In the paper, a practical algorithm which includes abnormality detector, remaining fatigue life counter and vibration analysis, and its practical application program based on DELPHI, are both introduced. An AR (Auto-Regression) Model is adopted as a statistical tool to detect the abnormity of time-history signals, if the abnormity comes up, the vibration analysis is started up to give out the vibration information, which is the effective evidence to alarm the owner where the danger is and how the danger is. With the abnormity detector module, a remaining fatigue life counter always runs to counter the remaining life of pipeline, especially the welding of pipeline. The system is all developed based on Distributed Optical Fiber Sensor (DOFS). The system in the paper is now used on QK17-1 Oil field Submarine Pipeline in Bohai Sea, China.

Abstract:The scarcity of the defect data may lead to the underestimation of defects, resulting in maintenance plans with inspection intervals that may not guarantee timely repairs. To address the low reliability of defect distribution models developed from insufficient data, we propose a systematic approach for deriving conservative probability distributions of pipeline defects. Based on the formal definition of conservative probability distributions, we present methods for modeling such distributions for pipeline defects, with the flexibility to adjust the degree of conservativeness. Furthermore, by incorporating Bayesian inference, we introduce a method for dynamic maintenance planning. The method enables effective utilization of the limited defect data samples obtained during pipeline inspection to assess overall pipeline conditions and dynamically determine subsequent maintenance intervals. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method can achieve cost-effective and safety-assured pipeline maintenance plans by quantitatively adjusting the degree of conservativeness, making it broadly applicable to various types of pipeline defects.

Abstract:To recognize, position and quantify the defects of pipe wall early is a significant method to direct pipeline maintenance work and maintain pipeline integrity. Currently, one mature detecting method designed for pipeline erosion and metal loss defects is using magnetic leakage detecting device positioned inside the pipes. The pipeline magnetic leakage detecting device with Hall probe mounted on it is in fact a kind of device designed to collect defective magnetic flux leakage signals. The data acquired will be ultimately fed back to computer for further analysis and processing. This paper introduces the design of the data analysis and processing system for a 1,016 mm diameter, high resolution oil and gas pipeline corrosion defects inspection tool. This system is implemented with proven programming methods and is able to complete the analysis and processing works automatically, which is accordingly capable of farthest saving time and boosting accuracy and reliability and thus to meet the need of pipeline automatic inspection.

Abstract:In this paper, we present an external pipeline inspection robotic system capable of detecting the surface defects on above-ground pipelines and modeling their degradation. This system consists of two subsystems, the main base and the sensing system. The main base is a self-driving autonomous ground vehicle (AGV) equipped with Lidar, acoustic sensors and motor encoders, which can track the pipeline on uneven terrains. The sensing system includes two cameras attached to a C-arm, which rotates around the pipe. The two cameras are placed 180° from each other and can take pictures at 90° intervals, allowing the system to analyze the full 360° of the pipe with only half of the rotation as compared to a single camera system. When the C-arm encounters a flange or support, it retracts off the pipe, moves past the obstacle, and extends back to continue taking images. These images are used for defect detection. The detected defect data is then used for modeling the defect degradation and predicting when the defects become critical and require maintenance.

Abstract:A necessary element of the system of automated management of geographically distributed production facilities is multicriteria control of their safety. The urgency of the problem of ensuring industrial safety increases when it comes to dangerous and especially dangerous production facilities, the elimination of the consequences of accidents at which are associated with high environmental and economic damage to the state economy. The article substantiates the criteria for the analysis of scientific developments in the field under consideration. The results of the analysis of developments in the field of monitoring the state of geographically distributed production facilities by means of intelligent software and hardware complexes and systems using fiber-optic sensors, etc. are presented. Based on the justified criteria, the selection of technical solutions for the creation of a geographically distributed system for monitoring the state of production facilities of the oil and gas industry was made.

Abstract:Pipelines play an important role in the national/international transportation of natural gas, petroleum products, and other energy resources. Pipelines are set up in different environments and consequently suffer various damage challenges, such as environmental electrochemical reaction, welding defects, and external force damage, etc. Defects like metal loss, pitting, and cracks destroy the pipeline’s integrity and cause serious safety issues. This should be prevented before it occurs to ensure the safe operation of the pipeline. In recent years, different non-destructive testing (NDT) methods have been developed for in-line pipeline inspection. These are magnetic flux leakage (MFL) testing, ultrasonic testing (UT), electromagnetic acoustic technology (EMAT), eddy current testing (EC). Single modality or different kinds of integrated NDT system named Pipeline Inspection Gauge (PIG) or un-piggable robotic inspection systems have been developed. Moreover, data management in conjunction with historic data for condition-based pipeline maintenance becomes important as well. In this study, various inspection methods in association with non-destructive testing are investigated. The state of the art of PIGs, un-piggable robots, as well as instrumental applications, are systematically compared. Furthermore, data models and management are utilized for defect quantification, classification, failure prediction and maintenance. Finally, the challenges, problems, and development trends of pipeline inspection as well as data management are derived and discussed.

Abstract:Ultrasonic in-line inspection is one of the most widely adopted nondestructive testing methods for defect detection in pipelines. In practical industrial scenes, pipeline specification varies, sensor failure occurs frequently, and the number of pipeline defect samples is scarce. How to detect defects without false detection caused by invalid data and with limited labeled samples is a challenging problem in this area. An ultrasonic in-line inspection data processing method considering invalid data caused by sensor failure is proposed in this paper to enhance the accuracy of the defect and its profile detection. Firstly, the multi-channel data is aggregated according to sampling time. The data dimension is reduced, and the accuracy of the invalid waveform detection adopting isolation forest arithmetic is improved. The methods are adopted for the invalid waveforms replacement with two-dimensional cubic spline interpolation using adjacent sensors. Secondly, a natural breakpoint method is adopted to locate the echo peaks. Residual wall thickness is evaluated by calculating the time difference between the echo peaks. A fast pseudo-colorization method based on sliding windows and a morphological image processing method are proposed to detect defects and their profiles efficiently utilizing the residual wall thickness. Finally, practical in-line inspection data is utilized to evaluate the performance. The experiment results illustrate that the detection accuracy is enhanced on different sizes of pipelines without requiring labeled samples.

Abstract:Abstract Natural gas is an indispensable resource for human life. Its transport is usually done through underground pipelines. Due to the environment in which they are placed, the pipelines are subjected to a continuous process of corrosion. This paper aimed a 3D numerical analysis using specialized software (COMSOL Multiphysics) to study several parameters that influence the corrosion of underground pipelines. Starting from real geometric and environmental data, a comparative analysis was performed, considering the pipeline coating (e.g., with HDPE - high- density polyethylene), the placement of the cathode protection electrode, and the soil conductivity near the pipeline. The results confirm the need to cover the pipelines and can be a starting point for choosing the final configuration of the cathodic protection system.

Abstract:This article is devoted to the issues of creating an adaptive intelligent system, for monitoring and controlling the technological process for electrochemical corrosion protection of main pipelines (MP), which has been designed for remote control of electrochemical protection (EChP) parameters and their optimization as well as adaptive control of the parameters of cathodic protection stations while taking into account changes in external conditions. The multi-objective problem of optimizing the operating modes of cathodic protection stations (CPS) is considered because optimization is carried out according to both the criterion of optimal distribution of the protective potential (uniform distribution of the protective total (pipe-to-soil) potential along the length of the pipeline) and to the criterion of the minimum total protective current of stations. The structure of the distributed electrochemical protection system is described in the article. A more complete picture of the protection of the pipeline and solving the problems of optimizing the electrochemical protection modes in real time is possible due to remote monitoring of control and measuring points (CMP) in the middle of the pipeline between neighboring cathodic protection stations, as well as in all corrosion and hazardous zones where they are also installed. In addition to the often-used GSM/GPRS networks in electrochemical protection systems, an energy-efficient LPWAN (Low-Power Wide-Area Network) data transmission network is also used and data collection is carried out using a cloud IoT platform. The functionality of the system is described, web application screens are shown in various operating modes for remote monitoring and control of the protective parameters of cathodic protection stations is reported. Analytical data processing for the tasks assessing the protection of objects in the pipeline system against corrosion are also shown. The system ensures that the electrochemical protection process is maintained at an optimal level between the destructive zones of “underprotection” and “overprotection”, taking into account monitoring data, geological conditions at the pipeline site, climatic or seasonal changes and other factors. In general, this system provides an increase in the reliability of the electrochemical protection system as a whole and, accordingly, it prevents possible emergency situations on the pipeline system while also reducing the cost of pipeline maintenance due to the reliability and continuity of protection.

Abstract:In this paper, authors investigated the market of cyber-physical systems for pipeline diagnostics, revealed the features of the external environment of operation of these systems, which has a significant impact on the components of the system. Development prospects are assessed, the pros and cons of existing solutions are highlighted, and its structural scheme of CPS for pipeline diagnostics was proposed. The analysis and conclusions provide that the digital twin technology allows increasing not only the fault tolerance of the CPS for pipeline diagnostics itself, but also, in general, the level of technogenic safety at the facilities.

An Automatic Defect Detection System for Petrochemical Pipeline Based on Cycle-GAN and YOLO v5

Abstract:Defect detection of petrochemical pipelines is an important task for industrial production safety. At present, pipeline defect detection mainly relies on closed circuit television method (CCTV) to take video of the pipeline inner wall and then detect the defective area manually, so the detection is very time-consuming and has a high rate of false and missed detections. To solve the above issues, we proposed an automatic defect detection system for petrochemical pipeline based on Cycle-GAN and improved YOLO v5. Firstly, in order to create the pipeline defect dataset, the original pipeline videos need pre-processing, which includes frame extraction, unfolding, illumination balancing, and image stitching to create coherent and tiled pipeline inner wall images. Secondly, aiming at the problems of small amount of samples and the imbalance of defect and non-defect classes, a sample enhancement strategy based on Cycle-GAN is proposed to generate defect images and expand the data set. Finally, in order to detect defective areas on the pipeline and improve the detection accuracy, a robust defect detection model based on improved YOLO v5 and Transformer attention mechanism is proposed, with the average precision and recall as 93.10% and 90.96%, and the F1-score as 0.920 on the test set. The proposed system can provide reference for operators in pipeline health inspection, improving the efficiency and accuracy of detection.

Abstract:Ensuring the integrity, safety, and compliance of oil pipelines is crucial for operators. Two significant factors affecting pipeline integrity are metal loss due to corrosion or air gouging and the presence of cracks. This paper introduces an X-ray backscatter nondestructive testing model on a smart pig(an intelligent robot) for internal inspection of petroleum pipelines. The paper investigates the X-ray source and detection system, essential components of the backscatter imaging technology, to provide technical guidance for model design. The imaging system's layout is modeled using GEANT4, and its performance in detecting defects of various formats on pipe walls is studied. The research demonstrates the feasibility of using X-ray backscatter imaging for pipeline inspection and provides insights into different defect detection. The findings contribute to designing and optimizing the robot's scanning head for effective pipeline inspection.

Abstract:Pipelines used to transport oil and gas deteriorate with time due to various reasons including corrosion, deformation, cracking etc., So instead of critical-event based inspections, a means of continuous monitoring of pipelines to analyze its response as a function of time is required. Using real time data, this monitoring can be used as a means of prior warning of any unsafe condition of many types of nondestructive testing (NDT) techniques used for defect detection in pipelines, Ultrasonic testing (UT) is preferred because of its high accuracy, reliability, affordability and its capability of generating instant test report. UT works on the principle of pulse-echo method. As the received echo signal by transducer is noisy, it is generally processed using wavelet transforms and/or FFT. Later the signal is given to Artificial Neural Network (ANN) to distinguish signal with Non-Defect (ND) and signal with Defect (D). In this proposal, UT technique is used in pipeline monitoring during machining and real time work. Two calibration standards such as straight beam testing and angle beam testing are used to detect parallel defects and weld inspection respectively.

Abstract:Statement of the problem. The paper considers the process of complex periodic corrosion inspection in order to assess the effectiveness and improve the operational reliability of the corrosion protection system (CPS) using the example of on-site technological networks of the underground gas storage Elshanskaya. Results. The technical condition of the electrochemical protection means, the level of active protection and the technical condition of pipelines of the underground gas storage were assessed, the object was protected by its length and time, and zones of negative influence of constant and stray currents were identified. A method is proposed for determining the optimal number and locations of cathodic protection stations (CPS). Conclusions. Based on the research results, a commissioning method is proposed that provides the optimal technological mode of operation of electrochemical protection means (EChP), and proposals have been developed to ensure the effectiveness of diagnostics and the safety of further operation of gas distribution pipelines. The implementation of this approach in the design of EChP facilities can lead to a significant reduction in energy consumption during operation.
