Abstract:Indoor target localization is pivotal across various applications, encompassing security monitoring, behavioral analysis, and elderly care. This work proposes an advanced target localization algorithm that harnesses antennas endowed with sensing capabilities to capture the phase change in the signal ratio, derived from the signal amplitude. This phase change, indicative of the target's movement direction, is analyzed alongside the front and rear arrival angle information and signal amplitude characteristics obtained from LoRa signals. The algorithm, through a comprehensive examination of the phase change patterns, amalgamated with arrival angle data and signal amplitude characteristics, effectively estimates the precise location of the target. Experimental validations underscore the algorithm's efficacy in determining the target's location during continuous walking activity. Conducted within a 6 m × 12 m open platform, the algorithm achieves an average localization error of 48.5 cm, underscoring its superior performance compared to existing methodologies.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to achieve contact - free target localization and tracking in an indoor environment. Specifically, the paper proposes a target localization algorithm based on Long - Range (LoRa) signals, aiming to overcome the limitations in existing localization technologies, such as the inconvenience of wearable sensors and the privacy implications of computer vision methods. By utilizing the phase change and signal amplitude characteristics of LoRa signals, combined with the angle - of - arrival data, this algorithm can accurately estimate the position of the target, and is especially suitable for target localization in continuous walking activities. ### Main contributions of the paper: 1. **Accurate target position estimation**: By analyzing the phase change data of LoRa signals and combining the signal amplitude features, this algorithm can estimate the target position more accurately. In particular, by extracting the direction - related details in the signal amplitude and using the dynamic path change information, the localization accuracy within the specified area is improved. 2. **Model without prior measurement**: This method realizes target localization without prior measurement of the detection area by integrating the Multiple Signal Classification (MUSIC) algorithm and the phase change information of LoRa signals. The experimental results show that in an outdoor space of 6m × 12m, the average localization error of this algorithm is 48.5cm. ### Problems solved: - **Limitations of traditional localization methods**: Existing target localization methods, such as wearable sensors and computer vision methods, have disadvantages such as inconvenience in use, privacy issues, and high cost. - **Application of LoRa signals in wireless sensing**: Although LoRa signals perform well in long - distance communication, their application in the field of wireless sensing is relatively scarce. The paper explores the potential of LoRa signals in target localization, especially in indoor and outdoor environments. - **Improving localization accuracy and practicality**: The algorithm proposed in the paper achieves decimeter - level localization accuracy within a relatively large sensing range (6m × 12m), and at the same time only requires one receiving antenna, reducing the complexity and cost of the device. ### Experimental verification: - **Experimental platform**: Experiments are carried out on an open platform of 6m × 12m. - **Performance evaluation**: The experimental results show that the average error of this algorithm in target localization during continuous walking activities is 48.5cm, which is better than existing methods. In conclusion, this paper proposes an advanced target localization algorithm based on LoRa signals, which solves the limitations of existing localization technologies in indoor environment applications and provides a new solution for contact - free target localization and tracking.
