Abstract:Purpose This exploratory study seeks to understand whether an arts event designed with/by/for disabled people (the InterACT Disability Arts Festival in New Zealand) has the potential to create revolutionary futures, defined as those which help determine new paths, make the future less fearsome and allow more positive outcomes. Design/methodology/approach A qualitative approach was taken in this study. Interviews were carried out with ten disabled event attendees, two support workers, one family member, four event volunteers, two activity providers and the main event organiser of the 2019 festival. Active participant observation was also used to collect data. Deductive thematic analysis was used to determine themes and subthemes in the material. Findings The findings suggest the case study arts event does help to create revolutionary futures for disabled attendees through disrupting the narratives of disability, making sense of lives lived and changing lives yet to be lived. Research limitations/implications Limited windows of opportunity were available to interact with attendees, and just 17 in-the-moment interviews were conducted. However, the findings still have value as data saturation was reached. A "revolutionary futures" conceptual framework is presented to understand the nexus between disability worlds and events and thus amplify the benefits for attendees. Originality/value Research carried out to date has provided much-needed understanding about the challenges facing disabled people at events, but this study turns this deficit approach around to focus on the opportunities provided by event participation.

Abstract:THE brilliant celebration of its three hundredth anniversary by the University of Edinburgh last week suggests some reflections on the connection between University progress and the growth of Science. One of the most remarkable features in these festive proceedings has been the preponderance given to the recognition of the claims of scientific research to University distinction. A hundred years ago and less, had such a gathering been thought of, the great men who would have been invited to receive the highest academic honours would have been learned scholars, eminent professors of the mediaeval branches of education, with perhaps a few distinguished medical men and doubtless a good many candidates whose only claim would have been the possession of a hereditary title of nobility. But now a new host of competitors has arisen, and upon them have the laurels of the University been mainly bestowed. Physicists, chemists, physiologists, botanists, geologists, and other representatives of modern science have almost elbowed the older philosophies out of the field. In the pæan sung at every meeting of the festival the brilliance of scientific discovery, the prowess of scientific discoverers, and the glory shed on the University by its connection with both have been the chief themes.

Three Decades of Universal Design - Defining Moments

Abstract:This paper contributes to the growing research on incorporating Universal Design in the Higher Education landscape by presenting a Practitioner's Perspective on Universal Design as delivered in the Institute of Technology, Blanchardstown (ITB) in the first year of a creative digital media degree as part of the first year experience. This first year experience is a transition time for many students and has many complexities; while being an exciting and fulfilling time, the transition can also be challenging and isolating. Through Universal Design, the aim is to enable students to 'Get connected' and 'Stay connected'. Universal Design for Learning is explored through changes in curriculum design as a means of enhancing student engagement [1]. The Universal Design framework is structured into three strands; providing multiple means of representation; providing multiple means of action and expression and providing multiple means of engagements. The broader perspectives of Universal Design are considered at Institutional level. Resources, practices and attitudes, Michael Fullan suggests, are the three critical elements required for change to occur [2]. 'The Power of Moments' [3] and why certain experiences have extraordinary impact, coupled with underpinning Universal Design for Learning guidelines is considered in curriculum design and how they may enable meaningful engagements.The role of creativity and innovation suggests a way of interlacing universal design with the power of moments, acknowledging the critical elements for change to move from UDL exploration to integration. This paper highlights case studies where all these interrelated forces intertwine with emotional learning and how embedding Universal Design enables transformation. These are design models and are still to be evaluated.
Creative Collaboration: Processes and Methods for Studying The Glasgow School of Art Fashion Show

Abstract:Textiles and fashion related studies have been part of the educational activities at The Glasgow School of Art (GSA) since its establishment in 1845, as a branch of the Government School of Design. In 2017, GSA celebrated the 70th anniversary of its student-led Fashion Show, introduced in 1947 as an event during Charities Week. Today, this annual event presents undergraduate fashion and textile students' designs for fundraising purposes. This presentation centers on a collaborative project between GSA's Department of Fashion and Textiles, Archives and Collections, and Alumni Relations, which resulted in a small-scale exhibition and alumni event. The project aimed to identify Fashion Show related material held by GSA Archives and Collections; locate and accession other relevant artefacts and insights from GSA alumni; construct a history of the event; examine the Fashion Show as pedagogical approach; establish areas for further investigation from studying this local event. The presentation will focus on the project methodology, which is potentially transferable to other creative arts contexts. Methods include historical and archival enquiry, documentary and visual analysis, and participant engagement towards exhibition curation. The project findings, lessons learnt from working together on the project, and areas for further investigation will be discussed.

Instrumentation and Methods for Astrophysics

Abstract:We describe our experiment with an alternate approach to presenting cosmic ray research. The goal was to more widely promote cosmic ray research and attract diverse audiences, especially those from groups that are underrepresented in science or that do not have experience attending science outreach events. The IceCube Neutrino Observatory education and outreach team brought together local teenagers, internationally accomplished artists, science communicators, and scientists to produce an interactive gallery exhibit, Messages, that explores the cosmic ray community and science. The artists collaborated with the scientists and students to create two original installations that will be displayed at the UW-Madison Memorial Union Gallery for six weeks, from mid-June, 2019, through the end of the International Cosmic Ray Conference 2019. Event Horizon by Abdu'Allah with Ladoni features portraits of cosmic ray researchers and high school students who are learning more about the field. This installation will examine the science community as it is and as it could be. Messages from the Horizon by Hosale with Madsen is inspired by previous immersive works. It combines sound and light to explore what we know and how we know it.

Abstract:This presentation proposal advances a pedagogical case study that focuses on innovative ways of promoting visual literacy for undergraduate students through lens-based image-making and digital technologies. The curriculum was designed to be delivered throughout an academic semester at Auckland University of Technology South Campus, Manukau City, Aotearoa New Zealand. The content is formatted for first-year students of the Diploma in Arts endorsed in Communication Design. The Diploma in Arts is appealing to students who may be seeking a shorter design qualification. In addition, the programme provides for students who have not met or have narrowly missed University Entrance (UE) criteria. The presentation focuses on the structure and contents of the pedagogical experience where lecturers and students are connected in the design studio through agency and literacy rather than just observing pedagogical prescriptions. In this active environment, the hidden curriculum that deals with the participant's cultural background and natural epistemologies is valued and validated. In creating the engagement for visual literacy, the brief requires students to consider aspects of community, taking the role of a storyteller equipped with skills to create visual content that is meaningful and actual. The course is divided into two parallel design studio approaches: one that deals with visual literacy through the photographic image and practice; and the other is concerned with aspects of the nature of the media, augmented reality and image dissemination in digital platforms. The first area focused on visual literacy through photographic practice, using the politics of photographic language and representation, employing portraiture analysis and image creation. This approach encompasses the conceptual aspects associated with photographic images and the technical aspects of lens-based image-making. The second area focused on understanding digital media, the application of tools and how to take advantage of the interactive environment to promote awareness and reflect change in the community. This part of the brief intended to create an understanding of the issues associated with online environments, providing students with skills to operate creatively and fluidly in response to the fast-paced nature of online image-sharing platforms. Within this context, techniques of digital image construction and manipulation were investigated in the light of industry applications and best practice workflows. These learning areas were underpinned by an online blog where students actively recorded their design process, tests, and contextual influences that impacted their design practice. The studio environment fostered an inclusive and participatory form of teaching and learning and employed students' smartphones as an accessible tool to produce and understand images. The project contributes to knowledge about the design studio through a framework for Visual literacy and media education, where students learn principles of photography practice and digital technologies. It contributes to reflections about the use of mobile phone technologies as a common entry way apparatus to visual literacy and imagery generator.
ESSYS* Sharing #UC: An Emotion-driven Audiovisual Installation

Abstract:We present ESSYS* Sharing #UC, an audiovisual installation artwork that reflects upon the emotional context related to the university and the city of Coimbra, based on the data shared about them on Twitter. The installation was presented in an urban art gallery of Círculo de Artes Plásticas de Coimbra during the summer and autumn of 2021. In the installation space, one may see a collection of typographic posters displaying the tweets and listening to an ever-changing ambient sound. The present audiovisuals are created by an autonomous computational creative approach, which employs a neural classifier to recognize the emotional context of a tweet and uses this resulting data as feedstock for the audiovisual generation. The installation's space is designed to promote an approach and blend between the online and physical perceptions of the same location. We applied multiple experiments with the proposed approach to evaluate the capability and performance. Also, we conduct interview-based evaluation sessions to understand how the installation elements, especially poster designs, are experienced by people regarding diversity, expressiveness and possible employment in other commercial and social scenarios.

Abstract:How can contemporary light art installations impact the sensorial perception of the urban context to modify and reinterpret urban space? In Robert Irwin's words, how can they provide "...an extended way of looking at the world"? In this paper, we examine how temporary light installations may impact the public realm by modifying citizens' perceptions of moments in the city: a habitual urban passage is interrupted with a temporal experience, changing the way the urban space is experienced. We explore how site-specific light installations create unique intersections of audience and spatial perception through the artists' intent of creating new urban atmospheres through an experiential layer added onto the urban fabric during light festivals. To do so we analyze and discuss two light installations that we designed and executed, which were shortlisted for the 2022 [d]arc awards. Both projects took part in larger urban light festivals and were located within urban passages. "Reflecting on Troy" [Author 1 - Troy Glow Light Festival] created a temporal light graffiti in an urban alley, while "Riddle 102" [Authors 2,3 - Nobel Week Lights], a dynamic lighting installation in a 231m pedestrian tunnel, created an immersive environment that alters the perception of the tunnel's physical dimensions. Through reflections, as well as visitor and curator reviews, we unpack the intent and impact of the works on the perception of the urban context. We discuss and analyze the similarities and differences between the two urban settings, identify the design processes and principles pertinent to site-specific light installations [materials, lighting fixtures, testing] and address the impact darkness and over-lit spaces have over spatial perception. Lastly we discuss the impact a temporary light installation may have on the collective memory of the city, perceived in person or online.

Abstract:Considering the content and complex structure of design education, it is important to include the making, body, and movement in design pedagogy. In this context, thinking design with theatre opens to an aggregation of opportunities for thinking holistically and creatively about the character, elements, functioning, and the outcomes of the first-year design studio. This chapter presents a pedagogical approach for the first-year design studio through a final project, Theatre Space, which was devised as an integrated seven-week process of comprehending, interpreting, designing, fabricating, and performing Samuel Beckett's Quad 1+2, with all its components such as stage and décor, costume, accessories, makeup, light, sound, and performance. Students from the Departments of Architecture, Interior Architecture, and Industrial Design had a chance to display how they internalised and applied basic principles of design in their drawings, sketches, diagrams, writings, and collages, as well as the final physical products in 1/1 scale within a performative exhibition: Anti-Quad.

Abstract:Abstract Within the frame of the study field of Aesthetics at Faculty of Arts Prešov University in Prešov, the students have an opportunity to acquire abilities and skills also in creative artistic activities. One of the possibilities is to participate in the creative workshops as the part of Academic Prešov Festival that is very popular with the participants. The actors of a creative workshop can experience, in a short period of time (mostly weekly), an intense creative process in which a young undergraduate student headed by a professional, in the amateur communication with a professional, can experience an unrepeatable experience of creativity, creation of theatrical work as well as the distinctive level of theatrical communication on the axis of participant-lecture-process-making-theatrical work-viewer. In this way, he discovers potential artistic, authentic, and generationally specific dispositions.
Rendering the paradoxes and pleasures of academic life: using images, poetry and drama to speak back to the measured university

Abstract:Measurement of academic work has become more significant than the intellectual, pedagogical, cultural, political and social practices in which academics and students engage. This shifting emphasis creates paradoxes for academics. They experience a growing sense of disconnection between their desires to develop students into engaged, disciplined and critical citizens and the activities that appear to count in the enterprise university. As measurement discourses preclude the possibilities of human emotion and hinder intellectual labour, we embarked on an arts-informed research project that established new creative spaces for our colleagues to illustrate the pleasures and paradoxes of their academic work. In the research project, we developed critical pedagogies through art and poetry that enabled academics to speak back to university management – and each other – about how they experience their work. In this paper, we draw upon poststructural ‘micro-physics’ of power, the poststructuralist ‘politics of reinscription’, and art, poetry and drama as critical pedagogies to interrogate the potential of arts-informed research to speak back to the measured university. The key contribution of this article is to recommend arts-informed methodologies as a forum for dissent and resistance at a time when the spaces of collegiality, pleasure and democracy in the measured university are under attack.

Abstract:The existential, experiential, ethical, pathic and pre-pathic dimensions of education are essential for the creative composition of subjectivities in institutional spaces, yet educational research and policy tend increasingly to privilege technical discourses and prescriptive approaches both when evaluating ‘what is effective in education’ and when determining educational policy. This essay explores those aspects of the educational experience and educational institutions that are often felt and sensed pre-cognitively by students, parents and teachers, but are seldom given further elaboration or articulation in educational research. We will reflect on what is meant by the experience of education and experience in education, including the struggles to make sense of or understand something, the surprises that strike pre-reflectively, and the ways in which such moments are noticed, pursued, and explored rather than reflexively ‘evaluated’. We then explore the idea of experimentation in institutions, in particular in relation to the range of concepts that Jean Oury introduces in order to move our attention and awareness to questions of experience, existence, atmosphere, and the pathic—the way in which we undergo, sense and participate in the world prior to cognition and the desire for mastery and control of our encounters. Finally, we address the question of the ethics of institutions.

Abstract:: Places are defined by the people who live within them. As individuals and communities, deep significance is attached to familiar places, and complex relationships can develop between the residents and the place that they inhabit. This quality is present in the nature of the buildings and the streets, It is often generated by the ordinary actions of local people, many of who believe that their identity is essentially tied to the place that they occupy. This local distinctiveness is characterized by the activities that occur within the specific environment. Thus significant markers are formed, in both the present and in the past, which will allow a society to relate to a particular environment. Events that hold value in a community are often manifested in physical form, and therefore allow a population to trace back meanings and connections with their past. This organisation of the past seems to stimulate social cohesion and the feeling of being part of a community, and so, physical links with the past are often important elements within the cohesion of a community.

Abstract:Studies of group creativity have focused on adults acting in professional settings, with less attention paid to how adolescents collaborate in groups in creative activities. Building on sociocultural perspectives on imagination as a complex capacity in adolescence, this study examines students’ creative-imagining processes and the role of peer influence in group collaboration. The setting of the study is a two-day museum-led workshop on the topic of architecture, which was produced for a national touring program for middle schools. Video data of students’ collaborative interactions comprise the primary data for the analysis. The study identifies material, institutional and relational aspects of group creativity in adolescence. A key finding is how creative influence is socially negotiated when merit-based knowledge and authority in an art domain are not valued. The study also finds that students’ interactions in creative activity may be viewed as evidence of learning processes even without consensus in the group. This research contributes new understandings of adolescents’ creative-imagining processes and creative influence in arts-based learning activities in middle school. Principles for arts-based learning designs are presented:the appropriateness of materials; designing for knowledge dependency in open-ended tasks; and facilitating productive forms of creative influence.

Augmenting visual design: Designing the changing classroom

Abstract:Art and design undergraduate educational programmes such as Graphic Design studies are based upon best practice within the Graphic Design industry. Thus, the classroom environment is designed to mirror a typical design studio environment. However, traditional design studio interaction and collaboration are undergoing rapid transformation in practice triggered by an increasingly global digitally networked professional environment. In response, this paper outlines our journey of redesigning an undergraduate graphic design curriculum to enable students to engage beyond the context of the classroom to a potentially global audience. Over two redesign iterations Visual Communication Design students explored new technologies including mobile augmented reality and virtual reality to enhance the reach and impact of their portfolios of work. Using the concept of Visual Poetry and a combination of typography and moving image, the students created a range of art pieces inspired by a specific location, and shared these via an ecology of resources chosen to digitally augment their work and facilitate the production of student eportfolios. The goal of the curriculum redesign is to broaden students’ educational experiences beyond the confines of the traditional studio based classroom to include wider community outreach and participation within an increasingly global environment.

Abstract:The Festivalization of Culture explores the links between various local and global cultures, communities, identities and lifestyle narratives as they are both constructed and experienced in the festival context. Drawing on a wide range of case studies from Australia and Europe, festivals are examined as sites for the performance and critique of lifestyle, identity and cultural politics; as vehicles for the mobilization and cementation of local and global communities; and as spatio-temporal events that inspire and determine meaning in people's lives. Investigating the manner in which festivals are no longer merely periodic, cultural, religious or historical events within communities, but rather a popular means through which citizens consume and experience culture, this book also sheds light on the increasing diversity of contemporary societies and the role played by festivals as sites of cohesion, cultural critique and social mobility. As such, this book will be of interest to those working in areas such as the sociology, consumption and commodification of culture, social and cultural geography, anthropology, cultural studies and popular music studies.
The spatial ontologies of interstitial spaces: Insights from Belfast's "interfaces" and the spatialization of the in-betweenness

Abstract:Cities are composed of a varied array of interstices that are often observed as a network of undeveloped, vacant, or leftover spaces and infrastructures. Such conditions, however, little speak on the multifaceted nature of interstitial spaces as in-between domains that can be morphologically heterogeneous, functionally active, and socially constructed; something that expands on the multiple ontologies of interstitiality beyond being vacant, empty, or inert. While acknowledged around their development potentials or as elements of segregation, the physicality of interstices obscures their evolving spatiality between conflict and divide, relationality, and acceptance. This spatiality becomes plausible in post-conflict cities—such as Belfast—where interstitiality takes the form of "interfaces": complex in-between areas that articulate divided Catholic/Nationalist and Protestant/Unionist communities throughout peacebuilding politics. By taking a phenomenological approach, the spatiality and meanings of Belfast interfaces are scrutinised to find that Belfast interfaces speak on multiple ontologies linked to (i) their evolving spatiality, (ii) their constructed meanings, and (iii) their naturalisation as daily-life transitions that draw on emerging forms of safety, identity, memory, integration, segregation and futurity. Belfast interfaces take the ontological turn of the in-betweenness towards suggesting that the staging of spaces as promoting togetherness can be more illusionary than concrete.

Abstract:This article explores how two rural arts festivals, one in the town of Boyle (Boyle Arts Festival), in Western Ireland and the other in the municipality of Mäntyharju, (Salmela Festival) Eastern Finland, contribute to the development of their respective localities and communities via two different models of festival implementation. Both festivals have a major focus on visual art along with other events such as music and enjoy strong reputations for promoting quality artistic experiences. Drawing on the concepts of cultural capital, resilience and resourcefulness, the article investigates how the arts can work in providing wide‐ranging possibilities for engaging with local development activities and shaping local development agendas in diverse and changing rural contexts. The research is based on semi‐structured interviews with 15 festival contributors and individuals in institutional support roles. It finds that an emphasis on community‐focused, quality of life priorities that is a feature of the Boyle festival increasingly presents challenges to sourcing funding, and that an entrepreneurial approach applied in the case of the Salmela festival, while economically successful, does not provide the same scope for community participation. Both approaches have implications for the ways the festivals impact on local development processes.

Abstract:Design is a social phenomenon and researchers suggest that negotiations and communications between designers are essential to initiate creativity. Within the design studio environment, a number of factors affect the healthy social interaction and design negotiations, such as the teaching style of tutors and the culture that governs a design studio environment. This may, in turn, affect the utilisation of the outcome of negotiations in the design project. Design studio students from the third to fifth years at the College of Architecture, UoD were surveyed to find out how far the design studio culture and communications would impact on the production of innovative design projects. The results show that democratic communications and establishing common grounds are essential to develop knowledge and would influence positively the design outcome. On the other hand, the research found that negative personal and design studio environment’s qualities would hinder students’ creativity. However, to develop students’ design/innovative abilities, the researcher recommends that certain measures should be considered. These would include shifting the focus of architectural design pedagogy from the production of solution-based to innovative-based design projects, transforming the design studio into an interactive and friendly learning environment and the development of interactive and communications skills of tutors.

Abstract:Physical spaces are a critical component for a sound human education, the true mission of universities. History has demonstrated that the most relevant paradigms have been generated under two essential influences: the human imprint, in terms of the affective conditioning of exemplary cases, placing the core of the educational activity in the human being, and spatial projection, where institutions have shown their intentions, centripetal or centrifugal, encompassing both inner areas or those belonging to the urban and social context. This article sets out an interpretation of exemplary university cases: quadrangle, yard, and campus, as identified in some historical institutions: Emmanuel College (Cambridge, England), Harvard College, College of William & Mary, Union College, University of Virginia, and Stanford University (in the USA).
