Abstract:The aim of this text is to extend the theory of generalized ordinary differential equations to the setting of metric spaces. We present existence and uniqueness theorems that significantly improve previous results even when restricted back to Euclidean spaces.

Abstract:This is the first of two works concerning the Sobolev calculus on metric measure spaces and its applications. In this work, we focus on several notions of metric Sobolev space and on their equivalence. More precisely, we give a systematic presentation of first-order p -Sobolev spaces, with , defined over a complete and separable metric space equipped with a boundedly- finite Borel measure. We focus on three different approaches: via approximation with Lipschitz functions; by studying the behaviour along curves, in terms either of the curve modulus or of test plans; via integration-by-parts, using Lipschitz derivations with divergence. Eventually, we show that all these approaches are fully equivalent. We emphasise that no doubling or Poincaré assumption is made, and that we allow also for the exponent . A substantial part of this work consists of a self-contained and partially-revisited exposition of known results, which are scattered across the existing literature, but it contains also several new results, mostly concerning the equivalence of metric Sobolev spaces for .

Abstract:Generalized Functions play a central role in the understanding of differential equations containing singularities and nonlinearities. Introducing infinitesimals and infinities to deal with these obstructions leads to controversies concerning the existence, rigor and the amount of non-standard analysis needed to understand these theories. Milieus constructed over the generalized reals sidestep them all. A Riemannian manifold M embeds discretely into a generalized manifold $M^*$ on which singularities vanish and products of nonlinearities make sense. Linking this to an already existing global theory provides an algebra embedding $\kappa :\hat{\cal{G}}(M)\longrightarrow {\cal{C}}^{\infty}(M^*,\widetilde{\mathbb{R}}_f)$. Generalized Space-Time is constructed and its possible effects on Classical Space-Time are examined.

On generalized metrics of Vandermonde type

Abstract:In a series of papers in the 1960's, S. Gähler defined and investigated so-called m-metric spaces and their topological properties. An m-metric assigns to any tuple of m+1 elements a real value (more generally an element in a partially odered set) which satisfies the generalized metric axioms of semidefiniteness, symmetry, and simplex inequality. In this contribution we consider a new type of generalized metric which is based on the Vandermonde determinant. We present some remarkable geometric consequences of the corresponding simplex inequality in the complex plane. Then we show that the Vandermonde principle of construction extends to linear spaces of arbitrary dimension by using symmetric multilinear maps of degree m(m + 1)/2. In particular, we analyze when this generalized metrics has the stronger property of definiteness. Finally, an application is provided to the m-metric of point sets when driven by the same linear ordinary differential equation.

Abstract:For a surface immersed in a three-dimensional space endowed with a norm instead of an inner product, one can define analogous concepts of curvature and metric. With these concepts in mind, various questions immediately appear. The aim of this paper is to propose and answer some of those questions. In this framework we prove several characterizations of minimal surfaces, and analogues of some global theorems (e.g., Hadamard-type theorems) are also derived. A result on the curvature of surfaces of constant Minkowski width is also given. Finally, we study the ambient metric induced on the surface, proving an extension of the classical Bonnet theorem.

Abstract:We present developments in the theory of Korevaar-Schoen-Sobolev spaces on metric measure spaces. While this theory coincides with those of Cheeger and Shanmugalingam if the space is doubling and satisfies a Poincar\'e inequality, it offers new perspectives in the context of fractals for which the approach by weak upper gradients is inadequate.

Abstract:In this paper, an approach for generalizing the Gromov-Hausdorff metric is presented, which applies to metric spaces equipped with some additional structure. A special case is the Gromov-Hausdorff-Prokhorov metric between measured metric spaces. This abstract framework unifies several existing Gromov-Hausdorff-type metrics for metric spaces equipped with a measure, a point, a closed subset, a curve, a tuple of such structures, etc. Along with reviewing these special cases in the literature, several new examples are also presented. Two frameworks are provided, one for compact metric spaces and the other for boundedly-compact pointed metric spaces. In both cases, a Gromov-Hausdorff-type metric is defined and its topological properties are studied. In particular, completeness and separability is proved under some conditions. This enables one to study random metric spaces equipped with additional structures, which is the main motivation of this work.

Abstract:Eikonal equations in metric spaces have strong connections with the local slope operator (or the De Giorgi slope). In this manuscript, we explore and delve into an analogous model based on the global slope operator, expressed as $\lambda u + G[u] = \ell$, where $\lambda \geq 0$. In strong contrast with the classical theory, the global slope operator relies neither on the local properties of the functions nor on the structure of the space, and therefore new insights are developed in order to analyze the above equation. Under mild assumptions on the metric space $X$ and the given data $\ell$, we primarily discuss: $(a)$ the existence and uniqueness of (pointwise) solutions; $(b)$ a viscosity perspective and the employment of Perron's method to consider the maximal solution; $(c)$ stability of the maximal solution with respect to both, the data $\ell$ and the discount factor $\lambda$. Our techniques provide a method to approximate solutions of Eikonal equations in metric spaces and a new integration formula based on the global slope of the given function.

Abstract:The local slope operator was introduced in De Giorgi et al. (Atti Accad Naz Lincei Rend Cl Sci Fis Mat Nat 68:180–187, 1980) to study gradient flow dynamics in metric spaces. This tool has now become a cornerstone in metric evolution equations (see, e.g., Ambrosio et al. (Gradient flows in metric spaces and in the space of probability measures, Lectures in Mathematics. Birkhauser, 2008). Very recently, in Daniilidis and Salas (Proc Am Math Soc 150:4325–4333, 2022), it was established that Lipschitz inf-compact functions are uniquely determined by their local slope and critical values. Compactness played a paramount role in this result, ensuring in particular the existence of critical points. We hereby emancipate from this restriction and establish a determination result for merely bounded from below functions, by adding an assumption controlling the asymptotic behavior. This assumption is trivially fulfilled if f is inf-compact. In addition, our result is not only valid for the (De Giorgi) local slope, but also for the main paradigms of average descent operators as well as for the global slope, case in which the asymptotic assumption becomes superfluous. Therefore, the present work extends simultaneously the metric determination results of Daniilidis and Salas (Proc Am Math Soc 150:4325–4333, 2022) and Thibault and Zagrodny (Commun Contemp Math 25(7):2250014, 2023).

Abstract:There have been many attempts to generalize the definition of a metric space in order to obtain possibilities for more general fixed point results. In this paper, we give a survey of recent results on reducing fixed point theorems on generalized metric spaces to fixed point theorems on metric spaces and then investigate this fact in other generalized metric spaces. We show that many generalized metric spaces are topologically equivalent to certain metric spaces or to previously generalized metric spaces. Also, the fixed point theory in these generalized metric spaces may be a consequence of the fixed point theory in certain metric spaces or in previously generalized metric spaces.

Abstract:We adapt the classical theory of local well-posedness of evolution problems to cases in which the nonlinearity can be accurately quantified by two different norms. For ordinary differential equations, we consider $\dot{x} = f(x,x)$ for a function $f: V\times E \to E$ where $E$ is a Banach space and $V \hookrightarrow E$ a normed vector space. This structure allows us to distinguish between the two dependencies of $f$ in $x$ and allows to generalize classical results. We also prove a similar results for partial differential equations.

Abstract:This article presents the beginning of a metric functional analysis. A major notion is metric functionals which extends that of horofunctions in metric geometry. Applications of the main tools are found in a wide variety of subjects such as random walks on groups, complex dynamics, surface topology, deep learning, evolution equations, and game theory, thus branching well outside of pure mathematics. In several cases, linear notions fail to describe linear phenomena that are naturally captured by metric concepts. An extension of the mean ergodic theorem testifies to this. A general metric fixed-point theorem is also proved.

Abstract:Reparametrization invariant Sobolev metrics on spaces of regular curves have been shown to be of importance in the field of mathematical shape analysis. For practical applications, one usually discretizes the space of smooth curves and considers the induced Riemannian metric on a finite dimensional approximation space. Surprisingly, the theoretical properties of the corresponding finite dimensional Riemannian manifolds have not yet been studied in detail, which is the content of the present article. Our main theorem concerns metric and geodesic completeness and mirrors the results of the infinite dimensional setting as obtained by Bruveris, Michor and Mumford.

Abstract:Since the first edition of this book, geometrical methods in the theory of ordinary differential equations have become very popular and some progress has been made partly with the help of computers. Much of this progress is represented in this revised, expanded edition, including such topics as the Feigenbaum universality of period doubling, the Zoladec solution, the Iljashenko proof, the Ecalle and Voronin theory, the Varchenko and Hovanski theorems, and the Neistadt theory. In the selection of material for this book, the author explains basic ideas and methods applicable to the study of differential equations. Special efforts were made to keep the basic ideas free from excessive technicalities. Thus the most fundamental questions are considered in great detail, while of the more special and difficult parts of the theory have the character of a survey. Consequently, the reader needs only a general mathematical knowledge to easily follow this text. It is directed to mathematicians, as well as all users of the theory of differential equations.

Abstract:The twistor construction for Riemannian manifolds is extended to the case of manifolds endowed with generalized metrics (in the sense of generalized geometry à la Hitchin). The generalized twistor space associated to such a manifold is defined as the bundle of generalized complex structures on the tangent spaces of the manifold compatible with the given generalized metric. This space admits natural generalized almost complex structures whose integrability conditions are found in the paper. An interesting feature of the generalized twistor spaces discussed in it is the existence of intrinsic isomorphisms.

Abstract:This paper initiates the study of the Einstein equation on homogeneous supermanifolds. First, we produce explicit curvature formulas for graded Riemannian metrics on these spaces. Next, we present a construction of homogeneous supermanifolds by means of Dynkin diagrams, resembling the construction of generalised flag manifolds in classical (non-super) theory. We describe the Einstein metrics on several classes of spaces obtained through this approach. Our results provide examples of compact homogeneous supermanifolds on which the Einstein equation has no solutions, discrete families of solutions, and continuous families of Ricci-flat solutions among invariant metrics. These examples demonstrate that the finiteness conjecture from classical homogeneous geometry fails on supermanifolds, and challenge the intuition furnished by Bochner's vanishing theorem.

Abstract:We propose the metric for general rotating spacetimes. These spacetimes are stationary, axially symmetric and spatially asymptotically flat. They can be the spacetimes outside of rotating black holes or rotating celestial bodies such as the Sun and the Earth.
