Abstract:Due to the wide implementation of communication networks, industrial control systems are vulnerable to malicious attacks, which could cause potentially devastating results. Adversaries launch integrity attacks by injecting false data into systems to create fake events or cover up the plan of damaging the systems. In addition, the complexity and nonlinearity of control systems make it more difficult to detect attacks and defense it. Therefore, a novel security situation awareness framework based on particle filtering, which has good ability in estimating state for nonlinear systems, is proposed to provide an accuracy understanding of system situation. First, a system state estimation based on particle filtering is presented to estimate nodes state. Then, a voting scheme is introduced into hazard situation detection to identify the malicious nodes and a local estimator is constructed to estimate the actual system state by removing the identified malicious nodes. Finally, based on the estimated actual state, the actual measurements of the compromised nodes are predicted by using the situation prediction algorithm. At the end of this paper, a simulation of a continuous stirred tank is conducted to verify the efficiency of the proposed framework and algorithms.

Abstract:This paper addresses a distributed nonlinear filtering issue based on maximum correntropy for dealing with randomly occurring hybrid cyber‐attacks in non‐Gaussian environment. The types of cyber‐attacks include denial of service attacks and deception attacks. First, a modified distributed unscented Kalman filter is proposed, using Cauchy kernel‐based maximum correntropy criterion instead of the traditional mean square error criterion, against cyber‐attacks and non‐Gaussian noise. Then based on fixed‐point iterative rules and information fusion strategy, the update equations of state estimates and covariance matrices of the proposed filter are obtained. Furthermore, the sufficient condition guaranteeing its convergence and computational complexity are also given. Finally, an illustrative example is presented to verify the effectiveness of the proposed filter under hybrid cyber‐attacks in non‐Gaussian environment.

Abstract:This article addresses the distributed model-free adaptive control (DMFAC) problem for learning nonlinear multiagent systems (MASs) subjected to denial-of-service (DoS) attacks. An improved dynamic linearization method is proposed to obtain an equivalent linear data model for learning systems. To alleviate the influence of DoS attacks, an attack compensation mechanism is developed. Based on the equivalent linear data model and the attack compensation mechanism, a novel learning-based DMFAC algorithm is developed to resist DoS attacks, which provides a unified framework to solve the leaderless consensus control, the leader-following consensus control, and the containment control problems. Finally, simulation examples are shown to illustrate the effectiveness of the developed DMFAC algorithm.

Abstract:This paper addresses the distributed resilient filtering problem for a class of power systems subject to denial-of-service (DoS) attacks. A novel distributed filter is first constructed to practically reflect the impact from both cyber-attacks and gain perturbations. For all possible occurrence of DoS attacks and gain perturbations, an upper bound of filtering error covariance is derived by resorting to some typical matrix inequalities. Furthermore, the desired filter gain relying on the solution of two Riccati-like difference equations is obtained with the help of the gradient-based approach and the mathematical induction. The developed algorithm with a recursive form is independent of the global information and thus satisfies the requirements of scalability and distributed implementation online. Finally, a benchmark simulation test is exploited to check the usefulness of the designed filter.

Abstract:This article focuses on the distributed adaptive consensus control problem for nonlinear systems with unknown parameters and denial-of-service (DoS) attacks. The communication channels among subsystems are directed and DoS attacks are executed on subsystems to jam the communication transmission. Besides, only part of these subsystems can access states of the desired reference system. To actively alleviate attack effects on the consensus performance, a distributed adaptive consensus control scheme with an active-defense mechanism is proposed. The active-defense mechanism consists of an attack-detection algorithm and a switching strategy. The distributed adaptive consensus controller is designed with normalized damping terms in control inputs and parameter update laws. In the presence of DoS attacks, a stability condition is derived based on the designed control scheme, which guarantees that the consensus errors are globally uniformly bounded under arbitrary switching dwell-time. Experimental results are provided to validate the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme with the active-defense mechanism.

Abstract:The problem of distributed filtering for discrete-time periodic non-linear systems over sensor networks in the presence of jumping uncertainties and unreliable channels is investigated in this study. A random variable which is subject to a Markov chain is introduced to govern the jumping uncertainties. Considering the unreliable channels between the system and filters, a discrete-time fading model is introduced to describe this channel fading phenomenon with the discrete probability distribution of each channel coefficients known a priori. On the basis of a fixed network topology, by establishing the periodic Lyapunov function, sufficient conditions on the existence of distributed filter are proposed to ensure the stability and dissipativity of the filtering error system. The distributed filter for discrete-time periodic non-linear systems is designed via solving a set of linear matrix inequalities. The merits and validity of the proposed design techniques are verified by means of a numerical simulation example.

Abstract:In this article, the dissipativity-based filtering of the Markovian jump neural networks subject to incomplete measurements and deception attacks is investigated by adopting an event-triggered communication strategy, where the attackers are supposed to occur in a random fashion but obey the Bernoulli distribution. Consider that the information of the system mode is transmitted to the filter over the communication network that is vulnerable to external attacks, which may lead to the undesired performance of the resulting system by injecting malicious information from the attackers. As a result, the filter has difficulty completing information from the original system. Besides, an event-triggered communication mechanism is introduced to reduce the communication frequency between data transmission due to the limited network resources, and different triggering conditions corresponding to different jump modes are developed. Then, based on the above considerations, the sufficient condition is derived to ensure the stochastic stability and dissipativity of the resulting augmented system although the deception attacks and incomplete information exist. A numerical simulated example is provided to verify the theoretical analysis.

Abstract:This article studies the secure estimation problem for cyber-physical systems where the control input is falsified by false data injection attack. First, novel optimization objectives are constructed and attack estimation is performed from real and expected measurement outputs, where the estimator gains are jointly derived through solving quadratic problems recursively. Subsequently, the exponential stability of the proposed estimator is derived if the nonlinear observability rank condition is satisfied, and an introduced factor is given properly. Moreover, to enhance estimation performance, the distributed fusion criterion is designed and the weighting matrices are obtained without any statistical information. Finally, an intelligent localization system monitored by multiple sensors is given to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:This article is concerned with the secure particle filtering problem for a class of discrete-time nonlinear cyber-physical systems with binary sensors in the presence of non-Gaussian noises and multiple malicious attacks. The multiple attacks launched by the adversaries, which take place in a random manner, include the denial-of-service attacks, the deception attacks, and the flipping attacks. Three sequences of Bernoulli-distributed random variables with known probability distributions are employed to describe the characteristics of the random occurrence of the multiple attacks. The raw or corrupted measurements are transmitted to sensors, whose outputs are binary according to engineering practice. A modified likelihood function is constructed to compensate for the influence of the randomly occurring multiple attacks by introducing the random occurrence probability information into the design process. Subsequently, a secure particle filter is proposed based on the constructed likelihood function. Finally, a moving target tracking application is elaborated to verify the viability of the proposed secure particle filtering algorithm.

Abstract:The problem of hybrid‐driven fuzzy filtering for nonlinear semi‐linear parabolic partial differential equation systems with dual cyber attacks is investigated. First, a Takagi‐Sugeno (T‐S) fuzzy model is employed to reconstruct the original nonlinear systems. Second, a hybrid‐driven mechanism is applied for filter design to balance the systems' performance and the limited network resource consumption under dual cyber attacks composed of deception and denial of service attacks. Based on the Lyapunov direct method, sufficient conditions to guarantee the stability of the augmented system are obtained, and the parameters of the designed filter are earned with explicit form. Finally, a simulation example with robust analysis and comparative analysis is provided to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:In this article, a secure distributed filtering problem is investigated for a state-saturated system subject to random occurring nonlinearities and deception attack. To resist the hostile attack from a malicious attacker who can modify the data of the transmission module according to a certain probability, an attack detector with a dynamic threshold is designed for each sensor to decide whether to broadcast the current measurement innovation to neighbors. A distributed filtering algorithm is proposed to estimate system state, and a sufficient condition is established to guarantee mean-square boundedness of the estimation error. Moreover, a critical attack probability above which the steady-state estimation error covariance will exceed a preset value is found. In addition, a minimum attack magnitude is given to ensure that the attack signal is able to be completely detected. A numerical example is carried out to testify the validity of the proposed results.

Distributed Optimal and Self-Tuning Filters Based on Compressed Data for Networked Stochastic Uncertain Systems with Deception Attacks

Abstract:In this study, distributed security estimation problems for networked stochastic uncertain systems subject to stochastic deception attacks are investigated. In sensor networks, the measurement data of sensor nodes may be attacked maliciously in the process of data exchange between sensors. When the attack rates and noise variances for the stochastic deception attack signals are known, many measurement data received from neighbour nodes are compressed by a weighted measurement fusion algorithm based on the least-squares method at each sensor node. A distributed optimal filter in the linear minimum variance criterion is presented based on compressed measurement data. It has the same estimation accuracy as and lower computational cost than that based on uncompressed measurement data. When the attack rates and noise variances of the stochastic deception attack signals are unknown, a correlation function method is employed to identify them. Then, a distributed self-tuning filter is obtained by substituting the identified results into the distributed optimal filtering algorithm. The convergence of the presented algorithms is analyzed. A simulation example verifies the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms.

Abstract:In this article, we consider the cooperative tracking problem for a class of nonlinear multiagent systems (MASs) with unknown dynamics under denial-of-service (DoS) attacks. To solve such a problem, a hierarchical cooperative resilient learning method, which involves a distributed resilient observer and a decentralized learning controller, is introduced in this article. Due to the existence of communication layers in the hierarchical control architecture, it may lead to communication delays and DoS attacks. Motivated by this consideration, a resilient model-free adaptive control (MFAC) method is developed to withstand the influence of communication delays and DoS attacks. First, a virtual reference signal is designed for each agent to estimate the time-varying reference signal under DoS attacks. To facilitate the tracking of each agent, the virtual reference signal is discretized. Then, a decentralized MFAC algorithm is designed for each agent such that each agent can track the reference signal by only using the obtained local information. Finally, a simulation example is proposed to verify the effectiveness of the developed method.

Abstract:This article studies the optimized fuzzy prescribed performance control problem for nonlinear nonstrict-feedback systems under denial-of-service (DoS) attacks. A fuzzy estimator is delicately designed to model the immeasurable system states in the presence of DoS attacks. To achieve the preset tracking performance, a simper prescribed performance error transformation is constructed considering the characteristics of DoS attacks, which helps obtain a novel Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation to derive the optimized prescribed performance controller. Furthermore, the fuzzy-logic system, combined with the reinforcement learning (RL) technique, is employed to approximate the unknown nonlinearity existing in the prescribed performance controller design process. An optimized adaptive fuzzy security control law is then proposed for the considered nonlinear nonstrict-feedback systems subject to DoS attacks. Through the Lyapunov stability analysis, the tracking error is proved to approach the predefined region by the preset finite time, even in the presence of DoS attacks. Meanwhile, the consumed control resources are minimized due to the RL-based optimized algorithm. Finally, an actual example with comparisons verifies the effectiveness of the proposed control algorithm.

Abstract:False data injection attacks are widely investigated to exploit the cyber-vulnerability of Cyber-Physical System. However, the existing attack policies only consider the cyber-vulnerability in the one-way communication channel. In this letter, a bidirectional stealthy false data injection attack is proposed to bypass the hostile data detector and degrade the estimation performance in the distributed Kalman filtering system. The stealthiness and the influence of the bidirectional stealthy attack is demonstrated by the theoretical analysis. Furthermore, the alternate transmission protocol is proposed to prevent the bidirectional stealthy attack policy. To remedy the protocol and improve the detection sensitivity, an attack detector with multiple factors is proposed. Besides, the choosing principle of the detection factors is analyzed. Simulation examples are presented to investigate the bidirectional stealthy attack and the developed estimator.

Abstract:This article investigates the distributed state estimation problem for large-scale power systems, where both false data injection (FDI) and denial-of-service (DoS) attacks are considered. The DoS attacks are compensated by using measurement predictor, while the FDI attacks are treated as uncertainties in measurements. Through neighborhood coordination, a posterior residual chi-square test method is applied in each subsystem to detect the FDI attacks in local measurement and edge measurement separately. Finally, by introducing two adaptive factors, an adaptive distributed state estimator (ADSE) is proposed, which can evaluate the credibility of the tampered measurements and mitigate the impact of FDI attacks. Simulation tests conducted on the IEEE 118-bus system verify the effectiveness of the attack detector and the ADSE in power system state estimation.

Abstract:In this article, considering denial-of-service (DoS) attacks and stochastic disturbances, the adaptive decentralized fuzzy security problem of a family of large-scale nonlinear systems is addressed. To mitigate the adverse effects from DoS attack, a compensator is constructed to model the output signals, and a compensator-based estimator that utilizes the designed compensator signals is designed to acquire the unmeasurable state variables. Then, an estimator-based secure control scheme is proposed by employing the adaptive backstepping technique against DoS attacks, where the unknown nonlinearities are approximated through fuzzy logic systems (FLSs) due to their powerful approximation capability. By combining of Lyapunov stability theory and a modified average dwell time (ADT) method that incorporates the constraints imposed on DoS attacks, the stability of the closed-loop system is established. Moreover, the controller guarantees the convergence of tracking errors to a vicinity of the origin even under DoS attacks, and all signals remain semi-globally uniformly ultimately bounded (SGUUB) in probability. Eventually, the validity of the established solution is examined in a simulation example.

Abstract:This paper investigates the problem of event-triggered filtering for delay neural networks (DNNs) under hybrid cyber attacks. First, a novel hybrid cyber attack model is established, which consists of randomly occurring deception attacks and Denial-of-Service attack. Secondly, by considering DNNs, event-triggered mechanism, and hybrid cyber attacks into a unified framework, a novel filtering error model is established by introducing two sets of random variables satisfying Bernoulli distribution and defining a switched filter system. Then, thanks to Lyapunov stability theory and linear matrix inequality (LMI) technology, a sufficient condition to ensure the exponentially mean-square stability is derived for this mathematical model. Among them, a reasonable boundary technique is selected to process the delay-dependent terms in the derivative of Lyapunov–Krasovskii functional. Moreover, a new sufficient condition are derived with LMI forms to co-design both the filter and the event-triggering parameters. Finally, an example verifies the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:This article studies cyberattack detection in discrete-time leader-following nonlinear multiagent systems subject to unknown but bounded system noises. The Takagi–Sugeno fuzzy model is used to approximate the nonlinear systems over the true value of the state. A new method is developed for simultaneous distributed cyberattack detection and leader-following consensus control. The method is based on a fuzzy set-membership filtering consisting of two steps: a prediction and a measurement update. An estimation ellipsoid set is found by updating the prediction ellipsoid set with the current sensor measurement data. Two criteria are provided to detect cyberattacks that inject malicious signals into sensor data, communication channel signals, and control signals based on the intersection between the ellipsoid sets. If there is no intersection between the prediction set and the estimation set of an agent at the current time instant, then a cyberattack on its sensors is declared. Control or communication signals of an agent are under a cyberattack if their prediction sets have no intersection with the estimation sets updated at the previous time instant. Recursive algorithms are proposed for solving the consensus protocol and calculating the two ellipsoid sets. Two cyberattack recovery mechanisms are introduced.

Abstract:In this article, a distributed resilient state estimation scheme is developed for nonlinear systems under sensor attacks. The scheme is implemented over a multiagent network where each agent utilizes the estimates of local observable system states and the information transmitted from its neighbors to construct a distributed median solver so that the median value of local estimates can be approximately recovered. In order to obtain the estimates of local observable states, the nonlinear function is decomposed and an unknown input observer is designed. Then, by using distributed median solver and differential mean value theorem, the secure state estimation is achieved in a fully distributed way, neither a majority of sensing data nor global information is needed, which is different from the existing results. Finally, simulation results are provided to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.
