Abstract:Confinement of the light at the subwavelength scale makes photonic devices more efficient in applications such as optical filtering, switching, and sensing with their low dimensions. Metal-insulator- metal waveguide-based configurations present many paths for manipulating light at the wide range of the electromagnetic spectrum. For that purpose, in this study, a wavelength demultiplexer (WDM) based on a metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguide is numerically investigated by finite difference time domain (FDTD) method. Proposed WDMs have cascade polygon resonators. After optimizing the fundamental filter, this structure is formed as 1×N demultiplexers. The proposed demultiplexers have two- and three channels. The minimum full width at half-maximum (FWHM) value for these channels is 20.02 nm and the maximum quality factor value is 47.7 at 954.9 nm wavelength. The minimum crosstalk value is obtained as -30.37 dB for this study. The proposed 1×N demultiplexers have potential tools to design low-cost integrated optical circuits for specific wavelengths.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to achieve efficient and low - loss wavelength demultiplexing in optical signal transmission. Specifically, the researchers designed a high - performance quantum - cascade multi - channel wavelength demultiplexer (WDM) based on metal - insulator - metal (MIM) waveguides, aiming to improve the performance indicators of the demultiplexer, such as bandwidth (FWHM), quality factor (Q - factor) and crosstalk, by optimizing the structural parameters. In the paper, two - and three - channel demultiplexer designs are proposed and numerically analyzed by the finite - difference time - domain method (FDTD) to verify their optical performance at specific wavelengths. ### Main Objectives: 1. **Design a high - performance 1×N wavelength demultiplexer**: By using MIM waveguides and polygonal resonators, design a demultiplexer that can effectively separate optical signals of different wavelengths. 2. **Optimize structural parameters**: Through parameter scanning, determine the optimal geometric parameters to achieve narrow bandwidth, high Q - factor and low crosstalk. 3. **Verify performance**: Numerically simulate the designed demultiplexer by the FDTD method and evaluate key performance indicators such as its transmission efficiency, bandwidth, Q - factor and crosstalk. ### Key Technical Points: - **MIM waveguide**: Utilize the metal - insulator - metal structure to achieve efficient manipulation of optical signals. - **Polygonal resonator**: By changing the geometry and size of the resonator, achieve selective separation of optical signals of different wavelengths. - **FDTD method**: Adopt the finite - difference time - domain method for numerical simulation to verify the performance of the designed demultiplexer in practical applications. ### Main Results: - **Transmission efficiency**: The highest transmission efficiency reaches 76%. - **Q - factor**: The highest Q - factor value is 47.7. - **Bandwidth (FWHM)**: The smallest FWHM value is 20.02 nm. - **Crosstalk**: The lowest crosstalk value is - 30.37 dB. These results indicate that the designed 1×N wavelength demultiplexer has good performance and is suitable for the design and application of low - cost integrated optical circuits.
