Abstract:White-light non-diffraction beams such as Airy beam and Bessel beam have potential applications in multispectral imaging and micromanipulation. Generation of white-light Airy beam and Bessel beam with high quality and high efficiency still remains challenging for conventional diffractive or refractive optics which suffers from significant chromatic dispersion. In this paper, both high-quality white-light Airy beam and Bessel beam are generated using a deformable mirror by modulating the incident LED beam with tunable cubic and conical wavefronts. The main lobe of the generated white-light non-diffraction beams does not suffer from chromatic dispersion along the propagation. The results also show that the generation of the white-light Bessel beam has higher requirements for spatial coherence than white-light Airy beams. Our work expands the understanding of the white-light non-diffraction beams and paves the way for the applications.

Abstract:The finite-difference time-domain(FDTD)method was used to simulate the propagation of P polarized light Gaussian beam in a single subwavelength metallic(Ag)slit surrounded by gratings.Because of the effect of surface plasmons wave,slit with symmetric grating can realize symmetric diffraction,and special asymmetric structure can achieve off-angle beaming phenomenon.Through formula Derivation and Helmholtz reciprocity theorem,devices for parallel beam of P polarized light could be designed.With the Gaussian beam's divergence and near-field distribution,the structural parameters of devices for Gaussian beam shrinks by 12%.On the basis of optimizating some other structures parameters,the design of symmetric diffracted and off-angle beaming effect device for 633 nm Gaussian beam were achieved.

Abstract:Due to the fantastic properties and diverse applications of specific beams, optical beam shaping has attracted intensive attentions recently. Generally, these beams can be converted from Gaussian beams via particular spatial amplitude or phase control. In this work, we present a liquid crystal photopatterning technique based on dynamic microlithography with a polarisation-sensitive photoalignment agent. This technique enables the accurate, arbitrary and reconfigurable azimuthal angle control of liquid crystals, thus providing a powerful approach for the manipulation of light. By this means, the tailoring of arbitrary fine microstructures with binary or continuously space-variant liquid crystal azimuthal orientations are demonstrated. We briefly review our recent work on some specially designed patterns and corresponding specific optical fields. High-quality vortex beams, vector beams and Airy beams are generated with unprecedented flexibility in the design and control of light wavefront. Besides high efficiency, good electrical switchability and broad wavelength tolerance, the proposed devices also exhibit merits of compact size, low cost, dynamic mode conversion and polarisation controllable energy distribution, and are available for short pulse and intense light modulation. This work may pave a bright way towards beam shaping and bring new possibilities for the design of novel advanced liquid crystal photonic devices.[GRAPHICS].
High Conversion Efficiency Second-Harmonic Beam Shaping Via Amplitude-Type Nonlinear Photonic Crystals

Abstract:An efficient two-dimensional arbitrary harmonic wavefront shaping has been demonstrated in amplitude-type nonlinear photonic crystals, where the phase-matching condition is fulfilled through the birefringence and nonlinear Raman–Nath effects in longitudinal and transverse phase matching, respectively. The binary modulated nonlinear photonic crystal was fabricated by femtosecond laser micromachining based on binary computer-generated holograms. Three second-harmonic Hermite–Gaussian beams, H G 10 , H G 11 , and H G 12 , were achieved by pumping a nanosecond pulsed fundamental Gaussian beam, with the measured normalized conversion efficiency of 8.4 % W − 1 c m − 2 in the first diffraction order of the H G 11 structure. The amplitude-type nonlinear photonic crystal opens wide possibilities in the field of efficient harmonic beam shaping and mode conversion.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a compact, all-solid-state 532 nm semi-Gaussian laser beam (SGB) source based on a 1064 nm laser and a transversely varying periodically-poled LiTaO3 (TPPLT) crystal as the laser beam shaper as well as the nonlinear frequency converter. We have used the designed TPPLT crystal to obtain a neat 532nm SGB with the quality of QSGB=1:17.5 by a single-pass second harmonic generation. The dependence of the generated SGB quality on the designed TPPLT parameter and the potential applications of the neat SGB are also discussed.

Abstract:Laguerre–Gaussian (LG) beams with a spiral phase (optical vortex), which feature orbital angular momenta, and vector beams (VBs) with an axially symmetric spatial polarization distribution exhibit properties different from those of conventional Gaussian beam. In this article, we introduce LG beams and VBs. Next, we explain the generation of LG beams and VBs using liquid-crystal devices. Subsequently, we report the super-resolution observation of biological samples and our observation of a PNLC (Polymer network liquid crystal) network structure using a laser scanning microscope, which comprises a liquid crystal LG-VB generator. Finally, we discuss the conservation of spiral beams and their application to optical wireless communication.

Abstract:The liquid crystal (LC) panel of a commercially-available LCD projector is successfully used for beam shaping, and a Gaussian beam is converted to a square super-Gaussian beam using the configuration of amplitude modulation. The additional phase modulations imposed by the LC modulator on the shaped beams are measured precisely using an interferometric technique. The experimental results have demonstrated that such a commercially-available programmable spatial light modulator is applicable to beam shaping with negligible additional phase modulation.

Abstract:Laser technology has made rapid progress in recent years and has been widely used in various fields such as medicine, biology, military, and materials science. However, the limitations of traditional Gaussian intensity distribution of the laser beams in applications have prompted the emergence and development of flat-top beam shaping technology, which has received widespread attention. Here, we introduce a new method for generating flat-top beams that combines the traditional Gerchberg-Saxton algorithm with convolutional neural networks, using spatial light modulators to achieve flat-top beam shaping. A comparative analysis was conducted by comparing the root mean square error and diffraction efficiency of the generated flat-top beam with the results obtained using only the traditional Gerchberg-Saxton algorithm. Compared with the traditional Gerchberg-Saxton algorithm, the method proposed in this paper can generate a flat-top beam with smaller differences from the target light intensity and higher energy utilization, providing new possibilities for the application of laser technology.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate the controllable laser output of cylindrical vector (CV) beams, which feature flexibility, high efficiency, and good beam quality. Particularly, the CV laser beams have negligible radial components, distinguishing themselves from the extra-cavity-generated CV beams. The output state is controlled by an intra-cavity vortex half-wave plate (VWP). By changing the topological charge (l) of VWP, we produce l = 1 and l = 2 CV beams for example. Through rotating the half-wave plate inside the cavity, the laser outputs arbitrary CV beams around the equator of the corresponding high-order Poincaré spheres. For l = 1 and l = 2 CV beams, the polarization purities are as high as 97.8% and 96.7%, the sloping efficiencies are 15.5% and 5.4%, and the beam quality factors are 2.10 and 3.31, respectively. Our result provides a reliable CV laser source for advanced applications in optical imaging and optical manipulation.

Abstract:Thin film optical elements exhibiting translational invariance, and thus robustness to optical misalignment, are crucial for rapid development of compact and integrated optical devices. In this letter, we experimentally demonstrate a beam-shaping element that generates an annular beam by spatially filtering the fundamental Gaussian mode of a laser beam. The element comprises of a one-dimensional photonic crystal cavity fabricated using sputtered thin films. The planar architecture and in-plane symmetry of the element render our beam-shaping technique translationally invariant. The generated annular beam is sensitive to the polarization direction and the wavelength of the incident laser beam. Using this property of the annular beam, we show simultaneous generation of concentric annular beams of different wavelengths. Our experimental observations show an excellent agreement with simulation results performed using finite-difference time-domain method. Such a beam-shaping element has applications in areas ranging from microscopy and medicine to semiconductor lithography and manufacturing in microelectronics industry.

Abstract:An effective method for orthogonally separating arbitrary vector polarized beams from non-polarized incident light waves is proposed in this Letter. A tunable patterned spatial distribution of liquid-crystal (LC) molecules can be effectively constructed based on both the initial photo-alignment and the electrically controlled birefringence of nematic LC materials. The LC photo-alignment over a smooth surface without any common nano-grooves leads to a highly efficient light-wave transformation by inducing a desired initial arrangement of LC directors and then acquiring extraordinary light waves with the needed, or even arbitrary, spatial polarization. The vector polarized beams can be highly converged according to a microhole-patterned electrode and a gradient refractive index distribution of the LC layer, which is driven and adjusted by an applied signal voltage. Due to the intrinsic polarization sensitivity of nematic LC materials, the formed gradient refractive index appearance only corresponds to extraordinary light waves. The proposed approach provides a way to achieve the orthogonal separation of arbitrary vector beams from non-polarized light waves. Moreover, it can be further utilized to generate and obtain arbitrary vector beams, as well as to perform adaptive light-beam convergence or even the focusing of arbitrary vector beams, which is expected to advance the development of vector beam generation and manipulation, thereby stimulating potential applications.(c) 2022 Optica Publishing Group

Abstract:Orbital Angular Momentum Beams In article number 2200118, Peng Chen, Yan-Qing Lu, and colleagues report a robust method for orbital angular momentum (OAM) beam tailoring in 3D space via preprogrammed liquid crystals. 3D OAM beam lattices with volumetric identical or space-variant OAM modes are generated efficiently in a spin-controllable and electrically-tunable manner. This opens a promising avenue for OAM harnessing with both large capacity and good flexibility.

Abstract:Researches on Airy beams have grown explosively since the first demonstration in 2007 due to the distinguishing properties of nondiffraction, transverse acceleration and self-healing. To date, a simple and compact approach for generating Airy beams in high quality and efficiency has remained challenging. Here, we propose and demonstrate a liquid crystal (LC) polarization Airy mask (PAM) featured by spatially variant LC azimuthal director. The PAM is fabricated through photoaligning LC via a polarization-sensitive alignment agent suophonic azo dye SD1. Thanks to the special design, a novel feature of polarization-controllable switch between dual Airy beams of orthogonal circular polarization is presented. The molecular-level continuity of LC director significantly improves the quality and efficiency of resultant Airy beams. Besides, the PAM can handle intense light due to the absence of absorptive electrodes. Additional merits of compact size, low cost and broad wavelength tolerance are also exhibited. This work settles a fundamental requirement for Airy beam applications of optical manipulations, biology science and even some uncharted territories.

The principle is to act appropriate algebraic functions on the angular spectra of PLG beams. We characterize the propagation properties of these beams and compare them with non-diffraction caustic beams possessing the same intensity profiles. The results manifest that the customized-PLG beams can maintain their profiles during propagation and suffer less energy loss than the non-diffraction caustic beams, and hence are able to propagate a longer distance. This new structure beam would have potential applications in areas such as optical communication, soliton routing and steering, optical tweezing and trapping, atom optics, etc.

Abstract:Wavefront control is the fundamental for various optical elements. Spatial light modulator (SLM), most of which consists of numerous discrete electrically driven micro-size liquid crystal (LC) pixels, could modulate the phase of light dynamically and has attracted intensive attentions. However, the complex electrode matrix makes the SLM costly, optical inefficient, and limiting the quality of output beams. Here, I present an optically addressed LC SLM based on the combination of a rewritable photoalignment agent and a dynamic polarization photo exposing system [1]. This technique enables the accurate, arbitrary and reconfigurable azimuthal angle control of LCs, thus supplies a powerful approach for the manipulation of light. By this means, the tailoring of arbitrary fine microstructures with binary or continuously space-variant liquid crystal azimuthal orientations are demonstrated. Several specially designed patterns and corresponding specific optical fields will be briefly reviewed. High quality vortex beams [2-9], vector beams [10,11] and Airy beams [12,13] which exhibit fantastic properties and have diverse applications are generated with unprecedented flexibility in the design and control of light wavefront. Besides high efficiency, good electrical switchability and broad wavelength tolerance, the proposed devices also exhibit merits of compact size, low cost, dynamic mode conversion, polarization controllable energy distribution and available for short pulse and intense light modulation. Abstract:Continuous, wide field-of-view, high-efficiency, and fast-response beam steering devices are desirable in a plethora of applications. Liquid crystals (LCs)—soft, bi-refringent, and self-assembled materials which respond to various external stimuli—are especially promising for fulfilling these demands. In this paper, we review recent advances in LC beam steering devices. We first describe the general operation principles of LC beam steering techniques. Next, we delve into different kinds of beam steering devices, compare their pros and cons, and propose a new LC-cladding waveguide beam steerer using resistive electrodes and present our simulation results. Finally, two future development challenges are addressed: Fast response time for mid-wave infrared (MWIR) beam steering, and device hybridization for large-angle, high-efficiency, and continuous beam steering. To achieve fast response times for MWIR beam steering using a transmission-type optical phased array, we develop a low-loss polymer-network liquid crystal and characterize its electro-optical properties.

Abstract:High-order Laguerre-Gaussian beams are widely used for the high-precision interferometry, atomic capture and focal volume reduction. The LGp0 beam can produce a small focus and thereby be applied in the super-resolution technology. The phase-only liquid crystal spatial light modulator is able to realize high-efficiency phase modulation of the spatial light with the help of the computer. Based on the angular spectrum method and the Gerchberg-Saxton algorithm, two phase maps for different diffraction distances are designed to shape the Gaussian beam into the Laguerre-Gaussian beam LG10 mode. Through the simulation calculations, the influences of the diffraction distance and the iterations number on the imaging quality evaluated by the mean square error SSE are discussed and verified by experiments. In this paper, the Gaussian beam produced by the He-Ne laser was transformed into LG10 mode with the assistant of the phase-only modulation of spatial light modulator. The experimental results are consistent with the simulation results.
