Abstract:In the digital age, information overload is becoming increasingly prevalent, resulting in consumers facing great challenges in the decision-making process. This study aims to analyze the impact of information overload on consumer anxiety and decision-making difficulties. Netflix and Twitter were selected as case studies to demonstrate successful and failed information management strategies. It was found that Netflix effectively reduced information overload and increased user satisfaction and loyalty through its personalized recommendation system. On the other hand, Twitter deteriorated user experience and increased decision fatigue due to its failure to effectively manage information flow. Based on this, this study proposes that marketers adopt personalized content, trust-building, optimized information filtering mechanisms and continuous improvement strategies to address the challenges of information overload. This study concludes that understanding and managing information overload is critical to digital marketing. Organizations can improve marketing strategies by providing more efficient and user-friendly experiences that enhance user engagement and satisfaction.

Abstract:Individuals within organizations are beginning to make an important realization: more information technology (IT) usage in the workplace can, at times, lead to productivity losses. We conceptualize this frequently observed, but largely ignored phenomenon as technology overload, when additional technology tools begin to crowd out one’s productivity instead of enhancing it. We found support for three main factors contributing technology-based productivity losses through information overload, communication overload, and system feature overload. Interestingly, these factors are a function of the individuals who use the technology, not the technology itself. In this paper, we present the results from three studies that (1) develop and pre-test a scale measurement for technology overload and its distinct dimensions, (2) validate the instrument, and (3) explore the relationship between technology overload and knowledge worker productivity. Our findings demonstrate the relationship between information technology usage and knowledge worker productivity, and they suggest how tradeoffs can be managed to ameliorate technology overload.

Abstract:In the past century, the amount of information that is generated has increased at an exponential rate. As a result of this information saturation process or ‘information overload’, people cannot keep pace with the information flowing towards them. Organizations can take steps towards sustainability by improving the health conditions in their organizations and the products they offer. One way to do so is by trying to reduce information overload. Besides improving health conditions, decreasing information overload also positively affects the quality of organizational-level decision-making. This is a conceptual chapter in which propositions are built. The determinants of information overload and the effect on decision quality are described, and an extensive literature review is conducted. The chapter draws from decision theory and the theory of human information processing and focuses on the individual characteristics of decision-makers and the quality of the information provided by the information system. Seven propositions are formulated and several remedies for information overload are discussed. The chapter arrives at two determinants of an individual’s degree of information overload experienced (characteristics of the decision-maker and the information system), and it is argued that information overload has a negative influence on the quality of decisions. These concepts are combined in one model. The conceptual model is an attempt to provide a better theoretical understanding of the concept of information overload. Finally, contributions, limitations and areas for future research are discussed.

Abstract:In an always connected communication environment, users of social networking services (SNSs) need to pay continuous attention to the overwhelming volume of social demands from SNSs. These increased energy requirements may cause SNS fatigue, which can lead to physical and psychological strain. Using the transactional theory of stress and coping as the overarching theory, this study regards overload (i.e., stressors) as a core determinant of SNS fatigue (i.e., strain) and identifies three dimensions of overload – information overload, communication overload, and system feature overload. It also includes SNS characteristics as the antecedents of overload.The data used in this study were collected from 201 individuals through online and offline surveys. Our results show that all three dimensions of overload were significant stressors that influence SNS fatigue. Regarding the predictors of overload, the characteristics of the SNS system significantly influenced the features of system overload, while information equivocality positively influences information overload. However, information relevance was not a significant predictor of information overload and information equivocality was not a significant predictor of communication overload.

Abstract:Mental health phone applications (apps) provide cost-effective, easily accessible support for college students, yet long-term engagement is often low. Digital overload, defined as information burden from technological devices, may contribute to disengagement from mental health apps. This study aimed to explore the influence of digital overload and phone use preferences on mental health app use among college students, with the goal of informing how notifications could be designed to improve engagement in mental health apps for this population. A semi-structured interview guide was developed to collect quantitative data on phone use and notifications as well as qualitative data on digital overload and preferences for notifications and phone use. Interview transcripts from 12 college students were analyzed using thematic analysis. Participants had high daily phone use and received large quantities of notifications. They employed organization and management strategies to filter information and mitigate the negative effects of digital overload. Digital overload was not cited as a primary barrier to mental health app engagement, but participants ignored notifications for other reasons. Findings suggest that adding notifications to mental health apps may not substantially improve engagement unless additional factors are considered, such as users’ motivation and preferences.

Abstract:Prior literature suggests that it is becoming increasingly pervasive for social media users to experience social media fatigue. Although researchers have explored many possible antecedents of social media fatigue, the additive influences and mechanisms of service provider and user drivers are unclear. Drawing on the conversation of resources theory, the present paper identified information overload and system features overload in using social media, together with users’ privacy invasion and cyberbullying perception as critical antecedents of emotional exhaustion, which was further associated with social media fatigue. Data were collected from 2102 users of the social media, and we employed structural equation modeling (SEM) and Bootstrap to test the proposed theoretical model. The results show that both social-media-related factors (information overload and system features overload) and user-related factors (privacy invasion and cyberbullying) significantly influence emotional exhaustion. Furthermore, these social-media-related and user-related factors indirectly impact social media fatigue through emotional exhaustion. These findings enrich the social media fatigue literature by expanding the antecedence space of social media fatigue and by unveiling the underlying psychological mechanism of the fatigue process. Our research also benefits practitioners by providing implications regarding social media application design, which could play an important role in improving user experiences that facilitate retention.

Abstract:People surfing the Internet are faced with an onslaught of messages from multiple sources, which can overwhelm receivers. In contrast to previous studies, which have used ‘choice overload’ to represent the amount of information provided to consumers, this study used ‘information overload’ theory to represent the abundance of information received by consumers in online shopping environments. Borrowing from the concepts of the communication model, this study investigated the antecedents of perceived information overload, including information characteristics (message), the information source, the system interface (channel) and recipients’ motivation (receiver). A total of 15 adults with more than 3 years of online shopping experience participated in a focus group discussion. By integrating focus group results and the results of previous studies into a theoretical framework, this study developed and empirically tested a structural equation model of online information overload among 456 PChome customers. The results indicated that the complexity and ambiguity of information characteristics, number of brand alternatives offered by the information source and system interface all positively affect consumers’ perceived information overload. Furthermore, information recipients’ motivation not only negatively affected consumers’ perceived information overload but also moderated the relationship between the number of brand alternatives and consumers’ perceived information overload.

Abstract:Mobile social networking sites (SNS) are frequently theorized to lead to perceived information overload, which may affect the well-being of individuals in negative ways. However, the available body of research is mainly based on cross-sectional data. Based on the limited capacity model of motivated mediated message processing (Lang, 2002), we tested the over-time relationships between mobile SNS use, information overload, depressive symptoms, and well-being in a two-wave panel study. Using a quota sample of adults (NT2 = 461), we found that YouTube use increased perceived information overload for all individuals. WhatsApp and Snapchat use did only lead to perceived information overload for older adults. Facebook as well as Instagram use were unrelated to perceived information overload. Furthermore, perceptions of information overload were a significant predictor of depressive symptoms, which in turn, negatively influenced individuals' well-being over time. Implications of these findings are discussed.

Abstract:Mobile information and communication technologies (MICTs) (e.g., enterprise social media, and smart devices) have been adopted to improve employees’ performance. However, the ubiquitous MICTs may result in overload effects that harm individuals’ satisfaction. This paper aims to investigate the overload effects of MICTs use in workplace. A theoretical model that articulates key technology overload factors (information speed load, information amount load, communication overload and interruption overload) and individual coping strategies (social support and job control assistant support) is proposed based on cognitive load theory and coping theory. The model examines their effects on job satisfaction, emphasizing investigation of the mechanism of employees’ cognitive and psychological reactions. The interaction relationships among these overload factors explain the internal expanding mechanisms of individual perceived technology overload level. This study also provides a new perspective to understand the technostress in workplace.

Abstract:The development of technology is considered to improve performance and enable various activities to be carried out quickly, precisely and accurately, so that it will ultimately increase community productivity, including in the process of social interaction in society. One of the products of information technology applications related to the fulfilment of the most developed needs at this time is gadgets. The purpose of this paper is to explain systematically the results of previous research related to this aspect. The aspect is the dynamics of psychological factors of addictive behaviour and how psychology has responded to the topic with interventions that have been carried out. The research material is taken from various scientific publications that discuss the topic. From the findings of several articles, the author found several factors that have a significant correlation to gadget addiction such as; loneliness, self-control, anxiety, boredom and peer influence. The author highlights critical concerns regarding the lack of attention given to the potential impact of gadget addiction. This issue became a topic of research after a global pandemic, where for almost three years worldwide activities including work and education have largely shifted to the virtual or online world. As gadget dependency is inevitable for approximately twelve hours per day, there has been an urgent need for a deeper understanding of the consequences of such dependency.

With the prosperity of the Internet and the World Wide Web (WWW), cutting-edge and emerging technologies are providing us with more and more innovative media to access, display, transform, transmit, and store information across heterogeneous applications, databases, networks, platforms, and systems. This is the reason faculty and scholars have expressed concern about information overload in the age of the information explosion. To help students learn more about information and the information explosion, this chapter explores the definition of information and its primary features in the digital age. Also discussed are some differences and associations among information, data, knowledge, and experience. Finally, this chapter highlights the information explosion and its implications for students in dynamic and interactive academic learning environments.

Abstract:The proliferation of information technologies has changed how Internet users around the world seek information. While information and communication technologies have transformed the structure of the Chinese economy, they have also brought challenges to the informational realms of everyday lives. However, there is a lack of empirical research exploring if users have encountered barriers in seeking online information for daily tasks. This mixed-methods study focuses on the disruptive influence of digital technologies on everyday information seeking practices, namely, the paradoxical co-existence of information overload and the lack of information sources. Results suggest that Chinese Internet users face a dilemma of receiving redundant online information and yet still experience a lack of high-quality information sources online. Findings from this research provide new perspectives of understanding the role of digital technologies in everyday life and also extend the dimensions of digital divides from internet access to disparities in information practices and experiences.

Abstract:This article provides a comprehensive look at society’s use of technology including the Internet, smartphones, and other digital devices and it’s apparent effects on people’s mental health. Negative consequences from technology overuse impact an individual behaviorally, affectively, and cognitively. Advantageous counseling interventions and treatment options are discussed as methods to reduce effects of technology abuse and isolation from the real world and help clients find a balance in connectivity. The authors discuss signs of potential pathological technology use and concern for Internet addiction as well as the DSM-5’s proposed Internet Gaming Disorder. Detrimental impacts on adults, adolescents, and children from continual connectivity are explained. Consequences of attachment to technology include lowered social skills, self-motivation, emotional intelligence, and empathy and increased conflict with others, ADHD, and depression in younger populations. Mental health concerns increase with society’s reduced social interactions resulting from increased technological use and dependence on social media for communication.

Abstract:Abstract In the light of the information age, information overload research in new areas (e.g., social media, virtual collaboration) rises rapidly in many fields of research in business administration with a variety of methods and subjects. This review article analyzes the development of information overload literature in business administration and related interdisciplinary fields and provides a comprehensive and overarching overview using a bibliometric literature analysis combined with a snowball sampling approach. For the last decade, this article reveals research directions and bridges of literature in a wide range of fields of business administration (e.g., accounting, finance, health management, human resources, innovation management, international management, information systems, marketing, manufacturing, or organizational science). This review article identifies the major papers of various research streams to capture the pulse of the information overload-related research and suggest new questions that could be addressed in the future and identifies concrete open gaps for further research. Furthermore, this article presents a new framework for structuring information overload issues which extends our understanding of influence factors and effects of information overload in the decision-making process.

Abstract:The inhibiting effects of information overload on the behavior of online social media users, can affect the population-level characteristics of information dissemination through online conversations. We introduce a mechanistic, agent-based model of information overload and investigate the effects of information overload threshold and rate of information loss on observed online phenomena. We find that conversation volume and participation are lowest under high information overload thresholds and mid-range rates of information loss. Calibrating the model to user responsiveness data on Twitter, we replicate and explain several observed phenomena: 1) Responsiveness is sensitive to information overload threshold at high rates of information loss; 2) Information overload threshold and rate of information loss are Pareto-optimal and users may experience overload at inflows exceeding 30 notifications per hour; 3) Local abundance of small cascades of modest global popularity and local scarcity of larger cascades of high global popularity explains why overloaded users receive, but do not respond to large, highly popular cascades; 4) Users typically work with 7 notifications per hour; 5) Over-exposure to information can suppress the likelihood of response by overloading users, contrary to analogies to biologically-inspired viral spread. Reconceptualizing information spread with the mechanisms of information overload creates a richer representation of online conversation dynamics, enabling a deeper understanding of how (dis)information is transmitted over social media.
