Abstract:We describe an effective procedure to compute the local subgroup zeta functions of the free class-$2$-nilpotent groups on $d$ generators, for all $d$. For $d=4$, this yields a new, explicit formula. For $d\in\{4,5\}$, we compute the topological subgroup zeta function. We also obtain general results about the reduced and topological subalgebra zeta functions. For the former, we determine the behaviour at one and for the latter, the degree and behaviours at zero and infinity. Some of these results confirm, in the relevant special cases, general conjectures by T. Rossmann.

Abstract:Let be a Fitting class and F a formation. We call a subgroup N-h,N-f (G) of a finite group G the h-f-norm of G if N-h,N-f (G) is the intersection of the normalizers of the products of the F-residuals of all subgroups of G and the h-radical of G. Let pi denote a set of primes and let (sic)(pi) denote the class of all finite pi-groups. We call the subgroup N-(sic)pi,N-F (G) of G the pi-F-norm of G. A normal subgroup N of G is called pi-F-hypercentral in G if either N = 1 or N > 1 and every G-chief factor below N of order divisible by at least one prime in pi is F-central in C. Let Z(pi F)(G) denote the pi-F-hypercentre of G, that is, the product of all pi F-hypercentra1 normal subgroups of C. In this paper, we study the properties of the pi F-norm, especially of the pi F-norm of a finite group C. A Classification of Free and Free-Like Nilpotent Groups

Abstract:Suppose $G$ is a $\mathcal{T}$-group (finitely generated torsion-free nilpotent) with centralizers outside of the derived subgroup being abelian of rank equal to $\text{rank}(Z_1)+1$. This includes the class of free nilpotent groups $\mathcal{N}_{r,c}$ of a given rank $r$ and class $c$. It is shown that the upper and lower central series coincide in such groups and from this that they are metabelian. We then prove that all such groups arise as semidirect products of free abelian groups with respect to representation $[G,G]\to \text{UT}(n,\mathbb{Z})$ by automorphisms constructed from integer powers of elements in defining relations we call integral weights of $G$.

Representation zeta functions of nilpotent groups and generating functions for Weyl groups of type B

Abstract:We study representation zeta functions of finitely generated, torsion-free nilpotent groups which are rational points of unipotent group schemes over rings of integers of number fields. Using the Kirillov orbit method and p-adic integration, we prove rationality and functional equations for almost all local factors of the Euler products of these zeta functions. We further give explicit formulae, in terms of Dedekind zeta functions, for the zeta functions of class-2-nilpotent groups obtained from three infinite families of group schemes, generalising the integral Heisenberg group. As an immediate corollary, we obtain precise asymptotics for the representation growth of these groups, and key analytic properties of their zeta functions, such as meromorphic continuation. We express the local factors of these zeta functions in terms of generating functions for finite Weyl groups of type B. This allows us to establish a formula for the joint distribution of three functions, or 'statistics', on such Weyl groups. Finally, we compare our explicit formulae to p-adic integrals associated to relative invariants of three infinite families of prehomogeneous vector spaces.

Abstract:If $G$ is a nilpotent group with a balanced presentation and $G\not\cong\mathbb{Z}^3$ then $\beta_1(G;\mathbb{Q})\leq2$ \cite{Hi22}. We show that if such a group $G$ has an abelian normal subgroup $A$ such that $G/A\cong\mathbb{Z}^2$ then $G$ is torsion-free and has Hirsch length $h(G)\leq4$. On the other hand, if $\beta_1(G;\mathbb{Q})=1$ and $G$ has an abelian normal subgroup $A$ such that $G/A\cong\mathbb{Z}$ then $G\cong\mathbb{Z}/m\mathbb{Z}\rtimes_n\mathbb{Z}$, for some $m,n\not=0$ such that $m$ divides a power of $n-1$.

Abstract:The exceptional group $G_2$ has two maximal parabolic subgroups $P_{long}$, $P_{short}$ corresponding to the so-called long root and short root. In this paper, the second author introduces two zeta functions associated to $(G_2,P_{long})$ and $(G_2,P_{short})$ respectively, and the first author proves that these zetas satisfy the Riemann Hypothesis.

Abstract:Given a class F of finite groups, a subgroup H of a group G is called F-n-normal in G if there exists a normal subgroup T of G such that HT is a normal subgroup of G and (H boolean AND T) H-G/H-G is contained in the F-hypercenter Z(infinity)(F)(G/H-G) of G/H-G. We obtain some results about the F-n-normal subgroups and use them to study the structure of some groups.

Abstract:Let $\Gamma_+$ be a normal subgroup of index $2n$ of a group $\Gamma$ and $\gamma_i \in \Gamma \setminus \Gamma_+$ be involutions. We first prove that if $\Gamma = \Gamma_+ \rtimes (\mathbb{Z}_2(\gamma_1) \times \cdots \times \mathbb{Z}_2(\gamma_n))$ then $\Gamma = (\Gamma_+ \rtimes \mathbb{Z}_2(\gamma_1) \rtimes \cdots \rtimes \mathbb{Z}_2(\gamma_{i-1})) \rtimes (\mathbb{Z}_2(\gamma_{i}) \times \cdots \times \mathbb{Z}_2(\gamma_n))$, where $i=2,\cdots,n$. Second, we use this result to prove the well-known Fubini theorem for a subgroup of index $2n$ of a compact Lie group. Finally, we present an application to invariant theory.

Abstract:Zeta generators are derivations associated with odd Riemann zeta values that act freely on the Lie algebra of the fundamental group of Riemann surfaces with marked points. The genus-zero incarnation of zeta generators are Ihara derivations of certain Lie polynomials in two generators that can be obtained from the Drinfeld associator. We characterize a canonical choice of these polynomials, together with their non-Lie counterparts at even degrees $w\geq 2$, through the action of the dual space of formal and motivic multizeta values. Based on these canonical polynomials, we propose a canonical isomorphism that maps motivic multizeta values into the $f$-alphabet. The canonical Lie polynomials from the genus-zero setup determine canonical zeta generators in genus one that act on the two generators of Enriquez' elliptic associators. Up to a single contribution at fixed degree, the zeta generators in genus one are systematically expanded in terms of Tsunogai's geometric derivations dual to holomorphic Eisenstein series, leading to a wealth of explicit high-order computations. Earlier ambiguities in defining the non-geometric part of genus-one zeta generators are resolved by imposing a new representation-theoretic condition. The tight interplay between zeta generators in genus zero and genus one unravelled in this work connects the construction of single-valued multiple polylogarithms on the sphere with iterated-Eisenstein-integral representations of modular graph forms.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{T}$ denote the class of finitely generated torsion-free nilpotent groups. For a group $G$ let $F(G)$ be the set of isomorphism classes of finite quotients of $G$. Pickel proved that if $G \in \mathcal{T}$, then the set $\mathfrak{g}(G)$ of isomorphism classes of groups $H \in \mathcal{T}$ with $F(G)=F(H)$ is finite. We give an explicit description of the sets $\mathfrak{g}(G)$ for the $\mathcal{T}$-groups $G$ of Hirsch length at most $5$. Based on this, we show that for each Hirsch length $n\geq 4$ and for each $m \in \mathbb{N}$ there is a $\mathcal{T}$-group $G$ of Hirsch length $n$ with $\vert\mathfrak{g}(G)\vert\geq m$.

Abstract:for any s-closed local subformation F of the formation of all phi -dispersive metanilpotent groups,we prove that the nilpotent length of any finite soluble group G is at most 2s + 2 if the order of G is divisible by three distinct primes and the normalizers of all the Sylow subgroups of G belong to 3,where p(s) is the highest power of the phi -smallest prime p dividing \G/G(F)\ (where G(F) is the F-residual of G).

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite solvable group and $H$ a non-normal core-free subgroup of $G$. We show that if the normalizer of any non-trivial normal subgroup of $Fit(H)$ is equal $H$, then $H$ has a nilpotent normal complement $K$ such that $G=KH$ and $KZ(Fit(H))$ is a Frobenius group.

Abstract:We examine the coefficients in front of Chern numbers for complex genera, and pay special attention to the Td12 -genus, the Γ-genus as well as the Todd genus. Some related geometric applications to hyper-Kähler and Calabi-Yau manifolds are discussed. Along this line and building on the work of Doubilet in 1970s, various Hoffman-type formulas for multiple-(star) zeta values and transition matrices among canonical bases of the ring of symmetric functions can be uniformly treated in a more general framework.

Abstract:Johnson showed that the genus 1 bounding pair maps generate the Torelli group of a surface when its genus is at least 3. We show that this generalizes: apart from straightforward exceptions, the bounding pair maps of any fixed genus also generate the Torelli group. We give some applications of this result to normal subgroups of mapping class groups acting on curve complexes.
