Abstract:This paper describes a new simple 1 H PFG NMR method that allows the direct calculation of weakly absorbing gas phase (methane and ethane) intra-crystalline molecular self-diffusion coefficients in microporous β-zeolite samples without the need for gas adsorption isotherm data or the kinetic theory of gases. The method exploits 1 H PFG NMR and T 1 /T 2 relaxation measurements from two distinct regions of a single flame sealed sample: (i) the pure gas phase region well above the zeolite powder bed and (ii) the region occupied by the zeolite crystallite bed. 1 H Relaxation time measurements allow the fractional population of the intercrystallite gas species within the zeolite bed, pinter , to be determined. 1 H PFG NMR experiments are then used to calculate the long-range self-diffusion coefficient Dlong−range and the pure gas phase diffusion coefficient, Dgas . The intracrystalline molecular self-diffusivity Dintra is then calculated using only these three parameters. The results show that Dintra is generally 2–4 times lower than Dlong−range and that the method is independent of zeolite crystallite size.
