Abstract:Fabrication of non-noble metal-based heterogeneous catalysts by a facile and cost-effective strategy for ecofriendly catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH) is of great significance for organic transformations. A cobalt@nitrogen-doped carbon (Co@NC) catalyst was prepared from renewable biomass-derived sucrose, harmless melamine, and earth-abundant Co(AcO)2 as the precursor materials by hydrothermal treatment and carbonization. Co nanoparticles (NPs) were coated with NC shells and uniformly embedded in the NC framework. The as-obtained Co@NC-600 (carbonized at 600 °C) catalyst exhibited excellent catalytic efficiency for CTH of various functionalized nitroarenes with formic acid (FA) as hydrogen donor in aqueous solution. The uniformly incorporated N atoms in the C matrix and the encapsulated Co NPs showed synergistic effects in the CTH reactions. A mechanistic analysis indicated that the protons from FA were activated by Co sites after being captured by N atoms, and then reacted with nitroarenes adsorbed on the surface of the catalysts to generate the corresponding aromatic amines. Moreover, the catalyst showed excellent durability and reusability without obvious decrease in activity even after five reaction cycles. Thus, the study reported herein provides a cost-effective, sustainable strategy for fabrication of biomass-derived non-noble metal-based catalysts for green and efficient catalytic transformations.

Abstract:Nitrogen (N)-doped carbon materials have become promising candidates for many applications. In this paper, the biomass activated carbon (BC) was obtained by carbonization and activation of soybean meal. Using soybean meal as the precursor, potassium hydroxide (KOH) as the activator and melamine as the nitrogen source, a series of N-doped porous biomass carbons (H-NC-X) with different N contents were achieved via a facile post-treatment nitrogen doping strategy. Then these samples were used as a catalyst for dry reforming of methane (DRM) reaction and an adsorbent for CO2 capture. Among all the investigated samples, BC has the largest specific surface area and the best pore structure characteristics, showing the best CO2 adsorption capacity. However, when BC was used as a catalyst for DRM reaction, it showed the worst catalytic performance. After nitrogen doping treatment, the CO2 adsorption capacity of the prepared N-doped biomass porous carbon decreased gradually with the increase of the introduced N content. This is mainly due to the destruction of the microporous structure of porous carbon by post-processing nitrogen doping. In contrast, when nitrogen-doped porous carbon was used as the reforming catalyst, the catalytic activity increased with the increase of the introduced N content. The order was: H-NC-30>H-NC-20>H-NC-10. This indicates that when nitrogen-doped porous carbon was used as an adsorbent, the pore structure plays a major role; while when it was used as a reforming catalyst, nitrogen functional groups are the major active sites. This study provides a promising N-doped carbon material for effect CO2 adsorption and DRM reactions.

Abstract:Encompassing ecological and economic concerns, the utilization of biomass to produce carbonaceous materials has attracted intensive research and industrial interest. Using nitrogen containing precursors could realize an in situ and homogeneous incorporation of nitrogen into the carbonaceous materials with a controlled process. Herein, N-doped hollow core-disordered mesoporous shell carbonaceous nanospheres (HCDMSs) were synthesized from glucosamine hydrochloride (GAH), an applicable carbohydrate-based derivative. The obtained HCDMSs possessed controlled size (∼450-50 nm) and shell thickness (∼70-10 nm), suitable nitrogen contents (∼6.7-4.4 wt.%), and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface areas up to 770 m2·g−1. These materials show excellent electrocatalytic activity as a metal-free catalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in both alkaline and acidic media. Specifically, the prepared HCDMS-1 exhibits a high diffusion-limited current, and superior durability and better immunity towards methanol crossover and CO poisoning for ORR in alkaline solution than a commercial 20 wt.% Pt/C catalyst.

Abstract:N-Doped carbon nanotube-encapsulated metal nanoparticles are of great interest in heterogeneous catalysis owing to their improved mass transfer ability and superior stability. Herein, a facile one-pot pyrolysis approach using melamine as the carbon and nitrogen source was developed to fabricate metal nanoparticles embedded in bamboo-like N-doped carbon nanotubes (named as Co@NCNTs-600-800 and Ni@NCNTs-600-800). The optimized Co@NCNTs-600-800 catalyst exhibited outstanding activity in furfural (FAL) selective hydrogenation to furfuryl alcohol (FOL) or cyclopentanone (CPO) in aqueous media. High yields of FOL (100%) and CPO (75.3%) were achieved at 80 degrees C and 140 degrees C, respectively. Besides, this cobalt catalyst showed very good stability and recyclability during the reaction. The synergistic effect between metallic cobalt and N-doped carbon nanotubes was systematically investigated. In addition, the as-prepared Ni@NCNTs-600-800 catalyst also exhibited remarkable activity. Under optimal conditions (100 degrees C and 4 MPa H-2 pressure), a maximum tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol (THFOL) yield (99.5%) was obtained in the aqueous-phase hydrogenation of FAL. The research thus highlights new perspectives for non-noble metal-based N-doped carbon nanotube catalysts for biomass transformation.

Abstract:<p>Low-cost biomass-derived carbon nanomaterials hold great promise as catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction. Here, we have successfully prepared an N, S co-doped metal-free porous carbon catalyst through the synchronous pore-forming/doping technology. The thiourea plays dual roles as a porogen and dopant in the synthesis process. After coupling with thiourea, the successful doping of N and S elements in NSMP-I increase their defects, specific surface area, and pyridine nitrogen groups. These advantages result in a significant increase in the property of the catalyst. The ORR test result of NSMP-I shows that the four-electron transfer pathway is followed, and the onset potential and the half-wave potential are increased to 0.92 and 0.78 V vs. RHE, respectively. The result achieved may help contribute to provide a way and theoretical guidance for the sustainability and efficiency of agricultural and forestry waste resources.</p>

Abstract:Heteroatom-doped carbon materials for eco-friendly metal-free catalysis have gained increasing attention, but they nevertheless face technological challenges relating to the difficult recycling and high cost. In this work, P-doped granular activated carbons with intrinsic N functionality (PN-GAC-T) were successfully fabricated from low-cost and sustainable waste peanut shells using a simple self-bonding strategy assisted by phosphoric acid. The as-prepared PN-GAC-T were found to have abundant N, P functional groups and large specific surface areas, making them potentially efficient metal-free catalysts for the selective oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF). Catalytic results showed that an excellent HMF conversion (98.4%) and 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF) selectivity (99.7%) could be achieved under mild conditions via employing PN-GAC-800 as a catalyst. The good catalytic performance of PN-GAC-800 is highly reliant on the synergistic effect between doped P and intrinsic N functionalities as verified by the control experiments. Furthermore, the density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrated that the introduction of both P and N functional groups would aid in the activation of HMF and the improvement of oxygen adsorption capability. This work has emphasized the possibility of high-value exploitation of biomass waste, and it is predicted to provide new inspiration for the development of readily recyclable heteroatom-doped carbon catalysts.

Abstract:The development of N-doped catalysts from biomass remains an important objective of chemical research. In this study, a simple fabrication process for renewable N-doped carbon (RNC, N content 6.5wt%) is provided to take the inexpensive of soybean pulp for efficient chemoselective hydrogenation of halogenated nitrobenzenes. The RNC precursor was activated by KOH and carbonized at high temperatures; this resulted in dramatically increased specific surface area and accessible active sites. Natural N atoms in the carbon matrix provide out-of-domain charge and modulate the electronic property of RNC as a metal-like structure. The obtained RNC material shows excellent catalytic activity in the catalytic hydrogenation of halogenated nitrobenzenes using N2H4H2O as the reducing agent under mild reaction conditions. The catalytic activity of RNC only slightly decrease after repeated reaction cycles.

Abstract:In order to enhance the corrosion resistance of carbon supported electrocatalyst under harsh operating conditions for Zn-air battery, a new type of 3D porous graphitic carbon catalysts are developed through catalytic graphitization of biomass waste combing with metal and nitrogen introduction. The obtained catalyst exhibits outstanding ORR (oxygen reduction reaction) performance by exhibiting same half-wave potential than that of commercial 20 wt% Pt/C in alkaline condition and higher current density, better stability, and better methanol tolerance. When assembled for rechargeable Zn-air batteries, the samples show a power density as high as 154 mW cm−2 with an excellent cycling stability greater than 90 h/270 cycles. A series of control experiments provide a new insight into the coupling role of porosity and the degree of graphitization in ORR catalytic process, that is, the balance of graphitization and porosity contributes to both high activity and good stability.

Abstract:Hydrogenation of CO 2 to produce formic acid/formate is a significant pathway for future energy storage and utilization. The development of heterogeneous catalysts with high activity and stability for this process is still a challenge. In this work, the in-situ N-doped hierarchical porous carbon derived from distiller's grains was used as a support for Pd-based catalysts (Pd/NC) to convert CO 2 into valuable chemicals while making high-value use of waste biomass. The optimum catalyst, Pd/NC-800, shown exceptional catalytic performance, achieving a turnover frequency (TOF) of 2060 h −1 at 100°C, 4 MPa in the catalytic CO 2 hydrogenation to formate reaction. Comprehensive experimental results and density functional theory calculations indicate that the electronic effect between the pyridine N in the support and the Pd nanoparticles (NPs) can make the Pd surface reach the state of electron enrichment and enhance the metal-support interaction. Moreover, the synthesized material has hierarchical pore structure, which provides abundant Pd anchor location sites and improves mass transfer efficiency. The results not only provide a feasible strategy for the preparation of efficient CO 2 hydrogenation catalysts, but also break a new and effective avenue for the resource utilization of distiller's grains.

Facile Synthesis of N-Doped Graphene-Like Carbon Nanoflakes as Efficient and Stable Electrocatalysts for the Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Abstract:A series of N-doped carbon materials (NCs) were synthesized by using biomass citric acid and dicyandiamide as renewable raw materials via a facile one-step pyrolysis method. The characterization of microstructural features shows that the NCs samples are composed of few-layered graphene-like nanoflakes with controlled in situ N doping, which is attributed to the confined pyrolysis of citric acid within the interlayers of the dicyandiamide-derived g-C3N4 with high nitrogen contents. Evidently, the pore volumes of the NCs increased with the increasing content of dicyandiamide in the precursor. Among these samples, the NCs nanoflakes prepared with the citric acid/dicyandiamide mass ratio of 1:6, NC-6, show the highest N content of ~6.2 at%, in which pyridinic and graphitic N groups are predominant. Compared to the commercial Pt/C catalyst, the as-prepared NC-6 exhibits a small negative shift of ~66 mV at the half-wave potential, demonstrating excellent electrocatalytic activity in the oxygen reduction reaction. Moreover, NC-6 also shows better long-term stability and resistance to methanol crossover compared to Pt/C. The efficient and stable performance are attributed to the graphene-like microstructure and high content of pyridinic and graphitic doped nitrogen in the sample, which creates more active sites as well as facilitating charge transfer due to the close four-electron reaction pathway. The superior electrocatalytic activity coupled with the facile synthetic method presents a new pathway to cost-effective electrocatalysts for practical fuel cells or metal-air batteries.

Abstract:Biomass is the most abundant renewable resource on earth and developing high-performance nonprecious selective hydrogenation (SH) catalysts will enable the use of biomass to replace rapidly diminishing fossil resources. This work utilizes ZIF-67-derived nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes to confine Co nanoparticles (NPs) with Co-Nx active sites as a high-performance SH catalyst. The confined Co NPs with Co-Nx exhibit excellent catalytic activity, selectivity, and stability toward a wide range of biomass-derived compounds. Such active sites can selectively hydrogenate aldehyde, ketone, carboxyl, and nitro groups of biomass-derived compounds into value-added fine chemicals with 100% selectivity. The reported approach could be adopted to create other forms of catalytically active sites from other nonprecious metals.

Abstract:Biomass–derived carbon materials doped with diverse heteroatoms have demonstrated huge potentials for environment and energy applications, thanks to the availability, preferable porous and channel structures, and excellent conductivity and stability. In this work, fiberboard waste containing resin–based adhesive was selected for the green fabrication of N–doped carbon catalysts without using extra N–sources. A facile two–step calcination strategy with sequential carbonization and activation was proposed for generation and exposure of indispensable active sites, realizing the controllable regulation of textural and morphological characteristics. The resulting N–doped fiberboard derived carbon (NFC) samples possessed unique hierarchically porous structures with a significantly enlarged surface area, plentiful activity–dependent N species (e.g., graphitic N and pyridinic N), as well as suitable graphitization degree and surface hydrophilicity. As a result, a favorable adsorption procedure and an enhanced accessibility of active sites synergistically boosted the catalytic performance towards hydrogenation reduction of nitroaromatics. Taking the NFC–hh sample as paradigm, an excellent performance was demonstrated for 4–nitrophenol (4–NP) reduction, achieving a high apparent rate constant of 0.40 min −1 and an impressive turnover frequency of ∼0.20 mmol g −1 min −1 . Besides, the continuous–flowing catalytic test exhibited an excellent conversion efficiency > 99.50% with a long–term stability over 100 h, showing an attractive prospect for industrial application. This work presents a new approach for high value–added utilization of biomass waste, and provides a low–cost and high–active catalyst for environmental remediation.

Abstract:The creation of non-noble metal magnetically-separable heterogeneous catalysts for the hydrodeoxygenation of biomass to value-added products has received substantial attention. Herein, we report a facile synthesis of magnetically-separable cobalt catalyst embedded in hierarchically porous N-doped carbon nanospheres (Co@NC) by in situ non-noble metal nitrate-promoted pyrolysis reduction strategy using nitrogen/oxygen co-doped resin polymer spheres as precursors. The facile H2O2 post-treatment process increased surface oxygen-containing groups and improved hydrophilicity to disperse catalysts in aqueous solutions. Moreover, owing to the non-noble metal nanoparticles coated with a graphitic nitrogen-doped carbon layer, the as-prepared Co@NCH2O2 catalyst exhibits excellent catalytic activity and stability of vanillin hydrodeoxygenation in aqueous solutions. This strategy can be extended to other non-noble metal nitrates like M@NCH2O2 (M = Co, Ni) within good recyclability, magnetically-separable ability, and general applicability for a broad substrate scope, further highlighting the superiority of our active catalysts.

Abstract:Introducing dual Lewis acidic and basic sites into carbon is a promising way to improve the catalytic efficiency of carbon-based catalysts for CO 2 fixation into epoxides to produce cyclic carbonates. Here, a simple and one-step method is proposed to couple atomically dispersed Zn–N 4 sites and abundant –OH/–COOH groups as hydrogen bond donor (HBD) sites in porous nitrogen-doped carbon via pyrolysis of a mixture of tea saponin, melamine and Zn(NO 3 ) 2 . These HBD sites, together with atomically dispersed Zn sites, serve as Lewis acids to activate epoxides, while N-doping provides a Lewis base, favouring CO 2 activation. As a result, the resulting carbon (ZNC-800) displayed high yields of >99% at 12 h for CO 2 cycloaddition with different epoxides, such as epichlorohydrin, epibromohydrin, benzyl( R )-(−)-glycidyl ether, 1,2-epoxyhexane and glycidyl phenyl ether, at 80 °C and 0.1 MPa CO 2 . In addition, owing to its good photothermal ability, ZNC-800 can also drive CO 2 cycloaddition reactions with high catalytic efficiency under light irradiation, which makes ZNC-800 a promising biomass-derived catalyst for both thermally and photothermally driven CO 2 conversion.

Abstract:Graphene-like nitrogen-doped carbon nanosheets (NCN) have become a fascinating carbon-based material for advanced energy storage and conversion devices, but its easy, cheap, and environmentally friendly synthesis is still a grand challenge. Herein we directly synthesized porous NCN material via the facile pyrolysis of chitosan and urea without the requirement of any catalyst or post-treatment. As-prepared material exhibits a very large BET surface area of ~1510 m(2) g(-1) and a high ratio of graphitic/pyridinic nitrogen structure (2.69 at. % graphitic N and 1.20 at. % pyridinic N). Moreover, compared to a commercial Pt/C catalyst, NCN displays excellent electrocatalytic activity, better long-term stability, and methanol tolerance ability toward the oxygen reduction reaction, indicating a promising metal-free alternative to Pt-based cathode catalysts in alkaline fuel cells. This scalable fabrication method supplies a low-cost, high-efficiency metal-free oxygen reduction electrocatalyst and also suggests an economic and sustainable route from biomass-based molecules to value-added nanocarbon materials.

Abstract:Unsaturated furanic aldehydes are derived from lignocellulosic biomass resources and subsequently used to produce valuable chemicals. However, the highly efficient, selective hydrogenation of the biomass-derived unsaturated furan C O bond remains challenging. Here we report that graphene-like nitrogen doped porous carbon (GNPC) nanosheets are synthesized from carbon-rich, sustainable, and renewable biomass precursors (glucose, fructose and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural, HMF) with high surface areas, large pore volumes and narrow mesopores. GNPC derived from HMF is an excellent catalyst support for PtCo nanoparticles with ultrafine nanoparticles size and homogeneous distributions. This catalyst is highly efficient for hydrogenation of biomass-derived furan-based unsaturated aldehydes , with high yields, to the corresponding unsaturated alcohols under mild conditions. This design strategy should further allow the development of selective, simple, green heterogeneous catalysts for challenging chemical transformations.

Abstract:A metal-free oxidative dehydrogenation of N-heterocycles utilizing a nitrogen/phosphorus co-doped porous carbon (NPCH) catalyst is reported. The optimal material is robust against traditional poisoning agents and shows high antioxidant resistance. It exhibits good catalytic performance for the synthesis of various quinoline, indole, isoquinoline, and quinoxaline 'on-water' under air atmosphere. The active sites in the NPCH catalyst are proposed to be phosphorus and nitrogen centers within the porous carbon network.
