Abstract:A novel graphene oxide (GO) mediated dispersive micro solid phase extraction procedure is developed for the extraction of ultratrace level beryllium from effluents of beryllium processing plants. These effluents are in alkaline condition due to extraction of Be as Be(OH)2 using NaOH. The method is based on quantitative sorption of Be present in the alkaline effluents onto GO. The Be sorbed GO is extracted into 1-octanol and Be is back extracted into dilute HNO3 and determined using GFAAS. In alkaline solutions, GO surface is negatively charged and forms highly stable dispersions due electrostatic repulsions between GO sheets, which improves the sorption capacity towards metal ions but the separation of GO is very difficult. Therefore, after sorption of Be, NaCl is added to the GO dispersion to achieve cation induced surface charge neutralization of GO. Due to charge neutralization, π-π interactions between GO sheets dominates over electrostatic repulsive forces, which results in coagulation of GO. These bulky and hydrophobic GO coagulates are easily extracted into 1-octanol. At optimized conditions, the pre-concentration factor and limit of detection are 100 and 0.002 ng mL-1, respectively for 50 mL sample. The recoveries are in the range of 90 to 112% at 50-200 pg mL-1.
