Abstract:Certain quantization problems are equivalent to the construction of morphisms from "quantum" to "classical" props. Once such a morphism is constructed, Hensel's lemma shows that it is in fact an isomorphism. This gives a new, simple proof that any Etingof-Kazhdan quantization functor is an equivalence of categories between quantized universal enveloping (QUE) algebras and Lie bialgebras over a formal series ring (dequantization). We apply the same argument to construct dequantizations of formal solutions of the quantum Yang-Baxter equation and of quasitriangular QUE algebras. We also give structure results for the props involved in quantization of Lie bialgebras, which yield an associator-independent proof that the prop of QUE algebras is a flat deformation of the prop of co-Poisson universal enveloping algebras.

Abstract:In quantum computing, the computation is achieved by linear operators in or between Hilbert spaces. In this work, we explore a new computation scheme, in which the linear operators in quantum computing are replaced by (higher) functors between two (higher) categories. If from Turing computing to quantum computing is the first quantization of computation, then this new scheme can be viewed as the second quantization of computation. The fundamental problem in realizing this idea is how to realize a (higher) functor physically. We provide a theoretical idea of realizing (higher) functors physically based on the physics of topological orders.

On the fluid-fluid phase separation in charged-stabilized colloidal suspensions

Abstract:We develop a thermodynamic description of particles held at a fixed surface potential. This system is of particular interest in view of the continuing controversy over the possibility of a fluid-fluid phase separation in aqueous colloidal suspensions with monovalent counterions. The condition of fixed surface potential allows in a natural way to account for the colloidal charge renormalization. In a first approach, we assess the importance of the so called ``volume terms'', and find that in the absence of salt, charge renormalization is sufficient to stabilize suspension against a fluid-fluid phase separation. Presence of salt, on the other hand, is found to lead to an instability. A very strong dependence on the approximations used, however, puts the reality of this phase transition in a serious doubt. To further understand the nature of the instability we next study a Jellium-like approximation, which does not lead to a phase separation and produces a relatively accurate analytical equation of state for a deionized suspensions of highly charged colloidal spheres. A critical analysis of various theories of strongly asymmetric electrolytes is presented to asses their reliability as compared to the Monte Carlo simulations.

Abstract:This paper unites two research lines. The first involves finding categorical models of quantum programming languages and their type systems. The second line concerns the program of quantization of mathematical structures, which amounts to finding noncommutative generalizations (also called quantum generalizations) of these structures. Using a quantization method called discrete quantization, which essentially amounts to the internalization of structures in a category of von Neumann algebras and quantum relations, we find a noncommutative generalization of $\omega$-complete partial orders (cpos), called quantum cpos. Cpos are central in domain theory, and are widely used to construct categorical models of programming languages. We show that quantum cpos have similar categorical properties to cpos and are therefore suitable for the construction of categorical models for quantum programming languages, which is illustrated with some examples. For this reason, quantum cpos may form the backbone of a future quantum domain theory.

Abstract:De Finetti theorems tell us that if we expect the likelihood of outcomes to be independent of their order, then these sequences of outcomes could be equivalently generated by drawing an experiment at random from a distribution, and repeating it over and over. In particular, the quantum de Finetti theorem says that exchangeable sequences of quantum states are always represented by distributions over a single state produced over and over. The main result of this paper is that this quantum de Finetti construction has a universal property as a categorical limit. This allows us to pass canonically between categorical treatments of finite dimensional quantum theory and the infinite dimensional. The treatment here is through understanding properties of (co)limits with respect to the contravariant functor which takes a C*-algebra describing a physical system to its convex, compact space of states, and through discussion of the Radon probability monad. We also show that the same categorical analysis also justifies a continuous de Finetti theorem for classical probability.

Quantum category O vs affine Hecke category

Abstract:The goal of this paper is to relate the quantum category $\mathcal{O}$ (known also as the category of modules over the mixed quantum group) at an odd root of unity to the affine Hecke category. Namely, we prove equivalences of highest weight categories between integral blocks of the affine category $\mathcal{O}$ and the heart of the so called ``new'' t-structure on the affine Hecke category. In order to do this we deform our categories over the formal neighborhood of $0$ in the dual affine Cartan and show that the categories of standardly filtered objects in the deformations are equivalent. For this, we construct functors from the deformed categories to the category of bimodules over the formal power series on the affine Cartan. Then we use what we call the Rouquier-Soergel theory, also developed in this paper, to show that on the categories of standardly filtered objects, these functors are full embeddings with the same image.

Categorical quantization on Kähler manifolds

Abstract:Generalizing deformation quantizations with separation of variables of a Kähler manifold $M$, we adopt Fedosov's gluing argument to construct a category $\mathsf{DQ}$, enriched over sheaves of $\mathbb{C}[[\hbar]]$-modules on $M$, as a quantization of the category of Hermitian holomorphic vector bundles over $M$ with morphisms being smooth sections of hom-bundles. We then define quantizable morphisms among objects in $\mathsf{DQ}$, generalizing Chan-Leung-Li's notion [4] of quantizable functions. Upon evaluation of quantizable morphisms at $\hbar = \tfrac{\sqrt{-1}}{k}$, we obtain an enriched category $\mathsf{DQ}_{\operatorname{qu}, k}$. We show that, when $M$ is prequantizable, $\mathsf{DQ}_{\operatorname{qu}, k}$ is equivalent to the category $\mathsf{GQ}$ of holomorphic vector bundles over $M$ with morphisms being holomorphic differential operators, via a functor obtained from Bargmann-Fock actions.

We prove it enjoys all limits and colimits, that it has a classifier for regular subobjects (a sort of truth-values object), which we characterize and give explicitly. Moreover: we prove it to be -locally presentable, (where ); we also describe a hierarchy of monoidal structures in this category.

Abstract:Using Araki–Yamagami's characterization of quasi-equivalence for quasi-free representations of the CCRs, we provide an abstract criterion for the existence of isomorphisms of second quantization local von Neumann algebras induced by Bogolubov transformations in terms of the respective one particle modular operators. We discuss possible applications to the problem of local normality of vacua of Klein-Gordon fields with different masses.

Abstract:We introduce a diagrammatic monoidal category $\mathcal{H}eis_k(z,t)$ which we call the quantum Heisenberg category, here, $k \in \mathbb{Z}$ is "central charge" and $z$ and $t$ are invertible parameters. Special cases were known before: for central charge $k=-1$ and parameters $z = q-q^{-1}$ and $t = -z^{-1}$ our quantum Heisenberg category may be obtained from the deformed version of Khovanov's Heisenberg category introduced by Licata and the second author by inverting its polynomial generator, while $\mathcal{H}eis_0(z,t)$ is the affinization of the HOMFLY-PT skein category. We also prove a basis theorem for the morphism spaces in $\mathcal{H}eis_k(z,t)$.

Symmetries of quantization of finite groupoids

Abstract:This paper proves certain facts concerning the equivariance of quantization of pi-finite spaces. We argue that these facts establish an analogy between this quantization procedure and the geometric quantization of a symplectic vector space. Specifically, we observe that symmetries of a given polarization/Lagrangian always induce coherent symmetries of the quantization. On the other hand, symmetries of the entire phase space a priori only induce projective symmetries. For certain three-dimensional theories, this projectivity appears via a twice-categorified analogue of Blattner-Kostant-Sternberg kernels in geometric quantization and the associated integral transforms.

Abstract:Geometric quantization is a natural way to construct quantum models starting from classical data. In this work, we start from a symplectic vector space with an inner product and — using techniques of geometric quantization — construct the quantum algebra and equip it with a distinguished state. We compare our result with the construction due to Sorkin — which starts from the same input data — and show that our distinguished state coincides with the Sorkin-Johnson state. Sorkin's construction was originally applied to the free scalar field over a causal set (locally finite, partially ordered set). Our perspective suggests a natural generalization to less linear examples, such as an interacting field.

Abstract:We construct a covariant functor from a category of Abelian principal bundles over globally hyperbolic spacetimes to a category of *-algebras that describes quantized principal connections. We work within an appropriate differential geometric setting by using the bundle of connections and we study the full gauge group, namely the group of vertical principal bundle automorphisms. Properties of our functor are investigated in detail and, similar to earlier works, it is found that due to topological obstructions the locality property of locally covariant quantum field theory is violated. Furthermore, we prove that, for Abelian structure groups containing a nontrivial compact factor, the gauge invariant Borchers-Uhlmann algebra of the vector dual of the bundle of connections is not separating on gauge equivalence classes of principal connections. We introduce a topological generalization of the concept of locally covariant quantum fields. As examples, we construct for the category of principal U(1)-bundles two natural transformations from singular homology functors to the quantum field theory functor that can be interpreted as the Chern class and the electric charge. In this case we also prove that the electric charges can be consistently set to zero, which yields another quantum field theory functor that satisfies all axioms of locally covariant quantum field theory.

Abstract:Applying the Fedosov connections constructed in our previous work, we find a (dense) subsheaf of smooth functions on a Kähler manifold $X$ which admits a non-formal deformation quantization. When $X$ is prequantizable and the Fedosov connection satisfies an integrality condition, we prove that this subsheaf of functions can be quantized to a sheaf of twisted differential operators (TDO), which is isomorphic to that associated to the prequantum line bundle. We also show that examples of such quantizable functions are given by images of quantum moment maps.

Abstract:An extension of Cencov's categorical description of classical inference theory to the domain of quantum systems is presented. It provides a novel categorical foundation to the theory of quantum information that embraces both classical and quantum information theory in a natural way, while also allowing to formalise the notion of quantum environment. A first application of these ideas is provided by extending the notion of statistical manifold to incorporate categories, and investigating a possible, uniparametric Cramer-Rao inequality in this setting.

Deformation Quantization via Categorical Factorization Homology

Abstract:This paper develops an approach to categorical deformation quantization via factorization homology. We show that a quantization of the local coefficients for factorization homology is equivalent to consistent quantizations of its value on manifolds. To formulate our results we introduce the concepts of shifted almost Poisson and BD categories. Our main example is the character stack of flat principal bundles for a reductive algebraic group $G$, where we show that applying the general framework to the Drinfeld category reproduces deformations previously introduced by Li-Bland and Ševera. As a direct consequence, we can conclude a precise relation between their quantization and those introduced by Alekseev, Grosse, and Schomerus. To arrive at our results we compute factorization homology with values in a ribbon category enriched over complete $\mathbb{C}[[\hbar]]$-modules. More generally, we define enriched skein categories which compute factorization homology for ribbon categories enriched over a general closed symmetric monoidal category $\mathcal{V}$.

Involutive Markov categories and the quantum de Finetti theorem

Abstract:Markov categories have recently emerged as a powerful high-level framework for probability theory and theoretical statistics. Here we study a quantum version of this concept, called involutive Markov categories. First, we show that these are equivalent to Parzygnat's quantum Markov categories but argue that they are simpler to work with. Our main examples of involutive Markov categories involve C*-algebras (of any dimension) as objects and completely positive unital maps as morphisms in the picture of interest. Second, we prove a quantum de Finetti theorem for both the minimal and the maximal C*-tensor norms, and we develop a categorical description of such quantum de Finetti theorems which amounts to a universal property of state spaces.

Abstract:Formalizations of quantum information theory in category theory and type theory, for the design of verifiable quantum programming languages, need to express its two fundamental characteristics: (1) parameterized linearity and (2) metricity. The first is naturally addressed by dependent-linearly typed languages such as Proto-Quipper or, following our recent observations: Linear Homotopy Type Theory (LHoTT). The second point has received much attention (only) in the form of semantics in "dagger-categories", where operator adjoints are axiomatized but their specification to Hermitian adjoints still needs to be imposed by hand. We describe a natural emergence of Hermiticity which is rooted in principles of equivariant homotopy theory, lends itself to homotopically-typed languages and naturally connects to topological quantum states classified by twisted equivariant KR-theory. Namely, we observe that when the complex numbers are considered as a monoid internal to Z/2-equivariant real linear types, via complex conjugation, then (finite-dimensional) Hilbert spaces do become self-dual objects among internally-complex Real modules. The point is that this construction of Hermitian forms requires of the ambient linear type theory nothing further than a negative unit term of tensor unit type. We observe that just such a term is constructible in LHoTT, where it interprets as an element of the infinity-group of units of the sphere spectrum, tying the foundations of quantum theory to homotopy theory. We close by indicating how this allows for encoding (and verifying) the unitarity of quantum gates and of quantum channels in quantum languages embedded into LHoTT.
