Abstract:We conducted an all-sky imaging transient search with the Owens Valley Radio Observatory Long Wavelength Array (OVRO-LWA) data collected during the Perseid meteor shower in 2018. The data collection during the meteor shower was motivated to conduct a search for intrinsic radio emission from meteors below 60 MHz known as the meteor radio afterglows (MRAs). The data collected were calibrated and imaged using the core array to obtain lower angular resolution images of the sky. These images were input to a pre-existing LWA transient search pipeline to search for MRAs as well as cosmic radio transients. This search detected 5 MRAs and did not find any cosmic transients. We further conducted peeling of bright sources, near-field correction, visibility differencing and higher angular resolution imaging using the full array for these 5 MRAs. These higher angular resolution images were used to study their plasma emission structures and monitor their evolution as a function of frequency and time. With higher angular resolution imaging, we resolved the radio emission size scales to less than 1 km physical size at 100 km heights. The spectral index mapping of one of the long duration event showed signs of diffusion of plasma within the meteor trails. The unpolarized emission from the resolved radio components suggest resonant transition radiation as the possible radiation mechanism of MRAs.

Abstract:We present the first results of a solar radio event observed with the Owens Valley Radio Observatory Long Wavelength Array at metric wavelengths. We examine a complex event consisting of multiple radio sources/bursts associated with a fast coronal mass ejection (CME) and an M2.1 GOES soft X-ray flare from 2015 September 20. Images of 9 s cadence are used to analyze the event over a 120 minute period, and solar emission is observed out to a distance of ≈3.5 <i>R</i> <sub>⊙</sub>, with an instantaneous bandwidth covering 22 MHz within the frequency range of 40–70 MHz. We present our results from the investigation of the radio event, focusing particularly on one burst source that exhibits outward motion, which we classify as a moving type IV burst. We image the event at multiple frequencies and use the source centroids to obtain the velocity for the outward motion. Spatial and temporal comparison with observations of the CME in white light from the C2 coronagraph of the Large Angle and Spectrometric COronagraph, indicates an association of the outward motion with the core of the CME. By performing graduated-cylindrical-shell reconstruction of the CME, we constrain the density in the volume. The electron plasma frequency obtained from the density estimates do not allow us to completely dismiss plasma emission as the underlying mechanism. However, based on source height and smoothness of the emission in frequency and time, we argue that gyrosynchrotron is the more plausible mechanism. We use gyrosynchrotron spectral-fitting techniques to estimate the evolving physical conditions during the outward motion of this burst source.

Abstract:This study presents results from five months of meteor observations that included simultaneous and nearby very low frequency (VLF) wave detections. We explore the plausibility of VLF emissions from meteors resulting in the documented phenomena of simultaneous optical and audio signatures with meteor events. Most previous attempts to observe VLF emissions from meteors have been limited in duration and/or in area covered during observations. With the extended duration and an observational network of three cameras and two VLF receivers across Colorado, an exhaustive approach was taken to detect meteor VLF emissions. The ∼ 650 events collected were closely inspected for any signs of emissions, with an emphasis on brighter meteors and fireballs. The VLF data was filtered using interference mitigation techniques to eliminate spurious signals that could obscure the VLF signals of interest. By comparing the VLF spectral content at the time of meteors and during control times, we search for very small changes in the signal that would be statistically correlated with meteor observation times. Despite these efforts, no VLF emissions have been detected that cannot be attributed to other sources. Most commonly, lightning-generated sferics coincident with the time of meteor events lead to false attributions to meteors.

Abstract:Recently, low frequency, broadband radio emission has been observed accompanying bright meteors by the Long Wavelength Array (LWA). The broadband spectra between 20 and 60 MHz were captured for several events, while the spectral index (dependence of flux density on frequency, with $S_\nu \propto \nu^\alpha$) was estimated to be $-4\pm1$ during the peak of meteor afterglows. Here we present a survey of meteor emission and other transient events using the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) at 72-103 MHz. In our 322-hour survey, down to a $5\sigma$ detection threshold of 3.5 Jy/beam, no transient candidates were identified as intrinsic emission from meteors. We derived an upper limit of -3.7 (95% confidence limit) on the spectral index in our frequency range. We also report detections of other transient events, like reflected FM broadcast signals from small satellites, conclusively demonstrating the ability of the MWA to detect and track space debris on scales as small as 0.1 m in low Earth orbits.

A Two Year Survey for VLF Emission from Fireballs

Abstract:Here we report on a two year continuous survey to examine possible VLF signals associated with meteors brighter than magnitude -5. Our survey allowed both calibrated temporal and spatial correlations between VLF signals and fireball lightcurves. We used continuous observations from the Atmospheric Weather Electromagnetic System for Observation Modeling and Education (AWESOME) VLF receiver system (Cohen et al., 2010) deployed at the Elginfield Observatory near London, Ontario, Canada (43N, 81W) to monitor VLF radio signals and correlate with all-sky video recordings of fireballs. This survey from May 2017 to March 2019 was cued using fireballs detected by the Southern Ontario Meteor Network (Brown et al., 2010; Weryk et al., 2007). The GPS conditioned timing of the AWESOME system was continuously synchronized with video recordings directly in the video stream to ensure sub-frame VLF-optical time calibration. The AWESOME system has two orthogonal VLF antennas which permits directional calculation of incoming VLF signals, which were compared to the apparent optically measured locations of simultaneously detected fireballs. VLF events potentially linked to fireballs were checked against the National Lightning Detection Network (NLDN) database to remove false positive association with lightning. During the two year survey interval, over 80 bright meteors (apparent magnitude brighter than -5, brightest recorded event -7.8) were detected and compared to VLF signals detected by the AWESOME system. No definitive evidence was found for VLF emission from meteors up to a limiting magnitude of -7.8.

Abstract:Context.Mixed-morphology supernova remnants (MM SNRs) are a mysterious class of objects that display thermal X-ray emission within their radio shell. They are an older class of SNRs, and as such are profoundly affected by the environment into which they evolve. VRO 42.05.01 is a MM SNR of puzzling morphology in the direction of the Galactic anticentre.Aims.Low-frequency radio observations of supernova remnants are sensitive to synchrotron electrons accelerated in the shock front. We aim to compare the low-frequency emission to higher frequency observations to understand the environmental and shock acceleration conditions that have given rise to the observed properties of this source.Methods.We present a LOFAR High Band Antenna map centred at 143 MHz of the region of the Galactic plane centred atl = 166 ° , b = 3.5° at 143 MHz, with a resolution of 148″ and an rms noise of 4.4 mJy bm−1. Our map is sensitive to scales as large as 6°. We compared the LOw Frequency ARay (LOFAR) observations to archival higher frequency radio, infrared, and optical data to study the emission properties of the source in different spectral regimes. We did this both for the SNR and for OA 184, an H II region within our field of view.Results.We find that the radio spectral index of VRO 42.05.01 increases at low radio frequencies; i.e. the LOFAR flux is higher than expected from the measured spectral index value at higher radio frequencies. This observed curvature in the low-frequency end of the radio spectrum occurs primarily in the brightest regions of the source, while the fainter regions present a roughly constant power-law behaviour between 143 MHz and 2695 MHz. We favour an explanation for this steepening whereby radiative shocks have high compression ratios and electrons of different energies probe different length scales across the shocks, therefore sampling regions of different compression ratios.

Abstract:We present the first spectroscopic images of solar radio transients from the prototype for the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA), observed on 2010 March 27. Our observations span the instantaneous frequency band 170.9-201.6 MHz. Though our observing period is characterized as a period of `low' to `medium' activity, one broadband emission feature and numerous short-lived, narrowband, non-thermal emission features are evident. Our data represent a significant advance in low radio frequency solar imaging, enabling us to follow the spatial, spectral, and temporal evolution of events simultaneously and in unprecedented detail. The rich variety of features seen here reaffirms the coronal diagnostic capability of low radio frequency emission and provides an early glimpse of the nature of radio observations that will become available as the next generation of low frequency radio interferometers come on-line over the next few years.

Abstract:The low-frequency sky below $\sim$15 MHz (20 m) is obscured by the Earth's ionosphere, the layer of charged particles above the neutral atmosphere. Single spacecraft have made measurements in this band, but cannot achieve high or even moderate angular resolution because a telescope's resolution ($\theta$) is set by $\theta = \lambda/D$, where $\lambda$ is the wavelength and $D$ is the telescope diameter. For wavelengths that range from tens of meters to kilometers, a telescope must be hundreds of meters to many kilometers in diameter for even moderate resolution.

Observations of high definition symmetric quasi-periodic oscillations in the mid-latitude ionosphere with LOFAR

Abstract:We present broadband ionospheric scintillation observations of highly defined symmetric quasi-periodic oscillations (QPO: Maruyama 1991) caused by plasma structures in the midlatitude ionosphere using the LOw Frequency ARray (LOFAR: van Haarlem et al., 2013). Two case studies are shown, one from 15th December 2016, and one from 30th January 2018, in which well-defined main signal fades and secondary diffraction fringing are observed. In particular, the broadband observing capabilities of LOFAR permit us to see considerable frequency dependent behaviour in the QPOs which, to our knowledge, is a new result. We extract some of the clearest examples of scintillation arcs reported in an ionospheric context, from delay-Doppler spectral analysis of these two events. These arcs permit the extraction of propagation velocities for the plasma structures causing the QPOs ranging from 50 - 200 ms$^{-1}$, depending on the assumed altitude. The spacing between the individual plasma structures ranges between 5 - 20 km. The periodicities of the main signal fades in each event and, in the case of the 2018 data, co-temporal ionosonde data, suggest the propagation of the plasma structures causing the QPOs is in the E-region. Each of the two events is accurately reproduced using a Gaussian perturbation phase screen model. Individual signal fades and enhancements were modelled using small variations in total electron content (TEC) amplitudes of order 1 mTECu, demonstrating the sensitivity of LOFAR to very small fluctuations in ionospheric plasma density. To our knowledge these results are among the most detailed observations and modelling of QPOs in the literature.

Abstract:A host of new low-frequency radio telescopes seek to measure the 21-cm transition of neutral hydrogen from the early universe. These telescopes have the potential to directly probe star and galaxy formation at redshifts $20 \gtrsim z \gtrsim 7$, but are limited by the dynamic range they can achieve against foreground sources of low-frequency radio emission. Consequently, there is a growing demand for modern, high-fidelity maps of the sky at frequencies below 200 MHz for use in foreground modeling and removal. We describe a new widefield imaging technique for drift-scanning interferometers, Tikhonov-regularized $m$-mode analysis imaging. This technique constructs images of the entire sky in a single synthesis imaging step with exact treatment of widefield effects. We describe how the CLEAN algorithm can be adapted to deconvolve maps generated by $m$-mode analysis imaging. We demonstrate Tikhonov-regularized $m$-mode analysis imaging using the Owens Valley Long Wavelength Array (OVRO-LWA) by generating 8 new maps of the sky north of $\delta=-30^\circ$ with 15 arcmin angular resolution, at frequencies evenly spaced between 36.528 MHz and 73.152 MHz, and $\sim$800 mJy/beam thermal noise. These maps are a 10-fold improvement in angular resolution over existing full-sky maps at comparable frequencies, which have angular resolutions $\ge 2^\circ$. Each map is constructed exclusively from interferometric observations and does not represent the globally averaged sky brightness. Future improvements will incorporate total power radiometry, improved thermal noise, and improved angular resolution -- due to the planned expansion of the OVRO-LWA to 2.6 km baselines. These maps serve as a first step on the path to the use of more sophisticated foreground filters in 21-cm cosmology incorporating the measured angular and frequency structure of all foreground contaminants.

Abstract:AO 0235+164 is a very compact, flat spectrum radio source identified as a BL Lac object at a redshift of z=0.94. It is one of the most violently variable extragalactic objects at both optical and radio wavelengths. The radio structure of the source revealed by various ground-based VLBI observations is dominated by a nearly unresolved compact component at almost all available frequencies. Dual-frequency space VLBI observations of AO 0235+164 were made with the VSOP mission in January-February 1999. The array of the Japanese HALCA satellite and co-observing ground radio telescopes in Australia, Japan, China and South Africa allowed us to study AO 0235+164 with an unprecedented angular resolution at frequencies of 1.6 and 5 GHz. We report on the sub-milliarcsecond structural properties of the source. The 5-GHz observations led to an estimate of T_B > 5.8 x 10^{13} K for the rest-frame brightness temperature of the core, which is the highest value measured with VSOP to date.

Abstract:Our current sampling of the near-Earth space environment is wholly insufficient to measure the highly variable processes therein and make predictions on par with lower atmospheric weather. We sketch out the scientific rationale for a network of radio instruments delivering dense observations of the near-Earth space environment and the broad steps necessary to implement wide-scale coverage in the next 30 years.

Abstract:In February 2017, the blazar OJ~287 underwent a period of intense multiwavelength activity. It reached a new historic peak in the soft X-ray (0.3-10 keV) band, as measured by Swift-XRT. This event coincides with a very-high-energy (VHE) $\gamma$-ray outburst that led VERITAS to detect emission above 100 GeV, with a detection significance of $10\sigma$ (from 2016 December 9 to 2017 March 31). The time-averaged VHE $\gamma$-ray spectrum was consistent with a soft power law ($\Gamma = -3.81 \pm 0.26$) and an integral flux corresponding to $\sim2.4\%$ that of the Crab Nebula above the same energy. Contemporaneous data from multiple instruments across the electromagnetic spectrum reveal complex flaring behavior, primarily in the soft X-ray and VHE bands. To investigate the possible origin of such an event, our study focuses on three distinct activity states: before, during, and after the February 2017 peak. The spectral energy distributions during these periods suggest the presence of at least two non-thermal emission zones, with the more compact one responsible for the observed flare. Broadband modeling results and observations of a new radio knot in the jet of OJ~287 in 2017 are consistent with a flare originating from a strong recollimation shock outside the radio core.

Abstract:Remarkable progress has been made in understanding turbulent astrophysical plasmas in past decades including, notably, the solar wind and the interstellar medium. In the case of the solar wind, much of this progress has relied on in situ measurements from space-borne instruments. However, ground-based radio observations also have played a significant role and have the potential to play an even bigger role. In particular, using distant background sources (quasars, pulsars, satellite beacons) to transilluminate the foreground corona and solar wind, a variety of radio propagation phenomena can be used to map plasma properties of the solar corona and heliosphere, as well as the warm interstellar medium. These include angular broadening, interplanetary and interstellar scintillations, and differential Faraday rotation. These observations are highly complementary to in situ observations of the solar wind, and could be a mainstay of investigations into turbulence of the ISM. We point out that the Next Generation Very Large Array (ngVLA) fulfills all the requirements necessary to exploit radio observations of astrophysical turbulence fully.

LOFAR observations of gravitational wave merger events: O3 results and O4 strategy

Abstract:The electromagnetic counterparts to gravitational wave (GW) merger events hold immense scientific value, but are difficult to detect due to the typically large localisation errors associated with GW events. The Low-Frequency Array (LOFAR) is an attractive GW follow-up instrument owing to its high sensitivity, large instantaneous field of view, and ability to automatically trigger on events to probe potential prompt emission within minutes. Here, we report on 144-MHz LOFAR radio observations of three GW merger events containing at least one neutron star that were detected during the third GW observing run. Specifically, we probe 9 and 16 per cent of the location probability density maps of S190426c and S200213t, respectively, and place limits at the location of an interesting optical transient (PS19hgw/AT2019wxt) found within the localisation map of S191213g. While these GW events are not particularly significant, we use multi-epoch LOFAR data to devise a sensitive wide-field GW follow-up strategy to be used in future GW observing runs. In particular, we improve on our previously published strategy by implementing direction dependent calibration and mosaicing, resulting in nearly an order of magnitude increase in sensitivity and more uniform coverage. We achieve a uniform $5\sigma$ sensitivity of $870$ $\mu$Jy across a single instantaneous LOFAR pointing's 21 deg$^{2}$ core, and a median sensitivity of 1.1 mJy when including the full 89 deg$^{2}$ hexagonal beam pattern. We also place the deepest transient surface density limits yet on of order month timescales for surveys between 60--340 MHz (0.017 deg$^{-2}$ above $2.0$ mJy and 0.073 deg$^{-2}$ above $1.5$ mJy).

Observations of the 2024 May 14 X8.7 Solar Flare with the Goldstone-Apple Valley Radio Telescope (GAVRT)

Abstract:The Goldstone-Apple Valley Radio Telescope (GAVRT) project conducts a regular monitoring program of the Sun. The GAVRT Solar Patrol project uses a 34 m diameter antenna to produce raster-scan maps of the Sun simultaneously at 4 frequencies ranging from approximately 3 GHz to 14 GHz. On 2024 May 14, as part of regular GAVRT Solar Patrol observations, raster maps were produced when an X8.7 solar flare occurred in active region AR13664. Here we present the GAVRT maps of the May 14 flare along with microwave flux density spectra showing the non-thermal microwave burst emission from mildly relativistic electrons produced in this largest flare of Solar Cycle 25 to date. AR13664 reappeared as AR13697 and continued to be very active, producing X flares while GAVRT monitored its activity. GAVRT microwave data provide a powerful complement to the energetic electrons tracked by X-ray, millimeter-wave and {\gamma}-ray emissions.

Abstract:By volume, more than 99% of the solar system has not been imaged at radio frequencies. Almost all of this space (the solar wind) can be traversed by fast electrons producing radio emissions at frequencies lower than the terrestrial ionospheric cutoff, which prevents observation from the ground. To date, radio astronomy-capable space missions consist of one or a few satellites, typically far from each other, which measure total power from the radio sources, but cannot produce images with useful angular resolution. To produce such images, we require arrays of antennas distributed over many wavelengths (hundreds of meters to kilometers) to permit aperture synthesis imaging. Such arrays could be free-flying arrays of microsatellites or antennas laid out on the lunar surface. In this white paper, we present the lunar option. If such an array were in place by 2020, it would provide context for observations during Solar Probe Plus perihelion passes. Studies of the lunar ionosphere's density and time variability are also important goals. This white paper applies to the Solar and Heliospheric Physics study panel.

Abstract:We have developed a three dimensional (3D) interferometric beamforming technique for imaging lightning flashes using Very-High Frequency (VHF) radio data recorded from several hundreds antennas with baselines up to 100~km as offered by the Low Frequency Array (LOFAR). The long baselines allow us to distinguish fine structures on the scale of meters while the large number of antennas allow us to observe processes that radiate at the same intensity as the background when using a time resolution that is close to the impulse-response time of the system, 100~ns. The new beamforming imaging technique is complementary to our existing impulsive imaging technique. We apply this new tool to the imaging of a four stepped negative leaders in two flashes. For one flash, we observe the dynamics of coronal flashes that are emitted in the stepping process. Additionally, we show that the intensity emitted in VHF during the stepping process follows a power-law over 4 orders of magnitude in intensity for four leaders in two different lightning storms.
