Abstract:Wind characteristics are significant parameters in evaluating the wind loads on high-rise buildings, and an appropriately modelled boundary layer flow is used in wind tunnel tests with the surrounding building models, approximately 1 km in diameter. However, the fetch necessary to generate an actual flow field around a target building is yet to be determined. Therefore, in the present study, the statistical vertical wind profiles over the urban areas around Tokyo Station are evaluated using large eddy simulation , and the actual vertical profiles of the mean wind speed are measured using Doppler lidar for two years to validate the simulation results. The effects of the modelled areas and inflow turbulence characteristics on the vertical wind profiles are investigated by comparing the simulation and measurement results. The vertical wind profiles from the seaside and cityside can be appropriately simulated only when appropriate inflow turbulence and areas of urban geometries are employed. The vertical profiles of the mean wind speed and turbulence intensity in the condition of urban geometry around Tokyo Station are affected by the inflow turbulence characteristics. Upwind high-rise buildings of up to several kilometres should be included while evaluating the cladding wind load to reflect the actual flow conditions.
