Abstract:In this paper we study the existence of closed convex hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space Rn+1 such that a Weingarten curvature, regarded as a function of their unit normal, is equal to a given positive function on the unit sphere Sn. Two classical problems of this type, namely the Christoffel problem [6] and the Minkowski problem [16], which address respectively the cases of harmonic and Gauss curvature, were completely solved in the 1970’s [7,9,17]. Besides the harmonic and Gauss curvatures, the most interesting Weingarten curvatures are probably the mean curvature, or more generally the k-curvatures (1 ≤ k ≤ n)

Abstract:We study the problem of finding complete conformal metrics determined by some symmetric function of the modified Schouten tensor on compact manifolds with boundary; which reduces to a Dirichlet problem. We prove the existence of the solution under some suitable conditions. In particular, we prove that every smooth compact n-dimensional manifold with boundary, with n >= 3, admits a complete Riemannian metric g whose Ricci curvature Ric(g) and scalar curvature R-g satisfydet(Ric(g) - R(g)g) = const.This result generalizes Aviles and McOwen's in the scalar curvature case.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the existence of various harmonic maps from Hermitian manifolds to Kaehler, Hermitian and Riemannian manifolds respectively. By using refined Bochner formulas on Hermitian (possibly non-Kaehler) manifolds, we derive new rigidity results on Hermitian harmonic maps from compact Hermitian manifolds to Riemannian manifolds, and we also obtain the complex analyticity of pluri-harmonic maps from compact complex manifolds to compact Kaehler manifolds (and Riemannian manifolds) with non-degenerate curvatures, which are analogous to several fundamental results in [28,Siu], [14,Jost-Yau] and [26, Sampson].

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the geometry of the moduli space of curves by using the curvature properties of direct image sheaves of vector bundles. We show that the moduli space $(M_g, \omega_{WP})$ of curves with genus $g>1$ has dual-Nakano negative and semi-Nakano-negative curvature, and in particular, it has non-positive Riemannain curvature operator and also non-positive complex sectional curvature. As applications, we prove that any submanifold in $M_g$ which is totally geodesic in $A_g$ with finite volume must be a ball quotient. We also show that, on a Kodaira (deformation) surface, there is no K\"ahler metric with non-positive Riemannain sectional curvature although it possesses K\"ahler metrics with strictly negative holomorphic bisectional curvature.

Abstract:We study the evolution equations for a regularized version of Dirac-harmonic maps from closed Riemannian surfaces. We establish the existence of a global weak solution for the regularized problem, which is smooth away from finitely many singularities. Moreover, we discuss the convergence of the evolution equations and address the question if we can remove the regularization in the end.

Abstract:By simplifying the first and the second variation formulas of the energy functional and generalizing the Weitzenbock formula, we study the stability and the rigidity of harmonic maps between Finsler manifolds. It is proved that any nondegenerate harmonic map from a compact Einstein Riemannian manifold with nonnegative scalar curvature to a Berwald manifold with nonpositive flag curvature is totally geodesic and there is no nondegenerate stable harmonic map from a Riemannian unit sphere S-n (n > 2) to any Finsler manifold.

We derive a number of analytic and geometric conditions under which harmonic maps are constant and which force biharmonic maps to be harmonic. In particular, we show that biharmonic maps of finite energy from the two-dimensional cigar soliton must be harmonic.

We also give a structure theorem of Dirac-harmonic maps from a Riemann surface generalizing result previously only known in the case when source manifold is a two sphere.

Abstract:Motivated from the action functional for bosonic strings with extrinsic curvature term we introduce an action functional for maps between Riemannian manifolds that interpolates between the actions for harmonic and biharmonic maps. Critical points of this functional will be called interpolating sesqui-harmonic maps. In this article we initiate a rigorous mathematical treatment of this functional and study various basic aspects of its critical points.

Abstract:Abstract In this article we introduce a natural extension of the well-studied equation for harmonic maps between Riemannian manifolds by assuming that the target manifold is equipped with a connection that is metric but has non-vanishing torsion. Such connections have already been classified in the work of Cartan (1924). The maps under consideration do not arise as critical points of an energy functional leading to interesting mathematical challenges. We will perform a first mathematical analysis of these maps which we will call harmonic maps with torsion.

Abstract:Harmonic maps constitute a powerful tool for the analysis of moduli and Teichmuller spaces of compact Riemann surfaces. These moduli and Teichmuller spaces parametrize the different conformal structures a given compact differentiable surface F of some genus p can carry, together with a topological marking in the Teichmuller case. That is, each point in the moduli space Mp or the Teichmuller space Tp corresponds to some (marked) Riemann surface of genus p, that is, to some conformal structure on F . Mp then is a quotient of Tp by the mapping class group Γp, the group of homotopy classes of oriented diffeomorphisms of F . Since some nontrivial elements of Γp have fixed points, Mp acquires some quotient singularities. However, a suitable finite covering of Mp is free from singularities, that is, a manifold. Therefore, for many aspects, the singularities of Mp can be ignored, and this will sometimes simplify our discussion. – In this review, we shall confine ourselves mostly to the case p ≥ 2 which is the most difficult and most interesting case. Harmonic maps come from Riemannian geometry. They are defined as maps h : M → N between Riemannian manifolds that minimize a certain variational integral, called the energy. Thus, they depend on the Riemannian metrics of M and N . The theory works best when the metric of N has nonpositive sectional curvature. Harmonic maps can then be applied to moduli or Teichmuller spaces in two different ways. On one hand, one can look at harmonic maps to, from, or between Riemann surfaces and study how the harmonic maps or quantities associated to them, like their energy, depend on the underlying conformal structures. This is facilitated by the fact that the harmonic maps in question are unique in their homotopy classes, as we are looking at the case of genus p ≥ 2 which implies that the Riemann surfaces can be equipped with a hyperbolic metric, that is, one with constant negative curvature. Abstract:The normal map given by Birkhoff orthogonality yields extensions of principal, Gaussian and mean curvatures to surfaces immersed in three-dimensional spaces whose geometry is given by an arbitrary norm and which are also called Minkowski spaces. We obtain characterizations of the Minkowski Gaussian curvature in terms of surface areas, and respective generalizations of the classical theorems of Huber, Willmore, Alexandrov, and Bertrand-Diguet-Puiseux are derived. A generalization of Weyl's formula for the volume of tubes and some estimates for volumes and areas in terms of curvature are obtained, and in addition we discuss also two-dimensional subcases of the results in more detail.

Abstract:Abstract In this article we show that for every finite area hyperbolic surface X of type ( g , n ) {(g,n)} and any harmonic Beltrami differential μ on X, then the magnitude of μ at any point of small injectivity radius is uniform bounded from above by the ratio of the Weil–Petersson norm of μ over the square root of the systole of X up to a uniform positive constant multiplication. We apply the uniform bound above to show that the Weil–Petersson Ricci curvature, restricted at any hyperbolic surface of short systole in the moduli space, is uniformly bounded from below by the negative reciprocal of the systole up to a uniform positive constant multiplication. As an application, we show that the average total Weil–Petersson scalar curvature over the moduli space is uniformly comparable to - g {-g} as the genus g goes to infinity.
On conformal biharmonic maps and hypersurfaces

Abstract:In this article we initiate a thorough geometric study of the conformal bienergy functional which consists of the standard bienergy augmented by two additional curvature terms. The conformal bienergy is conformally invariant in dimension four and its precise structure is motivated by the Paneitz operator from conformal geometry. The critical points of the conformal bienergy are called conformal biharmonic maps. Besides establishing a number of basic results on conformal biharmonic maps, we pay special attention to conformal biharmonic hypersurfaces in space forms. For hypersurfaces in spheres, we determine all conformal biharmonic hyperspheres and then we classify all conformal biharmonic generalized Clifford tori. Moreover, in sharp contrast to biharmonic hypersurfaces, we show that there also exist conformal biharmonic hypersurfaces of hyperbolic space, pointing out a fundamental difference between biharmonic and conformal biharmonic hypersurfaces. Finally, we also study the stability of the conformal biharmonic hyperspheres in spheres and explicitly compute their index and nullity. In particular, we obtain that the index of the equator $\mathbb{S}^4$ of $\mathbb{S}^5$ is zero, i.e., it is stable, while the index of the equator $\mathbb{S}^5$ of $\mathbb{S}^6$ is seven.
