Abstract:Organic semiconductors are carbon-based materials that combine optoelectronic properties with simple fabrication and the scope for tuning by changing their chemical structure 1,2,3 . They have been successfully used to make organic light-emitting diodes 2,4,5 (OLEDs, now widely found in mobile phone displays and televisions), solar cells 1 , transistors 6 and sensors 7 . However, making electrically driven organic semiconductor lasers is very challenging 8,9 . It is difficult because organic semiconductors typically support only low current densities, suffer substantial absorption from injected charges and triplets, and have additional losses due to contacts 10,11 . In short, injecting charges into the gain medium leads to intolerable losses. Here we take an alternative approach in which charge injection and lasing are spatially separated, thereby greatly reducing losses. We achieve this by developing an integrated device structure that efficiently couples an OLED, with exceptionally high internal-light generation, with a polymer distributed feedback laser. Under the electrical driving of the integrated structure, we observe a threshold in light output versus drive current, with a narrow emission spectrum and the formation of a beam above the threshold. These observations confirm lasing. Our results provide an organic electronic device that has not been previously demonstrated, and show that indirect electrical pumping by an OLED is a very effective way of realizing an electrically driven organic semiconductor laser. This provides an approach to visible lasers that could see applications in spectroscopy, metrology and sensing.

A New Organic Laser Material Design Toward Ultra‐Low Amplified Spontaneous Red Emission and Ultra‐Bright Electroluminescence

Abstract:New red‐emitting laser Cibalackrot dimer enables a 250% increase in oscillator strengths and stimulated emission cross‐sections to lead to a low solid‐state Eth of 4.5 ± 0.3 μJ cm−2 at λASE = 655 nm. OLEDs with the dimer show minimal efficiency roll‐off in DC mode, reaching current densities of 90 A m−2 and brightness levels of ≈710 000 cd m−2 in pulsed operation. Significant efforts are dedicated to developing new classes of organic semiconductor materials to achieve electrically pumped lasing. However, further advancements are necessary to understand the relationship between the structure and property for the creation of innovative laser materials with high stability, low triplet yield, ultra‐low lasing threshold, and low‐efficiency roll‐off at ultra‐bright electroluminescence. Here, a new design principle is validated for organic semiconductor laser materials, demonstrating simultaneous enhancement in the key figures of merit of low amplified spontaneous emission thresholds (Eth), efficient electroluminescence, and low triplet yields. By applying the Einstein stimulated emission rate equation and Strickler–Berg approximation, Two red‐emitting laser dimers of Cibalackrot with different linkers are constructed, leading to giant enhancement (≈250%) in oscillator strengths, and stimulated emission cross‐sections. When blended in poly(9,9‐dioctylfluorene‐alt‐benzothiadiazole), the new dimers achieve an ultra‐low Eth (4.5 ± 0.3 μJ cm−2) in the deep red region (λASE = 655 nm), among the lowest reported for deep‐red emitters. Organic light‐emitting diodes (OLEDs) utilizing the dimer blend exhibit low‐efficiency roll‐off under DC mode. Under pulse operation, the OLEDs achieve high current densities (90 A m−2) and ultrahigh brightness (≈710 000 cd m−2). These findings highlight the dimerization design as an excellent platform to advance organic semiconductor laser materials.

Abstract:Lasing applications have spread over various aspects of human life. To meet the developing trends of the laser industry towards being miniature, portable, and highly integrated, new laser technologies are in urgent demand. Organic semiconductors are promising gain medium candidates for novel laser devices, due to their convenient processing techniques, ease of spectral and chemical tuning, low refractive indexes, mechanical flexibilities, and low thresholds,etc.organic solid-state lasers (OSSLs) open up a new horizon of simple, low-cost, time-saving, versatile and environmental-friendly manufacturing technologies for new and desirable laser structures (micro-, asymmetric, flexible,etc.) to unleash the full potential of semiconductor lasers for future electronics. Besides the development of optical feedback structures, the design and synthesis of robust organic gain media is critical as a vigorous aspect of OSSLs. Herein, we provide a comprehensive review of recent advances in organic gain materials, mainly focused on organic semiconductors for OSSLs. The significant breakthroughs toward electrical pumping of OSSLs are emphasized. Opportunities, challenges and future research directions for the design of organic gain media are also discussed.

Abstract:Organic solid-state semiconductor lasers are attracting ever-increasing interest for their potential application in future photonic circuits. Despite the great progress made in recent years, an organic laser from 3D chiral structures has not been achieved. Now, the first example of an organic nano-laser from the micro-helix structure of an achiral molecule is presented. Highly regular micro-helixes with left/right-handed helicity from a distyrylbenzene derivative (HM-DSB) were fabricated and characterized under microscope spectrometers. These chiral micro-helixes exhibit unique photonic properties, including helicity-dependent circularly polarized luminescence (CPL), periodic optical waveguiding, and length-dependent amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) behavior. The successful observation of laser behavior from the organic micro-helix extends our understanding to morphology chirality of organic photonic materials and provides a new design strategy towards chiral photonic circuits.

Abstract:Organic solid-state lasers are reviewed, with a special emphasis on works published during the last decade. Referring originally to dyes in solid-state polymeric matrices, organic lasers also include the rich family of organic semiconductors, paced by the rapid development of organic light emitting diodes. Organic lasers are broadly tunable coherent sources are potentially compact, convenient and manufactured at low-costs. In this review, we describe the basic photophysics of the materials used as gain media in organic lasers with a specific look at the distinctive feature of dyes and semiconductors. We also outline the laser architectures used in state-of-the-art organic lasers and the performances of these devices with regard to output power, lifetime, and beam quality. A survey of the recent trends in the field is given, highlighting the latest developments in terms of wavelength coverage, wavelength agility, efficiency and compactness, or towards integrated low-cost sources, with a special focus on the great challenges remaining for achieving direct electrical pumping. Finally, we discuss the very recent demonstration of new kinds of organic lasers based on polaritons or surface plasmons, which open new and very promising routes in the field of organic nanophotonics.

Abstract:Conventional materials discovery is a laborious and time‐consuming process that can take decades from initial conception of the material to commercialization. Recent developments in materials acceleration platforms promise to accelerate materials discovery using automation of experiments coupled with machine learning. However, most of the automation efforts in chemistry focus on synthesis and compound identification, with integrated target property characterization receiving less attention. In this work, we introduce an automated platform for the discovery of molecules as gain mediums for organic semiconductor lasers, a problem that has been challenging for conventional approaches. Our platform encompasses automated lego‐like synthesis, product identification, and optical characterization that can be executed in a fully integrated end‐to‐end fashion. Using this workflow to screen organic laser candidates, we have discovered 8 potential candidates for organic lasers. We test the lasing threshold of 4 molecules in thin‐film devices and find 2 molecules with state‐of‐the‐art performance. Abstract:The rapid development of integrated circuits from the electron tube to the transistor has made the electronic components in integrated circuits develop towards miniaturization, which results in the growing demand for micro/nanoscale solid-state lasers. Organic semiconductor materials are vital in various optoelectronic devices, such as field effect transistors, light-emitting diodes and optical waveguides. Especially, the solid-state laser behavior of organic micro/nanocrystals relying on intermolecular interactions are expected to be promising candidates in constructing novel miniaturized electronics due to their adjustable physicochemical properties, tunable optical performance and the built-in cavity for optical confinement. However, there are still many difficulties to overcome before organic crystals are actually served as components in integrated circuits. Herein, we summarize and look forward to the future development directions of organic micro/nanocrystal lasers.

Abstract:Laser is one of the most important discoveries in the 20th century, and inorganic semiconductor lasers (ISCL) are most frequently used in many applications nowadays. Organic semiconductor lasers (OSCL) have many attractive features when they compared to ISCLs, such as flexibility, human friendliness, feasible and inexpensive production process, light weight, and multicolor emission. However, electrically driven OSCLs (el-OSCL) have not yet been realized, although they are possible in an optically driven mode. Here, we report that an el-OSCL can be realized in field-effect transistor (FET) structure. The FET el-OSCL with distributed feedback (DFB) construction is made using a BP3T single crystal as a lasing medium electrostatically laminated on a silicon substrate modified with periodically patterned polystyrene. An emergent sharp-linewidth emission spectrum to the resolution limit of a detector and a non-linear increase in intensity above the threshold current density of ca. 1 kA cm-2 was observed, being indicative of lasing. Discussions on the possible realization of lasing in el-OSCLs can be made from the comparison between optical and electrical-driven mode.

Minimizing Efficiency Roll-Off in Organic Emitters via Enhancing Radiative Process and Reducing Binding Energy: A Theory Insight

Abstract:Organic solid-state lasers have received increasing attention due to their great potential for realizing organic continuous-wave or electrically driven lasers. Moreover, they exhibit significant promise for optoelectronic devices due to their chemically tunable optoelectronic properties and cost-effective self-assembly traits. Recently, a great progress has been made in organic solid-state lasers via spatially separated charge injection and lasing. However, making directly electrically driven organic semiconductor lasers is very challenging. It is difficult because of a number of excitonic losses caused by the spin-forbidden nature as well as serious efficiency roll-off at a high current density. Here, a multifunction gain material, functioning both as a thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitter with exceptional optical gain and as a source of phosphorescence, was theoretically investigated. The new molecule we designed exhibits a reduction of triplet accumulation through an effective exciton radiative process (5-fold boost in figure of merit) and significantly decreased exciton binding energy (dipole moment from 5.77 to 14.03 D), which benefit amplified spontaneous emission and lasing emission. Our work provides theoretical insights into organic solid-state lasers and may contribute to the development of new and efficient laser-gaining molecules.

Abstract:Inorganic and organic-inorganic (hybrid) perovskite semiconductor materials have attracted worldwide scientific attention and research effort as the new wonder semiconductor material in optoelectronics. Their excellent physical and electronic properties have been exploited to boost the solar cells efficiency beyond 23% and captivate their potential as competitors to the dominant silicon solar cells technology. However, the fundamental principles in Physics, dictate that an excellent direct band gap material for photovoltaic applications must be also an excellent light emitter candidate. This has been realized for the case of perovskite-based light emitting diodes (LEDs) but much less for the case of the respective laser devices. Here, the strides, exclusively in lasing, made since 2014 are presented for the first time. The solution processability, low temperature crystallization, formation of nearly defect free, nanostructures, the long range ambipolar transport, the direct energy band gap, the high spectral emission tunability over the entire visible spectrum and the almost 100% external luminescence efficiency show perovskite semiconductors’ potential to transform the nanophotonics sector. The operational principles, the various adopted material and laser configurations along the future challenges are reviewed and presented in this paper.

Abstract:The very broad emission bands of organic semiconductor materials are, in theory, suitable for achieving versatile solid-state lasers; however, most of organic materials only lase at short wavelength corresponding to the 0-1 transition governed by the Franck-Condon (FC) principle. A strategy is developed to overcome the limit of FC principle for tailoring the output of microlasers over a wide range based on the controlled vibronic emission of organic materials at microcrystal state. For the first time, the output wavelength of organic lasers is tailored across all vibronic (0-1, 0-2, 0-3, and even 0-4) bands spanning the entire emission spectrum.

Abstract:Organic semiconductor lasers (OSLs) have emerged as particularly challenging. One of the major issues preventing the successful realization of lasing from organic emitters under electrically pumped conditions is the inevitable population of triplet excitons. Herein, a novel concept is presented to construct triplet–singlet guest–host gain systems with incorporating iridium complexes as the triplet sensitizers and a fluorescent conjugated polymer as the gain media to achieve light amplification. The direct triplet–singlet energy transfer process is confirmed by photoluminescence excitation spectra, photoinduced absorption spectroscopy, and fluorescence transients of the blend samples. Successful light amplification with a threefold lower amplified spontaneous emission threshold and much better lasing performance is demonstrated for the resulting triplet–singlet guest–host system as compared with the corresponding gain system without triplet sensitizers. Moreover, under electrically driven conditions, the fluorescent organic light‐emitting diodes (OLEDs) based on the triplet–singlet guest–host systems with "triplet sensitizers" exhibit enhanced electrical performance relative to those without. The work suggests an effective general methodology to utilize both the singlet and triplet excitons to contribute to the light amplification with excellent electrical performance in OLEDs, opening prospects toward attempting electrically pumped OSLs.

Abstract:Electrically driven organic lasers are among the best lasing devices due to their rich variety of emission colors as well as other advantages, including printability, flexibility, and stretchability. However, electrically driven lasing in organic materials has not yet been demonstrated because of serious luminescent efficiency roll-off under high current density. Recently, we found that the organic ambipolar single-crystal transistor is an excellent candidate for lasing devices because it exhibits less efficient roll-off, high current density, and high luminescent efficiency. Although a single-mode resonator combined with light-emitting transistors (LETs) is necessary for electrically driven lasing devices, the fragility of organic crystals has strictly limited the fabrication of resonators, and LETs with optical cavities have never been fabricated until now. To achieve this goal, we improved the soft ultraviolet-nanoimprint lithography method and demonstrated electroluminescence from a single-crystal LET with a grating resonator, which is a crucial milestone for future organic lasers.
Lasing Operation under Long‐Pulse Excitation in Solution‐Processed Organic Gain Medium: Toward CW Lasing in Organic Semiconductors

Abstract:High mechanical flexibility and wavelength tunability of organic semiconductor materials have propelled the development of organic semiconductor lasers (OSLs) as a complementary technology to current inorganic lasers. While excellent progress has been made across multiple aspects of OSLs, demonstration of long‐pulse operation [quasi‐continuous wave (qCW) or continuous wave (CW)] lasing has presented significant challenges due to the detrimental accumulation of triplets under long‐pulse photoexcitation and substantial quenching of singlet excitons, arising from singlet‐triplet annihilation (STA). In particular, qCW or CW lasing from solution‐processed OSL materials has not been reported, and thus remains a long‐thought objective in optoelectronic research. Using a novel bis(N‐carbazolylstyryl)‐9,9‐dihexylfluorene (BSFCz), the first solution‐processable organic laser dye demonstrating lasing oscillation in the long‐pulse photoexcitation regime (up to 10 ms pulse width) with a low threshold (420 W cm−2), which in part can be attributed to its negligible spectral overlap between triplet excited‐state absorption and laser emission, is herein reported. Temporal emission profiles below and above the lasing threshold also demonstrate that STA has a negligible effect on emission. These combined observations show BSFCz incur low losses due to triplet excited‐states, leading to extremely small changes in lasing thresholds when moving from pulsed to qCW (>1 ms) excitation.

Abstract:Organic semiconductor nanowires have inherent advantages, such as amenability to low-cost, low-temperature processing, and inherent four-level energy systems, which will significantly contribute to the organic solid-state lasers (OSSLs) and miniaturized laser devices. However, the realization of near-infrared (NIR) organic nanowire lasers is always a big challenge due to the difficultly in fabrication of organic nanowires with diameters of approximate to 100 nm and material issues such as low photoluminescence quantum efficiency in the red-NIR region. What is more, the achievement of wavelength-tunable OSSLs has also encountered enormous challenge. This study first demonstrates the 720 nm NIR lasing with a low lasing threshold of approximate to 1.4 mu J cm(-2) from the organic single-crystalline nanowires, which are self-assembled from small organic molecules of (E)-3-(4-(dimethylamino)-2-methoxyphenyl)-1-(1-hydroxynaphthalen-2-yl)prop-2-en-1-one through a facile solution-phase growth method. Notably, these individual nanowires' Fabry-Perot cavity can alternatively provide the red-NIR lasing action at 660 or 720 nm from the 0-1 or 0-2 radiative transition channels, and the single (660 or 720 nm)/dual-wavelength (660 and 720 nm) laser action can be achieved by modulating the length of these organic nanowires due to the intrinsic self-absorption. These easily-fabricated organic nanowires are natural laser sources, which offer considerable promise for coherent light devices integrated on the optics microchip.

Abstract:Based on organic semiconductor polymer MEH-PPV ridge waveguide, a new type of 1-D organic edge-emitting photonic crystal laser is proposed, which consists two perfect photonic crystal structures as a resonator to apply feedback and a defective photonic crystal as a mode selection component to suppress the multi-mode competition. It realized lasing at a wavelength of 618nm.
