Abstract:The aging global population, with their increasing need for urology care combined with a decreasing number of urologists, has resulted in the need for increased scope of practice for nurses providing urology care worldwide. The nurse practitioner (NP) role is ideally placed to absorb some of this additional workload. Compared with the United States and United Kingdom, the urology NP role in Australia and New Zealand (NZ) is relatively new, with the first NZ urology NP recognized in 2005 and the first Australian urology NP endorsed in 2007. There has been a slow increase in the numbers of urology NPs receiving accreditation in Australia and NZ; currently, New Zealand has three urology NPs. The exact number of urology NPs in Australia is uncertain, as to date this information is not captured on a national level, but the number is estimated to be between 20 and 25.
