The Idealised Lives of Women: Visions of Beauty in Chinese Popular Prints of the Qing Dynasty

Abstract:Les estampes populaires offrent en Chine un aperçu unique et vivant de la vie quotidienne. Cet article traite d’un type particulier d’estampe populaire produit à travers toute la Chine à l’époque de la dynastie Qing et diffusé à un large public. Il représente des modèles féminins ou « Beautés ». Les exemples ici présentés couvrent toute l’époque Qing et permettent de souligner le caractère homogène des idéaux relatifs à la beauté des femmes, à leur statut social et à leur rôle dans la société. Les sources historiques et littéraires permettent, pour leur part, de mieux saisir le contexte culturel de la création de telles estampes.民 間 版 畫 為 了 解 中 國 歷 史 上 普 通 人 的 日 常 生 活 提 供 了 獨 特 而 生 動 的 視 角 。 本 文 將 探 討 其 中 一 種 類 別 : 仕 女 圖 。 在 清 代 , 此 類 版 畫 遍 及 全 中 國 , 它 們 向 大 眾 展 示 了 女 性 的 理 想 化 生 活 。 從 清 初 至 清 末 出 版 的 仕 女 圖 中 不 難 發 現 , 關 於 女 性 美 、 女 性 的 社 會 地 位 以 及 社 會 角 色 的 種 種 理 想 型 具 有 大 致 相 同 的 特 點 。 文 章 還 將 利 用 歷 史 及 文 學 資 料 , 以 闡 明 此 類 版 畫 萌 生 的 文 化 背 景 。中 国 の 民 衆 的 版 画 に は 、 庶 民 の 日 常 生 活 を 映 し だ す ユ ニ ー ク で 生 き 生 き し た 情 景 が 描 か れ て い る 。 本 論 は 、 清 朝 に 中 国 全 土 で 作 成 さ れ 、 社 会 の 広 い 層 に 普 及 し た あ る 種 の 版 画 に つ い て 論 ず る も の で あ る 。 そ こ に は 「 美 女 」 の イ メ ー ジ が 描 か れ て い る 。 こ こ で 紹 介 す る 事 例 は 、 清 代 の 全 期 間 に わ た り 、 理 想 化 さ れ た 美 女 の 社 会 的 地 位 や 社 会 に お け る 彼 女 た ち の 役 割 が 、 一 貫 し た 観 念 と し て 存 在 し た こ と を 示 し て い る 。 ま た 歴 史 資 料 や 文 学 作 品 を 参 照 す る こ と に よ り 、 そ れ ら の 版 画 が 作 ら れ た 文 化 的 背 景 を よ り 正 確 に 把 握 す る こ と が で き る 。Popular prints provide unique and vivid insights into the lives of ordinary people in Chinese history. This article focuses on a type of popular print called a “beauty print.” Such prints were produced across China in the Qing dynasty, presenting idealised lives of women to a popular audience. Examples of prints from the beginning to the end of the Qing dynasty have been selected to emphasise the generally homogeneous nature of ideals relating to the beauty of women, their social status, and their roles in society. Historical and literary sources are used to elucidate the broader cultural context of the prints.
