Abstract:• Sojourn time refers to the duration of time a woman is asymptomatic (clinically occult) but the breast cancer is detectable by mammography. • An optimal breast cancer screening interval maximizes detection of malignancies during the sojourn time. • To screen detect a faster growing tumor (short tumor volume doubling time) before the malignancy becomes clinically evident, a shorter screening interval must be used.
