Abstract:We develop a scheme for quantum computation with neutral atoms, based on the concept of “marker” atoms, i.e., auxiliary atoms that can be efficiently transported in state-independent periodic external traps to operate quantum gates between physically distant qubits. This allows for relaxing a number of experimental constraints for quantum computation with neutral atoms in microscopic potential, including single-atom laser addressability. We discuss the advantages of this approach in a concrete physical scenario involving molecular interactions.

Abstract:Recently, neutral atoms have emerged as a promising platform for quantum computing, offering scalability. In this study, we showcase the realization of atomic qubits in atom-molecular Bose-Einstein condensate, belonging to three distinct classes. In the first case, the condensed molecules form a droplet platform with a flat-top configuration, facilitating effective isolation from both external environments and neighbouring molecules. The second atomic qubits have wavefunctions in the ``pulse" form, exhibiting power law behaviour, whereas the third one has ground and excited state wavefunctions in their respective composite forms, $\sech^2{\beta x}$ and $\sech{\beta x}\tanh{\beta x}$. The localization of the qubits depends on the chemical potential, which is governed by the photo association, providing effective control for qubit manipulation. The relevant parameters, such as energy level separation, healing length, and atom numbers, are found to be influenced by the non-linearity and strength of photo associations governing the behaviour of macroscopic qubits and molecular droplets.

Abstract:Suppressing errors is the central challenge for useful quantum computing, requiring quantum error correction for large-scale processing. However, the overhead in the realization of error-corrected ``logical'' qubits, where information is encoded across many physical qubits for redundancy, poses significant challenges to large-scale logical quantum computing. Here we report the realization of a programmable quantum processor based on encoded logical qubits operating with up to 280 physical qubits. Utilizing logical-level control and a zoned architecture in reconfigurable neutral atom arrays, our system combines high two-qubit gate fidelities, arbitrary connectivity, as well as fully programmable single-qubit rotations and mid-circuit readout. Operating this logical processor with various types of encodings, we demonstrate improvement of a two-qubit logic gate by scaling surface code distance from d=3 to d=7, preparation of color code qubits with break-even fidelities, fault-tolerant creation of logical GHZ states and feedforward entanglement teleportation, as well as operation of 40 color code qubits. Finally, using three-dimensional [[8,3,2]] code blocks, we realize computationally complex sampling circuits with up to 48 logical qubits entangled with hypercube connectivity with 228 logical two-qubit gates and 48 logical CCZ gates. We find that this logical encoding substantially improves algorithmic performance with error detection, outperforming physical qubit fidelities at both cross-entropy benchmarking and quantum simulations of fast scrambling. These results herald the advent of early error-corrected quantum computation and chart a path toward large-scale logical processors.

Abstract:We report on the fault-tolerant operation of logical qubits on a neutral atom quantum computer, with logical performance surpassing physical performance for multiple circuits including Bell states (12x error reduction), random circuits (15x), and a prototype Anderson Impurity Model ground state solver for materials science applications (up to 6x, non-fault-tolerantly). The logical qubits are implemented via the [[4, 2, 2]] code (C4). Our work constitutes the first complete realization of the benchmarking protocol proposed by Gottesman 2016 [1] demonstrating results consistent with fault-tolerance. In light of recent advances on applying concatenated C4/C6 detection codes to achieve error correction with high code rates and thresholds, our work can be regarded as a building block towards a practical scheme for fault tolerant quantum computation. Our demonstration of a materials science application with logical qubits particularly demonstrates the immediate value of these techniques on current experiments.

Abstract:Quantum computers must achieve large-scale, fault-tolerant operation to deliver on their promise of transformational processing power [1-4]. This will require thousands or millions of high-fidelity quantum gates and similar numbers of qubits [5]. Demonstrations using neutral-atom qubits trapped and manipulated by lasers have shown that this modality can provide high two-qubit gate (CZ) fidelities and scalable operation [6-10]. However, the gates in these demonstrations are driven by lasers that do not resolve individual qubits, with universal computation enabled by physical mid-circuit shuttling of the qubits. This relatively slow operation will greatly extend runtimes for useful, large-scale computation. Here we demonstrate a universal neutral-atom quantum computer with gate rates limited by optical switching times, rather than shuttling, by individually addressing tightly focused laser beams at an array of single atoms. We achieve CZ fidelity of 99.35(4)% and local single qubit RZ gate fidelity of 99.902(8)%. Moreover, we demonstrate non-destructive readout of alkali-atom qubits with sub-percent loss, which boosts operational speed. This technique also enables us to measure 99.73(3)% CZ fidelity with atom-loss events excluded, which is a record among long lived neutral-atom qubits and highlights the path to higher fidelity and error correction. Our results represent a critical step towards large-scale, fault-tolerant neutral-atom quantum computers that can execute computations on practical timescales.

An Abstract Model and Efficient Routing for Logical Entangling Gates on Zoned Neutral Atom Architectures

Abstract:Recent experimental achievements have demonstrated the potential of neutral atom architectures for fault-tolerant quantum computing. These architectures feature the dynamic rearrangement of atoms during computation, enabling nearly arbitrary two-dimensional rearrangements. Additionally, they employ a zoned layout with dedicated regions for entangling, storage, and readout. This architecture requires design automation software that efficiently compiles quantum circuits to this hardware and takes care that atoms are in the right place at the right time. In this paper, we initiate this line of work by providing, (1) an abstract model of the novel architecture and, (2) an efficient solution to the routing problem of entangling gates. By this, we aim to maximize the parallelism of entangling gates and minimize the overhead caused by the routing of atoms between zones. In addition to that, we keep the realm of fault-tolerant quantum computing in mind and consider logical qubit arrays, each of which encodes one logical qubit. We implemented the proposed idea as a tool called NALAC and demonstrated its effectiveness and efficiency by showing that it can significantly reduce the routing overhead of logical entangling gates compared to the naive approach. Abstract:Quantum networks providing shared entanglement over a mesh of quantum nodes will revolutionize the field of quantum information science by offering novel applications in quantum computation, enhanced precision in networks of sensors and clocks, and efficient quantum communication over large distances. Recent experimental progress with individual neutral atoms demonstrates a high potential for implementing the crucial components of such networks. We highlight latest developments and near-term prospects on how arrays of individually controlled neutral atoms are suited for both efficient remote entanglement generation and large-scale quantum information processing, thereby providing the necessary features for sharing high-fidelity and error-corrected multi-qubit entangled states between the nodes. We describe both the functionality requirements and several examples for advanced, large-scale quantum networks composed of neutral atom processing nodes.

Logical fermions for fault-tolerant quantum simulation

Abstract:We show how to absorb fermionic quantum simulation's expensive fermion-to-qubit mapping overhead into the overhead already incurred by surface-code-based fault-tolerant quantum computing. The key idea is to process information in surface-code twist defects, which behave like logical Majorana fermions. Our approach encodes Dirac fermions, a key data type for simulation applications, directly into logical Majorana fermions rather than atop a logical qubit layer in the architecture. Using quantum simulation of the $N$-fermion 2D Fermi-Hubbard model as an exemplar, we demonstrate two immediate algorithmic improvements. First, by preserving the model's locality at the logical level, we reduce the asymptotic Trotter-Suzuki quantum circuit depth from $\mathcal{O}(\sqrt{N})$ in a typical Jordan-Wigner encoding to $\mathcal{O}(1)$ in our encoding. Second, by exploiting optimizations manifest for logical fermions but less obvious for logical qubits, we reduce the $T$-count of the block-encoding \textsc{select} oracle by 20\% over standard implementations, even when realized by logical qubits and not logical fermions.

Abstract:We show how realistic cavity-assisted interaction between neutral atoms and coherent optical pulses, and measurement techniques, combined with optical transportation of atoms, allow for a universal set of quantum gates acting on decoherence--free subspace in a deterministic way. The logical qubits are immunized to the dominant source of decoherece-dephasing, while the influences of additional errors are shown by numerical simulations. We analyze the performance and stability of all required operations and emphasize that all techniques are feasible with current experimental technology.
Virtualized Logical Qubits: A 2.5D Architecture for Error-Corrected Quantum Computing

Abstract:Current, near-term quantum devices have shown great progress in recent years culminating with a demonstration of quantum supremacy. In the medium-term, however, quantum machines will need to transition to greater reliability through error correction, likely through promising techniques such as surface codes which are well suited for near-term devices with limited qubit connectivity. We discover quantum memory, particularly resonant cavities with transmon qubits arranged in a 2.5D architecture, can efficiently implement surface codes with substantial hardware savings and performance/fidelity gains. Specifically, we *virtualize logical qubits* by storing them in layers distributed across qubit memories connected to each transmon. Surprisingly, distributing each logical qubit across many memories has a minimal impact on fault tolerance and results in substantially more efficient operations. Our design permits fast transversal CNOT operations between logical qubits sharing the same physical address which are 6x faster than lattice surgery CNOTs. We develop a novel embedding which saves ~10x in transmons with another 2x from an additional optimization for compactness. Although Virtualized Logical Qubits (VLQ) pays a 10x penalty in serialization, advantages in the transversal CNOT and area efficiency result in performance comparable to 2D transmon-only architectures. Our simulations show fault tolerance comparable to 2D architectures while saving substantial hardware. Furthermore, VLQ can produce magic states 1.22x faster for a fixed number of transmon qubits. This is a critical benchmark for future fault-tolerant quantum computers. VLQ substantially reduces the hardware requirements for fault tolerance and puts within reach a proof-of-concept experimental demonstration of around 10 logical qubits, requiring only 11 transmons and 9 attached cavities in total.

Protecting logical qubits with dynamical decoupling

Abstract:Demonstrating that logical qubits outperform their physical counterparts is a milestone for achieving reliable quantum computation. Here, we propose to protect logical qubits with a novel dynamical decoupling scheme that implements iSWAP gates on nearest-neighbor physical qubits, and experimentally demonstrate the scheme on superconducting transmon qubits. In our scheme, each logical qubit only requires two physical qubits. A universal set of quantum gates on the logical qubits can be achieved such that each logical gate comprises only one or two physical gates. Our experiments reveal that the coherence time of a logical qubit is extended by up to 366% when compared to the better-performing physical qubit. Moreover, to the best of our knowledge, we demonstrate for the first time that multiple logical qubits outperform their physical counterparts in superconducting qubits. We illustrate a set of universal gates through a logical Ramsey experiment and the creation of a logical Bell state. Given its scalable nature, our scheme holds promise as a component for future reliable quantum computation.

Abstract:Aquila, an analog quantum simulation platform developed by QuEra Computing, supports control of the position and coherent evolution of up to 256 neutral atoms. This study details novel experimental protocols designed for analog quantum simulators that generate Bell state entanglement far away from the blockade regime, construct a $Z_2$ state with a defect induced by an ancilla, and optimize the driving fields schedule to prepare excited states with enhanced fidelity. We additionally evaluate the effectiveness of readout error mitigation techniques in improving the fidelity of measurement results. All experiments were executed on Aquila from QuEra and facilitated by the AWS Braket interface. Our experimental results closely align with theoretical predictions and numerical simulations. The insights gained from this study showcase Aquila's capabilities in handling complex quantum simulations and computations, and also pave the way for new avenues of research in quantum information processing and physics that employ programmable analog hardware platforms.

Optimal State Preparation for Logical Arrays on Zoned Neutral Atom Quantum Computers

Abstract:Quantum computing promises to solve problems previously deemed infeasible. However, high error rates necessitate quantum error correction for practical applications. Seminal experiments with zoned neutral atom architectures have shown remarkable potential for fault-tolerant quantum computing. To fully harness their potential, efficient software solutions are vital. A key aspect of quantum error correction is the initialization of physical qubits representing a logical qubit in a highly entangled state. This process, known as state preparation, is the foundation of most quantum error correction codes and, hence, a crucial step towards fault-tolerant quantum computing. Generating a schedule of target-specific instructions to perform the state preparation is highly complex. First software tools exist but are not suitable for the zoned neutral atom architectures. This work addresses this gap by leveraging the computational power of SMT solvers and generating minimal schedules for the state preparation of logical arrays. Experimental evaluations demonstrate that actively utilizing zones to shield idling qubits consistently results in higher fidelities than solutions disregarding these zones. Abstract:The ability to perform entangling quantum operations with low error rates in a scalable fashion is a central element of useful quantum information processing. Neutral atom arrays have recently emerged as a promising quantum computing platform, featuring coherent control over hundreds of qubits and any-to-any gate connectivity in a flexible, dynamically reconfigurable architecture. The major outstanding challenge has been to reduce errors in entangling operations mediated through Rydberg interactions. Here we report the realization of two-qubit entangling gates with 99.5% fidelity on up to 60 atoms in parallel, surpassing the surface code threshold for error correction. Our method employs fast single-pulse gates based on optimal control, atomic dark states to reduce scattering, and improvements to Rydberg excitation and atom cooling. We benchmark fidelity using several methods based on repeated gate applications, characterize the physical error sources, and outline future improvements. Finally, we generalize our method to design entangling gates involving a higher number of qubits, which we demonstrate by realizing low-error three-qubit gates. By enabling high-fidelity operation in a scalable, highly connected system, these advances lay the groundwork for large-scale implementation of quantum algorithms, error-corrected circuits, and digital simulations.

Abstract:We propose a new system for implementing quantum logic gates: neutral atoms trapped in a very far-off-resonance optical lattice. Pairs of atoms are made to occupy the same well by varying the polarization of the trapping lasers, and then a near-resonant electric dipole is induced by an auxiliary laser. A controlled-NOT can be implemented by conditioning the target atomic resonance on a resolvable level shift induced by the control atom. Atoms interact only during logical operations, thereby suppressing decoherence.

Abstract:Simulating the properties of many-body fermionic systems is an outstanding computational challenge relevant to material science, quantum chemistry, and particle physics. Although qubit-based quantum computers can potentially tackle this problem more efficiently than classical devices, encoding non-local fermionic statistics introduces an overhead in the required resources, limiting their applicability on near-term architectures. In this work, we present a fermionic quantum processor, where fermionic models are locally encoded in a fermionic register and simulated in a hardware-efficient manner using fermionic gates. We consider in particular fermionic atoms in programmable tweezer arrays and develop different protocols to implement non-local tunneling gates, guaranteeing Fermi statistics at the hardware level. We use this gate set, together with Rydberg-mediated interaction gates, to find efficient circuit decompositions for digital and variational quantum simulation algorithms, illustrated here for molecular energy estimation. Finally, we consider a combined fermion-qubit architecture, where both the motional and internal degrees of freedom of the atoms are harnessed to efficiently implement quantum phase estimation, as well as to simulate lattice gauge theory dynamics.

Quantum Computing and Quantum Simulation with Group-II Atoms

Abstract:Recent experimental progress in controlling neutral group-II atoms for optical clocks, and in the production of degenerate gases with group-II atoms has given rise to novel opportunities to address challenges in quantum computing and quantum simulation. In these systems, it is possible to encode qubits in nuclear spin states, which are decoupled from the electronic state in the $^1$S$_0$ ground state and the long-lived $^3$P$_0$ metastable state on the clock transition. This leads to quantum computing scenarios where qubits are stored in long lived nuclear spin states, while electronic states can be accessed independently, for cooling of the atoms, as well as manipulation and readout of the qubits. The high nuclear spin in some fermionic isotopes also offers opportunities for the encoding of multiple qubits on a single atom, as well as providing an opportunity for studying many-body physics in systems with a high spin symmetry. Here we review recent experimental and theoretical progress in these areas, and summarise the advantages and challenges for quantum computing and quantum simulation with group-II atoms.

Abstract:Connectivity of two-qubit logic gates plays a crucial and indispensable role in quantum computation research. For the cold atom qubit platform, while the two-qubit Rydberg blockade gate has recently made rapid experimental progress, a pressing challenge is to improve connectivity in pursuit of genuine scalability without sacrificing speed or fidelity. A significant advancement in this direction can be achieved by introducing an extra buffer atom to extend the two-qubit gate beyond purely nearest-neighbor two-body interactions. The buffer atom couples with the two qubit atoms through nearest-neighbor interactions, even though the qubit atoms do not directly exert any physical influence on each other. The established method of off-resonant modulated driving (ORMD) is not only convenient but also lays the groundwork for this latest development. Although the atomic linkage structure here exhibits more complex interactions compared to previous two-body systems, the population can satisfactorily return to the ground state after the ground-Rydberg transition with a properly designed modulation waveform. This can be achieved through one-photon and two-photon ground-Rydberg transitions in common practices. Furthermore, with buffer atom relay or similar structures, it is possible to realize a two-qubit entangling gate between two distant qubit atoms. In addition to demonstrating that such solutions are feasible, the representative modulation patterns are analyzed, showcasing the versatility of buffer-atom-mediated two-qubit gates. An Architecture for Improved Surface Code Connectivity in Neutral Atoms

Abstract:In order to achieve error rates necessary for advantageous quantum algorithms, Quantum Error Correction (QEC) will need to be employed, improving logical qubit fidelity beyond what can be achieved physically. As today's devices begin to scale, co-designing architectures for QEC with the underlying hardware will be necessary to reduce the daunting overheads and accelerate the realization of practical quantum computing. In this work, we focus on logical computation in QEC. We address quantum computers made from neutral atom arrays to design a surface code architecture that translates the hardware's higher physical connectivity into a higher logical connectivity. We propose groups of interleaved logical qubits, gaining all-to-all connectivity within the group via efficient transversal CNOT gates. Compared to standard lattice surgery operations, this reduces both the overall qubit footprint and execution time, lowering the spacetime overhead needed for small-scale QEC circuits. We also explore the architecture's scalability. We look at using physical atom movement schemes and propose interleaved lattice surgery which allows an all-to-all connectivity between qubits in adjacent interleaved groups, creating a higher connectivity routing space for large-scale circuits. Using numerical simulations, we evaluate the total routing time of interleaved lattice surgery and atom movement for various circuit sizes. We identify a cross-over point defining intermediate-scale circuits where atom movement is best and large-scale circuits where interleaved lattice surgery is best. We use this to motivate a hybrid approach as devices continue to scale, with the choice of operation depending on the routing distance.
