Abstract:Triphenylmethane dyes are widely used in textile dyeing,medicine,biological staining,paper,leather,food and cosmetic industries. Their special stable chemical structures make them difficult to be degradated and decolorized. The biodecolorization research of triphenylmethane dyes will provide the fundamental knowledge for the treatment of dye-containing wastewater and bioremediation of dye-contaminated environment. In this paper,the recent research progress in biodegradation and decolorization of triphenylmethane dyes by microorganisms,such as bacteria,actinomycetes,fungi and alga,as well as the functioning enzymes and their coding genes,were reviewed. The decolorization mechanisms and degradation pathways of triphenylmethane dyes were discussed based on the decolorizing intermediate products of different microbes. The development and application of triphenylmethane dyes biodecolorization and biodegradationwere also prospected.

Abstract:Developing mild decolorization technology is critical for accomplishing clean pulping to overcome issues of the severe degradation of cellulose during the preparation of cotton pulp from waste cotton textiles and the high energy consumed in this preparation. The sodium hydroxide (NaOH)-sodium dithionite (Na2S2O4) system is widely used for decolorizing cotton fabrics. However, previous reports have only studied decolorizing cotton fabrics using this hybrid system and did not clarify the decolorization mechanism of NaOH and Na2S2O4 on fabric dyed with different types of reactive dyes. Therefore, in this work, according to the chromophore groups and active groups of the reactive dyes, the decolorization of cotton fibers dyed with azo monochlorotriazine reactive dyes, anthraquinone vinyl sulfone reactive dyes and diazobismonochlorotriazine reactive dyes was studied. The decolorization mechanism of NaOH and Na2S2O4 on cotton fabrics dyed with different types of reactive dyes was clarified by employing NaOH and Na2S2O4 separately and in combination. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffractometer and extension testing were used to explore the effects of decolorization on the chemical structure, crystalline structure, and physical and mechanical properties of cotton fabrics. This work provides a theoretical basis for the decolorization of cotton fabrics dyed using different reactive dyes.Graphic abstract

The Investigation of the Treatment of Dyeing Wastewater by Galvanic Corrosion-Reduction Degradation-Coagulation Absorption

Abstract:A new method for treating dyeing waste water with iron filings, flue gas or gas ashes as treating agent is introduced. The treatment mechanism is discussed and the proper treating conditions and technological procedures are suggested. The experimental results show that when the ratio of treating agent is 4:6, pH values of iron filings filtering and coagulation absorption are controlled at 4～5 and 8～9 respectively, treating time is 20～30min, the rate of dislodgement and decolouring after treating can reach over 90%; all the values of COD are less than 100mg/L; the waste water becomes clear and transparent; and all the quality indexes of water conform with the national dischange standards.
Preparation of recycled dissolving pulp from waste dark-color dyed cotton-polyester denim fabrics with sulphur dyes

Abstract:It is very important and challenging to efficiently and eco-friendly recycle the waste cotton textiles, especially for the dyed cotton-polyester blended textiles due to their complex dye composition and recovery of cotton components from them. Here, we proposed a recycling route for waste dark-colored cotton-polyester denim fabrics containing sulphur dyes, involving decolorization, alkali cooking for pulp and bleaching. Thiourea dioxide (TDO) was utilized as a reducing agent to remove the sulphur dyes of the fabrics in NaOH solution system, and the effects of TDO dosage, temperature and time on decoloring efficiency were discussed. Alkali cooking with hydrogen peroxide was used to prepare cellulose pulp and remove polyester fiber components simultaneously. Then the prepared pulp was bleached through the hydrogen peroxide/tetraacetylethylenediamine to further improve its whiteness. The dissolving pulp obtained from the dark-blue and black denim fabrics had the CIE whiteness indices of 89 and 65, and the degrees of polymerization of 522 and 565, respectively. This study provided a new approach for the recycling and reuse of waste cotton textiles.

Efficient decolorization of reactive dyed cotton fabric with a two-step NaOH/Na2S2O4 process

Abstract:Waste cotton textiles can be decolorized with the NaOH/Na 2 S 2 O 4 reducing system with mild and effective results. Nevertheless, this system consumes substantial amounts of Na 2 S 2 O 4 , resulting in the decomposition of Na 2 S 2 O 4 (insurance powder) into H 2 S and SO 2 , which is ineffective decomposition. The present study proposed a two-step NaOH/Na 2 S 2 O 4 method to decolorize the reactive-dyed cotton fabric was proposed to improve the decolorization efficiency of insurance powder. The decolorization mechanism of NaOH and Na 2 S 2 O 4 was investigated based on the decolorization kinetics. The results showed that Na 2 S 2 O 4 decolorized the dyed cotton fabric more quickly than NaOH. In the reduction system, the decolorization mechanism of NaOH and Na 2 S 2 O 4 individually followed a three-order kinetic law. During the decolorization process, a hydrolysis reaction between NaOH and cotton fiber destroyed the covalent bond between the dye and the fiber, which was an ether bond, and a reduction reaction between Na 2 S 2 O 4 and the dye destroyed the chromophore. The two-step NaOH/Na 2 S 2 O 4 method improved the decolorization of dyed cotton fabric by reducing the ineffective decomposition of Na 2 S 2 O 4 . Compared to traditional methods, the two-step method endowed the decolorized fabric with a 16% higher CIE L value. Notably, the decolorized cotton fabric retained about 90% of its breaking strength.

Abstract:Experimental research for wastewater processing has been carried out on the activated dye wastewater from cotton-printing and dyeing by using a chemical coagulation method with MgSO4 as coagulation agent and anion polyacrylamide as coagulant aid. It shows that the pH is of the substantial effect on decolorization. When the pH is greater than 12.0,decolorization rate approaches stable. Decolorization and COD removal rate all increase with the increase of MgSO4 addition. The floc settling time becomes shorter by adding a little anion polyacrylamide. It has been confirmed that the decolorization rate is above 90%,COD removal rate is greater than 80%. Clearly, the combined processing method is suitable for the activated dye wastewater treatment.

Abstract:In order to recycle water and inorganic salts, sodium persulphate (SPS) was used to degrade the C.I. Reactive Red 195 (RR195) dyeing wastewater. The thermodynamic and kinetic relationships of RR195 dyeing in cleaner and conventional dyeing processes were analyzed and compared. The feasibility of the one-bath cyclic dyeing in the recycled dyeing wastewater was confirmed through the properties of dye utilization, color parameters and energy conservation. The appropriate conditions were 0.3 g/L of SPS and treatment at 95 °C for 30 min, which resulted in a decolorization rate of 99.7% for the dyeing wastewater, mainly due to the action of radical sulfate. When cotton fabric was dyed with the cleaner dyeing, the kinetic was pseudo-second-order and the thermodynamic was Freundlich adsorption. There was a 47.5% reduction in half dyeing time, a greater diffusion coefficient and standard affinity, and lower entropy and enthalpy values when dyeing in reused wastewater. Cotton fabrics were dyed with the proposed cleaner dyeing process, which reduced the amount of water and inorganic salt by 95.8% and 89.8%, respectively. The total organic carbon (TOC), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD 5 ) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) were 53.6%, 69.8% and 42.6% lower than the conventional dyeing process, respectively. The recommended technology not only reduces the amount of dyeing wastewater but also enables the recycling of inorganic salts and water, which makes great progress in the textile industry.

Abstract:The treatment of textile wastewater containing harmful metal ions poses a significant challenge in industrial applications due to its environmental impact. In this study, the use of sulfite for treating simulated dye wastewater containing New Coccine (NC) and Cr(VI) was investigated. The removal of NC was influenced by the redox reaction between Cr(VI) and sulfite, demonstrating a strong self-boosting effect of Cr(VI) on NC removal. Remarkable NC decoloration (95%) and Cr(VI) reduction (90%) were achieved within 1 min, highlighting the effectiveness of the treatment. Quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) technology confirmed that singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) was the main oxidative agent for organic dye removal and SO 4 •− , •OH and Cr(V) were also identified as key contributors to NC degradation. The Cr(VI)/sulfite system exhibited higher efficiency in degrading azo dyes, such as NC and Congo Red (CR), compared to non-azo dyes like Methylene Blue (MB). This superiority may be attributed to the action of Cr(V) on azo groups. Additionally, the COD removal experiments were conducted on the actual dye wastewater, showing the excellent performance of the Cr(VI)/Sulfite system in treating industrial textile wastewater. This approach presents a promising strategy for effective "waste control by waste", offering great potential for addressing challenges related to dye wastewater treatment and environmental pollution control in practical industrial scenarios.

Abstract:As the most common synthetic fiber, polyester has consistently been in high demand and usage, but its recycling has always been a problem for the textile industry. The decolorization of dyed polyester is the key to expanding recycling use, and there is no rapid, effective, and simple decolorization method. In this study, ozone was used to decolorize dispersed dyes developed for polyester. Ozone was effective in decolorizing C.I. Disperse Orange 30, and C.I. Disperse Blue 60, and the process was extended to the decolorization of dyed polyester fabric. Based on the single factor analysis, the optimum decolorization technological conditions were as follows: ozone feed rate of 130 mg L‐1 min‐1, treatment time of 2 h, wet pick‐up of 100%, and pH value of 3, where the decolorization rate and DE values could reach over 45 % and 6, respectively. The changes in dye structure during the process of ozone decolorization were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy, X‐ray diffraction, and Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy, and the mechanism of ozone decolorization was further analyzed. The results showed that the crystallinity decreased from 41.18% to 36.30% with a strength retention rate of above 80%, and ozone can be used on polyester fabric and dye simultaneously. The aim of entering the fiber was achieved by etching the polyester and decolorization was achieved by oxidizing the chromaticity groups.

Abstract:Abstract The rapid expansion of the fast fashion industry brings about environmental concerns such as dyestuffs-related water pollutions and waste textiles. Conventional wastewater-disposal strategies emphasize the optimization of photocatalytic activity to improve pollutant degradation efficiency, while the absorptivity, recyclability and sustainability of photocatalysts are always ignored. The overproduced textiles are still in urgent of being recycled and reutilized in eco-friendly approaches. In this work, a scalable dyeing technology is employed to achieve green and sustainable reutilization of waste textiles. The functionalized TiO 2 /reduced graphene oxide wool fabrics show excellent sustainability, remarkable adsorbing capacity and enhanced photocatalytic performance. By taking advantage of these properties, we develop an integrated strategy of night-time adsorption and day-time photodegradation which could significantly optimize the dyestuffs degradation efficiency. The concept of waste textiles reutilization and wastewater treatment in this work provides practical potential for efficient and sustainable environmental remediation. Abstract:For the first time, this study presents solar photocatalytic processing of the real dye wastes remaining after finishing polyester/cotton (P/C) blends, rather than a pure organic dye solution as widely reported. A commonly used microencapsulation-based one-bath dyeing is investigated systematically, in order to simulate the real dyeing environment and to generate real dye wastes. The generated dye wastes are subsequently tackled by facile cotton fabric-based photocatalytic degradation involving a visible light-active TiO2 photocatalyst under solar light. Importantly, such a TiO2 photocatalyst is prepared without any calcination, doping, or coupling with plasmonic metal nanoparticles or narrow-band-gap semiconductors. As a result, the present visible light-responsive cotton fabric-based photocatalytic degradation of the simulated real dye wastes is expected to stimulate various industries for achieving simultaneous effective dyeing and processing of the dye wastes remained. This study also contributes to energy saving and environmental protection.

Abstract:The predominant methods of cellulose waste disposal, potentially amounting to an annual volume of up to three million tons, encompass incineration and burial. Unfortunately, these practices not only induce substantial environmental degradation but also dissipate considerable quantities of recyclable cellulose material. Within the context of this investigation, we employ a chemical approach to explore the recycling of discarded cellulose denim fabric. A combination of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and sodium hyposulfite (Na 2 S 2 O 4 ) solutions is harnessed to effectuate the separation of dye from the cellulose waste. Remarkably, after a mere 20 min treatment, the separation efficiency for indigo exceeds an impressive 87.33%, while the tensile strength diminishment of the waste cellulose denim fabric stands around 10 ~ 20%. This outcome not only show the viability of cellulose waste recyclization but also corroborates that recycled indigo can be utilized for re-dyeing cellulose denim fabric. Based on the UV–Vis analysis, the indigo concentration in the dye separation solution registers at 0.36 g/L, with a notable dye recovery rate of 75.91%. Furthermore, the K/S value (ratio of absorption to scattering of light) for yarn dyed with the indigo separation solution attains 1.76, closely approximating the properties exhibited by yarn dyed with standard indigo.

Abstract:Reactive dyeing of wool fabrics in non-aqueous green solvents was investigated with the aim to cut effluent discharge via dyebath reuse. Hydrolysis of reactive dyes is the major obstacle for recycle and reuse of the spent dye bath. In the current work, 10 non-nucleophilic solvents were screened based on their Environmental, health, and safety (EHS) profile to be used as the dyeing media. Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and dimethyl carbonate were chosen for their favorable EHS score. ATR-IR, SEM and XRD analysis had revealed DMSO pretreatment induced appreciable morphological and structural changes wool fabrics, leading to enhanced dyeability. DMC was used in combination with DMSO to facilitate dye adsorption as a poor solvent for the dyes. The effect of dyeing temperatures, dyeing time, and DMC content on final depth of shade was investigated. Covalent fixation and ionic fixation were determined for the solvent-dyed wool fabric using a pyridine-stripping procedure and compared to that of an aqueously-dyed control. The results showed that about 30% higher covalent fixation was achieved in non-aqueous system, which leads to higher depth of shade (ΔK/S = 1.3-4.9), enhanced color build up properties and better colorfastness (0.5-1 grade). A multi-cycle repeated dyeing sequence involving the recovered solvents and dyes was demonstrated to give consistently high shade buildup and colorfastness. The recyclable dyeing procedure developed in the current study provides an alternative to effluent treatment in reduction of pollutant discharge for a more sustainable textile industry.
Decolorization and biodegradability of photocatalytic treated azo dyes and wool textile wastewater

Abstract:The photodegradation and biodegradability have been investigated for four non-biodegradable commercial azo dyes, Reactive YellowKD-3G, Reactive Red 15, Reactive Red 24, Cationic Blue X-GRL, an indicator. Methyl Orange, and one industrial wool textile wastewater, using TiO2 suspensions irradiated with a medium pressure mercury lamp. The color removal of dyes solution and dyeing wastewater reached to above 90% within 20-30 min. of photocatalytic treatment. Biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) was found to increase, while chemical oxygen demand (COD), total organic carbon (TOC) decreased, so that the ratio of BOD5/COD of the wastewater increased from original zero up to 0.75. The result implies that photocatalytic oxidation enhanced the biodegradability of the dye-containing wastewater and therefore relationship between decolorization and biodegradability exists. When the color disappeared completely, the wastewater biodegraded normally and could be discharged for further treatment. The experimental results demonstrate that it is possible to combine photocatalysis with conventional biological treatment for the remedy of wastewater containing generally non-biodegradable azo dyes.
Investigation into the removal of pigment, sulphur and vat colourants from cotton textiles and implications for waste cellulosic recycling

Abstract:Cotton can be coloured by dyeing and printing using either dye or pigment colourants. Pigments are insoluble in water but can be dispersed in a polymer print binder and heat-fixed to the fabric. Vat and sulphur dyes similarly have low solubility in water but through alkali/reduction can be solubilised and exhausted onto the cotton fibre. Following their reoxidation, the dyes are insolubilised in the fibre and, like pigment prints, in general exhibit good wash fastness. In this study, sequential acid/alkali/peroxide or acid/dithionite/peroxide treatments were investigated as a means of removing pigment/polymer prints and common sulphur and vat dyes from coloured cotton fabric. Using the sequential acid/dithionite/peroxide treatment, up to 97% of both sulphur and vat colourants could be “stripped” from dyed cotton producing a white cellulosic feedstock material that could be used for “new” fibre regeneration. By contrast, the “stripping” of the pigment/polymer binder colourant system was less predictable and less complete and is probably a reflection of the different chemical natures of the polymer binder and pigments. This contrasting behaviour highlights the range of chemistries applied to cotton and that developing a universal single treatment to strip out all finishes may be problematic.

Hydrolysis-free and Fully Recyclable Reactive Dyeing of Cotton in Green, Non-Nucleophilic Solvents for a Sustainable Textile Industry

Abstract:A preventive approach to reduce the environmental burden associated with textile processing was demonstrated by creating a fully recyclable reactive dyeing process for cotton. Reactive dyeing is the most commonly used coloration method for cotton, yet it generates the most problematic effluents that are not only difficult to treat but also non-reusable. Dye hydrolysis, the major barrier to reusing spent reactive dye baths was eliminated in the current study by replacing water with non-nucleophilic green solvents as the processing media. Dye sorption and dye fixation as affected by solvent composition and type of bases were investigated. Compared with conventional aqueous dyeing, the solvent-based process required up to 40% less dye, 97.5% less base, and no inorganic salts. Recycling of all spent baths throughout the process was demonstrated with a 10-cycle repeated dyeing sequence, which displayed consistently high shade build-up and colorfastness. Based on the 10-cycle sequence, the reduction in waste disposal was estimated to be over 99% for both organics and salts. Five different monochlorotriazine dyes featuring different chromophores were successfully applied to cotton using the solvent-based dyeing method. The favorable results implied that discharge-free reactive dyeing could be possible. The solvent dyeing process has significant potential for requiring no modifications of dyes or fabrics and no pressurization. By implementing the principles of reducing waste, reusing, and recycling resources (3Rs), the solvent-based process developed in this study could be a solid step towards sustainable textile processing.

Abstract:The processes,such as electrolysis,electrolysis-hydrolytic acidification,hydrolytic acidification-aerobic,decoloration flocculation-hydrolytic acidification-aerobic,have been used for treating the cotton pulp stock solution wastewater from Jigao Chemical Fibre Co.,Ltd.,whose COD is as high as 4 484 mg/L,and chroma 1 250 times.The effluent,whose COD is 611.2 mg/L and chroma 500 times,of the Wastewater Treatment Plant of the Company has been treated by MD-02 decoloring agent and sodium hypochlorite respectively.The experimental results show that electrolysis process can reduce the chroma of wastewater substantially and its removal rate reaches 60%-72%.Electrolysis-hydrolysis process has remarkable chroma removal effect.The chroma removal rate of the conventional hydrolysis-aerobic combined process is only 23.2%,indicating the limitation of chroma removal effect of conventional bio-chemical treatment on cotton pulp wastewater.The removal rates of COD and chroma of cotton pulp stock solution wastewater by decoloration flocculation-hydrolysis-aerobic combined process are very remarkable,being a comparatively ideal pretreatment process.
Clean dyeing of cotton fabrics by cross-linking reactive dyes with fiber macromolecular chains

Abstract:Increasing dye utilization, shortening the process and reducing the discharge of colored wastewater are the keys to clean dyeing and finishing of fabrics. In this study, we report a clean dyeing process. The process improved the dye utilization and achieved wrinkle-finishing and dyeing in the same bath by enhancing cross-linking of dyes with fiber macromolecular chains. It was observed by SEM that the cross-section of the dyed fibers showed round or oval shape, and the mid-cavities were reduced or even disappeared. The swelling rate of the fibers and cellulase degradation experiments showed that the dyes formed stable cross-linking structures with the macromolecular chains. Furthermore, differences in the structure of reactive dyes affected the optimal reaction conditions between the dyes and the fibers. Compared to conventional processes, the K/S , color fixation rate, and wrinkle recovery angle of dyed fabrics with different dyes were significantly improved. This illustrated the superiority of this process and the applicability of different structural dyes. Compared to traditional processes, the process saved 29.6 % of dyes and 16.7 % of alkalis. Importantly, the process could save 200 % of water, 9.5 kW h of energy consumption and 61.6 m 3 of saturated steam. Ultimately, this process could save 7.22 $ of the cost of dyeing 1 kg of fabric. The concentration of dyes in the dyeing wastewater was significantly reduced. In summary, the clean process has good economic and environmental benefits.

Abstract:Industrial enterprises produce a large number of dye wastewater every year.Traditional water treatment method is difficult to achieve the effective treatment of dye wastewater The sewage excess sludge was considered as catalyst raw material in this experiment, it was carbonized and supported iron to catalyze persulfate and ozone. The technology was used to treat the dye wastewater, the influencing factors and mechanism of the reaction were studied, the results showed that when the dosage of the persulfate was 2 g, the mass fraction of iron was 1 %, the dosage of the sludge carbon supported iron was 0.5 g, the dye of orange II removal rate reached 95 % at 4 min. With the increase of the pH of dye wastewater, the removal effect of orange II was getting better. The introduction of ozone further improved the treatment effect, and the removal efficiency reached 97 % at 2 min. The absorbent, the persulfate, ozone react by radical oxidation, and persulfate reacted ozone each other, the dye wastewater decolored by these four ways. The technology not only treated the dye wastewater, but also realized the resource utilization of the excess sludge.
