Abstract:In this study, Cu–Fe bimetallic oxygen carriers (OCs) were prepared by the impregnation method based on SiO2, Al2O3, or hematite supports and the characteristics of manufactured OCs were investigated in a fluidized-bed reactor. The X-ray diffraction studies showed that Cu in OCs existed in the form of CuFe2O4. During cyclic operations, using CO gas as a fuel, Cu–Fe OCs with hematite (CuFe–He) or Al2O3 (CuFe–Al) as a support performed better and the reactivity of the CuFe–He OC increased with the cyclic reaction number, but deactivation occurred when SiO2 was used as a support (CuFe–Si). For the CuFe–Si OC, energy-dispersive spectrometer analysis results showed that both Cu and Fe distributed uniformly, and no obvious sintering was observed on the surface of OC particles from the scanning electron microscopy results. This deactivation was due to the irreversible interaction between the iron-based OC and SiO2. The CuFe–He OC was better than the CuFe–Al OC in accelerating fuel conversion due to its high oxygen capacity during chemical looping combustion of coal. Therefore, hematite was an excellent support candidate for manufacturing Cu–Fe OCs based on the impregnation method. The ratio of oxygen in OC to C in coal (O/C) had a significant impact on the coal conversion rate, and the O/C value should be above 7 for obtaining the desired coal conversion efficiency. Besides, increasing the reaction temperature promoted coal conversion effectively in chemical looping combustion of coal, especially with the CuFe–He OC, and a reaction temperature of above 850 °C was better. This article has not yet been cited by other publications.
