Abstract:We prove a kind of reflection principle for certain non-archimedean $L$-series in positive characteristic. We also prove the pseudo-cyclicity and pseudo-nullity of certain several variable generalizations of the class modules introduced by L. Taelman in 2010.

Abstract:We introduce an $L$-series associated to real-analytic modular forms which transform with weight $(r,s)\in\mathbb{Z}^2$ under $\Gamma_0(N)$. These $L$-series satisfy a functional equation and converse theorem. We also discuss examples of such forms, including real analytic Eisenstein series and modular iterated integrals of higher level. We focus on the $L$-series for a class of forms including Francis Brown's length-one modular iterated integrals $\mathcal{MI}^!_1$.

Abstract:We introduce the $L$-series of weakly holomorphic modular forms using Laplace transforms and give their functional equations. We then determine converse theorems for vector-valued harmonic weak Maass forms, Jacobi forms, and elliptic modular forms of half-integer weight in Kohnen plus space.

Abstract: Dirichlet's $L$-functions are natural extensions of the Riemann zeta function. In this paper we first give a brief survey of Ap\'ery-like series for some special values of the zeta function and certain $L$-functions. Then, we establish two theorems on transformations of certain kinds of congruences. Motivated by the results and based on our computation, we pose 48 new conjectural series (most of which involve harmonic numbers) for such special values and related constants. Dirichlet series associated to representation numbers of ideals in real quadratic number fields

Abstract:In this rather computational paper, we determine certain representation numbers of ideals in real quadratic number fields explicitly in order to obtain a representation of the associated Dirichlet series in terms of Dirichlet L-functions and a generalized divisor sum. A direct and important consequence is that the Dirichlet series has a meromorphic continuation to the whole complex plane and a simple pole at $s=2$ whose residue can be made explicit in terms of the Dirichlet L-functions and the generalized divisor sum.

A geometric approach to functional equations for general multiple Dirichlet series over function fields

Abstract:Sawin recently gave an axiomatic characterization of multiple Dirichlet series over the function field $\mathbb{F}_{q}(T)$ and proved their existence by exhibiting the coefficients as trace functions of specific perverse sheaves. However, he did not prove that these series actually converge anywhere, instead treating them as formal power series. In this paper, we prove that these series do converge in a certain region, and moreover that the functions obtained by analytically continuing them satisfy functional equations. For convergence, it suffices to obtain bounds on the coefficients, for which we use the decomposition theorem for perverse sheaves, in combination with the Kontsevich moduli space of stable maps to construct a suitable compactification. For the functional equations, the key identity is a multi-variable generalization of the relationship between a Dirichlet character and its Fourier transform; in the multiple Dirichlet series setting, this uses a density trick for simple perverse sheaves and an explicit formula for intermediate extensions from the complement of a normal crossings divisor.

On the central value of Rankin $L$-functions for self-dual algebraic representations of linear groups over totally real fields

Abstract:Deligne has formulated extremely influential conjectures about certain special values of the $L$-functions of (Grothendieck) motives over a number field $F$. Given the conjectural dictionary between motives and 'algebraic' automorphic representations of $\textrm{GL}(N, {\mathbb A}_F)$, where ${\mathbb A}_F$ denotes the adèles of $F$, they translate into conjectures concerning the $L$-functions of these automorphic representations. These complex representations, when they are 'regular', can be conjugated by the automorphisms of the complex field ${\mathbb C}$. It then follows, as a weak consequence of Deligne's conjectures, that the vanishing at critical points (integers of half-integers) of the automorphic $L$-functions should be invariant by automorphisms of ${\mathbb C}$. If $F$ is totally imaginary, this has been proven by Moeglin, for standard or Rankin $L$-functions. Here we extend the result to Rankin $L$-fuctions for totally real fields $F$, under a parity and a regularity assumption. The proof relies on Eisenstein cohomology and the Zucker conjecture (a theorem of Looijenga and Saper-Stern.)

Abstract:Let $L(s,\pi)=\sum_{n=1}^{\infty}\lambda_{\pi}(n)n^{-s}$ be an $L$-function that satisfies a weak form of the generalized Ramanujan conjecture. We prove that large partial sums of $\lambda_{\pi}(n)$ strongly repel the low-lying zeros of $L(s,\pi)$ away from the critical line. Our results extend and quantitatively improve preceding work of Granville and Soundararajan.

General multiple Dirichlet series from perverse sheaves

Abstract:We give an axiomatic characterization of multiple Dirichlet series over the function field $\mathbb F_q(T)$, generalizing a set of axioms given by Diaconu and Pasol. The key axiom, relating the coefficients at prime powers to sums of the coefficients, formalizes an observation of Chinta. The existence of multiple Dirichlet series satisfying these axioms is proved by exhibiting the coefficients as trace functions of explicit perverse sheaves and using properties of perverse sheaves. The multiple Dirichlet series defined this way include, as special cases, many that have appeared previously in the literature.

Abstract:Recently, Dixit et al. [24] established a very elegant generalization of Hardy's theorem concerning the infinitude of zeros that the Riemann zeta function possesses at its critical line. By introducing a general transformation formula for the theta function involving the Bessel and modified Bessel functions of the first kind, we extend their result to a class of Dirichlet series satisfying Hecke's functional equation. In the process, we also find new generalizations of classical identities in Analytic number theory.

Abstract:In recent years L-functions and their analytic properties have assumed a central role in number theory and automorphic forms. In this expository article, we describe the two major methods for proving the analytic continuation and functional equations of $L$-functions: the method of integral representations, and the method of Fourier expansions of Eisenstein series. Special attention is paid to technical properties, such as boundedness in vertical strips; these are essential in applying the converse theorem, a powerful tool that uses analytic properties of L-functions to establish cases of Langlands functoriality conjectures. We conclude by describing striking recent results which rest upon the analytic properties of L-functions.

Abstract:The past decade has witnessed two important new developments in the study of linear series on algebraic varieties. First, vector bundles have emerged as powerful tools for analyzing linear series on curves and surfaces. More recently, the viewpoints and techniques of higher dimensional geometry have started to play a central role. The purpose of these lectures is to provide a down-to-earth introduction to some of these new ideas and methods. The present notes, written with the assistance of G. Fernandez del Busto, are a considerably expanded version of a course given at the 1993 Regional Geometry Institute on Higher Dimensional Complex Geometry at Park City, Utah. While I hope they may be of interest to any geometers wishing to learn about recent work on linear series, I have particularly attempted to aim the discusion at a novice audience. My hope is that with a little faith and effort, these notes should be accessible to anyone having finished the standard introductory texts in algebraic geometry. The underlying theme of the lectures is the search for higher dimensional generalizations of the most basic facts about linear series on curves. But in an attempt to keep things elementary we work more or less exclusively on surfaces. Thus we end up discussing one central result -- viz. Reider's theorem -- from many points of view. Sticking to the case of surfaces allows one to eliminate many technical complexities, and I hope that parts of these lectures might therefore serve as a useful first introduction to the powerful cohomological techniques (involving $Q$-divisors) of contemporary

Abstract: Motivated by the recent work of Kachru-Vafa in string theory, we study in Part A of this paper, certain identities involving modular forms, hypergeometric series, and more generally series solutions to Fuchsian equations. The identity which arises in string theory is the simpliest of its kind. There are nontrivial generalizations of the identity which appear new. We give many such examples -- all of which arise in mirror symmetry for algebraic K3 surfaces. In Part B, we study the integrality property of certain $q$-series, known as mirror maps, which arise in mirror symmetry.
On $p$-adic $L$-functions for symplectic representations of GL(N) over number fields

Abstract:Let $F$ be a number field, and $\pi$ a regular algebraic cuspidal automorphic representation of $\mathrm{GL}_N(\mathbb{A}_F)$ of symplectic type. When $\pi$ is spherical at all primes $\mathfrak{p}|p$, we construct a $p$-adic $L$-function attached to any regular non-critical spin $p$-refinement $\tilde\pi$ of $\pi$ to $Q$-parahoric level, where $Q$ is the $(n,n)$-parabolic. More precisely, we construct a distribution $L_p(\tilde\pi)$ on the Galois group $\mathrm{Gal}_p$ of the maximal abelian extension of $F$ unramified outside $p\infty$, and show that it interpolates all the standard critical $L$-values of $\pi$ at $p$ (including, for example, cyclotomic and anticyclotomic variation when $F$ is imaginary quadratic). We show that $L_p(\tilde\pi)$ satisfies a natural growth condition; in particular, when $\tilde\pi$ is ordinary, $L_p(\tilde\pi)$ is a (bounded) measure on $\mathrm{Gal}_p$. As a corollary, when $\pi$ is unitary, has very regular weight, and is $Q$-ordinary at all $\mathfrak{p}|p$, we deduce non-vanishing $L(\pi\times(\chi\circ N_{F/\mathbb{Q}}),1/2) \neq 0$ of the twisted central value for all but finitely many Dirichlet characters $\chi$ of $p$-power conductor.

Abstract:Using the relations between rational functions and Eisenstein series, as well as the inferences for cotangent sums and period polynomials, we work out a precise description for Eisenstein series whose $L$-series vanish at certain critical values. This is possible for small weights compared to the level of the Eisenstein series. For large weights we give a partial result and determine subspaces with simultaneous vanishing properties.

Abstract:As an application of P. Delgine's theorem (Esnault and Kerz in Acta Math. Vietnam. 37:531-562, 2012) on a finiteness of $l$-adic sheaves on a variety over a finite field, we show the finiteness of étale coverings of such a variety with given degree whose ramification bounded along an effective Cartier divisor. This can be thought of a higher dimensional analogue of the classical Hermite-Minkowski theorem.

A Novel Generalization of the Liouville Function $λ(n)$ and a Convergence Result for the Associated Dirichlet Series

Abstract:We introduce a novel arithmetic function $w(n)$, a generalization of the Liouville function $\lambda(n)$, as the coefficients of a Dirichlet series, and as a special case of a parametrized family of functions $w_m(n)$. We prove some useful special properties of these arithmetic functions and then focus on convergence of their Dirichlet series. In particular, we show that each function $w_m(n)$ injectively maps $\mathbb{N}$ into a dense subset of the unit circle in $\mathbb{C}$ and that $F_m(s) = \sum_n \frac{w_m(n)}{n^s}$ converges for all $s$ with $\Re(s)\in\left(\frac{1}{2},1\right)$. Finally, we show that the family of functions $w_m(n)$ converges to $\lambda(n)$ and that $F_m(s)$ converges uniformly in $m$ to $\sum_n \frac{\lambda(n)}{n^s}$, implying convergence of that series in the same region and thereby proving a particularly interesting property about a closely related function.
