Abstract:This study elucidates the pioneering application of artificial intelligence (AI), particularly deep learning, in analyzing X-ray images of plant and animal quarantine items. A comprehensive dataset was created, considering various scanning methods and item characteristics to foster the development and validation of a convolutional neural network model. Unlike traditional approaches that focus on detecting the presence of quarantine items, this model is designed to classify and identify various items under complex scenarios. For this purpose, 21 distinct classes were identified and labeled. X-ray images were acquired using 13 different scanning methods, categorized based on three primary conditions: the number of items scanned, simultaneous scanning of different item types, and arrangement of the items. The performance of the model, evaluated through its detection accuracy, showcased notable variability across items. The results were predominantly influenced by the shape, density, and consistency of the training data. Approximately 30% of the dataset images contained mixed quarantine items, highlighting the potential of the model in accurately identifying various items from the original label in mixed data scenarios, thereby substantially boosting detection accuracy. Despite the inherent challenges in applying AI to quarantine item detection, this study shows its promise in automating the classification of suspicious luggage, thereby assisting inspection officers and potentially enhancing operational efficiency in quarantine processes.
