What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper aims to investigate the acute physiological and psychological responses of women to high-intensity interval exercise with different doses of nitrate-rich beetroot juice. Specifically, the study explored the effects of three different doses of nitrate (0 mmol [placebo], 6.45 mmol [single dose], 12.9 mmol [double dose]) on heart rate (HR), blood pressure, blood glucose, lactate concentration, blood oxygen saturation, rating of perceived exertion (RPE), and emotional arousal in 13 young women during high-intensity interval cycling through a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover trial design. Key findings include: - Nitrate supplementation significantly reduced heart rate during work intervals and recovery periods, as well as the average heart rate throughout the protocol. - Nitrate supplementation also significantly reduced the rating of perceived exertion during recovery periods and the average value throughout the protocol. - There were no significant differences in heart rate or rating of perceived exertion at any time point between the different nitrate dose groups. - Changes in blood pressure, blood glucose, and lactate concentration were not significantly affected by different doses of nitrate. - Emotional arousal was not detailed in the paper. These results suggest that acute nitrate intake can significantly reduce heart rate and perceived exertion during high-intensity interval exercise, but higher doses of nitrate do not provide additional benefits. This may help practitioners implement more effective nitrate supplementation strategies during high-intensity interval exercise.
