Abstract:Diabetes mellitus (DM), 1 of the most prevalent chronic metabolic symptoms is the remaining serious concern globally. Its incidence has been increasing significantly over the past few decades. [ 1 ] As reported in 2021, about 540 million people, accounting for 10.5% of the 20- to 79-year adults worldwide had diabetes and over 90% of them were type 2 DM (T2DM). [ 1 ] Unexpectedly, the diabetes morbidity is predicted to reach 700 million by 2045. [ 1 ] Uncontrolled DM leads to the injuries in macro- and microvascular whose interrupted perfusion causes the disability of perfused organs/tissues, such as eye damage, cardiovascular diseases (CVD), kidney failure, lower limb amputations and nerve damage. [ 2 ] The complication is serious and even death if the perfusion in brain and/or heart is interrupted. [ 2 ] With the regular monitor and daily treatment required, silent progress to serious disability, and even death, DM is increasing health and social burden worldwide. Thus, reduced incidence, good management, and effective treatment to slow down disease progress are equally important.
