Abstract:A mesoporous CdS/titania heterogeneous structure has been synthesized via the self-assembly of Cd2+ ions and titania nanosheets and the subsequent sulfuration. The composited structure that CdS nanoparticles were encapsulated into titania nanosheets exhibited an enhanced visible light harvesting, as well as a large surface area and two kinds of mesoporous structures derived from the restacking of nanosheets and the pillaring of CdS nanoparticles, respectively. The results of photodegrading rhodamine B under visible light illumination suggested that this CdS/titania composite possessed a high activity compared with its layered titanate precursors and the Cd2+ intercalated form. Moreover, this material was extremely stable and displayed an excellent reusability after 5cycles.

Abstract:Photocatalytic water splitting for H-2 production becomes one of the most favorable pathways for solar energy utilization, while the charge-separation dynamics in composite photocatalysts is largely elusive. In the present work, CdS-decorated metal organic framework (MOF) composites, namely, CdS/UiO-66, have been synthesized and exhibit high H-2 production activity from photocatalytic water splitting, far surpassing the MOF and CdS counterparts, under visible light irradiation. Transient absorption (TA) spectroscopy has been adopted in this report to unveil the charge-separation dynamics in CdS/UiO-66 composites, a key process that dictates their function in photocatalysis. We show that, in addition to the preferable formation of fine CdS particles assisted by the MOF, effective electron transfer, which occurs from excited CdS to UiO-66, significantly inhibits the recombination of photogenerated charge carriers, ultimately boosting the photocatalytic activity for H-2 generation. This report on charge-separation dynamics for CdS MOF composites affords significant insights for future fabrication of advanced composite photocatalysts.

Abstract:Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are a new type of porous crystal materials that have been widely used in various fields. Owing to their adjustable porous structure, MOF photocatalysts with high catalytic activity have become a research hotspot. In this study, NH2-MIL-125/CoSx samples were investigated as a novel visible light-responsive catalyst for the removal of organic dye. The NH2-MIL-125/CoSx-20 composites showed the best photodegradation efficiency, where photodegradation of the rhodamine B reached 95.4% in 45 min. CoSx was able to effectively extend the wavelength absorption range of NH2-MIL-125 and effectively separate the photogenerated electrons and holes and that could lead to the improved photocatalytic performance of the composites. The reactive superoxide radical (·O2−) was identified as the main active species using reactive species capture experiments, and a reasonable photocatalytic mechanism was proposed. This paper is intended to guide the development of organic–inorganic hybrid materials for environmental remediation.

Abstract:Visible-light-initiated organic transformations have received much attention because of low cost, relative safety, and environmental friendliness. In this work, we report on a novel type of visible-light-driven photocatalysts, namely, porous nanocomposites of CdS-nanoparticle-decorated metal-organic frameworks (MOF), prepared by a simple solvothermal method in which porous MIL-100(Fe) served as the support and cadmium acetate (Cd(Ac)2) as the CdS precursor. When the selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde is used as the probe reaction, the results show that the combination of MIL-100(Fe) and CdS semiconductor can remarkably enhance the photocatalytic efficiency at room temperature, as compared to that of pure CdS. The enhanced photocatalytic performance can be attributed to the combined effects of enhanced light absorption, more efficient separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, and increased surface area of CdS due to the presence of MIL-100(Fe). This work demonstrates that MOF-based composite materials hold great promise for applications in the field of solar-energy conversion into chemical energy.

Abstract:Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have recently gained attention as a highly promising category of photocatalytic materials, showing great potential in the degradation of organic dyes such as Rhodamine B (RhB). Nonetheless, the mono-metal MOF materials in this application are often constrained by their limited light absorption capabilities and their propensity for recombination with carriers. The combination of different metal-based MOFs to form heterogeneous reactors could present a promising approach for the removal of dyes from water. In this work, a new CAU-17/MIL-100(Fe) Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst composed of two MOFs with the same ligands is reported to realize the efficient degradation of dyes in water. The combination of the two MOFs results in a significant enhancement of the surface open sites, optical responsivity range, and charge-separating efficiency through synergistic effects. In addition, the capture experiments conducted on the photocatalytic process have verified that ∙O2− and h+ are the primary active species. Consequently, CAU-17/MIL-100(Fe) exhibited excellent photocatalytic activity and stability. The degradation rate of the optimal CAU-17/MIL-100(Fe) photocatalyst was 34.55 times that of CAU-17 and 3.60 times that of MIL-100(Fe). Our work provides a new strategy for exploring the visible-light degradation of RhB in bimetallic MOF composites.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with large specific surface area, considerable pore volume, controllable structure, and high concentration of active metal sites have been applied widely in researches like catalysis and sensing. However, potential applications of MOFs in both photocatalysis and luminescence sensors are facing major challenges arising from their severe charge recombination, low utilization of solar energy, low quantum yield, limited charge transfer between the metal ions/clusters and the ligand. Recent studies revealed that rational introduction of carbon dots (CDs) with excellent optical properties, unique quantum confinement and high conductivity can greatly enhance the functions of MOFs. In this paper, typical synthesis methods of these CD-MOF composites as well as their potential applications in photocatalysis and sensing are reviewed with emphasis. Representative examples of these CD-MOF composites are discussed, and key features and advantages of CD-MOF composites that will facilitate future applications are highlighted.

Abstract:In this work, for the first time, we fabricated a novel covalent organic framework (COF)-based 2D-2D heterojunction composite MoS2/COF by a facile hydrothermal method. The results of photocatalytic degradation of TC and RhB under simulated solar light irradiation showed that the as-prepared composite exhibited outstanding catalytic efficiency compared with pristine COFs and MoS2. The significantly enhanced catalytic efficiency can be ascribed to the formation of 2D-2D heterojunction with a well-matched band position between COF and MoS2, which can effectively restrain the recombination of charge carriers and increase the light absorption as well as the specific surface area. Moreover, the fabricated 2D-2D layered structure can effectively increase the contact area with an intimate interface contact, which greatly facilitates the charge mobility and transfer in the interfaces. This study reveals that artful integration of organic (COFs) and inorganic materials into a single hybrid with a 2D-2D interface is an effective strategy to fabricate highly efficient photocatalysts.

Abstract:One-dimensional ZnFe2O4-decorated CdS 0D/1D composites were successfully prepared by a low-temperature hydrothermal method. The existence of ZnFe2O4 nanoparticles could greatly prevent the CdS nanowires from agglomerating. Compared with primary CdS nanowires and ZnFe2O4 nanoparticles, the photoactivity of CdS/ZnFe2O4 composites with the optimal ratio was respectively enhanced by 2.3 and 6.6 times in the process of photodegrading organic molecules. The proposed photocatalytic mechanism was verified by a radical trapping test. The improved stability and the prolonged carriers lifetime in the composites were ascribed to the existing built-in field in the interface, facilitating the fast separation of photoinduced charge carriers. It was further validated by the room-temperature photoluminescence and the electrochemical impedance spectra.

Abstract:The metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) a sub-class of well known coordination polymer are assorted multidimensional materials that could be employed as photocatalysts for aromatic dye decompostion present in the wastewater discharge. Herein, two new Cd(II) MOFs having formula [Cd7(L)4(μ2-OH)2(H2O)4(bbi)3] (1) and [Cd3(L)2(bbm)2] (2) (H3L= 3-(4-carboxyphenoxy)-5-methylbenzoic acid, bbi=1,4-di(1H-imidazol-1-yl)butane and bmp = 1,3-bis(2-methylimidazolyl)pentane) have been synthesized and characterized. The single crystal X-ray analysis reveals that the MOF 1 possesses three dimensional (3D) (3,16)-connected pillar-bilayer network with {32.4}2{38.450.534.624.74} topology and shows [Cd7(COO)14] SBUs. While, MOF 2, exhibits 2D (3,8)-connected framework with {3.42}2{34.46.56.68.73.8} topology comprising of [Cd3(COO)6] SBUs. Both MOFs have been used as photocatalysts for the photodegradation of aromatic dyes and experiments demonstrated that both 1 and 2 exhibit 95.5 % and 86.2% photodegradation of MV, respectively in time span of 100 min. Also, both MOFs offer better photodegradation of MV as compared to other model dyes viz. Rhodamine B (Rh B), methyl blue (MB) and methyl orange (MO). Additionally, the effects of catalysts amount and dye concentration on dye degradation have been explored. Further, the trapping experiments indicate that ̇OH- and ̇O2- are the active species responsible for degradation of methyl violet (MV) in presence of photocatalyst 1. Both MOFs could be recycled and can be used repetedly as photocatalysts for the degradation of MV which showcase their highly stable nature. Density of states plots and Hirshfeld surface analyses have been performed to address the plausible photocatalytic mechanistic pathways.

Abstract:CdS with band gaps of 2.4 eV is an essential semiconductor for optoelectronic and photocatalytic devices. In this study, Cd(II)-based metal–organic framework (MOF)-derived CdS photocatalysts are successfully synthesized using a facile chemical bath deposition method. CdS precursors are derived from Cd-based MOFs that H2S gas was bubbled into as S source. Four kinds of CdS nano-photocatalyst are obtained through controlling the thermal annealing process of CdS precursors. The excellent photocatalytic performance of CdS and the benefits of the porous and molecular sieving properties of MOFs are well integrated. The evolution of the morphology, microstructure, and optical properties are investigated by various characterization methods. The results indicate that the sample with an annealing temperature of 500 °C is primarily nanosheet structures with sizes ranging from 20 to 30 nm, which construct a porous network structure, Moreover, the best photodegradation activity is obtained by illuminating the catalyst in rhodamine-B dye solution for 80 min and reducing the absorption intensity to nearly zero. Finally, the pollutant degradation mechanism was analyzed in detail.

Abstract:3D CdMoO4@CdS core-shell visible-light-driven photocatalyst was successfully synthesized by in-situ method. Various analytical techniques show that CdS dots are uniformly loaded on the surface of CdMoO4 hollow microspheres constructing a 3D core-shell CdMoO4@CdS heterojunction. The photocatalytic activity of nanocomposites was studied by degrading malachite green (MG) under visible light irradiation. It was found that the composite material can effectively degrade MG under visible light irradiation. Furthermore, the enhanced photocatalytic efficiency for the composite material is due to the effective diffusion and separation of photogenerated carriers.

Abstract:High-performance photocatalysts should urgently be developed to efficiently solve serious environmental problems. Herein, we successfully synthesized a novel, visible-light activated, three-dimensional ZnCdS@MoS 2 photocatalyst using a simple, two-step hydrothermal process. Based on reaction time-dependence, the growth mechanism of "oriented attachment" of the ZnCdS@MoS 2 heterostructure is described in detail. The photodegradation of methylene blue (MB) indicated that the prepared sample has an outstanding photocatalytic activity owing to the accelerated photogenerated electron production rate, inhibited electron–hole pair recombination, improved visible light–utilization rate, and increased specific surface area. According to our experimental results, the degradation rate of MB using the ZnCdS@MoS 2 nanocomposite was as high as 99.3% after 100 min of visible-light irradiation. The photocatalyst remained stable without any obvious decrease in activity even after three cycles of use. This study provides a strong support for the design of high-performance photocatalysts and their application in optoelectronic devices. Abstract:Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides and semiconductor metal oxides have shown great potential in photocatalysis. However, their stability and efficiency need to be further improved. In this paper, porous ZnO nanorods with high specific surface area were prepared from metal-organic framework ZIF-8 by a simple hydrothermal method. A MoS2/ZnO composite was constructed by loading MoS2 onto the surface of porous ZnO nanorods. Compared with ZnO materials prepared by other methods, MoS2/ZnO prepared in this paper exhibits superior photocatalytic performance. The enhanced photocatalytic activity of the MoS2/ZnO composite can be attributed to the formation of heterojunctions and strong interaction between them, which greatly facilitate the separation of electrons and holes at the contact interface. In addition, due to the wide absorption region of the visible spectrum, MoS2 can greatly broaden the light absorption range of the material after the formation of the composite material, increase the utilization rate of visible light, and reduce the combination of electrons and holes. This study provides a new way to prepare cheap and efficient photocatalysts.

Abstract:Structural design on photocatalysts is of great importance to improve the activity for the degradation of organic contamination. Currently, the key to developing sustainable photocatalytic technology is streamlining the preparation process and effectively expanding the active sites. To solve this issue, the coupling of crystalline Fe/Mn-MOF and CdS particles through a controlled self-assembly hydrothermal routine was well favored for the uniform growth of CdS particles on the surface of Fe/Mn-MOF to achieve more reactive sites and photogenerated carrier migration. Simultaneously, modulated bandgap engineering and Z-scheme heterojunction were applied to disclose the photo-oxidative mechanism. The bimetallic Fe/Mn-MOF@CdS catalyst exhibited enhanced activity for tetracycline removal compared to the individual Fe/Mn-MOF (NBM2) at 7.47% and CdS at 78.71%, the photocatalysis efficiency could reach 90.95% over 160 min with a mineralization rate of 51.9%. This arises from the enhancement of light absorption and electron transfer facilitated by heterojunctions, as well as the increased active sites promoting photocatalytic activity. Key species involved in the photocatalysis were captured using different trapping agents. The primary reactive species •O2 – was identified to play an indispensable role in tetracycline removal. Furthermore, the 22 intermediates involved in degradation were evaluated by toxicity. The study opens a new avenue for the fabrication of bimetallic photocatalysts with a novel degradation mechanism, which would be instructive for the development of photocatalysis applications.

Abstract:The way for production of abundant valid free radicals and effective separation of photo-induced electrons and holes has been deemed as an inherent difficulty by a growing number of researchers all the time for photocatalytic technology in the field of wastewater purification and environment remediation. Herein, we successfully synthesized a novel composite S-MIL-101(Fe)@CQDs by a one pot strategy via a simple solvothermal synthesis method and annealing treatment process to remove both Cr6+ and dyes in wastewater. A series of characterization methods and photocatalytic property tests has been proved that the synthesized S-MIL-101(Fe)@CQDs exhibit more excellent photocatalytic activity than MIL-101(Fe), which is mainly due to the formation of the internal extrinsic energy level and modulation of the intrinsic electronic properties as well as electron acceptor that CQDs act as. We have proposed the necessary photocatalytic mechanism through trapping experiments of active species. We also carried out several typical pollutant degradation experiments and confirmed the wide availability of this composite. In a word, this work provides a new sight to the construction of modified MOFs for efficient removal of toxic pollutant in water.

Abstract:The formation of heterostructures is an effective way to tune the band structure and photocatalytic property. Herein, an efficient (1T/2H)-MoS2/CoFe2O4 heterojunction was prepared via a facile green hydrothermal method and performed well in the photocatalytic removal of organic dyes. By varying the molar ratio of MoS2 versus CoFe2O4, the photogenerated electron-hole separation can be enhanced in the heterojunction. The MoS2/CoFe2O4 composite with a 2:1 M ratio of MoS2 to CoFe2O4 (MC-2) shows the best photocatalytic performance, where 91.9 % of methyl blue (MB) is degraded within 60 min and its apparent rate constant is 5.94 and 25.43 times higher than those of pure MoS2 and CoFe2O4. In addition, MC-2 maintains high photocatalytic performance even in an aqueous environment similar to wastewater, where some different inorganic ions (e.g., NO3–, CO32– and SO42–) are present. Further, the remarkable ferromagnetic property of MC-2 at room temperature ensures that the composites were easy to be separated from the wastewater. Meanwhile, the as-synthesized composites exhibit good reusability. A possible mechanism for photodegradation of MB is proposed for (1T/2H)-MoS2/CoFe2O4 heterojunction by the analyses of the energy bands and the trapping experiments of active species.
