Abstract:This study deepens our theoretical and practical understanding of work—family balance, defined as the ‘accomplishment of role-related expectations that are negotiated and shared between an individual and his/her role-related partners in the work and family domains’ (Grzywacz & Carlson, 2007: 458). We develop a new measure of work—family balance and establish discriminant validity between it, work—family conflict, and work—family enrichment. Further, we examine the relationship of work—family balance with six key work and family outcomes. Results suggest that balance explains variance beyond that explained by traditional measures of conflict and enrichment for five of six outcomes tested: job satisfaction, organizational commitment, family satisfaction, family performance, and family functioning. We conclude with a discussion of the applications of our work.

Abstract:The problem and the solution. Systematic theorizing about work—family balance has not kept pace with interest, which undermines organizations' abilities to effectively monitor work—family balance and to use work—family balance strategically. The goal of this article is to develop a better conceptual understanding of work—family balance. Work—family balance is defined as accomplishment of role-related expectations that are negotiated and shared between an individual and his or her role-related partners in the work and family domains. This article elaborates on how this definition of work—family balance addresses limitations of previous conceptualizations and describes areas for human resource development research and implications for using work—family balance strategically in management practice.

Abstract:Taking a resource-based self-regulation perspective, this study examined afternoon emotional exhaustion as a mediator linking the within-person relations between morning work-family conflict and later employee displaced aggression in the work and family domains. In addition, it examined resource-related contextual factors as moderators of these relations. The theoretical model was tested using daily diary data from 125 employees. Data were collected at 4 time points during each workday for 3 consecutive weeks. Multilevel modeling analysis showed that morning family-to-work conflict was positively related to afternoon emotional exhaustion, which in turn predicted displaced aggression toward supervisors and coworkers in the afternoon and displaced aggression toward family members in the evening. In addition, morning workplace interpersonal conflict exacerbated the impact of morning work-to-family conflict on afternoon emotional exhaustion, whereas perceived managerial family support alleviated the impact of morning family-to-work conflict on afternoon emotional exhaustion. These findings indicate the importance of adopting a self-regulation perspective to understand work-family conflict at work and its consequences (i.e., displaced aggression) in both work and family domains.
Employees in Chinese Enterprises: Antecedents and Outcomes of Work-Family Balance

Abstract:A model that links antecedents and job-related outcomes associated with work interfering with family and family interfering with work in Chinese enterprises was tested. Data collected from a sample of Chinese employees was analyzed using multiple regression analysis. Findings from this study were compared to findings from a previous study that utilized a sample of employees in the United States. Conclusions from this study support: (1) a reduction in work interfering with family for employees who have control over their work schedule, (2) an increase in work interfering with family for employees who perceive negative career consequences associated with exercising options to better manage work and family balance, and (3) an increase in stress as a result both of work interfering with family and of family interfering with work. Similarities and differences between the findings of this study and the U.S. study are discussed.

Abstract:Individuals' work and family are two central domains in life. In today's modern work world, dual-income families have become the norm in many parts of the world, and societal changes have increased the number of individuals with meaningful responsibilities both at home and at work. Consequently, there is a growing expectation for parents to excel both as parents and in their careers. Parents are confronted with the challenge of deciding how to divide their time, energy, and attention between those domains. Hence, it is important to help them balance and integrate these roles. The boundary dynamics theory addresses the socially constructed boundaries between the domains of work and family, exploring how individuals uphold, navigate, and shift these boundaries (Ashforth et al., Citation 2000 ).

Abstract:In light of the dramatic social transformations occurring in the nature of family and worker demands, nearly all employees today need to make decisions on how to manage work and family roles. Drawing on role theory, we provide a summary framework for understanding individual, family, and organizational influences on the self‐management of work and family roles. Work‐family role synthesis is defined as the strategies an individual uses to manage the enactment of work and caregiving roles. It involves decision‐making choices governing boundary management and role embracement of multiple roles. We present hypotheses and a research agenda for examining antecedents and consequences of employee strategies for managing work and family roles.

Abstract:Based on the work-home resource model perspective, a dual-path mediation model is constructed, and hypothesis testing is performed through data analysis. Studies have shown that high job performance can directly promote employees' self-efficacy through the resource gain pathway, thereby directly promoting their work-family gain, and can strengthen employees' self-depletion through the resource depletion pathway, thereby indirectly exacerbating their work-family conflict. The theoretical value of the research is that it opens up a new perspective for the research of high-performance employees in the organization and verifies the scientificity of the work-family resource model. In addition, it also provides practical inspiration for the management of high-performance employees in enterprises.

Abstract:Juggling the demands of work and family is becoming increasingly difficult in today's world. As dual-earners are now a majority and men and women's roles in both the workplace and at home have changed, questions have been raised regarding how individuals and couples can balance family and work. Nevertheless, research addressing work-family conciliation strategies is limited to a conflict-driven approach and context-specific instruments are scarce. This study develops an instrument for assessing how dual-earners manage their multiple roles detaching from a conflict point of view highlighting the work-family conciliation strategies put forward by these couples. Through qualitative and quantitative procedures the Work-Family Conciliation Strategies Scales was developed and is composed by 5 factors: Couple Coping; Positive Attitude Towards Multiple Roles, Planning and Management Skills, Professional Adjustments and Institutional Support; with good adjustment [χ2/df = 1.22; CFI = .90, RMSEA = .04, SRMR = .08.] and good reliability coefficients [from .67 to .87]. The developed scale contributes to research because of its specificity to the work-family framework and its focus on the proactive nature of balancing work and family roles. The results support further use of this instrument.

Abstract:Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore coping strategies devised by executive women in family relationships to advance their career and to maintain career/family balance. Design/methodology/approach A qualitative methodology using a sample of 25 executive women explores career advancement and career/family balance strategies within work and family contexts. Findings Analysis produces multiple career advancement and career/family balance strategies, including professional support, personal support, value system, and life course strategies such as the “ordering” of career and family, negotiating spousal support, and whether to have children. Research limitations/implications Adaptive strategies facilitate engagement in career and family, even in challenging gender environments, encouraging continued research on executive women's advancement and career/family balance. The idiosyncratic nature of career/family balance calls for greater emphasis on the context and timing of career and family experiences. Practical implications The paper offers guidance to women seeking to combine executive career and family and to organizations committed to the advancement and retention of women. Originality/value The paper jointly explores career advancement and career/family balance strategies pursued by executive women in family relationships. It contributes to a growing body of research on the coping mechanisms and adaptive strategies underlying balance between career and family.

Abstract:The balance of work and family has received widespread attention from managers and researchers in recent years. Previous research claims that job demand, as a kind of pressure felt by employees, reduces employees' work motivation, increases employee fatigue and anxiety, and hinders work-family enrichment. However, different job demands (e.g., challenge demand and hindrance demand) have different effects on employees. Challenge demand, which gives individuals the opportunity to acquire new knowledge and promote personal growth, influences work-family enrichment in a complex way. However, few researches pay sufficient attention to the mechanism of the double-edged effect in the relationship between challenge demand and work-family enrichment. In addition, although scholarly research on job demand and work-family enrichment has increasingly focused on within-person fluctuations in recent years, how to examine the "dynamic" effects of challenge demand on work-family enrichment has received little attention. Therefore, based on conservation of resource theory and uncertainty management theory and from static and dynamic perspectives, we comprehensively examined the effects of challenge demand on work-family enrichment by clarifying the different attributes of challenge demand (daily level model, average level model, daily shift model, and variability model). We tested our hypothesis by conducting a diary study of 105 participations over 10 working days. Data were collected via a job demand scale, work absorption scale, relaxation scale, and work-family enrichment scale. First, we recorded control variables (gender, marital status, and spouse's work status) during the weekends. Second, researchers collected daily data (challenge demand, hindrance demand, work absorption, relaxation, and work-family enrichment) from 4:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. each workday. Ultimately, 645 valid data points at the within-person level were available for 81 participants. Using SPSS 24.0, Mplus 7.0, and R software, we conducted a multilevel path analysis to examine the theoretical model. Confirmatory factor analysis was conducted to examine the validity of the key variables (challenge demand, work absorption, relaxation, and work-family enrichment), and the results confirmed that the present study had good discriminant validity. The results of multilevel path analysis showed that the following. (1) In the static model, challenge demand had double-edged sword effects on work-family enrichment at the within-person level (daily level model); in the average level model (between-person level), the average level of challenge demand positively predicted chronic work absorption and negatively predicted chronic relaxation, and the mediating effect of chronic relaxation was stronger than that of chronic work absorption. (2) In the dynamic model, directionality of daily shifts in challenge demand negatively affected daily work absorption and daily relaxation in the daily shift model (within-person level). Only the mediating role of daily relaxation was significant; in the variability model (between-person level), the variability level of challenge demand had a negative impact on chronic work absorption and chronic relaxation, and only the mediating role of chronic relaxation was significant. The study makes critical contributions both theoretically and practically. (1) The static model indicated that, through the gained and deleted paths, the double-edged sword effect of the relationship between daily challenge demand, average level of change demand, and work- family enrichment was significant. (2) Through the dynamic model, this study explored the negative effect of challenge demand fluctuations on work- family enrichment in two forms, namely, daily shift directionality and the variability of challenge demand. Practically, this study suggests that managers should fully recognize the double- edged sword effect of challenge demand.

Abstract:Based on the work-home resources model and crossover theory, we examined how dual-career couples' work challenge stressors impact each other's ego depletion by collecting time-lagged and multi-source data on work challenge stressors, work-to-family conflict, distress, and ego depletion from both members of dual-career couples. We collected multi-wave data from 105 matched dual-career couples. Based on the work-home resources model and crossover theory, we hypothesized that the stress mindsets of both partners moderate the indirect relationships of work challenge stressors, work-to-family conflict, distress, and spousal ego depletion. APIM results support our hypotheses and have both research and practical implications.

Abstract:This study examined the relations between three aspects of work culture (flexibility of working hours, flexibility of the work itself, and supportive supervision) and work/family balance in the context of selected characteristics that can put individuals at risk for work/family imbalance (dual career partnerships, number of children, and hours worked per week). The data came from 179 individuals in a wide variety of family situations and workplaces. Results of the study indicated that the flexibility of the work itself was associated with increased work satisfaction and increased family well-being. Flexibility of work times was unassociated with any work or personal outcome. Supportive supervision was associated only with increased employee citizenship. An examination of interactive effects between aspects of culture and individuals' characteristics showed that work/family balance was lower when employees had a large number of children and supportive supervision.

Abstract:This article reviews extant work-life literature to identify person-centered variables reflective of the agentic approach in crafting a balance between work and personal life. 49 articles are selected following the systematic literature review paradigm. Qualitative analysis of the studies elicited individual strategies, competencies, resources, and other attributes employed in managing work and life. These are clustered into 9 higher-order themes, each discussed in detail. Each of these trainable attributes opens avenues for further theoretical development and empirical investigation by scholars. We call for operationalization of the framework for effective implementation at work and implore exploring ramifications of civility on work-life outcomes. This individual-focused branch of work-life interface research holds immense potential for theoretical development and managerial implications in devising employee-centered initiatives. We explicitly invite a scholarly debate for moving beyond 'balance' and embracing 'fulfillment' as a concept and other propositions to develop theoretical research on.

Abstract:The extent to which individuals manage multiple role domains has yet to be fully understood. We advance past research by examining the effect of interrole conflict among three very common and critically important life roles-work, family, and school-on three corresponding types of satisfaction. Further, we examine individual-based techniques that can empower people to manage multiple roles. In doing so, we integrate the disengagement strategies from the work recovery and coping literatures. These strategies focus on taking your mind off the problems at hand and include cognitive disengagement (psychological detachment, cognitive avoidance coping), as well as cognitive distortion (escape avoidance coping). We examine these strategies in a two-wave study of 178 individuals faced with the challenge of managing work, family, and school responsibilities. Findings demonstrated a joint offsetting effect of psychological detachment and cognitive avoidance coping on the relationship between work conflict and work satisfaction. Findings also indicated an exacerbating effect of escape avoidance coping on the relationship between work conflict and work satisfaction, school conflict and school satisfaction, and between family conflict and family satisfaction. Implications for theory and practice are discussed.

Abstract:We examined the experience of multiple jobholders with families in reference to work-family conflict and psychological stress. Survey data were collected from American employees who held one or more jobs (<i>N</i> = 410) to test a model that indicated a path from jobs held to stress through work-family conflict and performance quality as stressors, with the latter stressor conditional on the importance that employees place on performance quality. Our results confirmed that more jobs held were associated with more work-to-family conflict, which in turn was associated with low-rated performance quality, which in turn was associated with more psychological stress. Also confirmed was that the performance quality-stress relationship was conditional on high importance placed on performance quality. Suggestions for future research and stress-reduction intervention are discussed.

Abstract:Voydanoffs (1987) three constructs for the sequencing of work and family stages are integrated with family development theory to produce three hypotheses in regard to work-family career stages and its relationship to satisfaction with the balance between work and family. Canadian findings indicate that the effects for work-family stages are moderated by gender. Mothers who work over twenty hours a week are less satisfied with the balance between work and family than fathers and mothers who work less than twenty hours or are at home full time. Part time dual earner families show relatively high satisfaction with work-family balance for both genders. These finding are discussed in the contexts of family development theory and current social change.

Abstract:The focus of this paper is the development and testing of a model of the relationships between work conflict, family conflict, work-family conflict, quality of work life, quality of family life, and life satisfaction. The model was based on the theoretical work of Kopelman, Greenhaus, and Connolly (1983, Organizational Behavior and Human Performance, 32, 198–215) and was tested on responses from 220 career-oriented individuals with children and a career-oriented spouse. Fifteen of 17 hypothesized relationships were significant and the variance explained in work-family conflict exceeded 49%. The results indicated that work conflict was the most important predictor of family conflict lending support to Kanter's contention that the work and family domains cannot be considered as separate, independent entities. Of 6 relationships tested, work conflict was also the most important predictor of work-family conflict. It is suggested that this is due to the fact that people have less control over their work lives than their family lives and implies that work operates as a dominant constraint over an individual. Work-family conflict was shown to have a significant negative influence on an individual's quality of work life and quality of family life, which, in turn, were highly related to life satisfaction.

Abstract:The work-family interface is a compelling topic that calls into question labor market dynamics and work processes, together with important social and family composition changes. The present study aimed at examining the antecedents of Work-Family Balance (WFB) in Italy consistent with Greenhaus and Allen’s (2011) conceptual model in which the characteristics of work and family roles have an indirect impact on work-family balance through Work-Family Conflict (WFC) and Work-Family Enrichment (WFE), and where job and family satisfaction are considered as predictors of WFB. A total of 568 workers participated in a time-lagged correlational study, filling a questionnaire. The theoretical model was tested by assessing the mediating role of job and family satisfaction as well as related antecedents, conflict, and enrichment between the family and work contexts, through Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). The results partially confirmed the theoretical model: work-to-family enrichment and work-to-family conflict predicted family satisfaction, which also mediated their association with WFB. The results in the family-to-work direction did not support the initial research hypotheses. The hypotheses about associations between demands and resources, conflict and enrichment in both directions, and of the moderating role of core self-evaluations were partially confirmed. The results highlighted that organizations need to carry out periodic assessments of WFC and WFE, in order to provide benefits and resources, to reduce conflict, and increase enrichment, through proper interventions (training activities, professional development, mentoring, and forms of flexibility).
