Abstract:An innovative nonlinear control approach, comprising a fusion of fuzzy observer technique with sliding mode control (denoted SMFC), is presented in this paper as the proposed control strategy for cascaded multilevel inverter systems. This proposed technique has been developed to address the limitations of the traditional sliding mode control method and enables control of the multilevel inverter without relying on conventional carrier-based modulation techniques. To eliminate steady-state error and reduce oscillations caused by rapid and significant changes in current and voltage on the load, the control law is adjusted using a constant c2$${{\mathrm{c}}}_{2}$$ and combined with a low-pass filter. Moreover, the presence of the chattering phenomenon in the vicinity of the sliding-mode surface, caused by the discontinuous sgn(s) function, leads to a deterioration in the robustness of the inverter system. Therefore, fuzzy logic control is employed to observe the discontinuous sgn(s) function. The stability of the suggested SMFC approach is substantiated through the application of the Lyapunov stability criterion. Furthermore, the superiority of the SMFC approach is verified through experiments conducted on the cascaded three-level inverter, and the comparison is made with two other conventional methods: in-phase disposition modulation (PD) and phase opposition disposition modulation (POD). The test results indicate that the proposed SMFC method achieves fast and precise response, significantly reduces common-mode voltage, and improves the output quality of the cascaded three-level inverter, surpassing traditional carrier-based modulation methods. The SMFC method not only improves the performance but also ensures robust control of the inverter, thereby allowing for the maximum exploitation of the effectiveness of the cascaded multilevel inverters.
