Abstract:Refractive error has through its main determinant, the axial length, a major influence on the anatomy of the anterior and posterior segment of the eye. The refractive error/axial length is associated with the morphology of the anterior chamber angle and thus with the differentiation between open angle glaucoma and angle closure glaucoma. It is correlated with the anatomy and ophthalmoscopic appearance of the optic nerve head, both influencing the susceptibility for, and the detectability of, glaucomatous optic neuropathy. Susceptibility for, and detectability of a disease are major parameters to be used to screen for the detection of the disease. Here, we describe refractive error/axial length-associated features of the optic nerve head and other parameters, which have potential importance for glaucoma susceptibility and can present pitfalls for the detection of glaucomatous optic neuropathy. We finally conclude which of the parameters may be of importance for glaucoma screening surveys.
