Abstract:Enantiomer sorting greatly promotes the advancement of chemistry, bioscience, and medicine while also facing significant challenges. Recently, all-optical solutions have attracted considerable interest due to their non-invasiveness. While, it should be noted that the achiral optical force is always much larger than the chiral gradient force that plays a key role in all-optical enantiomer sorting, hindering the separation of enantiomers. Previously proposed methods to boost the chiral gradient forces by plasmonic and photonic nanostructures are often accompanied by the enhancement of achiral optical forces. The sorted chiral particles are also difficult to be transferred from the complex nanostructures. Here, we propose an approach for separating enantiomers using uniform light field formed by two waves, which is capable of sorting deep sub-wavelength chiral particles. In our method, the chiral particles can be sorted within a simple planar structure while the achiral gradient force is equal to zero. Our research reveals a promising perspective on large-scale sorting for enantiomers.

Abstract:Understanding and controlling chirality are important because of its ubiquity in nature. In recent years, we have witnessed the rapid development of chiral metamaterials with exceptional light-manipulating capabilities. Here, we present a design for photonic heterostructures in chiral photonics, demonstrating that photonic heterostructures stacked from achiral metasurfaces can create distinctive chiroptical functionalities. Analyses based on the symmetry group and microscopic dipolar interactions at two-dimensional boundaries reveal the implicit mechanism of the interlayer coupling in photonic heterostructures. By flip stacking, the photonic heterostructure gives rise to an asymmetric chiral phase from achiral composites, and hence, provides the full spin-flipped scattering of incident photons. Incident electromagnetic waves with arbitrary polarization orientations can be efficiently separated into two orthogonal circularly polarized ones with orthogonal trajectories, leading to an ideal circular beam splitter. This effect is experimentally demonstrated at microwave frequencies via the measurement of a scattering matrix. Due to its generality and scalability, we expect the methodology of photonic heterostructure might open up an alternative pathway for exploring intriguing and advanced metamaterials over a broad wavelength range.
A Highly Tunable Sub-Wavelength Chiral Structure For Circular Polarizer

Abstract:Chiral structures are composed of periodically arranged asymmetric particles. The asymmetry of chiral particles results in extraordinary properties like negative refraction index, giant optical activity and circular dichroism. Consequently, they have applications in super lens and various polarization controllers. There are two types of chiral structures, namely planar and 3D structures. The planar ones usually have three-or fourfold rotational symmetry, which limits the polarization tuning capability. On the other hand, the 3D prototypes are difficult to fabricate and measure. Here, we propose a highly tunable sub-wavelength 3D chiral structure. It can be conveniently manufactured on the single-layer double-side printed circuit board. Based on the proposed idea, a sample converting a linearly polarized wave to a circularly polarized one is demonstrated both theoretically and experimentally. The conversion efficiency is measured to be 60%.

Abstract:Due to the mirror symmetry breaking, chiral structures show fantastic electromagnetic (EM) properties involving negative refraction, giant optical activity, circular dichroism and asymmetric transmission. Aligned electric and magnetic dipoles excited in chiral structures contribute to the extraordinary properties. However, the chiral structures that exhibit n-fold rotational symmetry show a limited tunability of the chirality. In this paper, we propose a compact, light, and highly tunable anisotropic chiral structure to overcome this limitation and realize a linear-to-circular polarization conversion. The anisotropy is due to simultaneous excitations of two different pairs of aligned electric and magnetic dipoles. The 3-D omega-shaped structure, etched on two sides of one printed circuit board (PCB) with connecting metallic vias, achieves 60% of linear-to- circular conversion (transmission) efficiency at the operating frequency of 9.2 GHz. The desired 90 degrees phase shift between the two orthogonal linear polarizations is not only from the chirality but also from the anisotropic chiral response slightly off the resonance. The work enables elegant and practical polarization control of EM waves.
Selective Transport of Chiral Particles by Optical Pulling Forces

Abstract:We propose a simple approach for chirality sorting based on the optical pulling forces. The scenario is to employ three simple plane waves with the same circular polarization. The three wave vectors have the same longitudinal positive z component while their corresponding transverse projections in the x-o-y plane form a regular triangle. In such an optical lattice, particles with certain chirality will be drawn by the transverse optical force to the periodic intensity maxima, where they are stably trapped and exerted by an optical pulling force along the negative z direction. On the contrary, particles with the opposite chirality are de-trapped transversely away from the intensity maxima and then dispersed in regions where they subject to a positive (pushing) force along the z direction. The phenomena therefore give rise to an alternative all-optical method for selective transport of chiral particles with a wide range of chirality parameters.
Tailoring the Gradient and Scattering Forces for Longitudinal Sorting of Generic-Size Chiral Particles.

Abstract:Based on the concepts of conservative and non-conservative optical forces (COF and NCOF), we analyze the physical mechanism of longitudinal chirality sorting along the direction of light propagation in some simple optical fields. It is demonstrated, both numerically and analytically for particle of arbitrary size, that the sorting relies solely on the NCOF, which switches its direction when particle chirality is reversed. For particles larger than half of the optical wavelength λ, the NCOF far surpasses its counterpart COF, enabling the longitudinal chirality sorting. When the particle is much smaller than λ, however, the COF outweighs the NCOF, destroying the sorting mechanism. A scenario is thus proposed that totally eliminates the COF while leaving the sorting NCOF unchanged, extending the applicability of longitudinal chirality sorting to small particles.
Chirality Sorting Using Two-Wave-interference–induced Lateral Optical Force

Abstract:We demonstrate that a lateral optical force (LOF) can be induced on chiral nanoparticles immersed in the two interfering plane waves. The LOF can push the chiral nanoparticle sideways, in the direction relying on the helicity of the particle as well as the phase difference between two waves. Analytical theory reveals that the LOF comes mostly from the direct coupling of the optical vorticity with the particle chirality. In particular, the LOF has a magnitude comparable to the gradient force and radiation pressure when the particle chirality is sufficiently large. The LOF may serve for chirality sorting due to its unusual properties and also provide an opportunity for passive chiral spectroscopy.

Abstract:Separating distinct nanoparticles from a cluster by applying simple nonstructured light can be a novel approach for future industrial development. Understanding the type of distinct particles from a three-particle cluster (i.e., chiral, plasmonic, and dielectric) based on different near-field optical forces has not been reported so far. In most of the set ups, optical sorting is reported for radius-based sorting of Mie-ranged single object. Here, three different optical setups are proposed, illuminated by a linearly polarized plane wave (propagating along θ=45∘ angle) in a particle cluster constructed with chiral, plasmonic, and dielectric nanoparticles in an air medium (case 1), half immersed in water (case 2), and fully immersed in water (case 3). All of those have supported the near-field optical sorting from the cluster of three Rayleigh sized particles. It is observed that the dielectric object experiences counter-intuitive optical pulling force mainly due to the effect of induced magnetic-type resonance created on nearby plasmonic object. In contrast, plasmonic objects experience optical pushing force due to the transferred momentum of photon and chiral objects experience lateral force mainly due to the induced magnetic dipole on the chiral object.

Abstract:The chiral state of light plays a vital role in light-matter interactions and the consequent revolution of nanophotonic devices and advanced modern chiroptics. As the light-matter interaction goes into the nano- and quantum world, numerous chiroptical technologies and quantum devices require precise knowledge of chiral electromagnetic modes and chiral radiative local density of states (LDOS) distributions in detail, which directly determine the chiral light-matter interaction for applications such as chiral light detection and emission. With classical optical techniques failing to directly measure the chiral radiative LDOS, deep-subwavelength imaging and control of circular polarization (CP) light associated phenomena are introduced into the agenda. Here, we simultaneously reveal the hidden chiral electromagnetic mode and acquire its chiral radiative LDOS distribution of a single symmetric nanostructure at the deep-subwavelength scale by using CP-resolved cathodoluminescence (CL) microscopy. The chirality of the symmetric nanostructure under normally incident light excitation, resulting from the interference between the symmetric and antisymmetric modes of the V-shaped nanoantenna, is hidden in the near field with a giant chiral distribution (∼99%) at the arm-ends, which enables the circularly polarized CL emission from the radiative LDOS hot-spot and the following active helicity control at the deep-subwavelength scale. The proposed V-shaped nanostructure as a functional unit is further applied to the helicity-dependent binary encoding and the two-dimensional display applications. The proposed physical principle and experimental configuration can promote the future chiral characterization and manipulation at the deep-subwavelength scale and provide direct guidelines for the optimization of chiral light-matter interactions for future quantum studies.
Unidirectional chiral scattering from single enantiomeric plasmonic nanoparticles

Abstract:Controlling scattering and routing of chiral light at the nanoscale is important for optical information processing and imaging, quantum technologies as well as optical manipulation. Here, we introduce a concept of rotating chiral dipoles in order to achieve unidirectional chiral scattering. Implementing this concept by engineering multipole excitations in plasmonic helicoidal nanoparticles, we experimentally demonstrate enantio-sensitive and highly-directional forward scattering of circularly polarised light. The intensity of this highly-directional scattering is defined by the mutual relation between the handedness of the incident light and the chirality of the structure. The concept of rotating chiral dipoles opens up numerous possibilities for engineering of scattering from chiral nanostructures and optical nano-antennas for the design and application of chiral light-matter interaction.

Selectively Transporting Small Chiral Particles with Circularly Polarized Airy Beams.

Abstract:Based on the full wave simulation, we demonstrate that a circularly polarized vector Airy beam can selectively transport small chiral particles along a curved trajectory via the chirality-tailored optical forces. The transverse optical forces can draw the chiral particles with different particle chirality towards or away from the intensity maxima of the beam, leading to the selective trapping in the transverse plane. The transversely trapped chiral particles are then accelerated along a curved trajectory of the Airy beam by the chirality-tailored longitudinal scattering force, rendering an alternative way to sort and/or transport chiral particles with specified helicity. Finally, the underlying physics of the chirality induced transverse trap and de-trap phenomena are examined by the analytical theory within the dipole approximation.

Abstract:The optical manipulation of chiral nanoparticles in a vector Airy beam with linear polarization is theoretically investigated, and to calculate the optical forces acting on a spherical chiral particle of an arbitrary size beyond the paraxial approximation, a rigorous numerical method based on the generalized Lorenz-Mie theory and Maxwell stress tensor method is presented. It is found that the chiral nanoparticle not only can be stably trapped within the main lobe due to the transverse optical gradient force but also can be transported faster than a conventional particle without chirality along curved trajectories because of the longitudinal scattering optical force. In addition, the particle chirality significantly enhances the longitudinal optical force while slightly affecting the transverse optical force. Our results may provide an additional handle for the optical manipulation of chiral nanoparticles.
Sorting of chiral active particles by a spiral shaped obstacle

Abstract:Sorting of chiral particles by obstacles often relies on the chiral symmetry breaking of the patterns. We proposed a method for the chiral separation of chiral active particles in a two-dimensional square box where exists a spiral shaped obstacle. With the chirality of circular motion coupling to chiral features in the spiral environment, the mixed chiral particles can be separated and selectively trapped by the spiral shaped obstacle. We found that the mixed particles can be completely separated for the optimal angular speed and self-propulsion speed of active particles. Our results can be exploited to capture or sort chiral active particles with specific parameters.

Abstract:In order to determine whether a particle is plasmonic, dielectric, or chiral, different complex processes and chemicals are applied in lab setups and pharmaceutical industries. Sorting or categorizing a particle based on distinct optical forces can be a novel technique. When a beam of light interacts with a particle, it usually pushes the particle in the direction of the light's propagation. Counterintuitively, it can also pull the particle toward the light beam or move it toward a lateral direction. As far as we know, to date, no comprehensive report exists regarding a single optical arrangement capable of inducing entirely distinct behaviors of force for three disparate types of independently placed single Rayleigh particle. This study introduces an all-optical technique aimed at effectively sorting nanoscale Rayleigh-sized objects employing a plasmonic substrate, when each distinct type of single particle is placed over the substrate independently. Unfortunately, this proposed technique does not work for the cluster or mixture of distinct particles. In our proposed configuration, a simple linearly polarized plane wave is incident onto the plasmonic substrate, thereby engendering completely different responses from three different types of nanoparticles: Gold (plasmonic), SiO2 (dielectric), and Chiral particles. We conducted individual tests for our setup using linearly polarized plane waves at angles of 30-degree, 45-degree, and 60-degree individually. Consistent results were obtained across all angles. In each of the three distinct setups involving the aforementioned particle, a dielectric Rayleigh particle experiences an optical pulling force, a plasmonic Rayleigh particle experiences an optical pushing force, and a chiral Rayleigh particle encounters an optical lateral force. These distinctive force behaviors manifest as a result of the intricate interplay between the material properties of the nanoparticles and the characteristics of the plane-polarized beam, encompassing aspects such as plasmonic response, chirality, and refractive index. Moreover, this technique presents an environmentally sustainable and economically viable alternative to the utilization of expensive and potentially hazardous chemicals in nanoparticle sorting processes within industrial domains.

Abstract:Abstract Enriching the library of chiral plasmonic nanoparticles that can be chemically mass-produced will greatly facilitate the applications of chiral plasmonics in areas ranging from constructing optical metamaterials to sensing chiral molecules and activating immune cells. Here we report on a halide-assisted differential growth strategy that can direct the anisotropic growth of chiral Au nanoparticles with tunable sizes and diverse morphologies. Anisotropic Au nanodisks are employed as seeds to yield triskelion-shaped chiral nanoparticles with threefold rotational symmetry and high dissymmetry factors. The averaged scattering g -factors of the l - and d -nanotriskelions are as large as 0.57 and − 0.49 at 650 nm, respectively. The Au nanotriskelions have been applied in chiral optical switching devices and chiral nanoemitters. We also demonstrate that the manipulation of the directional growth rate enables the generation of a variety of chiral morphologies in the presence of homochiral ligands.

Unraveling the Chirality Transfer from Circularly Polarized Light to Single Plasmonic Nanoparticles

Abstract:Due to their broken symmetry, chiral plasmonic nanostructures have unique optical properties and multiple applications. However, there is still a lack of comprehension about how chirality transfer between circularly polarized light (CPL) and these structures occurs. Here, we thoroughly investigate the plasmon-assisted growth of chiral nanoparticles from achiral Au nanocubes (AuNCs) via CPL without the involvement of any chiral molecule stimulators. We identify the structural chirality of our synthesized chiral plasmonic nanostructures by using circular differential scattering (CDS) spectroscopy correlated with scanning electron microscopy imaging at both the single-particle and ensemble levels. Theoretical simulations, including hot-electron surface maps, reveal that the plasmon-induced chirality transfer is mediated by the asymmetric distribution of hot electrons on achiral AuNCs under CPL excitation. Furthermore, we shed light on how this plasmon-induced chirality transfer can also be utilized for chiral growth in bimetallic systems, such as Ag or Pd on AuNCs. Results presented here reveal fundamental aspects of chiral light-matter interaction, influencing the future design and optimization of chiral sensors and chiral catalysis, among others.

Abstract:Abstract Circular dichroism spectroscopy is one of the most important tools in nanoscopic chiroptics. However, there is lack of simple, fast and reliable method for measuring the circular dichroism responses of single nanostructures. To tackle this issue, we report a polarization-dispersive imaging spectrometer which is capable of measuring the scattering circular dichroism response of a single chiral nanostructure with a single shot. Using this technique, we studied the scattering circular dichroism spectra of a model system, the vertically coupled plasmonic nanorod pair. Both experimental and theoretical results indicate that the polarization-dispersive spectrometer measures the imaginary part of nonlocal susceptibility of the structure. We further applied the technique to 3-dimensional Au nanorod structures assembled on DNA origami templates together with correlated scanning electron microscopic measurements. Rich chiroptical phenomena were unveiled at the single nanostructure level.
Multilevel Chirality Transfer from Amino Acid Derivatives to Circularly Polarized Luminescence-Active Nanoparticles in Aqueous Medium

Abstract:Chirality at different levels is widely observed in nature, but the clue to connect it all together, and the way chirality transfers among different levels are still obscure. Herein, a l-/d-lysine-based self-assembly system was constructed, in which two-step chirality transfer among three different levels was observed in aqueous solution. The chirality originated from the point chirality of amino acid derivatives l-/d-PyLys hydrochloride, and was transferred to the planar conformational chirality of water-soluble pillar[5]arene pR-/pS-WP5. Then, with the aid of pR-/pS-WP5, nanoparticles were formed that exhibited L-/R-handed circularly polarized luminescence with a dissymmetry factor of up to +/- 0.001, arising from pyrene chiral excimers. This multilevel chirality transfer not only provides a perspective to trace potential clues, and to pursue certain ways by which the chirality transfers, but also offers a strategy to create controllable CPL emission in aqueous media.
Ultrathin Suspended Chiral Metasurfaces for Enantio‐discrimination

Abstract:Chiral metasurfaces can exhibit a strong circular dichroism, but it is limited by the complicated fabrication procedure and alignment errors. Here, we demonstrate a new type of self-aligned suspended chiral bilayer metasurface with only one-step electron beam lithography exposure. A significant optical chirality of 221°/μm can be realized using suspended metasurfaces with a thickness of 100 nm. Furthermore, we experimentally demonstrate that such a structure is capable of label-free discrimination of the chiral molecules at zeptomole level, exhibiting a much higher sensitivity (orders of magnitude) compared to the conventional circular dichroism spectroscopy. The fundamental principles for chiral sensing using molecules‒metasurfaces interactions have been explored. Benefiting from the giant chiroptical response, our proposed meta-device may offer promising applications for ultrathin circular polarizers, chiral molecular detectors, and asymmetry information processing. Abstract:The emergence of optical chirality in the light emitted from plasmonic nanostructures is commonly associated with their geometrical chirality. Although it has been demonstrated that even achiral structures can exhibit chiral near-fields, the existence of chiroptical far-field responses of such structures is widely neglected. In this paper, we present a detailed analysis of the polarization state in a single planar achiral plasmonic nanostructure that sustains more than one prominent plasmon mode. In consideration of the relative phase, the superposition of the fields associated with these modes determines the polarization state of the emitted light in the far-field. Supported by simulations of the surface charge distribution of the particle, we show that the polarization state of the emitted light is already determined in the near-field. The chiroptical far-field responses are analyzed by polarized single-particle dark-field scattering spectroscopy. We introduce an analytical model that enables us to obtain the polarization information from the spectra of structures with dipolar resonances taken under unpolarized illumination. The same principle is confirmed in polarimetric spectroscopy measurements on rhomboids with systematically varied angles, therefore, introducing increasing values of geometrical chirality to the structures. The agreement between the calculation and measurement demonstrates the general validity of our model for both chiral and achiral structures.
